Estimates have been made of the mass budget of the total drainage basin of Lambert Glacier. These show a small but significant positive state of balance for the interior basin (the accumulation area up-stream of the major ice streams), and strongly suggest a positive balance for the Lambert Glacier system (the region of major ice streams, between the Amery Ice Shelf and the interior basin). The total mass flux into the interior basin is estimated as 60 Gt a−1. Results are presented from a number of ice movement stations established between 1972 and 1974 around the perimeter of the southern Prince Charles Mountains. These results, together with ice thicknesses from radio echo-sounding in the area, give a total mass outflux through the 2 000 m contour of 30 Gt a−1, implying a budget excess of a further 30 Gt a−1 over the whole interior basin. Results from velocity and ice thickness measurements give a mass discharge through a section near the junction of Lambert Glacier and the Amery Ice Shelf of 11 Gt a−1. Losses within the Lambert Glacier system proper account for a further 7 Gt a−1 and an overall mass excess of 12 Gt a−1 is estimated for the Lambert Glacier system. This present positive state of balance contrasts with geomorphological evidence from the southern Prince Charles Mountains of a large drop in ice level in recent geological time, and the ice surface in the area may now be building up after a major recession.

Contact stress transducers were placed in subglacial bedrock and used to monitor continuously shear stress and normal pressure changes at the contact with the overriding glacier sole 100 m beneath the surface of the Glacier d’Argentière during periods in summer 1973 and spring 1975. The measured fluctuations in normal pressure and shear stress do not appear to be related to changes in sliding velocity. Analysis of the data reveals short-term fluctuations in normal pressure and shear stress which appear to be related to the passage of individual large debris particles or groups of particles over the transducer. The shear stress appears to be a function of the volume concentration of debris in the ice. The volume concentration at any point appears to be partially dependent on a “streaming” process by which basal debris-rich ice tends to flow around the lateral flanks of hummocks on the glacier bed. Where sub-glacial cavities occur, this streaming effect appears to be dependent on the extent of cavitation and thus on ice overburden pressure and velocity. It is suggested that this process can account for an apparent lag between changes in normal pressure and shear stress.

The maximum ratio between shear and normal stress averaged over a period of 10 min was 0.44. This is equivalent to a spatial average over 0.3 cm. Debris concentrations in basal ice of up to 43% by volume occurred. It is suggested that concentrations of this order are common at the base of temperate glaciers and thus that a significant part of the drag at the base of a glacier may be contributed by frictional interactions between the basal-debris load and the bed.

Using expressions for ice-shelf creep derived by Weertman (1957) and Thomas (1973[b]) a general method is developed for calculating equilibrium thickness profiles, velocities, and strain-rates for any ice shelf. This is done first for an unconfined glacier tongue and the result agrees well with data for Erebus Glacier tongue (Holdsworth, 1974). Anomalies occur within the first 3 km after the hinge zone and these are too great to be the result of local bottom freezing; they are probably due to disturbance of the velocity field. Secondly, profiles are calculated for bay ice shelves. Thickness gradients are largely independent of melt-rate or flow parameters but are inversely proportional to the width of the bay. Data from Antarctic ice shelves agree with this result both qualitatively and quantitatively. The theory is readily extended to ice shelves in diverging and converging bays. An ice shelf in a diverging bay can only remain intact if it is thick enough and slow enough to creep sufficiently rapidly in the transverse direction. If it cannot, it will develop major rifts or will come adrift from the bay walls. It is then likely to break up. The presence of ice rises or areas of grounding towards the seaward margin can radically alter the size of the ice shelf which can form. The theory could be used as a starting point to study non-equilibrium behaviour.

