Nature is ripe with biological organisms that can interact with its surroundings to continuously morph their surface texture. Many attempts have been made to optimize artificial surfaces depending on operational needs; however, most of these architected materials only focus on enhancing a specific material property or functionality. This study introduces a new class of instability-induced morphable structures, herein referred to as “Active Skins”, which enables on-demand, reversible, surface morphing through buckling-induced feature deployment. By taking advantage of a preconceived auxetic unit cell geometrical design, mechanical instabilities were introduced to facilitate rapid out-of-plane deformations when in-plane strains are applied. Here, these notches were introduced at judiciously chosen locations in an array of unit cells to elicit unique patterns of out-of-plane deformations to pave way for controlling bulk Active Skin behavior. These purposefully designed imperfections were employed for selectively actuating them for applications ranging from camouflage to surface morphing to soft robotic grippers.

A 1D reactive transport model has been implemented in iCP (interface COMSOL Multiphysics and PhreeqC) to assess the corrosion of Spent Fuel (SF), considered as homogeneous UO2(am,hyd) doped with Pd. The model couples: i) generation of water radiolysis species by alpha and beta radiation considering the complete water radiolysis system with the kinetic reactions involving: H+, OH-, O2, H2O2, H2, HO2-, HO2·, O·, O-, O2-, H·, ·OH and e- ii) processes occurring in the spent fuel surface: oxidative dissolution reactions of UO2(am,hyd) and subsequent reduction of oxidized fuel, considering H2 activation by Pd, and iii) corrosion of Fe(s) in oxic and anoxic conditions. Process i) has been implemented in COMSOL and processes ii) and iii) have been implemented in PHREEQC with their kinetic constants being calibrated with different sets of experimental data published in the open literature. The model yields a UO2(am,hyd) dissolution rates similar to the values selected in safety assessments.

A series of highly attainable desymmetrized heterocyclic compounds with Donor-Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor-X (D-A-D-X) architectures were synthesized. The structures, where X corresponds to a heteroaromatic portion (pyridine, ferrocene, thiadiazolopyridine), were designed through computational analysis. Molecular geometries for all compounds were studied and parameters of charge transfer were computed in order to analyse the behaviour in each architecture. Spectroscopic properties (maximum absorption wavelengths, extinction coefficients and HOMO-LUMO gaps) were predicted and measured experimentally. UV-Vis absorption profiles and values of HOMO-LUMO optical gaps (in the vicinity of 2.0 eV), together with the computational results, are properties that position the obtained systems, as potential candidates for developing efficient photovoltaic materials based on synthetically accessible small organic molecules.

Metal Ir films were prepared by spray chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in air from an Ir precursor, (1,3-cyclohexadiene)(ethylcyclopentadienyl)iridium, Ir(EtCp)(CHD). Film deposition was ascertained at 270–430°C on a SiO2/Si substrate and the deposition rate increased with the deposition temperature but was saturated above 330°C. The obtained films consisted of Ir metal without any iridium oxide impurity irrespective of the deposition temperature. Films tended to orient to (111) with increasing deposition temperature. Resistivity of these Ir films decreased with increasing film thickness and reached to values on the order of 10-6 Ω・cm, which was the same order of the values for bulk Ir metal. Good step coverage was observed for the Ir metal films deposited at 270°C and 330°C. This shows that the simple spray CVD process in air is a good candidate for depositing Ir metal films with good conductivity and step coverage.

Various cases of medical implants produced through additive manufacturing (AM) in Ti6Al4V have been reported in literature. Not all manufacturing processes used, were qualified. In striving to deliver certified AM medical implants and devices, an ISO 13485:2016 quality management system was implemented in the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) of the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) in Bloemfontein, South Africa. This certification is valid for design, development and production of patient-specific custom-made titanium implants, preoperative models, jigs and cutting-guides in nylon through AM, and contract-production of these products. For maintaining this quality management system, the generation of data to validate the individual processes in the AM process-chain is crucial to prove the DMLS product-quality of CRPM’s products. During the past five years, directed research data was produced and published to prove that medical implants produced through DMLS can fully comply with the accepted international standards for material, physical, chemical and mechanical properties of such parts. The paper discusses the quality management system’s establishment; materials research projects executed to generate validation data are mentioned; and examples of customised titanium implants for restoring the quality of life of patients are shown.

