Let G be a finite and u(G) the group of all invertible transformations (polynomial permutations) of the form x→a1 x1→ xk a2⃛ar xkr ar+1 (aiε G, x runs through G). Continuing investigations of H. Lausch of groups satisfying u(G) = {X→axk b} we show here that this condition implies that G is the direct product of its {2, 3}-Hall subgroup and its {2, 3}′-Hall subgroup H where H is nilpoint of class ≤2. Essentially all non-nilpoint groups G of order 2m 3n are described having the property u(G)= {x→axk b}

Let λj (1 ≦ j ≦ 4) be any nonzero real numbers which are not all of the same sign and not all in rational ratio and let pj be polynomials of degree one or two with integer coefficients and positive leading coefficients. The author proves that if exactly two pj are of degree two then for any real n there are infinitely many solutions in primes pj of the inequality . where 0 <β < (√(21)–1)∖5760.

A ring R is called an l-ring (r-ring) in case R contains an indentity and every left (right) semigroup ideal is a left (right) ring ideal. A number of structure theorems are obtained for l-rings when R is left noetherian and left artinian. It is shown that left noetherian l-rings are local left principal ideal rings. When R is a finite dimensional algebra over a field, the property of being an l-ring is equivalent to being an r-ring. However, examples are given to show that these two concepts are in general not equivalent even in the artinian case.

Let R be a commutative ring with identity. R[[x]] denotes the ring of formal power series, in which we consider the composition ○, defined by f(x)○g(x)=f(g(x)). This operation is well defined in the subring R+[[x]] of formal power series of positive order. The algebra= 〈R+[[x]], ○〉 is learly a semigroup, which is not commutative for ∣R∣>1. In this paper we consider all those commutative subsemigroups of , which consist of power series of all positive orders, which are called ‘permutable chains’.

Richmond and Szekeres (1977) have conjecturned that certain of the coefficients in the power series expansions of certain infinite products vanish. In this paper, we prove a general family of results of this nature which includes the above conjectures.

The Moore-Penrose inverse of a general bordered matrix is found under various conditions. The Moore-Penrose inverses obtained by Hall and Hartwig (1976) are shown to be special cases of these more general results.

We consider some unconventional partition problems in which the parts of the partition are restricted by divisibility conditions, for example, partitions n = a1+…+ak into positive integers a1, …, ak such that a1 ∣ a2 ∣ … ∣ ak. Some rather weak estimates for the various partition functions are obtained.

For any group S let Ab(S) = {A∣A is an abelian subgroup of S of maximal order}. Let G be a Chevalley group of type An, Bn, Cn, or Dn over a finite field of characteristic p and let. In this paper Ab(U) is determined for all such groups.

In addition to the results of the paper (Bachturin (1974)) we give the precise form of the necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring that all irreducible representations of a Lie algebra were of finite bounded degree.

The notion of duality of functors is used to study and characterize spaces satisfying the Radon-Nikodym property. A theorem of equivalences concerning the Radon-Nikodym property is proved by categorical means; the classical Dunford-Pettis theorem is then deduced using an adjointness argument. The functorial properties of integral operators, compact operators, and weakly compact operators are discussed. It is shown that as an instance of Kan extension the weakly compact operators can be expressed as a certain direct limit of ordinary hom functors. Characterizations of spaces satisfying the Radon-Nikodym property are then given in terms of the agreement of dual functors of the functors mentioned above.

The coproduct of a family of Kleene algebras is determined firstly by describing the maximal homomorphic image of a De Morgan algebra in the subvariety of Kleene algebras and, secondly, by characterizing the categorical product in the dual category of Kleene spaces.

The structure of a 0-Hecke algebra H of type (W, R) over a field is examined. H has 2n distinct irreducible representations, where n = ∣R∣, all of which are one-dimensional, and correspond in a natural way with subsets of R. H can be written as a direct sum of 2n indecomposable left ideals, in a similar way to Solomon's (1968) decomposition of the underlying Coxeter group W.

Salem and Zygmund (1947, 1948), Baker (1972) and Dudley (1975) have shown that certain lacunary sets P of characters of a compact abelian group have sequences of the form where фk∈P converge to the normal distribution if suitably normalized. In this paper, a theorem of probability due to McLeish (1974) is applied to clarify and extend the previous results.

In this paper we generalize a recent result of Freedman (1973) concerning the cardinality of the type set of a rank two torsion-free abelian group. We show that if A is such a group and A supports a non-trivial associative ring then the type set of A contains at most three elements.

The free product of two Hopfian groups (in the category of groups) need not be Hopfian. We prove, by elementary methods, that the free product of two simple Hopfian inverse semigroups is Hopfian. In particular the free product of any two Hopfian groups, in the category of inverse semigroups, is again Hopfian. In fact the same is true in the category of all semigroups.

We present a new class of topological spaces called SL-spaces, on which every Borel measure has a Lindelöf support. The class contains all metacompact spaces. However, a θ-refinable space is not necessarily an SL-space.

Properties of the funnel boundary are investigated for multivalued dynamical systems defined axiomatically in terms of attainability set mappings on complete, locally compact metric state spaces. The set of regular boundary events is shown to be dense in the funnel boundary and theorems of Fukuhara and Zaremba on peripheral attainability are generalized to the systems considered here.
