A reactive direct current magnetron sputtering system was used to prepare NbAlN coatings at different nitrogen flow rates and substrate bias voltages. Various properties of NbAlN coatings were studied using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nanoindentation, the four-probe method, a solar spectrum reflectometer and emissometer, spectroscopic ellipsometry, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Single-phase NbAlN with B1 NaCl structure was obtained for the coatings prepared at a nitrogen flow rate in the range of 1.5–3 sccm, a substrate bias voltage of −50 to −210 V, and a substrate temperature of 300 °C. Nanoindentation data showed that the optimized NbAlN coating exhibited a maximum hardness of 2856 kg/mm2. An approximately 100-nm-thick NbAlN–NbAlON tandem on copper substrate exhibited a high absorptance (0.93) and a low emittance (0.06), suitable for solar-selective applications. The spectroscopic ellipsometry and resistivity data established the metallic nature of NbAlN and the semitransparent behavior of NbAlON coatings. The corrosion resistance of NbAlN coatings was superior to that of the mild steel substrate. The addition of aluminum in NbN coatings increased the onset of oxidation in air from 350 to 700 °C. Vacuum-annealed NbAlN coatings were structurally stable up to 700 °C and retained their high hardness up to a temperature of 650 °C.

This work reports on thermal and electrical conductivities and interface resistances for transport along aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) films grown on a nickel superalloy (Inconel) substrate. The measured specific thermal resistance of the combined Inconel–CNT and indium–CNT interfaces is of the same order as reported for CNT and silicon or SiO2 interfaces but much higher than theoretical predictions considering perfect contact between the tubes and substrate. Imperfect mechanical contact with the substrate and a large contribution caused by indium–CNT interface are thought to be mainly responsible for the high interface resistances and the low effective values of thermal and electrical conductivities. However, reported results represent an incentive for further research on CNT synthesis on metallic substrates for thermal management applications and pave the way for much easier integration of carbon nanotubes in electronic applications.

A series of Ti–Cx–Ny thin films with solid-solution and nanocomposite structures were deposited at 500 °C by reactive, unbalanced, direct-current magnetron sputtering. These films were subsequently vacuum annealed at 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 °C for 1 h. The effect of C content on the thermal stability of Ti–Cx–Ny thin films was investigated by way of studying the nanostructure and mechanical behaviors of pre- and postannealed samples using x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and microindentation measurements. The result indicated that C content played a great role in the nanostructure of Ti–Cx–Ny thin films. A small amount of C fully dissolved in the TiN lattice and produced SS Ti(N,C) thin films. Nanocomposite nanocrystalline (nc)-Ti(N,C)/amorphous-(C, CNx) thin films were followed to be formed with the incorporation of more C. On the other hand, the addition of C had a positive effect on the structural stability of Ti–Cx–Ny thin films. This effect was further enhanced after the formation of a nanocomposite structure. However, neither C content nor film structure had an effect on the thermal stability of mechanical behaviors. Both microhardness and residual stress were successively decreased with temperature and did not show any temperature retardation. The decrease in hardness values was found to be attributed to a decrease of residual compressive stress because of defect annihilation and an increase in nc size.

ZrC-based composites were produced by pressureless sintering thanks to the addition of MoSi2 as sintering aid. After preliminary tests, a baseline ZrC material and two mixed ZrC–HfC and ZrC–ZrB2 composites with 20 vol% MoSi2 were densified at 1900 to 1950 °C reaching final relative densities of 96%–98%. Mean particle size of the dense bodies ranged from 5 to 9 μm. Secondary phases were found to form during sintering, such as SiC and Zr–Mo–Si-based compounds. Room-temperature mechanical properties were in the range of the values reported in the literature for similar materials densified by pressure-assisted techniques. The flexural strength was tested at room temperature, 1200 and 1500 °C.

