The crystal structures of Ca1.5Mn0.5V2O7 (I) and Ca1.5Cd0.5V2O7 (II) synthesized by the citrate method and by a conventional solid-state reaction, respectively, were determined using X-ray powder diffraction data. It was found that the compound I has a monoclinic crystal structure a = 4.88563(9) Å, b = 11.21279(22) Å, c = 5.69643(11 Å), β = 96.376(7)°, V = 310.132(10) Å3 (space group P21/c), Z = 2). Compound I has a narrow homogeneity region Ca1.5±0.1Mn0.5±0.1V2O7. The vanadate Ca1.5Cd0.5V2O7 crystallizes in the triclinic system with the parameters a = 6.66139(6) Å, b = 6.93019(7) Å, c = 7.02211(6) Å, α = 85.4404(9)°, β = 63.7505(7)°, γ = 82.5515(10)° и V = 288.201(5) Å3 (space group P$\bar 1$, Z = 2). It is one of the formulations of the primary solid solution, formed as a result of the substitution of part of the calcium cations for cadmium cations in Ca2V2O7.

The ICDD has developed a microanalysis tool to help scientists identify minerals from their elemental analyses, most typically micro-XRF or a microprobe analysis. Many minerals have characteristic elemental profiles that can often distinguish the mineral from others by their composition differences. In Release 2016 ICDD® PDF-4 databases 20 670 unique compositions have been identified out of 45 497 mineral and mineral-related entries. The application utilizes several common features of PDF® databases to enhance correct identification, most notably those formulas are expressed in weight and atomic percent, data sets are classified by mineral nomenclature and structural classifications, and most minerals have associated atomic and molecular structures. These crystal structures are very useful in determining compositional variants and solid solutions. The ICDD has developed algorithms that are analogous to the search/match processes used for powder diffraction identification. Data can be input as either the element or common oxide. To test the algorithm and graphics interfaces we compared results from the microanalysis module to published data from the Smithsonian Microbeam reference mineral collection. The software correctly identified 24/28 minerals by the highest merit score in the algorithm. In two cases, an isoelemental mineral was identified and in two other cases, the specimens had more elements than the reference standards hindering positive phase identification.

Commercially available trisodium hexachlororhodate (Na3RhCl6) was dehydrated and characterized by laboratory X-ray powder diffraction. The crystal structure is isostructural to the Na3CrCl6 structure type with space group P$\bar 31$c. Unit-cell parameters are a = 6.8116(1) Å, c = 11.9196(2) Å, V = 478.95(2) Å3, and Z = 2.

The crystal structure of vardenafil hydrochloride trihydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Vardenafil hydrochloride trihydrate crystallizes in space group C2/c (#15) with a = 34.78347(16), b = 11.56752(4), c = 14.69308(5) Å, β = 93.3410(4), V = 5901.839(30) Å3, and Z = 8. The fused ring system and the phenyl ring are nearly co-planar; the interplanar angle between them is 6.0°. Two intramolecular hydrogen bonds help determine this conformation. These planes stack along the c-axis. The side chains of these ring systems have a large Uiso and are neighbors in the stacks. Along the a-axis, these stacks are separated by hydrophilic layers of chloride, water molecules, and the positively charged nitrogen atoms of the vardenafil cation. Hydrogen bonds are prominent in the crystal structure. The protonated nitrogen atom forms a strong hydrogen bond to the chloride anion. The water molecules form a hexagon, making hydrogen bonds with themselves, as well as the C1 and a ring nitrogen atom. These discrete hydrogen bonds form a cluster, and there is no extended hydrogen bond network. There are many C–H⋯Cl, C–H⋯O, and C–H⋯N hydrogen bonds, which (although individually weak) contribute significantly to the crystal energy. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data, unit-cell parameters and space group for 7-ethyl-14-nitro-camptothecin, C22H19N3O6, are reported [a = 10.987(5) Å, b = 10.941 (9) Å, c = 8.438 (2) Å, α = 71.321(6)°, β = 96.145(0)°, γ = 95.139(3)°, unit-cell volume V = 953.87 Å3, Z = 2, ρcal = 1.467 g cm−3, and space group P-1]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P-1 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The Schiff base N1,N2-di(2-hydroxy)benzylidenebenzene-1,2-di-imine was prepared from salicylaldehyde and 1,2-diaminobenzene by reflux in ethanol for 6 h obtaining an orange crystalline solid. The Schiff base solid was separated by filtration and washed with ethanol and ethylic ether, and finally, it was dried in a vacuum system for 2 h. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for this new compound showed that the crystalline compound belongs to the monoclinic system and space group P21/c (No. 14) with refined unit-cell parameters a = 5.9672 (7) Å, b = 16.561 (1) Å, c = 16.337 (2) Å, β = 91.41° (1). The volume of the unit cell is V = 1614.1 (2) Å3.

Calibration of the prototype Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) selected for Mars 2020 has commenced with an empirical derivation of the X-ray optic transmission profile. Through a straightforward method of dividing a measured “blank” spectrum over one calculated assuming no optic influence, a rudimentary profile was formed. A simple boxcar-smoothing algorithm was implemented to approximate the complete profile that was incorporated into PIQUANT. Use of this form of smoothing differs from the more conventional approach of using a parameter-based function to complete the profile. Comparison of element-specific correction factors, taken from a measurement of NIST SRM 610, was used to assess the accuracy of the new profile. Improvement in the low- to mid-energy portion of the data was apparent though the high-energy region diverged from unity, and thus, requires further refinement.

The crystal structure of pemetrexed disodium heptahydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Pemetrexed disodium heptahydrate crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 11.732 697(27), b = 5.244 195(14), c = 21.689 00(6) Å, β = 92.663 90(20)°, V = 1333.051(6) Å3, and Z = 2. Each of the two ionized carboxylate groups acts as a unidentate ligand to a Na cation. The remaining five positions of the octahedral coordination spheres are occupied by water molecules. The Na octahedra share an edge to form pairs. These pairs share corners to form chains along the b-axis. All of the water molecule hydrogen atoms act as hydrogen bond donors. In addition the hydrogen atoms associated with the nitrogen atoms and amino groups of the pemetrexed anion were also observed to act as hydrogen bond donors. The powder pattern has been submitted to the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

Estradiol valerate (brand name: Delestrogen) is used as a hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms and for treating advanced prostate cancer. Commercial estradiol 17β valerate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 with a = 7.36787(3), b = 19.84900(6), c = 13.99395(10) Å, β = 90.6845(5)°, V = 2046.398(18) Å3, and Z = 4.

A new ternary compound Al5NdNi2 was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of aluminum, neodymium, and nickel in an arc furnace and annealing in vacuum. The crystal structure of Al5NdNi2 was studied by X-ray powder diffraction technique and Rietveld analysis. All diffraction lines of Al5NdNi2 were indexed, and the lattice parameters were refined with an orthorhombic structure type of space group Immm (No.71) using Rietveld analysis program DBWS-9807. The lattice parameters are presented, a = 7.0508(1) Å, b = 9.5690(1) Å, c = 3.9792(1) Å, V = 268.47 Å3, Z = 2, ρ = 4.91 g cm−3, and RIR = 1.23.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters and space group for azilsartan, C25H20N4O5, are reported [a = 9.641(3) Å, b = 11.301(9) Å, c = 20.010(8) Å, α = 90°, β = 90.351(5)°, γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 2196.735(4) Å3, Z = 4, ρcal = 1.379 g·cm−3, and space group P21/c]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21/c space group. No detectable impurities were observed.
