The southwestern part of Naples was the site of small volume volcanic activity prior to 12000 y B.P. Lava domes and possibly a lava flow were erupted during the earliest period. Explosive activity followed and produced pyroclastic sequences that are the proximal deposits of tuff cones within the city and at its southwestern extreme. The explosive activity was complex but predominantly phreatomagmatic. As the volcanic activity more than 12000 y B.P. in western Campi Flegrei shows a similar evolution from effusive to explosive, it is suggested that a large volcanic field ‘Paleoflegrei’, encompassing the western part of the city of Naples, existed prior to emplacement of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff. The Neapolitan Yellow Tuff eruption about 12000 y B.P., from a vent in Campi Flegrei, produced widespread deposits up to 150 m thick that blanketed the area of the city of Naples, although the present day topography is strongly influenced by the pre-Neapolitan Yellow Tuff centres. Following the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff a small explosive eruption occurred in the bay of Chiaia, immediately south of the city, and results in the possibility of future eruptions within the city of Naples, outside the confines of Campi Flegrei and Vesuvius.

A graphical method for the analysis of the orientation of planar and linear structural elements in drill core is presented. Simple computation and projection operations applied to data taken from elements traced on the cylindrical surface of the core are required. To know a structural element(s) of reference, the method requires detailed structural analysis of the surface geology around the drill hole.

The geochemistry of Tertiary igneous rocks from Arran, western Scotland, provides a probe for the structure of the crust in the region of the Highland Boundary Fault (HBF). New Nd isotope data, coupled with other geochemical evidence, point to variable contamination of primitive mantle-derived magmas during magmatic differentiation in the crust. Two different isotopic contamination trends are seen. The northern granite was generated by contamination of basic differentiates by crust resembling exposed Dalradian units. Data for the central granite, and several other minor intrusions from south of the HBF, trend towards the reported isotopic signatures of granulite-facies xenoliths from the Midland Valley. However, quartz porphyry intrusions in the south of the island are compositionally similar to the nothern granite, and were probably intruded southwards across the HBF in dykes. Hence the isotopic signatures of the Tertiary intrusions reflect the different character of the crustal units on either side of the fault.

Veins of solid bitumen occur in Cretaceous sandstones at the northwest margin of the Junggar Basin, China. The bitumen has a low aromaticity and a composition comparable to gilsonite. The bitumen contains abundant steranes and terpanes, and β-carotane, although most n- and i- alkanes have been removed, which is characteristic of the local crude oil. The sterane and triterpane maturity parameters show that the bitumen, local crude oil, and source rocks are all mature. Bitumen–wallrock relationships suggest that the host sandstone was not completely consolidated at the time of emplacement of the bitumen veins, although bitumen emplacement was a relatively late diagenetic event. The burial history for the northwest Junggar Basin shows that hydrocarbon generation from the assumed upper Permian source rocks commenced in late Triassic/early Jurassic times and suggests that rapid hydrocarbon generation may have resulted in overpressure contributing to the bitumen emplacement.

The Troodos Massif of Cyprus exposes a classic and much-studied ophiolite sequence representing oceanic crust of Late Cretaceous age. K-Ar dating of the sheeted dykes and of the overlying pillow lavas gives a range of 83±3 Ma (earliest Campanian) and 75±5 Ma (late Campanian) respectively for the formation of the upper levels of the ophiolite. An autochthonous sequence of Late Cretaceous to Recent age sediments is exposed resting on the ophiolite, the oldest part of which reflects sedimentation in an apparently deep marine, oceanic setting. Little biostratigraphical information is available to constrain the chronostratigraphy of these sediments in relation to the complex geological history of the island, including the uplift and unroofing of the ophiolite, despite their richness in microfauna and flora. This paper provides an integrated biostratigraphical study based on radiolaria, planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils of the oldest part of the supra-ophiolite succession, of the Cretaceous Perapedhi, Kannaviou, Moni and Kathikas formations. For the first time, well-defined micropalaeontological evidence establishes the relative ages of these formations. The umbers of the Perapedhi formation are no younger than Campanian in age while the volcaniclastic sediments of the Kannaviou formation were also deposited during Campanian times. The matrix of the Moni formation contains a microfauna consistent with the hypothesis that it is derived from the Kannaviou. In contrast, the Kathikas formation is composed of sediment derived mainly from the allochthonous Mamonia complex, but autochthonous pelagic interbed horizons demonstrate that it was deposited probably within a very short time interval during the late Maastrichtian. Key index species are figured, including the first published micrographs of Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera from Cyprus.

