The effect of late season insect infestation on seed yield, yield components, oil content and oil quality of two canola species (Brassica napus L. and B. rapa L.) and two mustard species (B. juncea L. and Sinapis alba L.) was examined over 2 years. In each year, ten genotypes from each species were evaluated with late season insects controlled with either methyl parathion or endosulfan insecticides, and without insecticides. Major late season insect damage in 1992 was caused by cabbage seedpod weevil (Ceutorhynchus assimilis Paykull), while diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) and aphids (primarily cabbage aphids, Brevicoryne brassicae L.) were major insect pests in 1993. Insecticide application was very effective in controlling diamondback moth larvae and adult cabbage seedpod weevils, but only partially effective in controlling aphids. Higher numbers of diamondback moth larvae were observed on mustard species compared to canola species. S. alba was completely resistant to cabbage seedpod weevil and there was no damage due to this pest observed. Aphid colonization was observed on plants from all species, but infestation on S. alba and B. rapa occurred too late to have a major effect on seed yield. Seed oil content of canola species was significantly reduced by insect damage although oil quality (indicated by fatty acid profile) was not affected by insect attack. Uncontrolled insect infestation reduced seed yield of canola species by 37 and 32% in B. napus and B. rapa, respectively. Least yield reduction occurred in S. alba, where average yield reduction from plants in untreated control plots was <10% of insecticide treated plants. S. alba, therefore, has good potential as an alternative crop suitable for northern Idaho because it can be grown with reduced late season insecticide application.

1. The object of the experiment was to determine the effects of varying the quantities of herbage available to cows on their diet and milk production.

2. Four groups of five Ayrshire cows were strip grazed for three periods of 3-4 weeks on areas calculated from sample cuts to supply (A) 25, (B) 35, (C) 45 or (D) 55 lb. dry matter per cow per day. These periods were interspersed between four standard periods of 2-3 weeks, in which all the cows were strip grazed on 50-60 lb. dry matter per head per day.

3. Measurements of milk production and of herbage consumption, by the chromic oxide-faecal nitrogen technique, were made for the last 12 or 16 days of experimental and last 8 days of standard periods. The observations made in the standard periods were used as covariates in the analyses of those made in the experimental periods.

1. The results are reported of a series of 8-day magnesium metabolism trials carried out with milking cows fed a variety of typical winter stall rations.

2. Twelve cows fed a standard ration of 15 lb. hay plus 12 lb. of a concentrate mixture containing 3 parts dredge corn, 1 part bran, 1 part decorticated groundnut meal and 1 lb./cwt. Churn 105 minerals, showed variations in the proportion of the feed magnesium excreted in the faeces of from 66·53 to 76·98%, probably reflecting individual differences in the capacity of animals to absorb magnesium.

3. Wide differences in the utilization of the magnesium in typical winter rations were observed. Mean values, with a standard error, obtained for the proportion of the feed magnesium excreted in the faeces with various types of ration were as follows: hay plus concentrates, 71·48 ± 0·94; hay plus proprietary dairy cubes, 62·15 ± 2·73%; hay, proprietary dairy cubes plus decorticated groundnut meal, 91·98 ± 1·93%; hay, silage (1) plus concentrates, 79·53 ± 0·99%; hay, silage (2) plus concentrates, 74·07 ± 4·24%; hay, mangolds plus concentrates, 74·28 ± 5·91%.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Gamenya was grown in a Mediterranean type environment in two separate field experiments, to determine the effects of nitrogen application and date of seeding on floret survival. One treatment, intermediate in nitrogen level and sowing date, was common in both experiments. Rates and durations of spikelet initiation and durations of the floret initiation period were estimated. At maturity, yield and yield components were measured and occurrence of individual grains at each floret position on odd-numbered spikelets were recorded. The time of floret initiation relative to terminal spikelet formation and the subsequent occurrence of grain were examined.

