Object-based stochastic modelling techniques are routinely employed to generate multiple realisations of the spatial distribution of sediment properties in settings where data density is insufficient to construct a unique deterministic facies architecture model. Challenge is to limit the wide range of possible outcomes of the stochastic model. Ideally, this is done by direct validation with the ‘real-world’ sediment distribution. In a reservoir setting this is impossible because of the limited data density in the wide-spaced wells. In this paper this uncertainty is overcome by using size, shape and facies distributions of tidal channel and tidal flat sand bodies in a highly data-constrained lithofacies architecture model as input for the object-based stochastic model. The lithofacies architecture model was constructed from a densely perforated (Cone Penetration Tests and cored boreholes) tidal estuarine succession of the Holocene Holland Tidal Basin in the Netherlands. The sensitivity of the stochastic model to the input parameters was analysed with the use of varying tidal channel width and thickness values and calculating the connected sand volume per well for the different scenarios. The results indicated that for a small well drainage radius the difference in drainable volumes between the narrowest and the widest channel scenarios is large, and that for a large well drainage radius the tidal channel width hardly influenced the drainable volume. The sensitivity analysis highlighted the importance of sand-dominated tidal flats in improving lateral connectivity.

Not long after discovery of the Groningen field, gas-production-induced compaction and consequent land subsidence was recognised to be a potential threat to groundwater management in the province of Groningen, in addition to the fact that parts of the province lie below sea level. More recently, NAM's seismological model also pointed to a correlation between reservoir compaction and the observed induced seismicity above the field. In addition to the already existing requirement for accurate subsidence predictions, this demanded a more accurate description of the expected spatial and temporal development of compaction.

Since the start of production in 1963, multiple levelling campaigns have gathered a unique set of deformation measurements used to calibrate geomechanical models. In this paper we present a methodology to model compaction and subsidence, combining results from rock mechanics experiments and surface deformation measurements. Besides the optical spirit-levelling data, InSAR data are also used for inversion to compaction and calibration of compaction models. Residual analysis, i.e. analysis of the difference between measurement and model output, provides confidence in the model results used for subsidence forecasting and as input to seismological models.

Ever since the first mosasaur restorations were published, these extinct marine reptiles have been pictured with either notched, forked or undivided tongues. Here, we present an overview of existing iconography, a review of the previous literature, and we discuss how best to reconstruct tongue form in mosasaurs. Despite disagreement about their precise phylogenetic position, most authors consider mosasaurs members of the Varanoidea, derived anguimorphans including Helodermatidae, Varanidae, Lanthanotus and probably snakes. All anguimorphans share a diploglossan (two-part) tongue, in which the foretongue is derived and modified into a highly protrusible chemosensor, while the hindtongue is plesiomorphic, retaining well-developed papillae, mucocytes and robust posterior lobes. We suggest that mosasaurs had a diploglossan tongue that remained in a relatively underived state. The form of the tongue would probably have been most like modern Heloderma or Lanthanotus with a protrusible chemosensory foretongue and a plesiomorphic, papillose hindtongue. Such a tongue is consistent with well-developed vomeronasal chemoreception through tongue-flicking, with the retention of the ancestral function of hyolingual food transport and swallowing following jaw-prehension of prey. The presence of paired fenestrae in the palate associated with the vomers, as well as the presence of pterygoid teeth are in accordance with such a tongue form in mosasaurs.

Taphonomic analysis of Eemian marine mollusks and barnacles at Ristinge Klint on the island of Langeland (Denmark) provides a distinct record of a temporal succession in preservation states. Four different states of preservation are recognized and related to a decreasing hydrodynamic regime in the depositional setting of the Eemian Baltic Sea. The states show a deepening-upward transition from shallow bay environment towards deeper offshore environment. The depositional setting changed significantly in hydrodynamics about 620 and 1550 years into the Eemian (130,000 to 115,000 years BP), according to biostratigraphic correlation with the varves of the Bispingen succession. The taxonomic composition of the paleofauna supports such a deepening-upward interpretation with a contemporaneous change from brackish water to nearly full marine conditions. The sea bottom was affected by at least one period of oxygen deficiency. The analysis also shows that the preservation of shells varies according to differences in shell structures and life habits. Here we show how these differences should be considered in paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on taphonomic analyses. Taphonomy may play an important role in understanding the hydrodynamic conditions within the Eemian Baltic Sea.

