A series of end moraines, with a remarkable saw-tooth pattern, is reported from the glacier foreland of Bødalsbreen, a northern outlet of the ice cap Jostedalsbreen. The three-dimensional morphology of the moraines is described and analysed. Historical records and lichenometric measurements indicate that they were deposited after the “Little Ice Age” glacier maximum of the mid-eighteenth century. It is inferred that the local topography of Bødalen was conducive to the formation of a heavily crevassed pecten at the snout of Bødalsbreen, which produced the end moraines by a push mechanism during minor glacier advances. The observations suggest that pushing may be an underestimated mechanism in moraine ridge formation generally.

Detailed measurements on several avalanches verify that a Daniels’ (1945) type statistical correction to Roch’s (1966) stability index would accurately predict snow-slope instability. It is recommended that one-half the median of at least 50 shear-strength measurements be used as a measure of the strength of a weak layer.

Total transmission, absorption, and reflection of solar radiation have been determined for bare blue and white ice between 0.02 and 0.8 m in thickness as well as for blue ice covered with 0.01 to 0.4 m of dry packed snow. The calculations were performed at 45 wavelengths between 400 nm and 2150 nm using a two-stream model to account for the finite thickness of the ice and snow layers. Total radiative energies were found by numerical integration over wavelength. The results were compared with corresponding calculations for optically thick ice of the same types. Albedos increase from about 0.05 for open water to a maximum of 0.9 for thick snow. For 0.8 m blue and white ice, predicted albedos on cloudy days are 0.28 and 0.67 respectively. Under clear skies these albedos decrease by 10 to 30%. Total transmission through thin ice (less than 0.8 m) is from 50% to 300% greater than is predicted by Beer’s law depending on ice type and cloud cover. Radiative energy absorption at the surface is independent of thickness, but significant departures from Beer’s law of as much as 200% are evident in all cases below a depth of 2.5 mm. A parameterization scheme is presented for incorporating these results into heat- and mass- balance studies.

Under evaluation is the range of the parameters of internal viscosity and surface friction of flowing avalanches in order to represent the flow numerically by computer program AVALNCH. Nominal values of these parameters are determined to be in the range 0.4 to 0.6 for, snow flowing on snow, with values as high as 0.8 to 0.9 for snow flowing on rough ground. Using a nominal avalanche path, the basic parameters: (1) depth of initial release slab, (2) viscosity and friction, (3) adverse grade, and (4) flow spreading are determined to be in the order listed as regards their relative effect on avalanche runout distance. Program AVALNCH, which permits treatment of flow parameters separately from geometric parameters, provides a versatile tool for the prediction of avalanche runout, as well as for related studies of avalanche dynamics.

Experimental procedure and measured estimates of the tensile strength of snow are given by a new method utilizing large sample sizes of naturally deposited snow. Data are presented as a function of average sample density, temperature, loading rate, and snow type. The results show less scatter in the data than previous in-situ estimates and lower mean strength values as a function of density. The relevance of the data to tensile fracture as observed in slab avalanche release is discussed.

The existing methods of predicting avalanche danger often do not meet users’ demands because of the empiric character of the insufficient volume of information used. In such forecasts the contribution of each individual parameter into the prognostic information is unknown, and this is very important when studying such an event as avalanche formation, which is conditioned by a complex interaction of numerous factors, including snow accumulation, snow thickness, and the conditions of its development. It is obvious that such problems can be successfully solved by statistical methods, and that explains the growing interest in numerical methods of avalanche forecasting. Problems of multi-dimensional observations arises in many scientific fields. The method suited for this problem is discriminant analysis, the purpose of which is to divide a multi-dimensional observation vector into predetermined classes.

This study considers the prognostic (diagnostic) problems of fresh-snow avalanches released during snowfall or in the two days after it has ceased. The theoretical basis is a complex of statistical methods: correlation and dispersion analysis, “sifting” for the choice of predictors’ informative groups, construction of linear parametric discriminant functions, predictions based on training sample, and verification of discriminant functions based on independent material.

The archive used in the study consisted of 500 avalanching cases and 1 300 non-avalanching ones. All situations were grouped according to geomorphological characteristics. Each situation is described by eight meteorological characteristics. The results of classification of snowfall situations into avalanching and non-avalanching ones are as follows: reliability of p is from 75% to 91%, H from 0.15 to 0.51; based on independent material the reliability of p is from 63% to 85%, H from 0. 10 to 0.56.

Measurements of aerial admittance as a function of height above a snow surface show that when the surface temperature is below freezing, the aerial performance is insensitive to slight surface irregularities.

The plane-strain fracture toughness of fresh-water ice was measured at various loading rates and temperatures. The fracture toughness of ice decreases as loading rate increases and as the test temperature approaches the melting point. The presence of liquid water seems to reduce the fracture toughness. The fracture toughness for crack arrest is slightly lower than the static fracture toughness.

Pleistocene ice-sheet temperatures are reconstructed for a west-to-east transect across northern Scotland at the ice maximum using the temperature-profile model of Budd and others (1971[a]). Basal freezing is predicted for the central area of the ice sheet, and zones of basal melting on each side to the west and east. Variations in estimates of annual accumulation rate and ice thickness do not greatly alter this general pattern. However, small errors in estimating mean annual temperature at the ice edge and ice-surface temperature lapse-rate may significantly change the pattern of predicted basal temperature regimes, and basal freezing may have extended over the whole of the area considered. Zones of areal scouring occur in both the west and east of the transect but are absent from the central mountain area. Under some of the temperature conditions modelled there is a partial spatial coincidence of the areal scouring in the west with predicted areas of basal melting, but almost none in the east. Possibly this is explained because glacial erosion relates to time periods other than the ice maximum.