Florets developed first in spikelets 5-13 and last in spikelet 1. Added nitrogen hastened the initiation of florets but did not affect the number initiated; it also increased the numbers of grains per spikelet. In the last sowing date treatment, time to floret initiation decreased, but the sequence of floret initiation was unaffected.

Numbers of florets and grains on tillers were less than on main shoots. Only about 28% of all florets initiated developed into grain.

The main conclusion was that the florets which initiated before the terminal spikelet formed grain and those that initiated afterwards did not; we accordingly postulate that the vascular system between the rachis and the floret develops as the floret is initiated, but that after terminal spikelet formation, this is inhibited and further grains then fail to develop.

Cell walls from mature stems of three tropical grass species (Digitaria decumbens (pangola), Setaria anceps (cv. Kazangula) and sugar cane), and temperate barley straw, were analysed for lignin, carbohydrate, and the maj or acyl groups ferulate, ρ-coumarate and acetate. Samples were incubated in nylon bags in the rumen of sheep in a 4 x 4 latin-square design, and rates of disappearance of cellulose, hemicellulose, xylose, arabinose, ferulate, ρ-coumarate and acetate were determined during 60 h incubation. Interspecies differences in cell-wall chemistry appeared largely in the variable degree of acylation with p-coumaric acid (1·0–3·3%) and acetate (0·5–3·6%), and the high glucose concentration in the hemicellulose from pangola (17%) and Setaria (9%). Barley had much lower concentrations of these components than the tropical species. After 24 h incubation, losses of cellulose and acyl groups were greatest from pangola, whereas hemicellulose and its major components xylose and arabinose were degraded to the greatest degree from barley straw. Setaria cell-wall components were generally more resistant to degradation than the other species. No relationship was found between the concentration of any cell-wall constituent and degradability measurements. Nor were changes in microbial population, indicated by measuring the accumulation of cystine on the fibres, related to the rate or degree of degradation of any of the measured cell-wall constituents. Lignin was fractionated with alkali into insoluble and soluble fractions. The latter (25–50% of original lignin) gave high interspecies correlations with the degradability of total hemicellulose and its component monosaccharides. It was concluded that variability in the biodegradability of the cell walls was more likely due to in situ structural features, such as cross-linking between polymers, than to the concentration of any particular cell-wall constituent.

Most crop models make use of a nutrient-balance approach for modelling crop response to soil fertility. To counter the vast input data requirements that are typical of these models, the crop water productivity model AquaCrop adopts a semi-quantitative approach. Instead of providing nutrient levels, users of the model provide the soil fertility level as a model input. This level is expressed in terms of the expected impact on crop biomass production, which can be observed in the field or obtained from statistics of agricultural production. The present study is the first to describe extensively, and to calibrate and evaluate, the semi-quantitative approach of the AquaCrop model, which simulates the effect of soil fertility stress on crop production as a combination of slower canopy expansion, reduced maximum canopy cover, early decline in canopy cover and lower biomass water productivity. AquaCrop's fertility response algorithms are evaluated here against field experiments with tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) in Ethiopia, with maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Nepal, and with quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) in Bolivia. It is demonstrated that AquaCrop is able to simulate the soil water content in the root zone, and the crop's canopy development, dry above-ground biomass development, final biomass and grain yield, under different soil fertility levels, for all four crops. Under combined soil water stress and soil fertility stress, the model predicts final grain yield with a relative root-mean-square error of only 11–13% for maize, wheat and quinoa, and 34% for tef. The present study shows that the semi-quantitative soil fertility approach of the AquaCrop model performs well and that the model can be applied, after case-specific calibration, to the simulation of crop production under different levels of soil fertility stress for various environmental conditions, without requiring detailed field observations on soil nutrient content.

1. Lactation was studied quantitatively in a heterogeneous stock of laboratory mice, in order to find out whether the milk production of mice could be satisfactorily evaluated from measurements of the growth of the young; and, if individual differences were proved to be readily detectable, to find out to what extent these differences were heritable.

2. The total weight of the litter suckled, at 12 days of age, was found to provide a convenient measure of milk production.

