Nonviral DNA delivery systems have great therapeutic and prophylactic potential, but their clinical utility has been limited by three major barriers: (1) inefficient uptake by the cell, (2) insufficient release of DNA within the cell, and (3) ineffective nuclear targeting and transport. Since the size of most cells is in the micrometer regime and the space inside a cell is extremely crowded, ideal DNA delivery systems must be in the nanometer range. Advancements in nanoscale science and nanotechnology have provided us with novel nanoparticles that may overcome all of these barriers, leading to higher-efficiency DNA delivery. This review article will focus on the recent developments in nanoscale DNA delivery systems that consist of chemical dendrimers, DNA dendrimers, nanospheres, nanolayers, nanorods, and nanotubes. The future of DNA delivery systems that interface with nanotechnology is also discussed.

This article celebrating Arthur von Hippel's career considers the expanding frontiers in the field of biomaterials, a subject that intrigued him given his interests in the molecular engineering of materials. The interface of materials science and biology started to develop decades ago when synthetic materials were first used to repair parts of the human body. An exciting transformation is now occurring in the field, as advances in biology are used to engineer bioactive materials at the molecular level. The transformation is going further to other frontiers that include the use of sophisticated materials to obtain biological information and learn biology, the creation of materials that imitate biological microstructures and functions, and the manipulation of organisms to create artificial materials.

Since the development of the light microscope in the 16th century, optical device size and performance have been limited by diffraction. Optoelectronic devices of today are much bigger than the smallest electronic devices for this reason. Achieving control of light—material interactions for photonic device applications at the nanoscale requires structures that guide electromagnetic energy with subwavelength-scale mode confinement. By converting the optical mode into nonradiating surface plasmons, electromagnetic energy can be guided in structures with lateral dimensions of less than 10% of the free-space wavelength. A variety of methods—including electron-beam lithography and self-assembly—have been used to construct both particle and planar plasmon waveguides. Recent experimental studies have confirmed the strongly coupled collective plasmonic modes of metallic nanostructures. In plasmon waveguides consisting of closely spaced silver rods, electromagnetic energy transport over distances of 0.5 m has been observed. Moreover, numerical simulations suggest the possibility of multi-centimeter plasmon propagation in thin metallic stripes. Thus, there appears to be no fundamental scaling limit to the size and density of photonic devices, and ongoing work is aimed at identifying important device performance criteria in the subwavelength size regime. Ultimately, it may be possible to design an entire class of subwavelength-scale optoelectronic components (waveguides, sources, detectors, modulators) that could form the building blocks of an optical device technology—a technology scalable to molecular dimensions, with potential imaging, spectroscopy, and interconnection applications in computing, communications, and chemical/biological detection.

This review of photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) based on inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) deals with the mechanisms of operation and the various factors that influence the overall efficiency of PECs. The factors addressed include ICP composition and oxidation state, the use of nanostructured surfaces and interfaces, and the PEC electrolyte and redox mediator.

Biomaterials can potentially enhance the delivery of viral and nonviral vectors for both basic science and clinical applications.Vectors typically consist of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) packaged with proteins, lipids, or cationic polymers, which facilitate cellular internalization and trafficking. These vectors can associate with biomaterials that support cell adhesion, a process we term substrate-mediated delivery. Substrate immobilization localizes the DNA and the delivery vector to the cellular microenvironment.The interaction between the vector and substrate must be appropriately balanced to mediate immobilization, yet allow for cellular internalization. Balancing the binding between the biomaterial and the vector is dependent upon the surface chemistries of the material and the vector, which can be designed to provide both specific (e.g., biotin–avidin, the strongest known noncovalent interaction between a protein and its ligand) and nonspecific (e.g., van der Waals) interactions. In this review, we describe the biomaterial and vector properties that mediate binding and gene transfer, identify potential applications, and present opportunities for further development.

Numerous barriers, both extracellular and intracellular, hinder successful and efficient nonviral nucleic acid delivery. Due to their small size and ability to specifically recognize and interact with molecular targets, peptides can be incorporated as modular elements into synthetic nucleic acid delivery systems to overcome many of these barriers. Three classes of peptides that have frequently been integrated as components in nucleic acid delivery systems include cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), endosomal release peptides, and nuclear localization sequences (NLSs).Various additional classes of peptides show promise for enhancing nucleic acid delivery by targeting cell surface receptors, inhibiting nuclease activity, and directing nucleic acids toward intracellular targets. In addition to a review of the various existing approaches to peptide-enhanced nucleic acid delivery, this article will discuss strategies for the development of new peptides and approaches for the incorporation of these peptides into nucleic acid delivery systems.

The essential cost-driving factor for the production of classical photovoltaic devices is the expensive investment in costly semiconductor processing technologies. This unfavorable cost structure has so far prohibited the technology from having a significant impact on global energy production. Nevertheless, the continued high interest in photovoltaics originates from the fact that they represent the only truly portable renewable-energy conversion technology available today. Therefore, the potential of fabricating organic photovoltaic elements on low-cost, thin plastic substrates by standard printing and coating techniques and packaged by lamination is not only intriguing, but highly attractive from a cost standpoint. In this article, we discuss the economic and technical production aspects for organic photovoltaics.