Until recently, most archaeologists assumed that human occupation of the Dutch river area in the Neolithic period and Bronze Age was rare and predominantly seasonal. Settlement and land use were thought to be limited to abandoned alluvial ridges and aeolian dunes. However, recent archaeological research revealed that Neolithic and Bronze Age human activity occurred at many locations in the Rhine-Meuse Delta. Human settlement and agricultural land use in the Rhine-Meuse delta from at least 3200 BC to 1100 AD was much more common than previously thought. Crevasse splay complexes of active and abandoned river systems proved to have provided favourable sites for settlements. These elevated areas were suitable for agriculture, as they were fertile, easy to plough and possessed suitable hydrological conditions. In addition, people could exploit the surrounding floodplain for hunting, fishing or herding their cattle. Furthermore, the river or residual river channel was near for transport. From the start of the Middle Bronze Age B (1400 BC) occupation of crevasse splay deposits in the delta was widespread. Farmsteads were built on splays that varied in size and morphology. Some locations were abandoned after a few decades, while others remained occupied during a much longer period. During the period of occupation, the crevasse splays gradually lost their relatively high position in the landscape due to subsidence and ongoing sedimentation on the floodplain.

LIDAR data combined with digital coring databases and/or detailed soil maps have proven to be an excellent method to identify and map crevasse splays and archaeological sites on these. The resulting new maps form a major basis for archaeological prospection and preservation policy.

Part of the gravelly deposits of a combined Rhine-Meuse river of Middle Pleistocene age in the central Netherlands contains early Middle Palaeolithic artefacts. Although not in their original position, a significant part of these artefacts is hardly abraded, indicating limited fluvial transport. The artefacts have mainly been made from fluvial flint gravel boulders, originating from the Meuse catchment. Thus far, inferences for the age of the artefacts are based on the stratigraphic context and floral and faunal remains, which suggest a MIS 7 age. In this paper, OSL dating carried-out in the framework of a research aimed at the paleogeographical reconstruction of the Rhine-Meuse fluvial system in the central Netherlands and a review of published data are used to provide absolute age constraints for the artefact-bearing deposits. It is argued that the deposits were formed during the glacial phase directly preceding the Drenthe substage of the late Saalian (early MIS 6), and that at least a part of the artefacts has approximately the same age.

Alluvial deposits of the Loire/Arroux trunk/tributary system record distinct, synchronous episodes of regional fluvial adjustment. Changes in facies and depositional style through time can be interpreted with a modern analogue model that relates vegetative cover/human influence with sediment supply, and modes of atmospheric circulation with the paths and styles of storms that drive variable discharge regimes across western Europe.

Zonal atmospheric circulation results in a Mediterranean style climate over southern Burgundy, producing dry conditions punctuated by infrequent, large floods. Episodic overbank sedimentation and the burial of thin paleosols in sandy overbank facies is indicative of this style of fluvial activity, ca 1300 years BP. Humans may have increased the available volume of fine grained sediment at this times through increased agricultural activity along valley axes, however facies match that expected from a ‘flashy’ discharge regime.

In contrast, meridional circulation patterns result in a maritime style climate over southern Burgundy, with the intrusion of storms, moist conditions and frequent, moderate magnitude discharges. Wide, deep channels, thick channel facies and thin overbank facies are indicative of this style of fluvial activity, recorded in deposits dating to ca 4050 to 3200 years BP. Strong meridional conditions and extreme climatic variability during the Little Ice Age resulted in very large discharges that straightened and widened channels, while scouring and obscuring older terraces (ca 500 years BP). Deposition over the last two centuries is related to increasingly zonal circulation and infrequent, large (over-bank) floods. Changes in fluvial dynamics over the last 300 years can be attributed primarily to climatic control, as there has been very little change in land-use over that period.

Presented are the first formal descriptions of mosasaur remains of Maastrichtian age from the Danish mainland (Jylland, Sjælland); just two taxa are recognised, viz. Mosasaurus cf. hoffmanni and Plioplatecarpus sp. Recent finds include an association of skeletal fragments, inclusive of a single marginal tooth crown, from within 10 metres or so of the K/T boundary near Holtug, Stevns Klint (Sjælland, eastern Denmark), here assigned to Plioplatecarpus sp. A brief review of previous records of Danish mosasaurs is added.