Measurements made on traverses over ice caps in the Queen Elizabeth Islands show that there is a region of very high accumulation (>40 g cm–2 year–1) on the slopes facing Baffin Bay and one of low accumulation (<15 g cm–2 year–1) in the interior parts of northern Ellesmere Island. Ablation rates in summer show much less regional variation over the same ice caps except for lower rates along the north-west edge of the islands and possibly on the Baffin Bay slopes as well. However, there is a stronger relationship between ablation and elevation which is exponential below the firn line. From the fractional 18O content of the snow it is shown that Baffin Bay contributes significant amounts of moisture (>20% of the total) to the Baffin Bay slopes. In addition the Arctic Ocean is seen as another, but much less significant, moisture source. The δ18O data show two effects on the condensation processes—an orographic one (i.e. adiabatic cooling) and a distance-from-source effect (isobaric cooling) where the source is somewhere to the south-east of the islands.

Electrical resistivity measurements were carried out at station J9 on the Ross Ice Shelf where temperature measurements were available to a depth exceeding three-quarters of the thickness of the shelf. As in a previously published study at a point about 30 km up-steam (Bentley, 1977), the apparent resistivities fit well to a model based upon a steady-state ice shelf with zero bottom balance-rate and an apparent activation energy in the solid ice of 0.15 to 0.25 eV (14–24. kJ mol−1), with preference for the lower end of the range. This model also fits the observed temperature data almost perfectly. Causes of resistivity variation with depth other than the temperature, such as impurity content, metamorphic history, grain size and crystal orientation, probably do not strongly affect the resistivity depth function. Our conclusion is that the true activation energy in the solid ice is less than 0.25 eV (24 kJ mol−1) and perhaps as small as 0.15 eV (14 kJ mol−1), although a reduction by a factor of two or three in the ionic impurity concentration between 50 and 250 m depth cannot be entirely ruled out as a cause of the low apparent temperature effect. A note added in proof indicates that Herron and Langway (in press) have, in fact, reported a decrease in Na+ concentration with increasing depth by a factor of two or three.

The results of 66 Schlumberger geoelectric soundings on first-year sea ice are analysed to obtain average values of d.c. electrical resistivity both parallel ρ1 and perpendicular ρp to the long brine cell direction. This analysis yields ρ1 = 104 Ω m, 80 Ω m, 45 Ω m, and ρp = 298 Ω m, 230 Ω m, 129 Ω m for brine volumes νb of 40‰, 67‰, and 82‰ respectively. The observed dependence of ρ1 on νb is used in conjunction with a mixing formula for the electrical resistivity of a two-phase heterogeneous system to arrive at values of “average” brine cell lengths l for relatively warm sea ice. This treatment yields l ≈ 1.7 cm for 40‰ ≤νb≤ 70‰ with a rapid extension of brine cell lengths for brine volumes above c. 70‰.

Subtle rhombus and rhomboid parallelogram patterns occur on Vaughan Lewis Glacier and the Gilkey Glacier System, Juneau Icefield, Alaska. The patterns are within the firn at the firn-ice interface, are formed by differential recrystallization within narrow preferred zones, and are apparently manifestations of stresses transferred upward from the glacier ice. On the glaciers of the Gilkey System the patterns occur where intense lateral shortening is indicated by abrupt convergence of medial moraines and an abundance of extension crevasses. The short axes of the rhombi and the obtuse angle bisectors of the rhomboids are subparallel to the strike of extension crevasses, therefore to the axis of shortening. The long axes of the rhombi and the acute angle bisectors of the rhomboids are parallel to the foliation, and ice-flow direction. The angles of the parallelograms are variable locally, but average 105° and 75°; the variation seems to reflect intensity and duration of stress. Similar parallelograms occur within the troughs of wave bulges below the Vaughan Lewis Icefall. In the wave bulges, the foliation arcs parallel the wave. The long axes of the rhombi and acute angle bisectors of the rhomboids parallel the foliation around the foliation arc. The short axes of the rhombi and the obtuse angle bisectors of the rhomboids parallel the strikes of radial crevasses, are perpendicular to the direction of extension, and form a fan divergent down-stream. The precise mechanisms and conditions of formation of the parallelograms are not yet understood. Preliminary strain-rate measurements suggest, however, that correlations exist between the orientations of the principal strain-rates and the axes of the patterns, and between the magnitude of the strain-rates and the axial lengths of the patterns.

