We consider the ground state of a system of three interacting particles of equal mass. An integro-differential equation is obtained for the optimum pair function f in the product wavefunction Ψ(123) = f(12)f(13)f(23). The solution for harmonic forces reproduces the known exact ground state. Approximate analytic solutions are obtained for inverse-square forces, and for a general force law in the semiclassical limit.

Following an example discovered by John Berge [2], we show that there is a 4-component link L ⊂ (S1 × S2)#(S1 × S2) so that, generically, the result of Dehn surgery on L is a 3-manifold with two inequivalent genus 2 Heegaard splittings, and each of these Heegaard splittings is of Hempel distance 3.

Let p be an odd prime, and h*( − ) a multiplicative mod p cohomology theory with a complex orientation satisfying the 2(p − 1)-sparseness condition. A formula concerning the formal group law for such h*( − ) is used to investigate the structure of h*(BG), G being a finite group whose p-Sylow subgroups are cyclic.

The importance of experimental investigation of the intensity of scattering of X-rays by crystals has long been realized, since it affords valuable information regarding the charge distribution in the atoms of the crystal. Recently Debye has pointed out the importance of similar investigations of the scattering by gases. Here diffraction effects may be observed due to regularities in the structure of the gas molecules as distinct from crystal diffraction, where the regularities are due to the orderly arrangement of crystal atoms. This provides a means of obtaining important information as to the structure of molecules, and Debye and his collaborators have obtained interesting experimental results in this field. Debye has also introduced an approximate theory of the results obtained, but owing to the great complexity of the molecules considered it is at present impossible to proceed any further in the theoretical discussion. However, the case of molecular hydrogen may be worked out for short X-rays, since the charge distribution in the ground state of the molecule is fairly well known. It is the purpose of this paper to calculate the intensities of short X-rays scattered from hydrogen gas. The case of other diatomic molecules will not be very dissimilar.

We show that a torus knot which is not 2-bridge has a unique irreducible bridge splitting of positive genus.

In this paper, we use categorical methods to arrive at a characterization of Hausdorff hyperspaces of separated uniform spaces within a category of ordered uniform spaces. We begin by showing that the hyperspace construction gives rise to a monad H in the category Uni of non-empty separated uniform spaces and uniformly continuous maps. We then identify the category of H-algebras and characterize hyperspaces in this context.

In this paper upper bounds on the Engel length of a group G of prime-power exponent are obtained, under varying conditions on a normal subgroup H and the quotient G/H. Examples are constructed to show that the bounds are best possible when the nilpotency class of H is less than the relevant prime.

We obtain upper and lower bounds of the same order of magnitude for the error between the distribution of a sum of independent and identically distributed random variables, and a normal approximation by a portion of a Chebychev-Cramér series. Our results are sufficiently general to contain the familiar characterizations by Ibragimov(4), Heyde and Leslie (3) and Lifshits(5), and complement some of those obtained earlier by the author (2).

We give a new proof of Dehn's lemma and the loop theorem. This is a fundamental tool in the topology of 3-manifolds. Dehn's lemma was originally formulated by Dehn, where an incorrect proof was given. A proof was finally given by Papakyriakopolous in his famous 1957 paper where the fundamental idea of towers of coverings was introduced. This was later extended to the loop theorem, and the version used most frequently was given by Stallings.

We have shown that hierarchies for Haken 3-manifolds could be understood by a ‘local version’ of Dehn's lemma and the loop theorem. Developing the idea further enables us here to give a new proof of the classical theorems of Papakyriakopoulos, which do not use towers of coverings. A similar result was obtained by Johannson, with the added assumption that the 3-manifold in question was Haken. Our approach means that no extra hypotheses are necessary. Our method uses the concept of boundary patterns of hierarchies, as developed by Johannson. Marc Lackenby has independently produced a very similar proof in his lecture notes.

Note that the more difficult sphere theorem [4, 10, 25] can then be deduced using Dehn's lemma and the loop theorem, plus the PL theory of minimal surfaces. Other applications, like the important result that a covering of an irreducible 3-manifold is irreducible, then follow also by PL minimal surface theory.