Variation in human activities has greatly impacted the processes and intensities of erosion, sediment transport and storage throughout the Late Holocene, and many lowland rivers around the world have responded to these variations. Although this long-term process–response relationship has been established before, the effects of short-term (c.200-year) changes in human impact on lowland rivers are less well studied. Here, we followed an integrated approach whereby observations of floodplain changes are evaluated against detailed data on human impact for three lowland rivers in the Belgian loess belt: Dijle, Mombeek and Gete rivers. Pollen data were used to reconstruct changes in local and regional vegetation and to calculate human impact scores. Corings along transects and a database of c.160 radiocarbon ages were used to reconstruct geomorphic changes in the river valleys. Our results show a decrease in human impact between 200 and 800 AD, which can be related to the decreased population density in Europe during the first millennium AD. During this period, forests in the studied catchments regenerated, soil erosion decreased, hillslope–floodplain connectivity decreased due to the regeneration of valley-side vegetation barriers, and sediment input in the floodplain decreased. A reaction to this decreased human impact can be observed in the river valleys during the first millennium AD, with a regrowth of the alder carr forest and an increase in the organic matter content of the alluvial deposits with a local reactivation of peat growth. The observed trajectories of Belgian river valleys during the first millennium AD provide more insight into the sensitivity of these river valleys to short-term variations in human impact. These results can in turn be used to better estimate the effects of future changes in the catchments on the fluvial system.

We address aseismic fault slip and the onset of seismicity resulting from depletion-induced or injection-induced stresses in reservoirs with pre-existing vertical or inclined faults. Building on classic results, we discuss semi-analytical modelling techniques for fault slip including dislocation theory, Cauchy-type singular integral equations and the use of Chebyshev polynomials for their solution and an eigenvalue-based stability analysis. We consider slip patch development during depletion for faults with zero, constant static and slip-weakening friction, and our results confirm earlier findings based on numerical simulation, in particular the aseismic growth of two slip patches that may subsequently merge and/or become unstable resulting in nucleation of seismic slip. New findings include improved approximate expressions for the induced seismic moment per unit strike length and a description of the effect of coupling between the slip patches which affects both forward simulation and eigenvalue computation for high values of the ratio of fault throw to reservoir height. Our implementation based on analytical inversion and semi-analytical integration with Chebyshev polynomials is more efficient and more robust than our numerical integration approach. It is not yet well suited for Monte Carlo simulation, which typically requires sub-second simulation times, but with some further development that option seems to be within reach. Moreover, our results offer a possibility for embedded fault modelling in large-scale numerical simulation tools.

One of the major scientific objectives of ESA's JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2022 and planned to arrive at the Jovian system in 2030, is to characterise the internal water ocean and overlying ice shell of Jupiter's largest moon Ganymede. As part of the strategy developed to realise this objective, the tidal response of Ganymede's interior will be constrained by JUICE's measurements of surface displacements (by the Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) instrument) and variations in the gravitational potential (by the 3GM radio science package) due to the acting diurnal tides. Here we calculate the tidal response at the surface of Ganymede for several plausible internal configurations in order to analyse the relation between the tidal response and the geophysical parameters that characterise Ganymede's interior. Similarly to the case of Jupiter's smallest icy satellite Europa, the tidal response of Ganymede in the presence of a subsurface ocean, which could be as large as about 3.5 m in terms of the induced radial deformation, mostly depends on the structural (thickness, density) and rheological (rigidity, viscosity) properties of the ice-I shell. Nevertheless, the dependence of the tidal response on several geophysical parameters of the interior, in particular on the thickness and rigidity of the ice-I shell, does not allow for the unambiguous determination of the shell thickness from tidal measurements alone. Additional constraints could be provided by the measurement of forced longitudinal librations at the surface, as their amplitude is more sensitive to the rigidity than to the thickness of the shell.

