In this study, a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with quintuple band-notched and wide-band rejection characteristics is studied. The proposed antenna mainly consists of a rectangular radiating patch, a microstrip feeding line, and a modified rectangular ground plane. The quintuple band-notched functions with narrow stop bands are achieved at WiMAX (3.3–3.7 GHz), WLAN (5.15–5.35 GHz and 5.725–5.825 GHz), C-band IEEE INSAT/super-extended (6.7–7.1 GHz) by using three modified inverted U-shaped slots and two symmetrical rectangular slots on the radiating path. Each stop band formed in the UWB antenna can be adjusted independently, and deep reflection zeros are formed between the adjacent stop bands. The formation of reflection zeros improves the band-edge selectivity of the stop band, and the notch characteristics are more prominent. To further study the wide stop band (C-band and X-band) with good selectivity characteristics, a pair of L-shaped open slot is added to the edges of two rectangular slots. Additionally, a pair of modified Rho-shaped resonators is located near the feeding line to realize band-notched characteristic at ITU service bands (8.025–8.4 GHz), thus a quintuple band-notched UWB antenna is achieved. The shape factor (ratio of the −3 dB bandwidth to the −10 dB bandwidth) of the wide stop band is 0.56, which indicates that the antenna has excellent band-edge selectivity. To verify the performance of the proposed design, both the time-domain and the frequency-domain characteristics of the antenna have been studied and analyzed. The simulated and measured results verify the design as a good candidate for various portable UWB applications.

A novel wide 3-dB axial ratio (AR) circularly polarized 2 × 2 array antenna is proposed in this paper. The spindle-shaped coupling cavity with tilted waveguide is capable of generating circular polarization waves from incident linear waves, which improves the AR bandwidth (ARBW) of the antenna. With this structure, a similar amplitude of the two orthogonal transmitted wave components and a stable phase difference of nearly 90° can be generated. The circularly polarized antenna proposed herein has been fabricated. According to the measurement results, the operating bandwidth from 5.32 to 6.13 GHz is <−10 dB. In addition, the measured ARBW, which is below 3 dB, can cover the range of 5.41–6.02 GHz. The maximum gain of the antenna can attain 15.65 dBi, and the efficiency is better than 80%.

Antennas installed on aircraft are used for communications as well as for various radio navigation systems such as direction finders, distance measuring systems, and altimeters. Generally, these systems use blade antennas operating in the L frequency band. Recently, inverted-hat empty section monopole antennas have been found to be good candidates for such uses. In this study, we propose a new design of inverted-hat antenna based on optimized elliptical shapes and a filled cavity. The dielectric material added in the cavity helps to improve the monopole stability and to adjust the resonant frequency of the antenna. The proposed antenna meets the distance measuring equipment requirements, namely an omnidirectional radiation pattern in the H-plane, a vertical polarization, a frequency band from 960 MHz to 1.22 GHz, and a gain better than 1 dB. This antenna is entirely made of aluminum in order to obtain a homogeneity with the aluminum fuselage. In addition, the solution proposed brings a better protection against weather conditions. The antenna performance is analyzed on the basis of simulation and measurement results.

This paper presents a broadband miniaturized Fabry–Perot cavity resonator antenna (CRA) made of novel electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) superstrate as partially reflecting surface (PRS) and reactive impedance surface (RIS) backed rectangular patch antenna. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the proposed EBG exhibits the highest stopband bandwidth (BW) with a bandgap existing between 7.37 and 12.4 GHz (50.9%). Frequency-selective property of the EBG is utilized under plane wave incidence to demonstrate it as PRS superstrate in CRA antenna. The cavity is excited with a rectangular microstrip antenna which is made of two dielectric substrates with an additional RIS layer sandwiched between them. The RIS provides wideband impedance matching of the primary feed antenna. A 7 × 7 array of the EBG superstrate is loaded over the patch antenna having an overall lateral dimension of only 45 × 45 mm2 or 1.62 λ0 × 1.62 λ0 where λ0 is the free space wavelength at the center frequency of 10.8 GHz. The proposed Fabry–Perot CRA (FP-CRA) achieves gain enhancement of 6.59 dB as compared with the reference antenna and has a 10 dB return loss BW of 23.79% from 10.07 to 12.79 GHz. A prototype of the FP-CRA is fabricated and experimentally tested with single and dual layers of EBG superstrate. Measured results show BWs of 21.5 and 24.8% for the two cases with peak realized gain of 12.05 and 14.3 dBi, respectively. Later a four-element antenna array with corporate feeding is designed as the primary feed of the CRA. The simulation result shows a flat gain of >13 dBi with gain variation <1.2 dB over the impedance BW of 13.2%.

