In the extensive literature devoted to this worm axe many anatomical descriptions, the earlier of which are, according to modern standards, vague and superficial. But among recent authors de Man (1910) has given a full and illustrated account with detailed measurements of some forty specimens, an account to which it might seem difficult to add anything of importance. However, the present writer is preparing a paper on the bionomics of the worm, and therefore considers a brief anatomical description to be desirable, particularly as de Man's paper may not be easily accessible to those interested

In an in vitro trial, the trapping ability of Arthrobotrys robusta and Monacrosporium gephyropagum against Strongyloides papillosus infective larvae on corn meal agar plates, was evaluated after seven days of interaction at 25°C. Monacrosporium gephyropagum trapped 93.1% of the larvae whereas A. robusta trapped only 32.3%. Variability in the capture of S. papillosus infective larvae by both trapping fungi is discussed.

Old lambs (8 months of age) infected with 50,000 L3 of Nematodirus battus had larvae developing normally in their tissues on day 4 post-infection (P.I.), but by day 8 P.I. there were only 4105 ± 1044 worms left in the alimentary tract. Some of these worms contained crystals in their intestine. Eight-month-old lambs treated with dexamethasone and infected with 50,000 L3 of N. battus contained a mean worm burden of 7878 ± 1262 on 18 days P.I. Untreated 8-month-old lambs similarly infected were virtually worm free by day 18 P.I. Peripheral eosinophilia became elevated in the untreated lambs over the course of infection and, at post-mortem, the tissue mast cell and eosinophil counts were much higher than in the dexamethasone treated group. Although the phenomenon of age resistance is thought to have a strong immunological component, there may also be other physiological factors, resulting in fewer nematodes and lower fecundity of the worms.

Since Looss described in detail the anatomy and histology of the type species of the family Ancylostomida no attempt has been made to study comparatively any of the other genera of this group.

From its economic importance as a little-known, though frequent, parasite of ruminants and its scientific importance as type species of the second sub-family of the AncylostomidcB, Monodontus trigonocephalus has been selected for description.

The life cycle of Echinostoma ivaniosi n.sp., found in the rectum of domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) has been worked out in detail. The eggs hatch in 7–8 days in tap water at room temperature (24-28°C). Body of the miracidium covered with 18 epidermal plates arranged in four tiers of 6, 6, 4, 2 from the anterior to the posterior end. Miracidia develop into sporocysts in the snails, Lymnaea luteola f typica. There are two redial generations and the first cercariae are liberated 25–30 days post-infection with miracidia, or a little later. 37 collar spines of the cercaria are arranged in the pattern-5(3+2)+6+15(8+7)+6+5(3+2). Caudal finfold present, cuticle spinose, paraoesophageal gland cells present, penetration glands two pairs and excretory system with 18 pairs of flame cells in triplets. Metacercaria develops into adult in domestic fowl and the eggs are recovered from the faeces of the host, 12–14 days post-infection. The adult is compared with other 37-spined echinostomes whose life cycles are known or which show characteristic differences from the present species and the creation of a new species is justified.

The influence of dietary protein supplementation upon resistance to haemonchosis was examined in Dorsimal (Polled Dorset × Malin) lambs offered two levels of protein. Lambs were offered either a complete basal ruminant diet (15% crude protein (CP)) or the same diet supplemented with fish meal as a source of rumen bypass protein (19% CP). Lambs from each dietary treatment group were given either a 7-week trickle infection with Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3) or remained uninfected. All lambs were drenched with anthelmintic at week 8 post-infection (PI), challenged with a single dose of 5000 H. contortus L3 one week later, and killed 14 days post-challenge (PC). Lambs on the supplemented diet that were trickle infected showed a significant reduction in egg output. Supplementation and previous infection did not affect either growth rate, worm burden, worm development or haematological parameters. There was a trend for enhanced growth among supplemented non-infected lambs in comparison to lambs which received the basal ration.