From field observations this paper describes the growth and development of first-year sea ice and its interaction with petroleum. In particular, when sea ice initially forms, there is an upward salt transport so that the ice surface has a highly saline layer, regardless of whether the initial ice is frazil, columnar, or slush ice. When the ice warms in the spring, because of the eutectic condition, the surface salt liquifies and drains through the ice, leading to the formation of top-to-bottom brine channels and void spaces in the upper part of the ice. If oil is released beneath winter ice, then the oil becomes entrained in thin lenses within the ice. In the spring, this oil flows up to the surface through the newly-opened brine channels and distributes itself within the brine-channel feeder systems, on the ice surface, and in horizontal layers in the upper part of the ice. The paper shows that these layers probably form from the interaction of the brine drainage with the percolation of melt water from surface snow down into the ice and the rise of the oil from below. Finally in the summer, the oil on the surface leads to melt-pond formation. The solar energy absorbed by the oil on the surface of these melt ponds eventually causes the melt pond to melt through the ice, and the oil is again released into the ocean.

Field investigation of six medial moraines on glaciers near Arolla, Valais, Switzerland, has revealed that all are nourished by englacial till. This is probably derived from supraglacial point-sources on the accumulation zones of the glaciers, and is released in increasing quantities on the ablation zones, where it emerges diffusely or by way of clearly defined transverse or longitudinal debris bands. Possible mechanisms of formation of these debris bands are reviewed, and it is proposed that the transverse bands originated as crevasse fillings on the accumulation zones. Morphologically all six moraines display waxing sections (of increasing height and breadth), related to development of a protective till cover and resultant differential ablation of the glacier surface. Two only display waning sections (of decreasing height), resulting from lateral sliding of till and “inverted” differential ablation resulting from extreme attenuation of till cover. Four “moraine-types” (related to nature of debris supply and detailed morphology) are identified in the Arolla area. It is believed that these may form the basis for a classification of medial moraines.

Numerical hydrodynamic simulation of the jet-roof geometry for control of snow deposition to prevent cornice formation at mountain ridges is reported. Different jet-roof geometries are evaluated based upon the extent and size of the ground-surface stagnation region and the recirculation region to the lee of the roof. Results show that jet-roof length should be of the same order as nominal height of the roof from the ground surface. Efficient placement of the roof is shown to be that with the leading edge directly above the mountain ridge, and roof angle approximately equal to lee slope angle. In numerical simulation of flow-field start-up, near steady-state flow is approached in less than 1.0 s real time, indicating short transient-flow duration.

Rennick Glacier is one of the major ice drainages in northern Victoria Land. Unlike glaciers farther south along the Transantarctic Mountains, Rennick Glacier does not drain into the Ross Ice Shelf but flows directly into a seasonally ice-covered ocean. Therefore, current fluctuations of this glacier are unhampered by the dampening effects of the Ross Ice Shelf. The primary controls on the activity of this glacier and others in this region are mass balance and sea-level.

Two major glacial events are recorded in the upper Rennick Glacier region. The location of erratics and glacially scoured features suggest that during the oldest or Evans glaciation ice covered all but the highest peaks in the region. Following this glaciation a re-advance produced the Rennick glaciation. Drift produced during this glaciation has a surface cover of unweathered clasts and is commonly found in the form of recessional moraines with associated ice-marginal lakes. Rennick Glacier is currently in a recessional phase of the Rennick glaciation. The phase is characterized by physical re-adjustments of local ice masses including progressive inland migration of the Rennick Glacier grounding line. To date the grounding line has migrated up to the mid-point of the glacier. This trend may be expected to continue.

The turbulent flux of sensible heat in the energy balance of a glacier surface is assumed to be proportional to the temperature difference between the glacier surface and the atmosphere at the same level but outside the thermal influence of the glacier. The factor of proportionality between them is first explained in terms of friction velocity, roughness height, and stability function of the logarithmic wind and temperature profile. It is then derived from climatological records and measurements of the energy balance and its altitudinal gradients at Hintereisferner. Examples of the energy-balance components and their change with altitude are given for the entire ablation season as well as for short periods. The heat transfer coefficients derived have a mean value of 1.7±0.2 MJ m−2 d−1 K−1 (40 ± 5 ly d−1 K−1).

