By an E-unitary inverse semigroup we mean an inverse semigroup in which the semilattice is a unitary subset. Such semigroups, elsewhere called ‘proper’ or ‘reduced’ inverse semigroups, have been the object of much recent study. Free inverse semigroups form a subclass of particular interest.

An important structure theorem for E-unitary inverse semigroups has been obtained by McAlister [4, 5]. From a triple (G, ) consisting of a group G, a partially ordered set and a subset , satisfying certain conditions, he constructs an E-unitary inverse semigroup P(G, ). A semigroup of this type is called a P-semigroup. The structure theorem states that every E-unitary inverse semigroup is, to within isomorphism, of this form. A second theorem asserts that every inverse semigroup is isomorphic to a quotient of a Psemigroup by an idempotent-separating congruence. We refer below to these results as McAlister's Theorems A and B respectively. A triple (C, ) of the type used to construct a P-semigroup is here termed a “McAlister triple”. It is shown further, in [5], that there is essentially only one such triple corresponding to a given E-unitary inverse semigroup.

Let be a C*-algebra acting on the Hilbert space H and let be the self-adjoint elements of . The following characterization of commutativity is due to I. Kaplansky (see Dixmier [3, p. 58]).

This paper deals with some non-linear initial-boundary value problems under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in which the solutions may blow up in finite time. Using a first-order differential inequality technique, lower bounds for blow-up time are determined.

We consider the equation over a finite field q of q elements, with variables from arbitrary sets . The question of solvability of such and more general equations has recently been considered by Hart and Iosevich, who, in particular, prove that if for some absolute constant C > 0, then above equation has a solution for any λ ∈ q*. Here we show that using bounds of multiplicative character sums allows us to extend the class of sets which satisfy this property.

The translational hull Ω(S) of a semigroup S plays an important role in the theory of ideal extensions of semigroups. In fact, every ideal extension of S by a semigroup T with zero can be constructed using a certain partial homomorphism of T\0 into Ω(S); a particular case of interest is when S is weakly reductive (see §4.4 of [3], [2], [7]). A theorem of Gluskin [6, 1.7.1] states that if S is a weakly reductive semigroup and a densely embedded ideal of a semigroup Q, then Q and Ω(S) are isomorphic. A number of papers of Soviet mathematicians deal with the abstract characteristic (abstract semigroup, satisfying certain conditions, isomorphic to the given semigroup) of various classes of (partial) transformation semigroups in terms of densely embedded ideals (see, e.g., [4]). In many of the cases studied, the densely embedded ideal in question is a completely 0-simple semigroup, so that Gluskin's theorem mentioned above applies. This enhances the importance of the translational hull of a weakly reductive, and in particular of a completely 0-simple semigroup. Gluskin [5] applied the theory of densely embedded ideals (which are completely 0-simple semigroups) also to semigroups and rings of endomorphisms of a linear manifold and to certain classes of abstract rings.

In two previous papers [1], [2] the confluent form

We prove that sufficiently separated sequences are interpolating sequences for f′(z)(1−|z|2) where f is a Bloch function. If the sequence {zn} is an η net then the boundedness f′(z)(1−|z|2) on {zn} is a sufficient condition for f to be a Bloch function. The essential norm of a Hankel operator with a conjugate analytic symbol acting on the Bergman space is shown to be equivalent to .

In a previous paper in this journal [1], I gave formulae for determining the coefficients in certain dual trigonometrical series. The derivation of these formulae involved rather sophisticated assumptions and some intricate manipulation of the hypergeometric function and relied heavily on the solution of Schlömilch's integral equation. I have now found a much simpler formal solution by using Mehler's integral representation of the Legendre polynomial and the final formulae for the coefficients can be given in a more attractive form. As the results of my previous work have had several recent applications to physical problems, it seems worth while to give some details of this improved solution.

Let A be a Banach algebra with unit 1 and let B be a Banach algebra which is a subalgebra of A and which contains 1. In [5]Barnes gave sufficient conditions for B to be inverse closed in A. In this paper we consider single elements and study the question of how the spectrum relative to B of an element in B relates to the spectrum of the element relative to A.

Let k be any algebraically closed field, and denote by k((t)) the field of formal power series in one indeterminate t over k. Let

so that K is the field of Puiseux expansions with coefficients in k (each element of K is a formal power series in tl/r for some positive integer r). It is well-known that K is algebraically closed if and only if k is of characteristic zero [1, p. 61]. For examples relating to ramified extensions of fields with valuation [9, §6] it is useful to have a field analogous to K which is algebraically closed when k has non-zero characteristic p. In this paper, I prove that the set L of all formal power series of the form Σaitei (where (ei) is well-ordered, ei = mi|nprt, n ∈ Ζ, mi ∈ Ζ, ai ∈ k, ri ∈ Ν) forms an algebraically closed field.

The relation ℒ* is defined on a semigroup S by the rule that a ℒ*b if and only if the elements a, b of S are related by Green's relation ℒ in some oversemigroup of S. A semigroup S is an E-semigroup if its set E(S) of idempotents is a subsemilattice of S. A right adequate semigroup is an E-semigroup in which every ℒ*-class contains an idempotent. It is easy to see that, in fact, each ℒ*-class of a right adequate semigroup contains a unique idempotent [8]. We denote the idempotent in the ℒ*-class of a by a*. Then we may regard a right adequate semigroup as an algebra with a binary operation of multiplication and a unary operation *. We will refer to such algebras as *-semigroups. In [10], it is observed that viewed in this way the class of right adequate semigroups is a quasi-variety.

The purpose of this paper is to present a proof of the following theorem of Maclagan-Wedderburn.*

Every finite skew-field† is a field.

The proof depends on group theory and on the properties of Galois fields. As an introduction, §§1–4 are devoted to a systematic and self-contained account of the theory of Galois fields.

In this paper we introduce the notion of weak zip rings and investigate their properties. We mainly prove that a ring R is right (left) weak zip if and only if for any n, the n-by-n upper triangular matrix ring Tn(R) is right (left) weak zip. Let α be an endomorphism and δ an α-derivation of a ring R. Then R is a right (left) weak zip ring if and only if the skew polynomial ring R[x; α, δ] is a right (left) weak zip ring when R is (α, δ)-compatible and reversible.

J. H. E. Cohn solved the diophantine equations x2 + 74 = yn and x2 + 86 = yn, with the condition 5 ∤ n, by more or less elementary methods. We complete this work by solving these equations for 5 | n, by less elementary methods.

In this paper, we establish a number of Lp-affine isoperimetric inequalities for Lp-geominimal surface area. In particular, we obtain a Blaschke–Santaló type inequality and a cyclic inequality between different Lp-geominimal surface areas of a convex body.