Single-crystal SnO2 nanofibers have been formed from SnO2 polycrystals via reaction at low oxygen partial pressures. Polycrystalline SnO2 disks coated with Au nanoparticles were exposed to humid H2/N2 at 700 to 800 °C. Single-crystal SnO2 nanofibers formed beneath Au nanoparticles, with the nanofiber length oriented parallel to the [100] crystallographic direction of SnO2. Because this simple process does not require either a separate source of a Sn–O-bearing vapor species located upstream of the substrate or a temperature gradient, single-crystal nanofibers may be formed on large area SnO2-bearing substrates.

First-principles total-energy and heat of formation calculations on α and β polymorphs of Ta4AlC3 have been made with a full-potential electronic structure program with the generalized gradient approximation, which shows that α phase is more stable than β phase. The charge transfer and chemical bonding of the two phases were investigated quantitatively by using Bader’s quantum theory of atoms in molecules (AIM). The results show that the bonding between Ta1-C2 is stronger in α phase than β phase, which leads to the stability of α phase.

Thermoreversibly gelling block copolymers conjugated to hydroxyapatite-nucleating peptides were used to template the growth of inorganic calcium phosphate in aqueous solutions. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and small-angle scattering were used to characterize these samples and confirm that the peptides promoted the growth of hydroxyapatite as the inorganic phase. Three different polymer templates were used with varying charges on the polymer chains (nonionic, anionic, and zwitterionic), to investigate the role of charge on mineralization. All of the polymer-inorganic solutions exhibited thermoreversible gelation above room temperature. Nanocomposite formation was confirmed by solid-state NMR, and several methods identified the inorganic component as hydroxyapatite. Small angle x-ray scattering and electron microscopy showed thin, elongated crystallites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed an inorganic content of 30–45 wt% (based on the mass of the dried gel at ∼200 °C) in the various samples. Our work offers routes for bioinspired bottom-up approaches for the development of novel, self-assembling, injectable nanocomposite biomaterials for potential orthopedic applications.

Different bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were prepared in ductile Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5, Zr62Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10, and brittle Zr55Ni5Al10Cu30 alloys by controlling solidification conditions. The achieved microstructures were characterized by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, and synchrotron- based high-energy x-ray diffraction. Monolithic BMGs obtained by high-temperature injection casting are brittle, while BMGs bearing some nanocrystals with the size of 3 to 7 nm and 2 to 4 nm, obtained by low-temperature injection casting and in situ suction casting, respectively, exhibit good plasticity. It indicates that the microstructures of BMGs are closely affected by the solidification conditions. Controlling the solidification conditions could improve the plasticity of BMGs.

The mechanical properties and corresponding microstructure development of the AZ31 Mg alloy after treatment with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and subsequent electropulsing (ECP) was investigated. Comparing the ECAP+ECP-treated AZ31 alloy with the ECAP-treated alloy, the elongation to failure was improved significantly, while the yield stress and the ultimate tensile strength were not decreased, the grain sizes were slightly increased and more homogeneous, and the texture was barely changed. The main mechanism for the evolution of the structures and properties might be ascribed to the increased nucleation rate on recrystallization and the decreased dislocation density during the ECP treatment. It was reasonable to expect that the ECAP+ECP treatment would provide a promising approach for enhancing the mechanical properties of the Mg alloys.

In this paper, YNbO4:0.05Tb3+ and GdTaO4:0.05Eu3+ phosphors were chosen to study the influence of the firing temperature on the phase and morphologies using novel modified in situ chemical coprecipitation technology. Results show that until the temperature reaches 1000 °C, the formation of YNbO4 and GdTaO4 were realized; with the increasing firing temperatures, those samples present better crystalline structure and better morphologies. The luminescent properties of Eu3+ and Tb3+ have shown that after calcinations at 1000 °C, the intensity of Eu3+ and Tb3+ increases strongly with the increasing of the calcinations temperature, while remaining relatively unchanged at the temperatures ranging between 600 and 800 °C. Furthermore, other rare earth ion doped GdTaO4 and Y1−xGdxTaO4:5 mol% Eu3+ with the different yttrium content were also synthesized after calcinating at the preferable temperature using the same method. The photoluminescence of Y1−xGdxTaO4:5 mol% Eu3+ revealed that the red emission intensity of Eu3+ increases with the increasing of gadolinium content, indicating that Gd ion plays an important role in the energy transfer process. Also, the concentration quenching has been studied in the GdTaO4:Eu3+/Dy3+ systems. Moreover, the characteristic emission lines of Tb3+, Pr3+, and Er3+ in GdTaO4 were observed, showing that the energy transfer process appears between host and those activators.