In this paper, filter and antenna integration is studied to produce a compact device for wireless front-end equipment. Filtering antennas are advanced due to their selectivity performance, represented by a flat gain response. Two filtering antennas are proposed to improve the selectivity using different orders. The first antenna is based on second-order filter and the other on third-order filter. Both antennas are designed to operate at 4.65 GHz for mid-band 5 G application with a bandwidth of 6.45%. The first antenna integrates a rectangular radiator and an interdigital resonator based on second-order filter. It obtained a bandwidth impedance of −10 dB for 300 MHz and a maximum gain of 6.48 dBi. Meanwhile, the second design consists of a rectangular radiator and two interdigital resonators based on third-order filter as the feedline. Having the same bandwidth as the first design, the second design achieved a flat gain of 6.37 dBi in the operational bandwidth. The second antenna design showed better selectivity with sharper gain than the first design. The two antennas were fabricated and measured for validation. The simulation and measurement results showed good agreement.

This work introduces a method for plasma state supervision, based on a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar sensor and a suitable signal evaluation enabling a continuous supervision method for the plasma state. Highly precise phase evaluation of the signal allows us to detect and visualize smallest changes in the plasma state. Assuming the plasma to act like a frequency-dependent dielectric material, the propagation of the electromagnetic wave depends on the plasma state and hence, also the measured phase. Broadband measurements are carried out at center frequencies of 80 and 140 GHz in a low-pressure plasma. The radar-based setup can be used for a very flexible application, capable for spatially resolved measurements in the plasma bulk. At the same time, the high measurement rate allows for quasi real-time monitoring, so that transient processes in the plasma are recorded. Due to the simple setup, this approach is most suitable for industrial applications to improve process control. The chosen different frequencies will show a change in the influence of the plasma on the electromagnetic wave demonstrating the advantages of multi-frequency approaches in future applications.

In this paper, a novel circularly polarized (CP) high-gain low-profile single-layer metasurface (MTS) antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide is presented for wideband low radar cross-section (RCS) applications. Characteristics mode analysis (CMA) technique is employed to simultaneously excite the useful modes rather than using conventional technique to achieve circular polarization in the wideband. By analyzing the characteristics modes of the antenna, gain of the antenna is also improved. Experimental results verify good performance of the proposed antenna with a compact size of 0.67λ0 × 0.67λ0 × 0.040λ0. The measured results of the antenna exhibit UWB impedance bandwidth of 96.93% in the frequency range of 3.7–10.65 GHz and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of about 41.8% in the frequency range of 5.3–8.1 GHz. The antenna shows a good radiation pattern with a measured peak gain of 7.9 dBic at 7.97 GHz. The proposed antenna achieves out-of-band scattering suppression in the wide range of 10–24 GHz because of MTS structure with peak RCS reduction of 19 dB at 12 GHz. The proposed antenna can be used for c- and x-band applications.

Wireless-connected wearable electronics are finding extensive usage for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes after the globally spread pandemic disease of COVID-19. Although they are undoubtedly helpful for keeping physical distance, their health effects are still under investigation from different aspects and are still a concern for the end-users. In this study, a custom M-shaped wearable antenna covering the wireless body area network and wireless local area network frequencies is designed, built, and measured. A beret cap made from a 2 mm thick textile is used as a substrate. The specific absorption rate (SAR) in a realistic human-head model due to electromagnetic energy produced by the antenna is evaluated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The SAR distributions for 1-g and 10-g tissues are calculated at 2.4 and 5.8 GHz. It is shown that the obtained maximum SAR values for 1-g and 10-g tissues at each frequency of interest were less than the limits determined by IEEE RF exposure guidelines and standards.

