A new wideband multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system able to operate in a frequency band ranging between 3.3 and 7.1 GHz is proposed for fifth-generation (5G) new radio applications for future smartphones. The design structure contains four pairs of compact microstrip-fed slot antennas, located at the corners of an FR-4 printed circuit board. Each pair of antennas consists of a radiator with two concentric annular slots, fed by two L-shaped microstrip-feeding lines and provides polarization and radiation pattern diversity function due to the orthogonal placement of their feed-line. In order to reduce the mutual coupling characteristic, we have inserted a rectangular slot under each microstrip feed-line. Besides, we have coupled and linked the two rings by a small gap to combine and move the resonant modes so as to achieve wideband coverage. The measured and simulated results show that the proposed design achieves the desired performance, such as isolation >12 dB, a total efficiency >48%, and an envelope correlation coefficient <0.07. In addition, the radiation pattern, the total efficiency, the realized gain, and the channel capacity are also studied. According to the reached results, the proposed MIMO antenna may be a suitable application-oriented design for 5G mobile communication.

Sigma-delta radio over fiber (ΣΔ-RoF) is an expedient technology for next-generation networks including 5G cloud/centralized radio access networks (C-RAN). In this article, we demonstrate a realistic experimental scenario for ΣΔ-RoF link targeting C-RAN fronthaul applications, by using baseband second-order 1-bit sigma-delta modulation (ΣΔ-M). The experimental set-up validates the LTE 20 MHz signals having modulation order of 256-quadrature amplitude modulation for a carrier frequency of 3 GHz, up to 10 km of standard single mode fiber. A detailed analysis of the ΣΔ-RoF system performance is reported by adjacent channel leakage ratio and error vector magnitude. Furthermore, an experimental study is evaluated where ΣΔ-RoF is compared with its counterparts. It is deduced that ΣΔ-RoF corroborates the present range of C-RAN fronthaul networks and can be a promising candidate for future mobile haul applications.

A new setup is proposed for the measurement of current–voltage pulsed characteristics of electron devices. The main advantages of the system consist in: shorter pulse widths through generation in a 50-Ω environment, simple average current monitoring through separation of the direct and alternate current paths, setting of average voltage values independently of pulse amplitudes and duty cycle, and stability of the setup guaranteed by wide-band dissipative terminations. The system is used for the characterization of dispersive effects due to carrier energy traps and thermal phenomena in GaAs and GaN on SiC field effect transistors. The basic differences between the two technologies are highlighted in the paper.

Ultra-compact band-pass filters with Nth-order pseudoelliptic response are presented allowing dramatic volume and mass savings (up to about 90%) compared to conventional filters at the price of a modest Q-factor reduction. TM dual-mode cavities loaded with high-permittivity (εr > 30) ceramic cylinders are employed, while non-resonating modes are used to create N transmission zeros symmetrically or non-symmetrically located in the pass-band. A single cavity behaves as a generalized doublet generating two transmission poles and two transmission zeros and is used as a basic building block for N-pole and N-zero filters with symmetric or asymmetric response. To prove the effectiveness of the approach, a very compact fourth-order filter with 4.35 GHz center frequency, four transmission zeros has been designed, fabricated, and tested showing an unloaded Q close to 2000. It is finally shown that the filter response can be shifted in frequency by simply replacing the dielectric material with another having different εr, so that the same metal enclosure can be used to realize various filters operating at different frequency bands.

In this paper, a new way of obtaining a band rejection in a ultra wideband (UWB) filter using a uniplanar Electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is reported. The EBG structure has a bandgap centered at 6.69 GHz which is almost 38% lower compared with the conventional uniplanar EBG of same dimensions. A one-dimensional EBG structure coupled with a microstrip line provides a narrow bandgap, which is used in obtaining a notch in the UWB filter. Single notch UWB filters with variations in the placement of EBG are fabricated producing a notch centered at 5.19 GHz (wireless local area network (WLAN)). A dual notch (5.16 and 8.24 GHz (satellite communication)) UWB filter is also fabricated with two different unit cell EBGs'. Switchable and tunable notch band UWB filters are proposed.