Monolayer (ML) molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) is a novel 2-dimensional (2D) semiconductor whose properties have many applications in devices. Despite its potential, ML MoS₂ is limited in its use due to its degradation under exposure to ambient air. Therefore, studies of possible degradation prevention methods are important. It is well established that air humidity plays a major role in the degradation. In this paper, we investigate the effects of substrate hydrophobicity on the degradation of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown ML MoS2. We use optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman mapping to investigate the degradation of ML MoS2 grown on SiO2 and Si3N4 that are hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates, respectively. Our results show that the degradation of ML MoS₂ on Si3N4 is significantly less than the degradation on SiO2. These results show that using hydrophobic substrates to grow 2D transition metal dichalcogenide ML materials may diminish ambient degradation and enable improved protocols for device manufacturing.

The emerging breakthroughs in space exploration, smart textiles, and novel automobile designs have increased technological demand for high temperature electronics. In this snapshot review we first discuss the fundamental challenges in achieving electronic operation at elevated temperatures, briefly review current efforts in finding materials that can sustain extreme heat, and then highlight the emergence of organic semiconductors as a new class of materials with potential for high temperature electronics applications. Through an overview of the state-of-the art materials designs and processing methods, we will layout molecular design principles and fabrication strategies towards achieving thermally stable operation in organic electronics.

This paper presents the characterization of laterite-cement-based matrix composites, reinforced with chemically modified bamboo fibers. Fiber extraction and chemical modification were first explored by soaking slabs of bamboos in NaOH solution (5 wt.% of NaOH in distilled water) for 14 days. Fiber characterization, as well as the flexural and compressive strength of reinforced composites, were carried out with MTS universal mechanical testing machine. Comparative results on the compressive and flexural strength were obtained at 80 wt.% laterite (L) to 20 wt.% cement (C) with fiber ratios from 5-25 wt%. The compressive strength of the composites varied from 7.2 MPa (at 5 wt.% bamboo fiber) to 17.67 MPa (at 25 wt% fiber blocks). The hardness of the composites was found to improve from 66.67-75.0 HD with bamboo fibers. Results were then discussed for possible structural applications such as enhancing low-cost building blocks for rural communities in Ghana.

This contribution reports on the biosynthesis of nickel oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs & ZnO-NPs) via a natural extract from Moringa Oleifera leaves as an effective chelating and/or oxidizing/reduction agent of nickel nitrate hexahydrate and zinc nitrate hexahydrate. The structural and optical properties of these two types of semiconductors obtained in a similar procedure are investigated using X-rays Diffraction (XRD), Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), diffuse reflectance UV-Visible-NIR and Photoluminescence (PL) techniques. The structural analysis shows the formation of pure cubic NiO-NPs and pure wurtzite ZnO-NPs with an average crystallite size of 17.80 nm and 10.81 nm respectively. Their band gaps, calculated from the diffuse reflectance analysis were found to be 4.28 eV and 3.35 eV respectively.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has been shown to exhibit semiconducting and piezoelectric dual properties. This has led to a large commercial demand on ZnO for optoelectronics that operate at the blue-ultraviolet regions. Consequently, varying techniques have been devised to create different nanostructures of ZnO. Here, the single step synthesis of ZnO nanostructures was performed on Si(100) substrates with a thin ZnO seed-layer. A modified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was developed to accomplish the structure formation. Sb doping of the structures in the gas phase was performed to study its effects on structure and optoelectronic properties. Different structures were realized including nanofilaments, nanoparticles, microflowers, nanorods, nanotubes, and nanocolumns. Only nanorods/columns, and nanotubes are shown in this work. Morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used for structural studies. Optoelectronic properties were explored using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. PL data show the relative decrease in the number of defects and increase in crystal quality upon increasing reaction time. Significant structural effects were also observed upon doping. Some structural defects might be attributed to the diffusion of Sb ions into the lattices of ZnO, replacement of Zn by Sb, and ionic radii difference. These stacking faults are most likely the reason behind the dominance and broadening of DLE peak.