An analysis of slaughter-house returns, covering over 73,000 cattle slaughtered during three weeks in June, 1942, reveals evidence of heterogeneity and interaction in respect of all the five categories involved: time, area, class, origin and degree of infestation with liver fluke. By heterogeneity is here meant that the differences between the various sub-divisions of any one category are too large to be ascribed to chance; by interaction is meant that the relative proportions between the subdivisions under any one category do not remain steady (within the limits of random variation) over the co-ordinate subdivisions of a second category. This makes the data difficult to interpret clearly.

1. Ignavia venusta de Freitas is recorded from the kidneys of two Fish-eagles (Cuncuma vocifer) and a Goliath heron (Ardea goliath) from the Southern Sudan.

2. Ignavia is regarded as a valid genus and to it is transferred Allechinostomum renale Yeh, 1954.

3. Ignavia inops de Freitas (= Echinostomum sp.inq. Dietz, 1910) probably does not belong to the genus Ignavia or even to the subfamily Echinochasminae.

4. A new species of Renicola is described from the kidney of the Goliath heron and is named R. goliath.

5. The affinities of R. goliath are discussed and R. brantae McIntosh and Farr, 1952 is figured.

6. The significance of the occurrence of these two flukes in the Southern Sudan is discussed.

The new organic arsenical R7/45 is a rapidly acting and very potent anthelmintic against adult Brugia pahangi in jirds. Against adult worms implanted into the peritoneal cavity 5 subcutaneous (SC) injections at 2·5 mg/kg of R7/45 killed 100% of adult worms. A single dose SC of 20 mg/kg was 100% effective and 10 mg/kg 76% effective against adult worms. When jirds were autopsied at different times after treatment at 20 mg/kg SC 89% of worms were dead within three days. R7/45 was not active when given by stomach intubation. Pretreatment of jirds with R7/45 had no effect on adult worms subsequently implanted into jirds. R7/45 was highly active against third and fourth stage larvae of B. pahangi in jirds.

Dermatoxys hispaniensis n.sp., collected from the intestine of hares and wild rabbits is described, and details are given of the cephalic anatomy. As far as our knowledge goes, this is the first record of Dermatoxys in Spain and also in the leporine species of Europe.

A key for identifying the species of Dermatoxys is provided, based on the available data.

We review how constraints on the mating probability of female worms by segregation within individual host guts form a critical element in the parasite population structure of nematodes. We consider the effects of these constraints on the population genetics of nematodes under various assumptions regarding worm competition as reflected in the relationship between the abundance of a certain genotype within the gut and the probability of reproductive success. The consequences for the emergence of resistance to drugs and immunotherapy and implications for host-parasite coevolution are discussed. We also review evidence for genetic heterogeneity in parasite populations as a necessary prerequisite for the applicability of mating probability models designed to assess the population genetics of nematodes.

Parapharyngodon politoedi n. sp. is described here, based on specimens found in the large intestines of Osteocephalus taurinus from the Caxiuanã National Forest, State of Pará, Brazil. The new species is assigned to Parapharyngodon based on the presence of non-embryonated eggs with sub-terminal opercula, when in the ovijector. Parapharyngodon politoedi belongs to a group of species with three pairs of cloacal papillae and differs from its congeners by morphometric aspects, such as the length of the spicule, and the combination of the following morphological characters: ovaries never encircling the oesophagus, tail shape in females, cloacal lips, sharply pointed spicule and presence of genital cone. This is the second species of nematode reported to parasitize O. taurinus and the eleventh species of Parapharyngodon from hylids in the Neotropical region.