Besides the Oligocene Boom Clay, the Ypresian clays – part of the Eocene Ieper Group (Kortrijk Formation and Kortemark Member) – are currently being investigated as an alternative host rock for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste in Belgium and the Netherlands. In this study, broad-ion-beam milling and high resolution scanning electron microscopy (BIB-SEM) analyses were carried out to analyse the mineral fabrics and microstructures of representative Ypresian clay samples from different depths of the ON-Kallo-1 borehole (Kallo, Belgium). Qualitative microstructural observations indicate that mineral fabrics and pore morphologies in fine-grained samples are comparable to those found for fine-grained Boom Clay, but most of the Ypresian clay samples analysed also contained a significant silt fraction, which is associated with larger inter-aggregate pores, coated by a thin, very low porous clay layer. Quantitative pore-shape analysis shows lower axial ratios and elongations, as well as higher roundness and circularities for pores in the clay matrix of the more coarse-grained samples, compared to the fine-grained samples. The contribution of large pores (>1 × 107 nm² pore area) to the total BIB-SEM observed porosity was found to correlate with the non-clay mineral (NCM) content of a sample. Frequencies of pore sizes within the clay matrix follow a power-law distribution, hinting towards the possibility of up-scaling of the nanometre-scale observations to larger scale (micro-) structural features of the material. Power-law exponents are comparable to values found for power-law pore-size distributions within the clay matrix of the Boom Clay, which indicates similarity of the pore-space morphologies within the clay matrix of the Boom Clay and the Ypresian clays. Wood's metal injection, followed by (cooled BIB)-SEM analysis shows that all visible pores are connected via pore throats of diameter down to ~10 nm.

Two new records from the Amersfoort glacial basin are investigated by means of pollen analysis. The cores are situated in the deeper part, close to the original Eemian stratotype Amersfoort 1 (Zagwijn, 1961) and at the margin of the basin. The aim is to reconstruct the Eemian and Early Weichselian vegetation development and to explore the impact of accommodation space, influx of allochthonous pollen and geomorphology on the vegetation composition. The results of the Amersfoort Basin are compared to the current Eemian stratotype in the Amsterdam Basin and other Eemian sites in the Netherlands. An almost complete Eemian to Early Weichselian sequence (E2-EWII) was retrieved from the deeper part of the Amersfoort basin. The late Saalian (LS) to early Eemian transition is not recorded in the Amersfoort basin, in contrast to the deeper Amsterdam Basin. The basin marginal core Den Treek reveals a condensed late Eemian (E5-6) and Early Weichselian (EW I-II) succession showing the importance of accommodation space. The first impact of the Eemian transgression is registered at the E3 to E4a boundary in the Amersfoort and Amsterdam basins, and highest sea level is proposed at the end of pollen zone E5. Upstream in the Eemian delta, in the palaeo-Vecht valley and IJssel Basin, the transgression is recorded later.

The influx of reworked (allochthonous) pollen in clastic sediment units hampers vegetation and climatic reconstructions during the LS and Eemian. The early appearance of Picea in zone E4 and Abies in zone E5 in clastic sediment intervals can be related to long-distance transport by the river Rhine and redistribution in the Eemian delta.

Local vegetation development can complicate regional biostratigraphic correlations. Alnus, considered characteristic for the late Eemian (E5-6), shows large differences over short distances in the Amersfoort Basin, related to local alder growth since Eemian E3. Carpinus, diagnostic for pollen zone E5, shows high values in the basins adjacent to higher, well-drained ice-pushed ridges, but low values in low-relief environments. Salt- to brackish-water marshes were present during high sea level in zone E5 in the Amsterdam and Amersfoort basins, while further upstream in the Rhine delta brackish to fresh-water tidal conditions dominated.

In line with Zagwijn (1961), the E6 to EWI boundary is defined at the first opening of the vegetation cover with Calluna, Poaceae and Artemisia increase, often coinciding with a lithological change from organic to clastic deposition, reflecting increased landscape instability.

The cores from the Amersfoort basin reveal a complete Eemian to Early Weichselian record. It is suggested to define the boundary stratotype for the base of the Weichselian Stage in the Amersfoort Basin. The current stratotype Amsterdam-Terminal reveals a fully developed LS to Eemian transition and contains the boundary stratotype for the base of the Eemian Stage.