In this study, the mechanical properties and creep behavior of hybrid sol-gel silica-based coatings on copper substrates were investigated. Sol-gel processing was used to synthesize the organically modified silanes using mixtures of tetraethoxysilane and vinyltrimethoxysilane or glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane precursors. The mechanical and creep properties of the coatings were assessed using nanoindentation. The link between film structure and creep behavior from nanoindentation experiments was examined, and simple mechanical models were used to extract Young’s modulus and viscosity from fits to creep data. It is shown that the creep response of the coatings was influenced dramatically by the chain length and amount of organic substituent.

We previously proposed a method for estimating Young’s modulus from instrumented nanoindentation data based on a model assuming that the indenter had a spherical-capped Berkovich geometry to take account of the bluntness effect. The method is now further improved by releasing the constraint on the tip shape, allowing it to have a much broader arbitrariness to range from a conical-tipped shape to a flat-ended shape, whereas the spherical-capped shape is just a special case in between. This method requires two parameters to specify a tip geometry, namely, a volume bluntness ratio Vr and a height bluntness ratio hr. A set of functional relationships correlating nominal hardness/reduced elastic modulus ratio (Hn/Er) and elastic work/total work ratio (We/W) were established based on dimensional analysis and finite element simulations, with each relationship specified by a set of Vr and hr. Young’s modulus of an indented material can be estimated from these relationships. The method was shown to be valid when applied to S45C carbon steel and 6061 aluminum alloy.

In this paper, we report on the multicolor luminescence in oxygen-deficient Tb3+-doped calcium aluminogermanate glasses. A simple method was proposed to control oxygen-deficient defects in glasses by adding metal Al instead of the corresponding oxide (Al2O3), resulting in efficient blue and red emissions from Tb3+-undoped glasses with 300 and 380 nm excitation wavelengths, respectively. Moreover, in Tb3+-doped oxygen-deficient glasses, bright three-color (sky-blue, green or yellow, and red) luminescence was observed with 300, 380, and 395 nm excitation wavelengths, respectively. These glasses are useful for the fabrication of white light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.

The mechanical performance of nacre in seashells is generally described in terms of mesoscale mechanisms between mineral plates within the organic polymer matrix. However, recent work has reported nanostructures and organic material within individual plates and associated deformation mechanisms. In this work, we further investigated the nanoscale structure and mechanical behavior within individual plates of nacre by using two methods to induce fracture of plates: microindentation with focused ion beam preparation and ultramicrotomy. Using transmission electron microscopy, we observed deformation nanostructures and organic matrix within plates and identified nanoscale mechanisms, such as separation, shear, and matrix crack bridging.

The isothermal oxidation behavior of Zr2Al3C4 in the temperature range of 500 to 1000 °C for 20 h in air has been investigated. The oxidation kinetics follow a parabolic law at 600 to 800 °C and a linear law at higher temperatures. The activation energy is determined to be 167.4 and 201.2 kJ/mol at parabolic and linear stages, respectively. The oxide scales have a monolayer structure, which is a mixture of ZrO2 and Al2O3. As indicated by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectra, the scales formed at 500 to 700 °C are amorphous, and at higher temperatures are α-Al2O3 and t-ZrO2 nanocrystallites. The nonselective oxidation of Zr2Al3C4 can be attributed to the strong coupling between Al3C2 units and ZrC blocks in its structure, and the close oxygen affinity of Zr and Al.