3. Since the amount of milk given by a mouse is greatly influenced by the number of young suckled, allowance for differences of litter size was made by means of an index of performance which expressed the amount of milk given by a mouse at a particular lactation as a percentage of the average amount given to litters of that size. The index of performance thus evaluated the response of the mouse to a standard stimulus and gave no indication of the maximum productivity of the mouse.

Forty-eight approximately 18-month-old Scottish Blackface ewes were used to study the effects of two levels of nutrition during mid-pregnancy (30–98 days of gestation) on the birth weight of lambs from ewes varying in weight, size and condition at first mating. The mean live weight (42–4 kg), size index (31–9) and condition score (2–4) at mating of the 26 ewes from flock A were all less than those of the 22 ewes from flock B (54–5, 39–4 and 2–9 respectively). Mean intakes of the low and high nutritional treatment ewes during mid-pregnancy were 10–6 and 22–0 g/kg/day respectively of a pelleted diet supplying 8–81 MJ metabolizable energy and 125–5 g crude protein/kg. These intakes produced estimated changes in net maternal weight of approximately – 5 and 0 kg respectively.

Mean lamb birth weights from ewes on the low and high nutritional treatments were:flock A, 3–32 and 3–83 kg; flock B, 4–96 and 4–23 kg respectively. Analyses showed intake during mid-pregnancy to have a positive effect on lamb birth weight in the flock A ewes, and a negative effect in flock B ewes. Mating weight accounted for 78% of the variance in birth weight in the low nutritional treatment ewes but had little effect in those on the higher level of feeding.

The practical implications of the results are discussed in relation to levels of juvenile nutrition.

1. A preliminary trial involving forty-six ewes demonstrated that when ewes in store condition were flushed for different periods, there was a marked increase in ovulation rate after 1 month with no further increase after 2 or 3 months. Flushing did not lead to ovulation rates higher than in ewes maintained in fat condition.

2. When similar ewes in fat condition were fed submaintenance diets there was no decline in ovulation rate while the animals had good body reserves, but as the period of submaintenance feeding was extended there was a gradual fall in ovulation rate.

3. In the main experiment forty-eight ewes were allocated to four groups of twelve ewes each. One group was fed a submaintenance diet till they were in moderately poor condition (submaintenance group). The other three groups were reduced to store condition and were then flushed on good pasture for 5–8 days, one oestrous cycle and two oestrous cycles, respectively. All ewes were slaughtered 2–5 days post-oestrus and half the ewes of each group were injected subcutaneously with 600 i.u. of P.m.s. on the twelfth or thirteenth day of the oestrous cycle prior to slaughter.

The present paper provides a geographically scaled analysis of adaptation to climate change using adoption of agricultural systems observed across Africa. Using c. 9000 farm surveys, spatial logit models were applied to explain observed agricultural system choices by climate variables after accounting for soils, geography and other household characteristics. The results reveal that strong neighbourhood effects exist and a spatial re-sampling and bootstrapping approach can remove them. The crops-only system is adopted most frequently in the lowland humid forest, lowland sub-humid, mid-elevation sub-humid Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs) and in the highlands in the east and in southern Africa. Integrated farming is favoured in the lowland dry savannah, moist savannah and semi-arid zones in West Africa and eastern coastal zones. A livestock-only system is favoured most in the mid/high-elevation moist savannahs located in southern Africa. Under a hot and dry Canadian Climate Centre (CCC) scenario, the crops-only system should move out from the currently favoured regions of humid zones in the lowlands towards the mid-/high elevations. It declines by more than 5% in the lowland savannahs. Integrated farming should increase across all the AEZs by as much as 5%, but less so in the deserts or in the humid forest zones in the mid-/high elevations. A livestock-only system should increase by 2–5% in the lowland semi-arid, dry savannah and moist savannah zones in the lowlands. Adaptation measures should be carefully scaled, up or down, considering geographic and ecological differentials as well as household characteristics, as proposed in the present study.