In Germany, mosasaur remains are very rare and only incompletely known. However, the earliest records date back to the 1830s, when tooth crowns were found in the chalk of the Isle of Rügen. A number of prominent figures in German palaeontology and geosciences of the 19th and 20th centuries focused on these remains, including, among others, Friedrich von Hagenow, Hermann von Meyer, Andreas Wagner, Hanns Bruno Geinitz and Josef Pompeckj. Most of these works were only short notes, given the scant material. However, the discovery of fragmentary cranial remains in Westphalia in 1908 led to a more comprehensive discussion, which is also of historical importance, as it illustrates the discussions on the highly controversial and radical universal phylogenetic theory proposed by Gustav Steinmann in 1908. This theory saw the existence of continuous lines of descent, evolving in parallel, and did not regard higher taxonomic units as monophyletic groups but as intermediate paraphyletic stages of evolution. In this idea, nearly all fossil taxa form part of these lineages, which extend into the present time, and natural extinction occurs very rarely, if ever. In Steinmann's concept, mosasaurs were not closely related to squamates but formed an intermediate member in a anagenetic chain from Triassic thalattosaurs to extant baleen whales. The newly found specimen led Josef Pompeckj to write a vehement rebuttal to Steinmann's theory, published in 1910, showing that his conclusions were conjectural and speculative, being based on convergence and not supported by scientific evidence. This particular specimen, housed in Göttingen, later also inspired a piece of palaeoart by Franz Roubal under the instructions of Othenio Abel.

With the exception of a vertebra from the Campanian of former East Prussia (now Russian Federation), and a possible vertebra from the Cenomanian of Dresden, Saxony, all datable material – today partly lost – originated from the northern part of present-day Germany and stratigraphically from the Campanian–Maastrichtian. The purported record from the Cenomanian of Bavaria (southeastern Germany) was most probably an error, based on Upper Jurassic crocodilian material.

The Suriname–Guyana and Ghana–Ivorian Basins exhibit strong geological similarities which are of interest from a petroleum exploration point of view. These include (1) a well-developed system of Late Cretaceous erosional canyons allowing coarse-grained shallow-water clastics to enter the deep marine basin to form attractive turbidite exploration targets; (2) a broad shelf with strong longshore currents which sort and transport coarse clastics into the canyon heads; (3) an organic-rich Cenomanian–Turonian hydrocarbon source rock which is thermally mature in the centre of the basin; and (4) a series of extensional fault-networks along the shelf margin that extend upwards from the Rift Sequence into the overlying Drift Sequence and which, along with the canyon geometries, enable migrating oil and gas to accumulate in combination structural and stratigraphic traps. In June 2007, Tullow and its partners made an important discovery in offshore Ghana, at Mahogany, which subsequently became the giant Jubilee field. Tullow is currently applying the same geoscientific technologies in offshore Suriname in the search for analogous subtle combination traps.

Bright white sands consisting almost exclusively of quartz (sometimes called ‘silver sands’) occur throughout the world; those in Europe commonly date from the late Paleogene and early Neogene. They have a clearly sedimentary origin, and they may have originated in various types of environments, but precise data are lacking because sedimentary research into these deposits (that have a high economic value) has been scarce. It is most likely that diagenetic processes are largely responsible for their exceptional appearance, but it is highly unlikely that all silver sands were subject to the same diagenetic conditions.

The precise origin of most of the silver sands is still enigmatic. In the case of the silver sands in the Dutch/German/Belgian border area, it appears that long-lasting in situ leaching by humic acids (resulting in an extremely low percentage of heavy minerals), in combination with differential cementation (and later partial dissolution of the cement), must be held responsible for the wide variety of the characteristics of these sands, including locally sharp boundaries with the underlying sands, lack of precipitates at the contact plane with the underlying sands, and the joint occurrence of strongly weathered and fresh specimens of the same heavy-mineral species.

In the context of the investigation of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the Cenozoic Lower Rhine Basin, the construction of a volume-balanced kinematic model of a small faulted domain with detailed spatial information on strata and fault geometry from a set of parallel geological sections is under development. A 3D geometry model is built that allows for relative movements of blocks at fault surfaces. Rouby’s method of restoration in the map plane is used to determine horizontal displacement fields. The 3D and 3D(t) geometry models are supported by the object-oriented geometry database tool GeoToolKit for storage and retrieval of selected parts of the model using queries referring to spatial and temporal criteria, while visualization is based on key frame technique.