We present a time series of 13 years (2003–2016) of continuous monthly data on the prevalence and mean abundance of the trematode Oligogonotylus mayae for all the hosts involved in its life cycle. We aimed to determine whether annual (or longer than annual) environmental fluctuations affect these infection parameters of O. mayae in its intermediate snail host Pyrgophorus coronatus, and its second and definitive fish host Mayaheros urophthalmus from the Celestun tropical coastal lagoon, Yucatan, Mexico. Fourier time series analysis was used to identify infection peaks over time, and cross-correlation among environmental forcings and infection parameters. Our results suggest that the transmission of O. mayae in all its hosts was influenced by the annual patterns of temperature, salinity and rainfall. However, there was a biannual accumulation of metacercarial stages of O. mayae in M. urophthalmus, apparently associated with the temporal range of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (five years) and the recovery of the trematode population after a devasting hurricane. Taking O. mayae as an example of what could be happening to other trematodes, it is becoming clear that environmental forcings acting at long-term temporal scales affect the population dynamics of these parasites.

Polystoma nacialtuneli n. sp. is described from the urinary bladder of the eastern spadefoot, Pelobates syriacus from Turkey. This is the fifth polystome species known from Turkey and the third species in Pelobates. We show that this new parasite species can be distinguished from other polystome species in the area by a combination of characteristics, including parasite size and the shape and size of the hamuli. Polystoma pelobatis from Pelobates cultripes has a pair of well-developed hamuli, while P. fuscus from Pe. fuscus characteristically has a pair of underdeveloped hamuli barely larger than the marginal hooklets. Polystoma nacialtuneli n. sp. has well-developed hamuli that vary significantly in shape. Phylogenetic relationships of P. nacialtuneli n. sp. within Polystoma, supplemented with molecular divergences estimated from internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences, indicate that they are well separated from their closest relatives, i.e. P. fuscus and P. pelobatis from Pe. fuscus and Pe. cultripes, respectively.

The short-term effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) on granulomatous lesions during Schistosoma mansoni infection in Swiss mice were evaluated. Drug administration was initiated 42 and 140 days post-infection (DPI) for the acute and chronic infection groups, respectively. Treatment was carried out daily with 200 mg/kg (subcutaneous route) of the drug for five consecutive days. Recovery of parasites and tissues was performed at 49 DPI and 147 DPI, respectively. Liver histological analysis showed a decrease in the inflammatory reaction and fibrous content of the granulomas studied, and a significant reduction (P < 0.001) in their mean diameter was observed in the groups of rodents treated with PTX in acute and chronic infection, when compared to their respective control groups. However, no alteration in the number of S. mansoni recovered from the portal system was observed, and egg-laying kinetics was not notably modified by PTX treatment, and the immature stage distribution of S. mansoni eggs showed minor intrinsic variations with no statistical differences in the parameter second-stage/female/g among untreated mice and treated mice in acute and chronic infections, respectively, when evaluated by intestinal oograms. Data obtained indicate probable immunomodulatory effects of PTX in murine schistosomiasis both in acute and chronic infection.

Teladorsagia circumcincta is a polygamous nematode that exhibits morphological polymorphism. Sex ratio is typically female biased and the male nematodes occur in association with the genetically similar, minor morphotypes Teladorsagia davtiani and Teladorsagia trifurcata. In experimental infections, sex ratio (proportion male) and the proportion of minor male morphs observed have been shown to be influenced by both host and nematode-related factors. As similar investigations from natural systems are rare, this study examined whether sex ratio and minor male morph frequency were associated with host age and sex and nematode infra-population size in the isolated Soay sheep population on St Kilda. Count data for Teladorsagia were analysed for sheep of all age classes and both sexes from the winters of three consecutive population crashes (1999, 2002 and 2005). Generally, the intensity of Teladorsagia nematodes increased with host age until the age of 2 years before decreasing. In 2005, abundance of nematodes was generally higher than in the previous crashes, nematode sex ratio was negatively associated with host age and tended to be negatively associated with nematode intensity. Within the male nematode subpopulation, T. circumcincta always predominated, followed by T. davtiani and then T. trifurcata, with little variation in the relative proportions between hosts. The presence of each minor morph was primarily associated with the intensity of male T. circumcincta and, in those hosts where all three male morphs were detected, intensity of each minor morph was most associated with intensity of Teladorsagia females. Therefore, in a year when the nematode was generally more abundant, sex ratio appeared to be influenced by both host and nematode-related factors, whereas in all years examined, the frequency of morphological polymorphism was primarily density dependent.

