Let G be a locally compact group and L1(G) be the group algebra of G. We show that G is abelian or compact if every continuous automorphism of L1(G)** maps L1(G) onto L1(G) This characterizes all groups with this property and answers a question raised by F. Ghahramani and A. T. Lau in [7]. We also show that if G is a compact group and θ is any (algebra) isomorphism from L1(G)** onto L1(H)**, then H is compact and θ maps L1(G) onto L1(H).

This paper is closely related to Bar-Natan's work, and fills in some of the gaps in [1]. Following his analogy of the extension of knot invariants to knots with double points to the notion of multivariate calculus on polynomials, we introduce a new notation which facilitates the formulation of a Leibniz type formula for the product of two Vassiliev invariants. This leads us to see how Bar-Natan's co-product of chord diagrams corresponds to multiplication of Vassiliev invariants. We also include a proof that the multiplication in is a consequence of Bar-Natan's 4T relation.

The last part of this paper consists of a proof that the space of weight systems is a sub-Hopf algebra of the space *, by means of the canonical projection.

The origin of this paper lies in a study of the unfolding space of the stratum N16 of singularity theory, and the question, at which points of the stratum the versal deformation space ceases to be topologically trivial over the stratum. This question turns out to be closely related to the study of how a plane section (= binary quintic) of a quintic curve varies as we deform the curve, either rigidly (under GL3) or equisingularly.

In this paper we investigate the geometry of simple germs of co-rank 1 maps from ℝ3 to ℝ3. Those of co-dimension 1 have already been dealt with by several authors. In [2], V. I. Arnold considered the problem of evolution of galaxies. For a medium of non-interacting particles in ℝ3 with an initial velocity distribution v = v(x) (and a positive density distribution), the initial motion of particles defines a time-dependent map gt: ℝ3 → ℝ3 given by gt(x) = x + tv(x). At some time t singularities occur and the critical values of gi correspond to points of condensation of particles. Arnold assumed the vector field v is a gradient, that is v = ∇S, for some potential S. J. W. Bruce generalized these results in [4] by dropping the assumption on the velocity distribution and studied generic 1-parameter families of map germs F: ℝ3, 0 → ℝ3, 0.

Suppose that f; Sn → E is a continuous map from the n-sphere to a 1-connected CW complex E, with n ≥ 2. One may suppose that f is a cofibration, so that there is a cofibration sequence , with f the attaching map of the cell en+1. Consider the homotopy fibre F of the inclusion E ↪ B, so that there is a homotopy fibration let δ; ΩB → F be the connectant of this fibration. The following definition is given by Félix and Lemaire in [11]: Definition 1·1. Suppose that k is a field of characteristic p ≥ 0. The attaching map f:Sn → E is: 1. p-inert if is surjective; 2. p-lazy if is zero; where H˜ denotes reduced homology and coefficients are taken in the field k.

The complete lattice generated by a totally atomic CSL ℒ and the projection lattice of a von Neumann algebra ℛ, commuting with ℒ, is reflexive. From this it follows that the strongly closed lattice generated by any CSL ℒ and the projection lattice of a properly infinite von Neumann algebra ℛ, commuting with ℒ, is reflexive.

Let D be a bounded region in ℝm, m ≥ 2. We say that a function u defined in D has asymptotic value α if there is a boundary path Γ:x(t), 0≤t<1, in D (that is, dist (x(t), ∂D)→0 as t→1), such that u(x(t))→α as t→1. If in addition, x(t)→ξ as t→1, then u has asymptotic value α at ξ.

A state ρ on a JW-algebra or von Neumann algebra M is said to be a Jauch–Piron state if whenever e and f are projections in M with ρ(e) = ρ(f) = 0 then ρ(e ∨ f) = 0.

In [W] J. H. C. Whitehead posed the following question: ‘Is every subcomplex K of a 2-dimensional aspherical complex L itself aspherical ?’

This problem is usually referred to as the ‘Whitehead Conjecture’ though it was only stated in the form of a question. For convenience we treat it also as a conjecture.

The Whitehead Conjecture has been proved in special cases: if the subcomplex K has only one 2-cell, and also in the case where π1(K) is either finite, abelian, of free [C] For more partial results see, for example, the introduction of [H1].

We give an example of a univalent orientation-preserving harmonic mapping f = h + g¯ defined on the unit disc U which is real on the real axis, satisfies and is not typically real. Furthermore, we give a geometric characterization for univalent, harmonic and typically real mappings.