A 1.1-m reflectarray antenna has been designed, manufactured, and tested to fulfill the requirements of a satellite antenna in Ku-band that provides South-American coverage in Tx and Rx. The reflectarray cells consist of four dipoles for each polarization in two dielectric layers, selected because of their simplicity and high performance. The dipole dimensions are optimized in all the reflectarray cells to accomplish the prescribed radiation patterns, by iteratively calling an analysis routine based on method of moments in spectral domain and local periodicity. The measured radiation patterns of the manufactured antenna have been satisfactorily compared with simulations and with a three-layer reflectarray previously designed, manufactured, and tested for the same mission.

A simple multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with quad-band-notched characteristics for ultra-wideband (UWB) system is proposed and tested in the article. Based on two similar radiators, the UWB-MIMO system only occupies 22 mm × 28 mm. By etching an inverted L-like meander slot, two inverted L-shaped slots, and adding a C-shaped stub beside the feeding line, four notched bands are realized (3.25–3.6, 5.05–5.48, 5.6–6, and 7.8–8.4 GHz) to suppress interference from WiMAX, lower WLAN, upper WLAN, and uplink of X-band satellite communication system. With a T-like stub extruding from the ground plane, port isolation is effectively improved. The results show that the antenna covers 3.1–10.6 GHz UWB frequency band except four rejected bands and has high isolation of better than −20 dB over most of the frequency band. Moreover, envelope correlation coefficient and good radiation patterns also prove that the introduced antenna is suitable for UWB applications.

We present here a new set of equations for modeling the I–V characteristics of Field Effects Transistors (FETs), particularly optimized for AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. These equations describe the whole characteristics from negative to positive breakdown loci, and reproduce the current saturation at high level. Using this model enables to decrease the modeling process duration when a same transistor topology is used for several applications in a T/R module. It can even be used for switches design, which is the most demanding application in terms of I–V swing. Moreover, particular care was taken to accurately model the first third orders of the current derivatives, which is important for multione applications. We also focused on an accurate definition of the nonlinear elements such as capacitances for power applications. There are 18 parameters for the main current source (and six for both diodes Igs and Igd). This can be compared to Tajima's equations-based model (13 parameters) or to the Angelov model (14 parameters), which only fit the I–V characteristics for positive values of Vds. We will detail here the model formulation, and show some measurements/modeling comparisons on both I–V, [S]-parameters and temporal load-pull obtained for a 8 × 75 μm GaN HEMT, with 0.25 μm gate length.

This paper presents a compact broadband printed monopole antenna with U-shaped slit in the partial ground plane and rectangular parasitic patches adjacent to the microstrip line for multiple applications. The optimal dimensions of the proposed antenna are 35 × 25 × 1.5 mm3 and is fabricated on commercially available low-cost FR4 substrate with εr = 4.3 and 0.025 loss tangent. Due to introduction of rectangular parasitic patches and U-shaped slit large bandwidth has been achieved. The impedance bandwidth (return loss, magnitude of S11 < 10 dB) of the proposed antenna is 139% (2.9–16.3 GHz). The proposed antenna covers ultra wide band applications, 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands, 3.5/5.5 GHz WiMAX bands, X band (8–12 GHz), satellite communication, and other wireless communication services. The study shows that there is good agreement in simulated and measured results. Nearly stable radiation patterns have been obtained throughout the operating band. Antenna results and details are discussed and elaborated.

This paper presents a novel technology for the implementation of substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) structures, based on a paper substrate and realized by an inkjet-printing fabrication process. The use of paper permits to implement low-cost microwave structures and components, by adopting a completely eco-friendly implementation technology. SIW structures appear particularly suitable for implementation on paper, due to the possibility to easily realize multilayered topologies and conformal geometries. In this paper, SIW passive components, and antennas (including straight interconnects, band-pass filters, and slotted-waveguide antennas) are proposed for the first time. The design of the components, the steps of the fabrication process, and the experimental characterization of the prototypes are reported in this paper.