The benefits of reduced and zero-tillage systems have been presented as reducing runoff, enhancing water retention and preventing soil erosion. There is also general agreement that the practice can conserve and enhance soil organic carbon (C) levels to some extent. However, their applicability in mitigating climate change has been debated extensively, especially when the whole profile of C in the soil is considered, along with a reported risk of enhanced nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The current paper presents a meta-analysis of existing literature to ascertain the climate change mitigation opportunities offered by minimizing tillage operations. Research suggests zero tillage is effective in sequestering C in both soil surface and sub-soil layers in tropical and temperate conditions. The C sequestration rate in tropical soils can be about five times higher than in temperate soils. In tropical soils, C accumulation is generally correlated with the duration of tillage. Reduced N2O emissions under long-term zero tillage have been reported in the literature but significant variability exists in the N2O flux information. Long-term, location-specific studies are needed urgently to determine the precise role of zero tillage in driving N2O fluxes. Considering the wide variety of crops utilized in zero-tillage studies, for example maize, barley, soybean and winter wheat, only soybean has been reported to show an increase in yield with zero tillage (7·7% over 10 years). In several cases yield reductions have been recorded e.g. c. 1–8% over 10 years under winter wheat and barley, respectively, suggesting zero tillage does not bring appreciable changes in yield but that the difference between the two approaches may be small. A key question that remains to be answered is: are any potential reductions in yield acceptable in the quest to mitigate climate change, given the importance of global food security?

Sweating rates were analysed in relation to rectal temperatures of cattle to yield a measure of sweating response within and between animals. The measurements, performed over 36 days, were done in a natural radiant environment on six steers in each of three breeds, Brahman (B), Brahman × Hereford–Shorthorn cross-breds (BX), and Shorthorn (S). Each steer was recorded for 30 min on six occasions randomly distributed among 6 h between 08.00 and 13.00 h, and on six occasions between 11.00 and 16.00 h, all on different days. Sweating response, e.g. the linear slope of the relationship between sweat rate and rectal temperature, was greater for B (294 g/m2. h/°C) than for BX (146 g/m2.h/°C) or S (194 g/m2.h/°C) which did not differ; this helped to explain why the range and mean rectal temperature in B were lower and little affected by environmental heat. Curvilinear models of the sweating response indicated that in the environmental conditions of this study, the limit of sweating for B and BX was not reached, while for S, the sweating response approached a plateau. Between animals, the relationship of sweating response to mean rectal temperature was negative (P < 0·01) and its relationship to the time spent in the sun at pasture positive (P < 0·025). Thus this measure of sweating response was a good indicator of thermoregulatory ability of the cattle. However, the sweating response of the steers did not relate to their grazing time or growth. The reasons for this are discussed. Finally, the sweating response was found to be negatively correlated with metabolic rate between animals within breeds (P < 0·01) and this suggested that it may be difficult to combine the desirable traits of good heat adaptation and high metabolic potential in cattle.

During 1899–1964 various levels of 0·5 M sodium bicarbonate-soluble P had been established in an experiment on a sandy clay loam (pH 6·5–7·0) at Saxmundham, Suffolk. Modification made between 1965 and 1968 widened the range of soluble P values to 3–67 mg/kg. Relationships between these soluble P values and yields of potatoes and sugar beet in 1969–74 and cereals in 1970–7 were assessed. Responses by potatoes and sugar beet to freshly applied superphosphate were also determined at each level of soluble P. Residual effects of these dressings and responses to fresh superphosphate between 1974 and 1976 were measured by barley. Two amounts of N were tested on spring barley in 1976–7 and two cultivars of winter wheat were grown in 1977 and yields related to soluble P.