Controlled degradation of hydrogels enables several applications of these materials, including controlled drug and cell release applications and directed growth of neural networks. These applications motivate the need of a simulation framework for modeling controlled degradation in hydrogels. We develop a Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) framework for hydrogel degradation. As a model hydrogel, we prepare a network formed by end-linking tetra-arm polyethylene glycol precursors. We model bond breaking during degradation of this hydrogel as a stochastic process. The fraction of degradable bonds follows first order degradation kinetics. We characterize the rate of mass loss during degradation process.

Small angle scattering (SAS) is a widely used technique for characterizing structures of wide ranges of materials. For such wide ranges of applications of SAS, there exist a large number of ways to model the scattering data. While such analysis models are often available from various suites of SAS data analysis software packages, selecting the right model to start with poses a big challenge for beginners to SAS data analysis. Here, we present machine learning (ML) methods that can assist users by suggesting scattering models for data analysis. A series of one-dimensional scattering curves have been generated by using different models to train the algorithms. The performance of the ML method is studied for various types of ML algorithms, resolution of the dataset, and the number of the dataset. The degree of similarities among selected scattering models is presented in terms of the confusion matrix. The scattering model suggestions with prediction scores provide a list of scattering models that are likely to succeed. Therefore, if implemented with extensive libraries of scattering models, this method can speed up the data analysis workflow by reducing search spaces for appropriate scattering models.

In this work, we report a preliminary study, based on molecular dynamics simulations, about 3D carbon nanotube networks that could be formed inside the beta zeolites. We investigated their structural stability and mechanical properties. Our results show that from all possible carbon nanotubes that can be embedded inside the channels of the beta zeolite, the one with chirality (6,0) is the most stable. Using the carbon nanotube (6,0), it is possible to build 3D structures with both all (higher density) and only partially (lower density) filled zeolite channels. Under tensile uniaxial force, the 3D low-density carbon nanotube networks are anisotropic and can be stretched along the direction in which all nanotubes are perpendicular up to 130% of strain without fracture. Also, the porosity and network stiffness can be tuned depending on the amount of carbon nanotubes filling the channels of the zeolites.

This contribution provides the synthesis and characterization of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) which were prepared by green synthesis method using natural extract oranges peel skin (Peel Citrus Sinensis) as an effective bio-oxidizing/bio-reducing agent. The effect of different calcination temperatures on the size of the NiO NPs was investigated. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized by various techniques such as X-rays diffraction (XRD) results indicated that all the samples have a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure and confirmed the presence of high degree of crystallinity nature NiO NPs. The functional group composition of NiO NPs were investigated by using attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ART-FTIR), Photoluminescence (PL), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Leaching results to compare the dissolution behavior of a new type of fuel with additives (Advanced Doped Pellet Technology, ADOPT) with standard UO2 fuel are presented. Both fuels were irradiated in the same assembly of a commercial boiling water reactor to a local burnup of ∼58 MWd/kgU. Fuel fragments are leached in simplified groundwater in two autoclaves under hydrogen atmosphere, representing conditions in a canister failure scenario resulting in water intrusion for a spent nuclear fuel repository. Preliminary results indicate the uranium concentration decreased to 3-4x10-8 M after 421 days, slightly above the solubility of amorphous UO2. Xe has been detected in the gas phase of both autoclaves. The concentration of Cs and I seems to gradually approach constant values, yet the redox sensitive elements continue to slowly increase with time. The preliminary data obtained supports the hypothesis that there is no major difference in leaching behavior between the two fuels.

Perovskite solar cells continue to garner significant attention in the field of photovoltaics. As the optoelectronic properties of the absorbers become better understood, attention has turned to more deeply understanding the contribution of charge transport layers for efficient extraction of carriers. Titanium oxide is known to be an effective electron transport layer (ETL) in planar perovskite solar cells, but it is unlikely to result in the best device performance possible. To investigate the importance of band energy alignment between the electron transport layer and perovskite, we employ numerical modeling as a function of conduction band offset between these layers, interface recombination velocity, and ETL doping levels. Our simulations offer insight into the advantages of energy band alignment and allow us to determine a range of surface recombination velocities and ETL doping densities that will allow us to identify novel high performance ETL materials.