Avalanche-hazard evaluation by field analysts is largely achieved along causal intuitive lines, depending for its success upon the experience of the analyst in his particular area. Several attempts have been made in the past to quantify such procedures by means of statistical models based upon meteorological measurements. Modified forms of a multivariate technique known as linear discriminant analysis have been tried with only partial success. Intercorrelated variables and autocorrelated data, omission of time-lagged terms, insufficient variation in the dependent variable, and sampling difficulties may have combined to weaken the discriminant approach. These problems and the nature of the phenomenon suggest that a stochastic transfer-function time-series approach may be a useful alternative method.

A numerical weighting scheme has been devised for the representation of avalanche activity for the Rogers Pass area of British Columbia in terms of terminus, size, and moisture-content codes for each event. From various types of correlation analysis performed on data for the period 1965–73, models were developed using the “best” weighting scheme for avalanche activity representation and the most promising meteorological variables, as indicated by the results of the correlation analysis.

These relatively simple models demonstrate a good fit to the actual data, in both a descriptive and a simulated-forecasting situation.

The different factors contributing to the formation of the gas porosity of sea ice are: (Ia) gases captured during the formation of the initial ice cover, (Ib) gases released from solution during the initial freezing of sea-water, (Ic) the inclusion of gases rising from the sea bottom, (2a) the substitution of gas for brine drained from the ice during times of melting, (2b) the release of gas from the brine within the ice during the course of partial freezing, and (2c) the formation of voids filled with water vapour during the course of internal melting. An analysis is made of each of these processes and it is concluded that processes Ib, 2a, and 2C are important. Process Ic may also be a major effect but it is difficult to evaluate until the rate of gas release from the sea floor is better known. The migration of air pockets into the ice from the overlying snow is shown to be a possible but not a significant effect. Available data on the composition of gas in sea ice are reviewed and it is shown to be significantly different from air. Possible causes for these differences are discussed.

The porosity of sea ice, i.e. the total relative volume of its gas plus its brine inclusions, is one of the factors strongly affecting its strength, as has been shown by Tsurikov (1947) and by Weeks and Assur (1968). In seas with high salinities the effect of the presence of brine within the ice will usually be the dominant factor. However on water bodies with low salinities the effect of the gas included within the ice may be greater than the effect of the brine. Despite its significance there have not been any attempts at a quantitative analysis of the entrapment of gas in sea ice. This paper is an attempt at such a study.

Field investigations of supraglacial debris were carried out during the monsoon season in 1974 on G2 glacier near Tukche Peak in Hidden Valley, Mukut Himal, Nepal. The thickness of the debris layer was observed to increase down-glacier. Laboratory analysis, however, showed a decrease in particle size in the same direction. This decrease is explained in terms of mixing of particles contained in glacier ice with the original debris as melting proceeds. A simple relation between debris mass and glacier flow is introduced to explain the observed results.

Experimental measurements were made of changes in grain-size distribution with time in snow saturated with solutions of various impurity contents. Qualitatively, the changes in grain-size distribution occur by shrinkage and eventual disappearance of the relatively small particles and growth of the relatively large particles by a solid mass-exchange process which conserves the total solid mass. The distribution of relative grain size is found to be essentially time independent except for transient effects lasting only several to several tens of hours after the time of initial saturation. Mean grain volume increases at a constant rate, which for solutions of impurity concentration less than about 0.01 mol 1–1 is (5 to 6) X 10–3 mm3 h–1. In pure solutions the smallest particles shrink at a characteristic rate of about 1 x 10–2 mm3 h–1. Once the steady relative-size distribution is established, the rate of volume change of typical grains varies linearly with grain volume from the characteristic negative rate for the smallest particles through zero for particles of mean volume to positive values for particles of larger volume. The basic features of the changes that take place are explained in terms of heat-flow controlled melting and freezing determined by temperature differences associated with the effect of particle surface curvature on melting temperature. The constant rate of increase of mean grain volume is a consequence of conservation of total ice volume. The expectation that particles of intermediate size would be neither shrinking or growing leads to the conclusion that the actual rate of increase in mean grain volume is about one-half the characteristic melting rate of the smallest particles, which fits the observations. The process of grain growth is slowed by impurities in a way which can be predicted from the melting-temperature depression caused by the impurity and its diffusion coefficient. The transport of heat between grain surfaces is largely through the liquid-filled gaps between them, but about 19% is conducted through the solid.