Relationships between yields and soluble P were described by an asymptotic regression equation. This model represented the measured yields well for all crops except barley, in one 4-year-period, when there were insufficient data at low soil P values and a linear regression model was fitted. The asymptotic model was used to estimate plateau yields each year and soluble P values at which yields were less than plateau values by one standard error. Average plateau yields, and associated soluble P values were: potatoes, 43 t/ha and 25 mg P/kg; sugar (from sugar beet) 6·8 t/ha and 20 mg P/kg; spring barley, given 63 kg N/ha, 4·7 t/ha and 25 mg P/kg; barley given 94 kg N/ha, 5·3 t/ha and 33 mg P/kg; winter wheat, 6·5 t/ha and 20 mg P/kg.

The model was further used to estimate responses to dressings of superphosphate at three levels of soluble P (9, 15 and 25 mg/kg) in the soils. Yield responses to 55 kg P/ha were 3·9, 2·1 and 1·8 t tubers/ha and 1·1, 0·3 and 0·0 t sugar/ha, for potatoes and sugar beet respectively, at the three levels of soluble P.

On impoverished soils (soluble P < 10 mg/kg) even the largest fresh applications of broadcast superphosphate did not raise yields to those achieved on enriched soils (soluble P > 25 mg P/kg) in the absence of fresh phosphate.

Soluble P in the soils accounted for much of the within-year variation of yields and estimated reliably and quantitatively the value of phosphate residues derived from both superphosphate and farmyard manure which had been applied in varying amounts and at different times between 1899 and 1976.

Recent work on the solubility of manganese compounds in the soil, leading to a general consensus of opinion that the solubility of this element is intimately controlled by the soil reaction and by the oxidation-reduction equilibrium, is shown to have an important bearing on the availability of this element to plants. This has been established by means of laboratory tests and pot experiments on three different soil types, characteristically deficient in available manganese. It has been shown that normal plant growth can be established on such soils either by increasing the acidity of the soil or by subjecting the soil to reducing conditions such as those brought about by high water saturation or temporary waterlogging. On these soils the increases in growth amounted to several hundred per cent. These responses are in every respect similar to those obtained by the application of manganese sulphate to the soils.

Irrigation experiments are described in which three cultivars were subjected to varying degrees of drought in the cool and hot seasons in Lima, Peru. The most severely draughted plots received, on average, 20% and 35% less water than the well-watered control plots, resulting in 20% and 52% yield reduction in the cool and hot seasons, respectively. Average fresh tuber yields ranged, according to cultivar, from 1370 to 2450 g/m2 in the summer and from 2800 to 4450 g/m2 in the winter, with tuber dry-matter percentages of c. 17% and 20%, respectively. The production of total dry matter per unit intercepted solar radiation (the conversion coefficient, estimated from the slope of the regression, in g/MJ) was markedly less during the hot season but, regressed on a photo thermal quotient ∑((MJ/m2)/(°C > 4·5°C)), a common relationship across seasons was achieved. The conversion coefficient was less in draughted than in well-watered plots, more so in the hot season.

Crop transpirational and evapotranspirational water use efficiencies (WUE) were less in the hot season largely because of the greater saturation vapour-pressure deficit. However, because of greater harvest index (HI) and more-efficient interception of solar radiation per unit of applied water by draughted than by well-watered plots in the summer, and despite a lower conversion coefficient, draughted plots showed greater WUE. Based on total water applied and final fresh tuber yields, WUE was, on average, 3·9 and 12·4 kg/m3 in the hot and cool seasons, respectively, values close to the extremes of the range of published values. Low HI in the summer was, to some extent, responsible for this seasonal difference.

Soil mineral nitrogen (Nmin) was measured to 90 cm at a total of 12 sites in the UK in the autumn after an oilseed rape experiment, which measured responses to fertilizer N. On average, Nmin, increased by 15 kg/ha per 100 kg/ha fertilizer nitrogen (N) applied to the rape, up to the economic optimum amount of N (Nmin). There were larger increases in Nmin where fertilizer applications exceeded Nopt, thus super-optimal fertilizer applications disproportionately increased the amount of nitrate likely to leach over-winter. The small effects of sub-optimal N on Nmin were associated with large increases in N offtake by the oilseed rape, whereas the larger effects of super-optimal N on Nmin were associated with only small increases in N offtake. Over 70% of the variation in autumn Nmin was explained by the previous rape's N fertilizer rate and the topsoil organic matter content.