A function f:X → ℝ is countably decomposable (into continuous functions) if the topological space X can be partitioned into countably many sets An with each restriction f│ An continuous. According to L. V. Keldysh(2), the question whether every Baire function is countably decomposable was first raised by N. N. Luzin, and answered by P. S. Novikov. The answer is negative even for Baire-1 functions, as is shown in (2) (see also (1). In this paper we develop a characterization of the countably decomposable functions on a separable metric space X (see Corollary 1). We deduce that when X is complete they include all functions possessing the property P defined by D. E. Peek in (3): each non-empty σ-perfect set H contains a point at which f│ H is continuous. The example given by Peek shows that not every countably decomposable Baire-1 function has property P.

1. Given a sequence an of positive integers, one expects to obtain information on the distribution of these numbers by examining the Dirichlet series

In this paper we are going to show how such a series arises from Fröhlich's Galoismodule theory and the use the Thue–Siegel–Roth–Schmidt Theorem as one of the tools in the study of its singularities.

Throughout this paper, G will denote a locally compact, non-discrete, Abelian group (subjected to various conditions) and X wi11 denote the character group of G. All terminology and notation are as in (7). The measure algebra M(G), as is known, is a very complicated entity. We address ourselves here to some novel peculiarities of the subspace Ms(G) of continuous measures in M(G) that are singular with respect to Haar measure λ.

Integral transformations analogous to the Nörlund means have been introduced and investigated by Kuttner, Knopp and Vanderburg(6), (5), (4). It is known that with any regular Nörlund mean (N, p) there is associated a function

regular for |z| < 1, and if we have two Nörlund means (N, p) and (N, r), where (N, pr is regular, while the function is regular for |z| ≤ 1 and different) from zero at z = 1, then q(z) = r(z)p(z) belongs to a regular Nörlund mean (N, q). Concerning Nörlund means Peyerimhoff(7) and Miesner (3) have recently obtained the relation between the convergence fields of the Nörlund means (N, p) and (N, r) on the one hand and the convergence field of the Nörlund mean (N, q) on the other hand.

1. In the paper [Kai] it was observed that if A is a Banach algebra (over R or C) then the dual space is not only an A-A-bimodule, but is also injective as a left (or right) A-module. Furthermore, if M is a left (or right) Banach module over the unital Banach algebra A, then there is a natural bilinear map, there denoted TrA, from M × M′ to A′, defined by

The map TrA can be extended to the projective tensor product M[otimesas]M′, which is also an A–A–bimodule.It is easy to see that the map TrA is a bimodule homomorphism, so that the image is an A–A–submodule of A′. This module was denoted EA (M) in [Kai] and is in general not closed as a subspace of M′. It does, however, have a natural norm (as a quotient space of M[otimesas]M′) and the unit ball can be used to define a new norm ∥a∥new = sup {|〈e, a〉 | e∈ the unit ball of EA(M)} on A, and it is easy to see that this new norm is simply the operator norm of a as an operator on M. The conclusion is that if a′∈A′ is not only continuous with respect to the norm ∥a∥L(M) (which is of course in general smaller thatn the given norm on A) but also with respect to the weak topology on A given by the set of all functionals of the form (0·1), then a′ has a representation of the form

In this paper we study the images of the Johnson homomorphisms of the basis-conjugating automorphism groups of free groups and free metabelian groups. In particular, we show that the Johnson image is contained in a certain proper Lie subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}$Mn of the derivation algebra of the Chen Lie algebra. Furthermore, we completely determine the Johnson images, and give the abelianisation of $\mathfrak{p}$Mn as a Lie algebra by using Morita's trace maps.

The following matrix problems are well known in quantum mechanics:

1. A few months ago, in the course of teaching an elementary class. I had occasion to discuss problems of the familiar type, ‘if α, β, γ are the roots of the equation x3 + qx + r = 0, form the equation whose roots are α2 + βγ, β2 + γα, γ2 + αβ'. After I had explained the device of replacing βγ by αβγ/α = −r/α, so that the roots of the new equation are the same rational function of the separate roots of the original equation, I was asked ‘whether such a transformation was always possible’. On investigation the answer to the question proved to be a surprising one.

The topological theory of covering spaces may be used to prove results in group theory, for instance, the Kuros-Reidemeister-Schreier theorem (1). It seems likely that such methods can be applied to prove the Freiheitsatz (4) and the identity theorem (3), and also perhaps Lyndon's conjecture, that the normal closure in a free group F of a, single element r is freely generated by conjugates of r. However, although these problems may easily be stated in topological terms, no such proof is at present known. In this paper we prove a related result.