This article analyzes and describes phase nonlinearity reduction techniques in detail for ultra wideband complex receivers to qualify airborne system requirements. Phase nonlinearity directly affects the final frequency resolution coming from unknown threats. Thereby, the reduction of phase nonlinearity of all radio frequency (RF) channels including phase correlators is very essential. A simple phase nonlinearity calculation step has been shown in this article without taking the help of any coding (software). A detail excel sheet–based phase nonlinearity calculation has been explained and estimated with examples. Power and phase corrections are especially done to keep the RF response flat over a wide frequency spectrum to enhance better phase linearity. This is done by designing various equalizers with different slope gradients and adjusting power levels by using attenuation pads or reducing feeds by other means. Phase nonlinearity has been kept under control by tracking the phase of mixers, other passive/active components within ±5°, and all the RF channels within ±15°. The power level has been adjusted within P1dB or just beyond the P1dB to keep the harmonic level less, which in turn controls phase nonlinearity in all the active devices. The performance of phase correlators against various power levels has been analyzed to finalize uniform RF and LO power levels (feed) at the input of the phase correlators. The level of uniform feed has been decided after reviewing phase nonlinearity responses of the correlators. Thus, the final resolved frequency become accurate (<3 MHz root mean square). Finally, four receivers have successfully been developed and evaluated over temperature (−40°C to +71°C) and vibration to establish the method for mass production.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, which use multiple antennas to deliver faster data rates, are one of the promising methods in 5G services. 5G is a popular issue among the world's main telecom firms currently. The sub-6 GHz band for 5G applications in various countries lies between 3 and 5 GHz. The sub-6 GHz 5G bands are 3.4–3.8 GHz in Europe, 3.1–3.55 GHz in the USA, and 3.3–3.6 GHz and 4.8–4.99 GHz in China. This paper presents a two-element slotted octagon-shaped antenna operating in the sub-6 GHz band (3.1–4.5 GHz) for 5G applications. A T-formed isolation structure is placed at a ground plane to minimize mutual coupling between MIMO antennas. The proposed MIMO antenna has physical dimensions of 55 × 38 mm2 and an envelope correlation coefficient or correlation of 0.0004 over the entire operating band. The antenna operates at 3.6 GHz, with a return loss of 40.8 dB at the resonance. An antenna prototype has been investigated and proven to be of excellent quality in terms of performance like isolation >20 dB, efficiency >80%, and mean effective gain <−3 dB over the full operating band.

This article presents a novel dual-fed triple-frequency bands antenna using quarter-mode (QM)/ Eight-mode (EM) substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity resonators. A V-shaped slot is etched into the patch to divide the half-mode cavity into one QM and two EM cavities. One section of the EM cavity and QM cavity are excited with the help of individual micro-strip feedlines. This configuration yields two distinct frequency bands at 4.85 GHz due to TE110 mode of the EMSIW cavity and 5.87 GHz due to TE110 mode of the QMSIW cavity confirming the self-diplexing property. Later, when both the EM cavity sections are joined with the help of two metallic strips, an additional resonance appears at 7.34 GHz due to the excitation of TE120 mode. As compared to the conventional counterparts, the proposed structure is compact and simple. The footprint of the top patch is 0.6λ1 × 0.3λ1. To authenticate the proposed idea, the design is experimentally verified, and the measured results show a good covenant with the simulated results.

This paper proposes a wide band and multiband frequency reconfigurable antenna that can operate in the UWB, GSM, GPS, 4G LTE, WLAN, and WiMAX bands. The antenna is made up of a trapezoidal-shaped monopole radiator, which was inspired by a rectangular monopole antenna. The ground plane is modified by embedding T and L-shaped slots to notch the desired operating frequency. The proposed antenna can switch to six different frequencies using RF PIN diodes, making it suitable for modern wireless applications. A multilayer frequency selective surface (FSS) reflector is presented to improve the gain of the proposed reconfigurable antenna. The low-profile design achieved a significant increase in gain while retaining the UWB antenna's excellent impedance bandwidth. Because of the use of the FSS reflector, the antenna's average peak gain has increased from 6 to 10.4 dBi. The proposed antenna has a wide switching capability, which validates its unique feasibility for high-speed multiple Internet of Things applications via a common embedded platform under various applications.