The research on the design of receiver front-ends for very high data-rate communication in the 60 GHz band in nanoscale Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technologies is going on for some time now. Although a multitude of 60 GHz front-ends have been published in recent years, they are not consequently optimized for low power consumption. Thus, these front-ends dissipate too much power for battery-powered applications like handheld devices, mobile phones, and wireless sensor networks. This article describes the design of a direct conversion receiver front-end that addresses the issue of power consumption, while at the same time permitting low cost (due to area minimization by the use of spiral inductors). It is implemented in a 65 nm CMOS technology. The realized front-end achieves a record power consumption of only 43 mW including low-noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), a local oscillator (LO) buffer, and a baseband buffer (without this latter buffer the power consumption is even lower, only 29 mW). Its pad-limited size is 0.55 × 1 mm2. At the same time, the front-end achieves state-of-the-art performance with respect to its other properties: Its maximum measured power conversion gain is 30 dB, the RF and IF bandwidths are 56.5–61.5 and 0–1.5 GHz, respectively, its measured minimum noise figure is 9.2 dB, and its measured IP−1 dB is −36 dBm.

Fifth-generation technology is not fully deployed in the world wireless communication till date. Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band needs to be used due to plenty of available bandwidth and for achieving the goals of 5G such as greater data rate, ultra-high-speed video broadcasting, low latency services, and many more. Wideband antenna is required for 5G applications to access the high speed, low latency Internet services, and ultra-high-definition video streaming. Various bandwidth enhancement techniques have been reported by the researchers for microstrip antennas operating at microwave bands. High link losses, small wavelength, limited coverage, and environmental losses are the major challenges of mm-wave band. To mitigate these issues and satisfy 5G standard, an antenna with wide bandwidth, high gain, narrow steerable beam, high isolation, low side lobe levels, and multiband characteristics is required. Modifications in conventional antenna design techniques are required to achieve broader bandwidth along with stable radiation characteristics, improved gain, and low side lobe levels at mm-wave frequencies. This paper presents the survey of various bandwidth enhancement techniques which has been used in the 5G antennas designed by researchers. Reviews of some wideband 5G antennas with their performance comparisons are also discussed.

Asymmetric slits loaded irregular shaped microstrip patch antenna with three different ground structures is proposed. All three antennas show triple band characteristics. First antenna with regular ground plane resonates at 1.95, 2.4, and 4.90 GHz with good radiation characteristics and shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.95 GHz. 18.75% of compactness is achieved with triple band characteristics. Further, same patch is used with different defected ground structures. Second antenna resonates at 1.85, 2.4, and 4.85 GHz with suppressed cross-polarization level and antenna shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.85 and 4.85 GHz. Compactness is further improved to the value of 22.91%. The third antenna resonates at 1.95, 2.4, and 4.85 GHz with better gain and radiation characteristics and antenna shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.95 and 2.4 GHz. The small frequency ratio f2/f1 is achieved and the value of f2/f1 is 1.29 and 1.23 for second and third configuration, respectively. Proposed structures show right-hand circularly polarized with suppressed left-hand circularly polarized radiations and suitable for fixed mobile wireless communication applications. All structures are analyzed using Ansoft HFSS v.14 based on finite element method and measured results satisfy the simulated results.

Two localization algorithms for multilateration systems are derived and analyzed. Instead of the classical time difference of arrival (TDOA), a direct use of the time of arrival (TOA) is made. The algorithms work for arbitrary spatial dimensions and overdetermined systems. These derivations are tested in a real-case implementation with simulated data (in particular, the multilateration (MLAT) system installed on the Malpensa Airport in Milan was considered for the MLAT simulation and its possible extension to wide area multilateration (WAM) system was considered for WAM trials). The results are also compared with the present-day algorithms performance, mostly based on TDOA.

Fractal geometries are attractive for antenna designers seeking antennas with compact size and multiband resonant behavior. This paper presents the design of a new microstrip-fed printed slot antenna for use in dual-band wireless applications. The slot structure of the proposed antenna is in the form of Cantor square fractal geometry of the second iteration. The slot structure has been etched on the ground plane of a substrate with relative permittivity of 4.4 and 1.6 mm in thickness. A parametric study is conducted to explore the effects of some geometrical parameters on the antenna performance. Results show that the antenna possesses a dual-band behavior with a wide range of resonant frequency ratio. In addition to the ease of fabrication and simple design procedure, the antenna offers desirable radiation characteristics. A prototype of the proposed antenna has been simulated, fabricated, and measured. The measured 10 dB return loss bandwidths for the lower and the upper resonant bands are 42% (2.35–3.61 GHz) and 20% (5.15–6.25 GHz), respectively. This makes the proposed antenna suitable to cover a number of operating bands of wireless systems (2.4 GHz-Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz ISM, 2.4/5.8 GHz-WLAN, 3.5 GHz-WiMAX, and 5.8 GHz-ITS).

