Alkali-borosilicate glasses (ABS) are used as host immobilization matrices for different radioactive waste streams and are characterized by their ability to incorporate a wide variety of metal oxides with respectively high waste loadings. The vitreous wasteform is also characterized by very good physical and chemical durability. The durability of three ABS compositions were analyzed by investigating their leaching behavior using the MCC1 test protocol and these data were used to investigate the waste components retention in the altered layer and the evolution of the interfacial water composition during the test. The results indicated that the Mg species evolution is exceptional with respect to other alkaline elements and dependent on glass matrix composition and leaching progress, while transition elements speciation is fairly constant throughout leaching process and independent on glass compositions. Si and B species are changing during leaching process and are affected by waste composition. For modified wasteform sample, evolution of Mg, Si and B species is respectively constant, whereas at highest waste loading, these elements have fairly constant speciation evolution within the first 2 weeks of leaching.

Within the framework of the IAEA project “CRAFT” (2011-2014), specialists of JSC “VO “Safety” participated in working group “Safety assessment of the Radon-type facilities”. The IAEA GSG-3 methodology was used in order to address the issue of safety assessment of radioactive waste removal from historical near-surface storage facility of the Radon type. SAFRAN tool (Sweden) was used for safety assessment of a historical Radon type storage facility. Practical experience of SAFRAN application has shown that it can play a significant role in managing records and knowledge on radioactive waste, nuclear facility site, characteristics of geological environment and safety barriers. It can provide reliable long-term storage and effective management of safety related records for the purposes of safety reassessments, review and supervision.

We report a facile method to fabricate CuNi nano-octahedra and nanocubes using a colloidal synthesis approach. The CuNi nanocrystals terminated with exclusive crystallographic facets were controlled and achieved by a group of synergetic capping ligands in a hot solution system. Specifically, the growth of {111}-bounded CuNi nano-octahedra is derived by a thermodynamic control, whereas the generation of {100}-terminated CuNi nanocubes is steered by a kinetic capping of chloride. Using a reduction of 4-nitrophenol with sodium borohydride as a model reaction, CuNi nano-octahedra and nanocubes demonstrated a strong facet-dependence due to their different surface energies although both exhibited remarkable catalytic activity with the high rate constant over mass (k/m). A kinetic study indicated that this is a pseudo first-order reaction with an excess of sodium borohydride. CuNi nanocubes as the catalysts showed better catalytic performance (k/m = 385 s-1•g-1) than the CuNi nano-octahedra (k/m = 120 s-1•g-1), indicating that 4-nitrophenol and hydrogen were adsorbed on the {100} facets with their molecules parallel to the surface much easier than those on {111} facets.

The purpose of this work was the synthesis of the perovskites with rare earth, by gel combustion method with pigmenting, magnetic and luminescent properties. The synthesis of perovskite structure is important for material development, with multi features. In this work, the synthesis was from metal oxides by the method of combustion of gels at 500 °C, for 10 s. Color of perovskites obtained, with nanometric particle size (31-44 nm) was analysed by CIEL*a*b* with tonalities ranged from white to pink except for Pr-perovskites with yellow and brown. Its paramagnetic properties were verified by magnetic susceptibility. Its luminescence was at 260 nm, except for Pr-perovskites. This work opens an important opportunity to develop ceramic pigments with perovskites structures integrating other properties as luminescence and paramagnetism by combustion sol-gel method.

Phase change materials (PCMs) are getting increasing interest due to their capacity to absorb, store and release heat energy. Their effectiveness is characterized by quantities of absorbed/released heat energy, expressed as enthalpy. Specifically, the larger is the enthalpy, the more efficient thermoregulation effect is achieved. With this in mind, PCMs can be used in the manufacture of thermally regulated clothing in order to minimize heat strain and simultaneously improve thermal comfort. Moreover, such materials also modify their infrared radiation emission during phase transition, thus they can be envisioned to exploit thermal shielding applications. The aim of the present research was to investigate the infrared emissivity of textiles composed by cotton yarns with dispersed PCMs. The organic microcapsules of phase change materials, having different binding to the fibre mechanisms, were padded onto the fabric surface by pad-dry-cure method. The thermal properties and stabilities were measured using differential scanning calorimetry, while infrared emissivity was characterized using infrared thermographic technique. The obtained experimental results show a dynamic tuning of IR emissivity during heating/cooling process which can be correlated to the type and properties (enthalpy of fusion) of the corresponding PCM.

Enzymes can be a renewable source of catalytic agents and thus be interesting for sustainable approaches to create and modify functional materials. Here, thin hydrogel layers were prepared as thin coatings on hard substrates by immobilized horseradish peroxidase. Hydrophilic 4-arm star shaped telechelics from oligo(ethylene glycol) bearing on average 55% end groups derived from aromatic amino acids served as monomers and enzymatic substrates. Shifts of the contact angle from 84° to 62° for the wetting process and of zeta potential towards the neutral range illustrated an alteration of physicochemical properties of the model surfaces by a hydrophilic shielding. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments enabled the qualitative and quantitative proof of hydrogel deposition at the interface with thicknesses in the medium nanometer size range. Conceptually, as the immobilized enzyme becomes entrapped in the hydrogel and the crosslinking mechanism bases on a radical reaction after enzymatic activation of the monomers with a limited diffusivity and lifetime, the formed network material can be assumed to be inhomogeneous on the molecular level. On the macroscale, however, relative homogeneity of the coating was observed via ToF-SIMS and AFM mapping. As an exemplary functional evaluation in view of bioanalytical applications, the thrombogenicity of the coating was studied in static tests with human blood from several donors. In the future, this “coating-from” approach may be explored for cell culture substrate coatings, for protein/biofilm repellence in technical applications, or in bioanalytical devices.

We describe experimental approaches to real time examination of the microstructural evolution of Ti 6%Al 4%V upon cooling from above the beta transus (~995 °C) while imaging in the scanning electron microscope. Ti 6%Al 4%V is a two phase, α+β titanium alloy with high strength and corrosion resistance. The β →α transformation on cooling can give rise to different microstructures and properties through various thermal treatments. Fully lamellar microstructures, bi-modal microstructures, and equiaxed microstructures can each be obtained by accessing different cooling rates upon the final treatment above the beta temperature, each resulting in uniquely enhanced material properties.

Utilizing the capabilities of a heating/ tensile stage developed by Kammrath & Weiss Inc., are able to apply real-time imaging techniques in the scanning electron microscope to monitor the development of the microstructure. Annealing temperatures up to 1100 °C are attainable, with cooling rates ranging from 0.1 ° C per second to 3.3 °C per second. This has allowed us to directly observe the formation of lamellae at different annealing temperature/ cooling rate combinations to determine the lamellar microstructure width, separation, and colony size.