The Amer fault is a 30 km long normal fault, which generated the damaging earthquakes of March and May 1427. Triangular facets, wine glass drainage basins, alluvial fans and scarps along the Amer fault mountain front provide evidence of its recent activity. Topographic profiling, electrical logging, tomographic and high-resolution seismic profiling along the northern segment of the Amer fault showed the following: i) no evidence of surface deformation in recent deposits; ii) fault scarps produced by the Amer fault located only on old alluvial fans, probably Pleistocene in age, and iii) Amer fault related deformation reaching upper Quaternary levels, but not the uppermost horizons. The high sedimentation rate (nearly one order of magnitude greater than the fault slip rate) due to the filling of the lake, which resulted from the damming of the Fluvià river by the Bosc de Tosca lava flow (17,000 yr BP), can account for the absence of surface deformation on Holocene sediments.

Over the past decade in the Netherlands, most operators have only developed a single doublet. The learning effect from these single events is suboptimal, and operators have only been capable of developing doublets in areas with relatively low exploration risk. This ‘stand-alone’ approach can be significantly improved by a collective approach to derisk regions with similar subsurface characteristics. Such a play-based portfolio approach, which is common in the oil and gas industry, can help to accelerate the development of the geothermal industry through unlocking resource potential in areas marked by high upfront geological risk, effectively helping reduce costs for the development. The basis of the methodology is to deploy new information to the play portfolio by trading off with the risk of the first wells, resulting in a strong geological risk reduction.

The added value of the portfolio approach is demonstrated for the Netherlands in this paper through a comparison with a ‘stand-alone’ development. In the stand-alone approach, each new project will be equally risky, and therefore relatively unprofitable. In the case of a portfolio approach, all experience about the play is used optimally for derisking. In case of success, subsequent projects will have a higher chance of being successful, due to the experience gained in previous projects. Even if a project fails, this may help in increasing the probability of success for subsequent projects. For plays that are initially considered too risky for the market to start developing, the value of information (VoI) of a play-based portfolio approach will help by derisking the play to such an extent that it becomes attractive for the market to develop, even at high initial risk. It can be demonstrated for several geothermal plays in the Netherlands that by adopting the portfolio approach, the probability of a play being developed becomes higher, the number of successfully developed projects increases and the average profitability of the project will also be higher. Five more advantages are: (1) continuous improvement by integrated project development, (2) cost reduction through synergy, efficiency and standardisation, (3) optimisation of the surface heat demand and infrastructure, (4) the possibility of structural research and development (R&D) and innovation, and (5) financing advantages. The advantages reinforce each other.

A preliminary estimate of the geothermal potential of the Netherlands adopting the portfolio approach is between 90 and 275 Petajoules (PJ). For about 350 doublets being developed, producing about 70 PJ, the value of the advantage of the play-based portfolio approach is €2 billion for the three main plays: Rotliegend, Triassic and Jurassic/Cretaceous. The learning effects of synergy, efficiency and standardisation are expected to be significant.

Assemblages of brackish and marine diatoms have been examined from Upper Paleocene-Lower Eocene strata of the Belgian Basin (Knokke well) and the Dieppe-Hampshire Basin (Saint-Josse borehole and Ailly sections). The diatoms observed are invariably preserved in pyrite as internal moulds and their siliceous skeletons are completely replaced by pyrite by epigenesis. Three major diatom assemblages have been observed which can be used to approximate the position of the recently defined Paleocene-Eocene boundary (defined by the Carbon Isotope Excursion). This isotope excursion occurs just below the strong increase in the abundance of Fenestrella antiqua and in the vicinity of the abundance peak of Coscinodiscus morsianus var. moelleri. They also allow correlations of the lithostratigraphic units of the Belgian Basin with the formations of the Dieppe-Hampshire and central North Sea Basins. For instance, investigations of diatoms recorded in the Knokke Clay Member of the Knokke well indicate that this unit corresponds to the lower units of the ‘Sparnacian facies’ of the Dieppe-Hampshire Basin and to the Sele Formation of the North Sea Basin.