We show that if E is an analytic subset of ℝn then

for almost all m–dimensional subspaces V of ℝn, where projvE is the orthogonal projection of E onto V and dimp denotes packing dimension. The same inequality holds for lower and upper box counting dimensions, and these inequalities are the best possible ones.

Essential laminations in 3-manifolds, introduced in [GO], are a natural generalization of both incompressible surfaces and foliations without Reeb components. One of the main reasons why essential laminations are of particular interest is that many manifolds which contain no incompressible surfaces contain essential laminations. Indeed, there is some evidence that almost all irreducible manifolds with infinite fundamental group contain essential laminations [B1; D; GM; GO; H; N; R], the only known exceptions being Seifert manifolds [B2]. So essential laminations are potentially a quite powerful tool for studying non-Haken 3-manifolds.

Our main result can be stated as follows:

Let G be a matrix function of type m × n and suppose that G is expressible as the sum of an H∞ function and a continuous function on the unit circle. Suppose also that the (k – 1)th singular value of the Hankel operator with symbol G is greater than the kth singular value. Then there is a unique superoptimal approximant to G in : that is, there is a unique matrix function Q having at most k poles in the open unit disc which minimizes s∞(G – Q) or, in other words, which minimizes the sequence

with respect to the lexicographic ordering, where

and Sj(·) denotes the jth singular value of a matrix. This result is due to the present authors [PY1] in the case k = 0 (when the hypothesis on the Hankel singular values is vacuous) and to S. Treil[T2] in general. In this paper we give a proof of uniqueness by a diagonalization argument, a high level algorithm for the computation of the superoptimal approximant and a recursive parametrization of the set of all optimal solutions of a matrix Nehari—Takagi problem.

An ideal I in a C*-algebra A is called primal if whenever n ≥ 2 and J1,…, Jn are ideals in A with zero product then Jk ⊆ I for at least one k. The topologized space of minimal primal ideals of A, Min-Primal (A), has been extensively studied by Archbold[3]. Very much in the spirit of Fell's work [14] it was shown in [3, theorem 5·3] (see also [5, theorem 3·4]) that if A is quasi-standard, then A is *-isomorphic to a maximal full algebra of cross-sections of Min-Primal (A). Moreover, if A is separable the fibre algebras are primitive throughout a dense subset. On the other hand, the complete regularization of the primitive ideal space of A gives rise to the space of so-called Glimm ideals of A, Glimm (A). It turned out that A is quasi-standard exactly when Min-Primal (A) and Glimm (A) coincide as sets and topologically [5, theorem 3·3].

Let X be an SQp-space, i.e. a quotient of a subspace of some Lp-space. Let B ⊂ B(X) be a subalgebra of all bounded operators on X and let I ⊂ B be a closed ideal. We show that the quotient algebra B/I is isometrically homomorphic to a subalgebra of B(Y) for some SQp-space Y. This generalizes a theorem of Bernard and Cole, corresponding to p = 2, which states that any quotient of an operator algebra is an operator algebra.

Let (fn) and (gn) be two sequences of random variables adapted to an increasing sequence of σ-algebras (ℱn) such that the conditional distributions of fn and gn given ℱn coincide. Suppose further that the sequence (gn) is conditionally independent. Then it is known that where the number C is a universal constant. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to certain classes of Orlicz and rearrangement invariant spaces. This paper includes fairly general techniques for obtaining rearrangement invariant inequalities from Orlicz norm inequalities.

There is an open-book decomposition of the 3-sphere which has open discs as pages and an unknotted circle as the binding. We can think of the 3-sphere as ℝ3 ∪ {∞} and of the circle as the z–axis ∪ {∞}. The pages are then half-planes Hθ at angle θ when the x–y plane has polar coordinates. In their investigation of the braid index of satellite links, Birman and Menasco [B–M] embed the companion knot in finitely many such half-planes so that the knot meets each half-plane in a single simple arc, and therefore meets the axis in a finite number of points. At the end of their paper they mention that the minimum number of planes required to present a given knot in this manner is a knot invariant and that it seems to have escaped attention. (Jósef Przytycki has since pointed out to us that the phenomenon is evident in a one-hundred-year-old paper by H. Brunn[Br].) We call this invariant the arc index of a link and denote it by α(L).

Let f be a transcendental entire function such that the finite singularities of f−1 lie in a bounded set. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of such a function is strictly greater than one.

We show that for a probability measure μ on ℝn

for almost all m–dimensional subspaces V, provided dimH μ≤m. Here projv denotes orthogonal projection onto V, and dimH and dimp denote the Hausdorff and packing dimension of a measure.