The direction of inland ice movement can, in some cases, be reconstructed by a study of the forms at the base of till strata. These forms are “ribs”, which are formed either as slickensides or as a type of negative “flute”; “edges” and “wedges”, which are caused by shearing movements at the base of the ice; or “undulations”, probably created by restricting movements at the base of the ice. These forms appear to be elongated in the direction of ice movement. As these features can easily be measured, they can be used to check, supplement, or replace the results of till-fabric measurements.

Dispersions of ice microcrystals were obtained from the breakdown of supercooling of water-in-oil type emulsions whose disperse phase was either resin-exchanged water or aqueous solutions of NH4Cl. Their complex permittivity ε⋆ = ε´–jε˝ was studied versus temperature T, up to the melting point of ice microcrystals, by means of an automatically balancing admittance bridge (General Radio 1680 A) working at 400 Hz and 1 kHz, The plots ε´(T), ε˝(T) and ε˝(ε´) reveal that these systems exhibit two distinct dielectric relaxations located on either side of a temperature Tm which was found to be equal to about — 20°C in the case of water and lower than — 20°C in the case of aqueous solutions of NH4Cl. The relaxation located in the lower temperature range arises from the Debye dipolar absorption of ice while the other one could be related to structural changes occurring within the lattice of ice as T approaches its melting point. These results are consistent with those obtained by investigating versus frequency the dielectric behaviour of ice monocrystals at discrete sub-zero temperatures close to their melting point.

Late Wisconsin-age drumlins west of Milwaukee are clustered atop uplands bounded by discrete scarps. Gravel operations within the uplands have exposed drumlin cores of undeformed till and outwash beds which are truncated at the sides of the drumlin. In a few areas, clastic dikes, faults, overturned bedding and shear folds disturb the original layering. The drumlin shapes are blanketed with a basal till 1–3 m thick (“retreat” till) which truncates all internal structures. This till covering cannot be distinguished from the youngest truncated till (“advance” till).

Truncation of all of these structures shows that these drumlins are erosional forms carved from pre-existing drift. Apparently, during erosion under compressive flow, some beds became unstable and initiated large-scale movements of material into the drumlin from beneath the drumlin form. Failure and mobilization of the finer-grained beds may have been due to increased pore pressures, differing stages of dilatancy, or differing bulk densities. A growth relationship for drumlins may exist that is based upon the rates of material moving into the drumlin from below and rates of erosion of the drumlin form.

The heat capacities of quenched and annealed heavy ice Ih were measured in the temperature range 14 to 300 K by an adiabatic calorimeter. A relaxational thermal anomaly was found at around 115K and this phenomenon was ascribed to the onset of deuteron ordering in the crystal. The average activation enthalpy of the relaxational process was determined to be (26±5) kJ mol–1. Residual entropies of the crystal were recalculated on the basis of the present heat-capacity data combined with the revised values for enthalpy of vapourization, saturated vapour pressure, and spectroscopic entropy. They are (3.47±0.41) J K–1 mol–1 for the quenched crystal and (3.44±0.41) J K–1 mol–1 for the crystal annealed at 102–106 K for 264 h. The characteristics and the origin of the anomaly are discussed in comparison with that of ordinary ice.

Two new methods have been devised for measurement of crystallographic lattice orientations of individual crystals in polycrystalline ice. The first uses edge-length ratios of etch pits. The second uses a combination of optical measurement on a thin section and etch-pit technique. Although the second method does not work for crystals with their c-axis oriented parallel to the thin section, it is much simpler and more practical than the first method. When used on polycrystalline glacier ice, this method gave the three a-axes orientations as well as c-axis orientation for each crystal with an accuracy of 5°.

Most drumlins are composed of till that appears similar in all characteristics to non-drumlin till. Evidence, however, in the form of till layer sequences and from palaeomagnetic Koenigsberger ratios indicate that drumlin till may have a slightly higher pore-water content at the time of lodgement than nondrumlin till. In order that deposited till remains at the ice-glacier-bed interface to initiate drumlin formation, it must undergo rapid geotechnical changes whereby its pore-water content is dissipated thereby increasing the shear strength of the till. Two mechanisms of pore-water removal are possible. Firstly, pore water may be removed from localized patches within a mobile layer of till at the ice-glacier-bed interface, thus creating nuclei of higher-strength till around which deforming till may adhere. Secondly, removal of water initially from the thin water film at the base of a glacier may result in increased pressure melting of the ice leading to till melt-out and subsequent loss of pore water from the deposited till. The loss of water at the glacier bed may be either via permeable subglacial deposits or bedrock, or within subglacial depressions.

The method described here provides a means of measuring flexural-wave dispersion and attenuation appropriate to a selected area, on the basis of single-sensor recordings made remote from the area of interest. The measured dispersion may then be inverted in the conventional manner to obtain thickness and elastic properties of the ice within the selected area. The procedure eliminates the need for equipment within the study area and minimizes the need for personnel within the area. As only a single sensor is necessary, the requirements for recording equipment and sensor cabling are also minimized. The method is suited to any study of flexural-wave dispersion from artificial sources and is ideally suited to the study of areas where personnel and equipment safety are a major concern.