Nitrogen applied to the rape increased grain yields of the succeeding wheat crops when no further fertilizer N was applied to the wheat. It was concluded that N applied to oilseed rape significantly affected Nmin after harvest, and these effects were not completely nullified by leaching over-winter, so soil N supply to the succeeding wheat crop was significantly increased. Responses in grain yield indicated that each 100 kg/ha N applied to the rape provided N equivalent to c. 30 kg/ha for the following cereal. Each 1% of soil organic matter further contributed N to the wheat, equivalent to 25 kg/ha.

It is important to ensure that oilseed rape receives no more than the optimum amount of fertilizer N if subsequent leaching is to be minimized. Reductions below optimum amounts will have only a small effect on leaching. Substantial changes in the economic optimum N for rape production should be accompanied by adjustment in fertilizer N application to following wheat crops. Fertilizer recommendation systems for wheat should take account of the fertilizer N applied to the preceding oilseed rape and the topsoil organic matter content.

A screening technique is described for determining the resistance of seedling cereal plants to Cercosporella herpotrichoides by observing the rate of penetration of successive leaf-sheaths by the pathogen pathogen growing from an artificially colonized 'cylinder' of straw placed over the emerging coleoptile.

The paper describes the results of over 300 factorial experiments carried out in each factory area in the years 1934–49 for the Sugar Beet Research and Education Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture as a result of co-operation between Rothamsted workers and the agriculturists and fieldmen attached to the beet factories. All the experiments tested the effects of levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potash, and rather more than half tested the effect of salt also.

Except on fen soils, nitrogen gave substantial responses in all factory areas, especially in the presence of high levels of potash or salt. Large variations in response from season to season were closely associated with the rainfall of the preceding winter months, responses being greater after wet winters than dry ones.

In spite of some selection of sites in favour of greater responses, the average net returns from phosphate were relatively small.

The effect of potash was closely linked with the amount of nitrogen applied; in the presence of nitrogen, dressings well above the level of 1·2 cwt. K2O per acre tested in the experiments are likely to give a useful net return. Soils derived from the Chalky Boulder Clay seem to be exceptional in showing no response. Apart from this, there were only small variations in responses to nitrogen and potash between factory areas. The application of 5 cwt. salt gave substantial responses in almost all parts of the country, whether or not potash was also applied; on the other hand, responses to potash were usually small when salt was also applied.

Whilst there was a general relationship between soil analysis for phosphate and potash (citric acid method) and crop response, adjustments to the optimal dressings according to soil analysis were not of sufficient reliability to be of much practical value.

1. Thirty-two single lambs were grazed together on pasture. At weekly intervals, from birth to 112 days of age, two lambs were slaughtered and various organs weighed immediately after death. Also the alimentary tracts of seven adult sheep were obtained immediately after death.

2. The rumen had the fastest growth rate of the four stomachs, followed by the reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, in that order.

3. Immediately after birth the four stomachs altered rapidly in their relative proportions, but by about 66 days of age they had reached approximately adult proportions.

4. The weights of the liver, heart and kidneys, relative to live weight, decreased during the first few weeks of life, and thereafter remained constant.

5. The weight of the spleen, relative to live weight, increased during the first week of life and thereafter remained constant.

The effect of systematic plot distribution upon the estimate of error of a field-plot experiment of 5 × 5 plots has been studied on ninety-one blocks taken from eight different uniformity trials, representing a wide variation in plot size and plot shape, crop, climate, and soil.

The arrangements studied are: two different knight's moves, two different diagonal arrangements, and eight irregular arrangements, seven of which have been chosen at random.

The investigation has shown that the use of systematic plans introduces a bias in the estimate of the error of the experiment. The use of the knight's move arrangement causes an over-estimation of the error, whereas the use of the diagonal causes an under-estimation.