The biogenic elements zinc, manganese and cobalt are essential for metabolic processes in animals. Compounds of nGly.Me2+A. mH2O (Me2+=Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+; A=Cl−, SO42−, n=1, 2; m=2, 5), as supplements in the diet, were used separately on different experimental groups of male Hisex chickens to correct the mineral deficiency caused by Ascaridia galli infections. An amelioration of body weight gain, reduction of mortality and restoration of trace element levels were estimated in infected chickens. A mathematical model has been proposed for A. galli population kinetics in chickens, taking into account the stimulating effect of these elements on the nematodes. The model parameters are considered as phenomenological constants of the host–parasite system. An agreement with experimental data is observed using, for the parameters ψ, α, μ and μs, values equal to those calculated in previously investigated A. galli–chicken systems. For parameter ν (immunological constant) the same value was obtained as in a previous experiment with high infection. This model is likely to be suitable for a range of host–nematode systems, including varying degrees of infection and treatment with different trace elements.

The parasite fauna of young-of-the-year herring Clupea harengus L., off Gullmarsfjord and Brofjorden, west coast of Sweden, was studied between May and October for 4 years, from 1994 to 1997. Fifteen species of parasites were found: two Protozoa – Trichodina sp. and Ceratomyxa auerbachi; one species of uncertain affinity – Ichthyophonus hoferi; two Monogenea – Gyrodactylus harengi and Pseudanthocotyloides heterocotyle; five Digenea – Cryptocotyle lingua metacercariae, Cercaria pythionike metacercariae, Hemiurus luehei, Lecithaster confusus and Pseudobacciger harengulae; three Cestoda plerocercoids – Bothriocephalus sp., an acrobothriid and a tetraphyllid; one Nematoda – Hysterothylacium aduncum larva; and one Copepoda – Caligus elongatus. The number of species found in this study represents more than one-sixth of all parasites reported in herring worldwide and all parasites were acquired locally. The parasite fauna of herring from the west coast of Sweden is compared with that of herring from the Baltic Sea and other areas of the north-east Atlantic. The prevalence and intensity of parasites are presented and discussed. Morphological descriptions are based on both light and scanning electron microscopy and new features are described. Possible applications of this new information about the parasite fauna, in different areas of fisheries and fish biology studies, are discussed.

Adult male worms of Trichobilharzia sp. recovered from a pied wagtail (Motacilla alba) in the Czech Republic were found to belong to a new species of the genus. The finding of Trichobilharzia sp. in a passeriform bird in Europe represents an important discovery, as only anseriform birds have thus far been reported as final hosts of the European Trichobilharzia species.

A new species of the genus Plagiorhynchus Lühe, 1911 from the intestine of the long-billed curlew (Numenius americanus) from northern Mexico is described. Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) aznari n. sp. is morphologically distinguished from other congeneric species from the Americas by having a trunk expanded anteriorly and a cylindrical proboscis, armed with 19 longitudinal rows of hooks, with 14–15 hooks each row. Nearly complete sequences of the small subunit and large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal DNA of the new species were determined and compared with available sequences from GenBank. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from the two molecular markers consistently showed that P. (Plagiorhynchus) aznari n. sp. is closely related to P. (Plagiorhynchus) allisonae, and this clade is sister to a clade formed by P. (Prosthorhynchus) transversus and P. (Prosthorhynchus) cylindraceus from Plagiorhynchidae. The new species represents the second record of the genus in Mexico and the fourth species in the Americas. The phylogenetic relationships among the members of the order Polymorphida in this study provide significant insights into the evolution of ecological associations between parasites and their definitive hosts. Our analyses suggest that the colonization of marine mammals, fish-eating birds and waterfowl in Polymorphidae might have occurred independently, from a common ancestor of Centrorhynchidae and Plagiorhynchidae that colonized terrestrial birds and mammals.