A miniaturized and flexible frequency-selective surface (FSS) has been presented in this article with a unit cell size of 0.049 λc × 0.049 λc where λc is the free space wavelength at the lower cut-off frequency. In order to achieve an ultra-wide (−3 dB) second order pass band of 151.3% with enhanced selectivity factor of 0.887, a cascaded triple layered hybrid resonating structure has been proposed with symmetrical Minkowski island-shaped fractal geometry pair and spiral-shaped middle layer in optimized air gap coupling. Furthermore, 149.8% ultra-wide pass band also ascertains the conformal feature of the proposed structure. In addition to this, the proposed FSS provides the stable angular response for both TE and TM polarization. An equivalent circuit model has been synthesized for accurate frequency response. Finally, a sample prototype has been fabricated to verify the experimental validation. Excellent angular stability under large oblique incident and significant conformal characteristics ensure the compatibility of the proposed structure for electromagnetic stealth in 0.9–1.8 GHz GSM band, 2.10–2.14 GHz wireless medical telemetry band, 2.4–2.5 and 4.9–5.8 GHz WLAN band, 3.4–3.7 and 4.4–4.9 GHz sub-6 GHz 5 G band, and 3.7–4.2 GHz C band.

A flexible and high gain saw-tooth-shaped boundary fractal wearable antenna is anticipated for WBAN applications. A square shape is converted to the saw-tooth-shaped boundary by sequentially rotating the square at an angle of 45° and overlaid on one another and repeated the same for three iterations. The geometry is built on a flexible jeans substrate, and the total size of the anticipated antenna is 0.583λ × 0.583λ × 0.02λ at 2.4 GHz. A prototype has been made to test its suitability for wearable applications' gain, bandwidth, and efficiency. The results revealed that the proposed antenna provides an impedance bandwidth of 4.2% and a peak gain of 5.76 dBi at the 2.45 GHz ISM band. The anticipated antenna is wrapped around foam cylinders of radii 70 and 50 mm to test the stability and deformability of its performance. The full ground plane isolates the antenna from the human body contributing to the lower SAR values. The simulated maximum achieved specific absorption rate (SAR) of 0.3025 and 1.16 W/kg for 10 and 1 g of average tissue for the input power of 100 mW, respectively, found within the standards as per FCC. The peak gain, compact size, and SAR permanence made the anticipated antenna a worthy candidate for wearable on/off body applications.

This work proposes a novel, extremely miniaturized wideband linear–circular and linear–cross metasurface-enabled reflective polarizer. This design comprises a Meander-line structure with horizontal dipoles as the top frequency selective surface, printed on a 1 mm thin-grounded FR-4 substrate. The x/y-polarized incident electromagnetic wave is converted as circularly polarized from 10.60 to 10.92 GHz (LHCP/RHCP), 12.12 to 17.32 GHz (RHCP/LHCP), and 22.72 to 37.76 GHz (LHCP/RHCP) during reflection with 2.97, 35.33, and 49.74% Fractional Bandwidth (FBW). In addition, this design shows linear–cross conversion with a minimum 90% polarization conversion ratio from 11.41 to 12, 19.01 to 22.34, and 40.74 to 46.82 GHz with an FBW of 5.04, 16.11, and 13.89%. The device performance is considerably stable under different oblique incidences, and the polarizer's unitcell is compact with a structural periodicity of 0.089 × 0.064 $\lambda _L^2$, and ultra-thin low-profile substrate thickness of 0.035λL. The proposed prototype is fabricated, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated one. This article also mentions how this polarizer could be tuned for dual-band K- and Ka-band satellite applications. The authors believe that the design's novelty lies in the multiband conversion with circular-polarization orthogonality, a highly miniaturized unitcell's volume of 0.199 $\lambda _L^3$/1000, and better angular stability made this design a potential candidate for real-time satellite applications.