Vertical shear stress in ice shelves cannot be precisely zero, since the upper and lower surfaces are generally not parallel. By performing stress balance on a vertical column in an ice shelf we calculate what its magnitude must be. This is done for an unconfined glacier tongue and for a confined bay ice shelf; first, using the assumption of constant temperature and density with depth, and secondly, using realistic data and profiles for Erebus Glacier tongue and for the Amery ice shelf. Shear stresses increase almost linearly with depth and are proportional to surface slope. For Erebus Glacier tongue the shear stress is at most 5% of the magnitude of the direct stress deviators and its action through the ice shell should result in differential movement of 1.8 cm a−1 between the top and bottom of the ice shelf. For the Amery ice shelf, the shear stress is at most 0.4% of the magnitude of the direct stress deviators and this should lead to differential movement of 2.5 cm a−1 between the top and bottom of the ice shelf. Shear stresses are therefore generally negligible in comparison with direct stress deviators and can be ignored when considering the overall dynamics of ice shelves. Differential movement is unlikely to be detectable.

A computer code is reported that models two-dimensional flow of a snow-avalanche cross-section over a down-slope structure of arbitrary cross-sectional shape. Impact forces and pressure are predicted, and the flow pattern past the structure may be arrayed pictorially. The model is applied to the prediction of forces on rectangular obstacles which are of fractional height to the nominal avalanche flow depth for avalanche flow speeds up to 20 m/s. The program is applied to modeling an experiment by Salm of impact of snow blocks upon a slope-normal wall in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the code in comparison to impact-force histories measured by Salm. Difference between the experimental results and the computer simulation is less than 21%, and supporting discussion is given on factors that may account for the difference.

A two-dimensional, transient fluid-dynamics computer code has been modified for specific application to the avalanche-runout problem. This code, called AVALNCH, permits the separation of path geometry effects from such flow factors as friction and viscosity. The longitudinal profile of the avalanche path is divided into cells, 10 to 20 m long, each of which can be assigned specific values for slope gradient, surface friction, and internal kinematic viscosity. The program gives average avalanche speed cell-by-cell down the path and the location and depth of avalanche debris. Internal kinematic viscosity and surface friction were modeled on an avalanche path of simple geometry and were found to be of about equal significance in predicting runout distance. Additionally, surface friction is represented by an exponentially increasing function as speed decreases in the runout zone, in order to model observed avalanche terminal-motion characteristics. Program AVALNCH is reduced to a basic algorithm that is efficient to run, and contains the essential mechanics to model avalanche flow accurately. The most pressing need is for more physical data to permit the matching of program output to observed results under a variety of conditions.

A series of end moraines, with a remarkable saw-tooth pattern, is reported from the glacier foreland of Bødalsbreen, a northern outlet of the ice cap Jostedalsbreen. The three-dimensional morphology of the moraines is described and analysed. Historical records and lichenometric measurements indicate that they were deposited after the “Little Ice Age” glacier maximum of the mid-eighteenth century. It is inferred that the local topography of Bødalen was conducive to the formation of a heavily crevassed pecten at the snout of Bødalsbreen, which produced the end moraines by a push mechanism during minor glacier advances. The observations suggest that pushing may be an underestimated mechanism in moraine ridge formation generally.