The design and analysis of meta-material inspired loaded monopole antenna for multiband operation are reported. The proposed antenna consists of multi resonators inspired from half mode composite right/left handed cells, which has a simple structure, compact size, and provides multiband functionalities. As a proof of concept, a triple band antenna covering all possible WiMAX operating bands, has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The hosting monopole patch itself generates resonance for 3.3–3.8 GHz band, whereas the loaded metamaterial cells add extra resonance frequencies. The loading of two resonator cells introduces two extra resonances for 2.5–2.7 GHz and 5.3–5.9 GHz bands, respectively. The antenna's operating principle and design procedures with the aid of electromagnetic full wave simulation and experimental measurements are presented. The antenna has good omnidirectional patterns at all three bands. The monopole patch size is 13.5 × 6.5 mm2 and the whole antenna size (including the feed line) is 35 × 32 mm2. Compared with conventional single band microstrip patch radiator, the radiator size of this antenna is only 8.5% at 2.5 GHz, 17% at 3.5 GHz, and 37% at 5.5 GHz.

This paper describes a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system using low-cost radar (5–6 GHz), position (GNSS/RTK) and attitude (IMU) sensors for the generation of high-resolution images. Measurements using straight as well as highly curved flight trajectories and varying flight speeds are presented, showing range and cross-range lobe-widths close to the theoretical limits. An analysis of the improvements obtained by the use of attitude angles (roll, pitch, and yaw), to correct for the relative offsets in antenna positions as the UAV moves, is included. A capability to generate SAR images onboard with the back-projection algorithm has been implemented using a GPU accelerated single-board computer. Generated images are transmitted to ground using a Wi-Fi data link.

A novel coplanar waveguide-fed Z-monopole antennas are proposed for the first time for a industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band (2.4–2.48 GHz) applications. To make the designed antenna suitable for implantation, it is embedded in biocompatible Al2O3 ceramic substrate. The antenna operates at resonance frequency of 2.45 GHz to support wide band communication for high data rate implantable neural monitoring application. The size of the antenna is 38.675 mm3 (8.5 mm × 7 mm × 0.65 mm). The antenna was simulated and measured by immersing it in a phantom liquid, imitate the electrical properties of the human body phantom liquid. The simulated and measured bandwidths are 10.2 and 11.4% at the centre frequency. A study of the sensitivity of the antenna performance as a function of its dielectric parameters of the environment in which it is immersed was performed. The demonstration among the design EM characteristics of the antenna is presented by current distributions.

In this paper, a novel compact microstrip low-pass filter (LPF) with ultra wide stop band and sharp roll off, is proposed. In the proposed structure, a high impedance transmission line is loaded by compact microstrip resonant cells, which results in ultra wide stopband. The −3 dB cut-off frequency of filter is 1.5 GHz and the maximum insertion loss is <0.1 dB in the passband. The proposed LPF presents extremely wide stopband from 1.68 to 44 GHz, with more than the −20 dB attenuation level, which suppresses the 2nd to 29th harmonics with high rejection levels. The size of the proposed LPF is only 0.1 λg × 0.19 λg, which shows excellent size reduction. There is a good agreement between the simulated and measured results.

This paper presents a new class of quasi-elliptic pass-band filters in substrate-integrated waveguide technology, which exhibits compact size and modular geometry. These filters are based on mushroom-shaped metallic resonators, and they can be easily implemented using a standard dual-layer printed circuit board manufacturing process. The presented filters exploit non-resonating modes to obtain coupling between non-adjacent nodes in the case of in-line geometry. The resulting structure is very compact and capable of transmission zeros. In this work, the singlet configuration is preliminarily investigated, and a parametric study is performed. The design of three-pole, four-pole, and higher-order filters is illustrated with examples and thoroughly discussed. A four-pole filter operating at the frequency of 4 GHz has been manufactured and experimentally verified, to validate the proposed technique.