Radio telescopes are among the applications with the highest demands on a local oscillator (LO), which is used to receive and process the signals coming from the sky. Therefore the modules providing the required LO signal have traditionally been big and complicated. To overcome this disadvantage, we implement our own integrated frequency synthesizer inside a small LO module in this article. With this synthesizer we are able to achieve a jitter of only 50 fs integrated from 10 Hz to 2.5 GHz offset at a carrier frequency of 75 GHz. This is in part achieved by a very low in-band phase noise of −111.8 dBc at 10 kHz offset. The stabilizable frequency range is 62–88 GHz. Thus achieving promising results to fulfill this very demanding task with integrated frequency synthesizers in the future.

A closely confined coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed MIMO antenna sheltering the entire ultra-wideband (UWB) spectrum with high isolation as well as dual-band rejection attributes is presented and evaluated. The intended wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radiator embodies a pair of similar planar monopole elements (PME) together with the integration of the ingredients like a defected ground structure with Koch fractal boundaries, parasitic strips, cross-linked C-shaped parasitic resonators, and a Hilbert fractal neutralization line. The suggested UWB MIMO antenna houses an extensive bandwidth spanning between 2.64 and 12 GHz, sharply rejecting a pair of bands centered at 3.3 and 4.5 GHz. The wideband diversity antenna is realized in a closely packed measure of 26.50 mm (L) × 29.84 mm (W). A minute inter-element spacing of 0.51 mm is attained with the suggested layout. The numerical and experimental investigations of vital diversity parameters such as the envelope correlation coefficient, mean effective gain, total active reflection coefficient, as well as multiplexing efficiency depict high diversity performance. The consistency amidst the simulation as well as the empirical results recommends the worthiness of the intended antenna for handy UWB and UWB MIMO systems.

A low profile printed slot antenna (PSA) backed by broadband stacked artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is introduced in this study. First, a suggested PSA with the radiating tapered slots excited by coplanar-waveguide (CPW) is used to expand the bandwidth in the measured range of 9.05–10.95 GHz (S11 ≤ −10 dB). Then, the suggested stacked AMC surface as the ground plane of the antenna is inserted into the PSA to gain improved radiation efficiency. The realized result from the PSA with the 11 × 17 stacked AMC array exhibits −10 dB measured impedance bandwidth from 6.97 to 13.34 GHz (62.73%). The suggested PSA with AMC compared to the PSA without AMC exhibits a size reduction of 52%, enhanced bandwidth of almost 44%, and excellent impedance matching with uni-directional radiation patterns. The novel AMC unit cell is realized based on the recognized method of stacked elements. The stacked AMC design operates at 10.63 GHz with an AMC bandwidth of 8–12.84 GHz (45.8%) for X-band operation. Besides, by introducing a specific method based on the reflection results of the equivalent waveguide feed, the number of AMC unit cells is investigated to obtain an optimal AMC array. In this approach, an equivalent waveguide feed corresponding to the center operating frequency is considered to choose the number of AMC array reflector.

A two-element textile antenna with high isolation and polarization diversity is presented for 5 G communications, wearable technology and biomedical cancer detection applications. The flexible material is used with an orthogonally placed microstrip-feed radiator antenna responsible for polarization diversity. High isolation and low correlation are achieved between antenna elements with defected ground-based on diagonal and open-stubs, which perturbs the surface current and facilitates the achievement of circular polarization. The 10 dB impedance bandwidth (|S11|) of a two-element antenna varies from 3.3 to 4.3 GHz with more than 24 dB isolation (|S21|). The envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) and channel capacity loss (CCL) of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) antenna parameters are less than 0.2 and 0.35 bits/s/Hz respectively, which validates the diversity performance of the antenna.

In this paper, a novel approach for simultaneously correcting multiple degraded patterns under the failure condition of time-modulated linear arrays is proposed. The approach is based on the use of trapezoidal pulse with non-zero rise/fall time to control the switching status of the radio frequency switches that enables ON-OFF keying modulation of the array elements. After deriving a closed form expression of harmonic power loss and through the in-depth analysis, it is explored that the proposed trapezoidal pulse, because of having non-zero rise/fall time, provides less undesired harmonic power loss as compared to the conventionally used rectangular pulse with ideally zero rise/fall time. With the aim of reconstructing the degraded patterns with improved directivity and suppressed higher sideband power, three pulse-switching strategies based on rectangular and trapezoidal pulse have been employed, and their comparative performances prove the superiority of the proposed approach.