Although the driving force for the growth of Sn whiskers from the surface of Sn coatings on copper is thought to be internally generated stress due to the formation of Cu6Sn5 at the Cu/Sn interface, little is known about the nature of this internal stress and how it cracks the surface Sn oxide (an important precursor to whisker formation). Arguments based on elasticity alone do not appear to be sufficient and suggest an important role for plastic deformation. Direct observations, made by transmission electron microscopy of cross-sectioned bimetallic Cu/Sn thin-film specimens, confirm plastic deformation of the Sn grains due to the formation of Cu6Sn5. Dislocation motion and pile-up at the surface Sn oxide, rotation associated with subgrain boundary formation, interaction of the subgrain boundaries with the Sn surface, and diffusional processes are various mechanisms that can produce stress at the Sn surface and crack the Sn oxide.

A crystalline silicon surface, loaded by a Berkovich indenter to a constant maximum load, was unloaded using three unload functions, each consisting of five linear segments of equal time period. The first function had an exponentially decaying unload rate and was found to promote a pop-out event more readily than the second function, having a linear unload rate, or the third case with its unload rate increasing with time. Statistical analyses of experimental data suggest that the unload rate within 20%–30% of the maximum load, when the mean contact pressure in the indent volume is roughly 5 to 6 GPa, is the most dominant factor influencing the probabilistic occurrence of a pop-out event. Unload rates at higher load levels were shown to have a much less significant effect on the probability of pop-out occurrence.

Mg–8Gd–2Y–Nd–0.3Zn (wt%) alloy was prepared by the high pressure die-cast technique. The microstructure, mechanical properties in the temperature range from room temperature to 573 K, and strengthening mechanism were investigated. It was confirmed that the Mg–Gd-based alloy with high Gd content exhibited outstanding die-cast character. The die-cast alloy was mainly composed of small cellular equiaxed dendrites and the matrix. The long lamellar-shaped stacking compound of Mg3X (X: Gd, Y, Nd, and Zn) and polygon-shaped precipitate of Mg5RE (RE: Gd, Y, and Nd) were mainly concentrated along the dendrite boundaries. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated that the Zn addition affects the formation of non-equilibrium precipitate Mg3X. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and Young’s modulus were 302 MPa, 267 MPa, and 38 GPa at room temperature, respectively. The outstanding mechanical properties were mainly attributed to the small dendrite spacing, wide skin region, and some dispersed precipitates in the alloy formed by the high-pressure die-cast technique. Designing a novel die-cast Mg alloy with good heat resistance without Al element is a significant accomplishment.

Instead of conventional grain-refinement treatments for improving the ductility of fully lamellar TiAl alloys, multiorientational, lamellar, subcolony refinement with good ductility has been achieved simply by using an electric-current pulse treatment. The microstructural refinement mechanism is attributed to the transformation on heating of γ laths in the prior large-grain lamellar structure to Widmanstätten α in several orientations, which on subsequent cooling forms lamellar structure colonies in multiple orientations. This kind of refined multiple-colony lamellar structure was found to enhance the ductility of the TiAl alloy.

In this study, we report the growth of metallic tungsten nanowires induced by alloy catalysts (Fe–Ni) at a temperature of 850 °C. The synthesized tungsten nanowires have bottom diameters of 100 to 400 nm and tip diameters of <80 nm, and show a well-defined single-crystalline structure. The formation of the (Fe,Ni)-catalyzed W nanowires should be controlled by the vapor–solid–solid mechanism, rather than the traditional vapor–liquid–solid mechanism, because the growth temperature is significantly below the lowest eutectic temperature (1455 °C) of the Fe–Ni–W ternary system. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of synthesizing metallic nanowires via metal-catalyzed methods, which may be extended to the synthesis of some other metallic nanowires.