In 1967 the Somerset coastline near Watchet was proposed as the type area of the basal (Planorbis) chronozone of the Hettangian Stage and thus of the Jurassic System. Neither at that time nor subsequently, however, has a type locality and section been nominated from those available in the area. There is urgent need to select a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Hettangian, and of the Jurassic System. The cliff forming the headland at the west side of St Audrie's Bay, three kilometres east of Watchet, Somerset, is here proposed as the type locality and section, with the base of the Hettangian Stage, at the base of the Planorbis Chronozone, being placed at the horizon currently recognized as that at which ammonites of the genus Psiloceras appear. In this section the base of the Planorbis Chronozone corresponds with the base of the Psiloceras planorbis Biozone. The proposal of this section is conditioned by the availability of comprehensive litho- and biostratigraphic information, and the ability of the section to fulfil International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) requirements for a candidate GSSP.

Radiolaria were examined throughout the Plio-Pleistocene of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 609. Eight radiolarian datum-levels (first and last appearances) were identified, some for the first time in the North Atlantic. The recognition of these datums allows correlation between the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, through a previously published zonal scheme (Johnson et al. 1989). Zones NR1 to NR11 were recognized, although some zones had to be combined (NR1–2 and NR8–10) due to the absence of some stratigraphically important taxa. The relative abundance distribution of the radiolarian palaeoceanographical proxy Didymocyrtis tetrathalamus indicated three cool phases (0/0.56–0.75 Ma, 1.2–1.33/1.69–1.86 Ma, and 2.14–2.32/3.73– > 4.1 Ma) interrupted by two relatively warm episodes (0.56–0.75/1.2–1.33 Ma and 1.69–1.86/2.14–2.35 Ma). These fluctuations in sea-surface temperature (SST) correspond with palaeoclimatic events indicated by other proxies (e.g. Foraminifera), such as the onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation. This study illustrates the usefulness of radiolaria in North Atlantic stratigraphical and palaeoceanographical analysis.

We report the discovery of a dinosaur assemblage in the non-marine Late Maastrichtian of the Corbieres region of southern France; this allows the reconstruction of the succession of dinosaur faunas during the Maastrichtian in western Europe. An Early Maastrichtian fauna dominated by titanosaurid sauropods was replaced by a Late Maastrichtian assemblage dominated by hadrosaurs. This important faunal replacement seems to coincide with environmental changes (documented by sedimentological and palynological evidence) which have been linked to a marine regression during the Maastrichtian. This suggests that sea-level changes influenced the evolution of dinosaur faunas in Europe during the Late Cretaceous, but were not sufficient to cause the final extinction of dinosaurs, for which other causes must be sought.

Lithostratigraphic units of early to late Cambrian age established by T. C. Nicholas in 1915 in the St Tudwal's Peninsula are revised. They comprise, in ascending order: Hell's Mouth Formation (> 190 m); Trwyn y Fulfran Formation (37 m);Cilan Formation (400 m); Ceiriad Formation (40 m seen); Nant-y-big Formation (> 110 m seen); Maentwrog Formation (in part, 50 m seen, an estimated 250 m concealed); Ffestiniog Flags Formation (in part, c. 120m seen). The ‘calcareous grit’ at the top of Nicholas's Nant-pig Mudstones spans the unconformable boundary between the Nant-y-big and Maentwrog formations. Previously described limestone clasts in the ‘grit’ are probably erosional remnants of an in situ bioclastic limestone bed; their contained trilobites include genera and species found in the Andrarum Limestone (late Middle Cambrian) of Scania, Sweden. Acritarchs are documented and compared particularly with those from eastern Newfound-land. Those from the highest part of the ‘calcareous grit’ include Cymatiogalea sp. and are of late Cambrian age. One new species, Heliosphaeridium? llynense Martin, comes from the lower part of the Nant-y-big Formation (middle Middle Cambrian), where it appears a little earlier than the Adara alea Biozone.

A sparse but moderately diverse nannoflora is recorded through the Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary Event (CTBE) at Menoyo, Spain and allows recognition of the late Cenomanian Eiffellithus turriseiffelii Zone and the early Turonian Quadrum gartneri Zone, as well as five significant nannofossil bioevents associated with the CTBE. Carbon isotopes record a modest excursion which lasted 250–270 thousand years (ka) in three phases, buildup (105 ka), plateau (126 ka) and recovery (42 ka). Acid insoluble residue values imply that sea level rose through the buildup phase, indicated by a reduction in the accumulation rate of siliciclastic sediment. However, oceanic productivity apparently declined through the CTBE, indicated by reduction in accumulation rates of total carbonate and intact coccoliths to less than a quarter of their initial values. These patterns are very similar to those found through the CTBE at Dover, England and reflect widespread not local effects. A combination of lithological changes, seven key bioevents, and details of the δ13C curve, allows us to suggest a bed-by-bed correlation through the CTBE between Dover and Menoyo, demonstrating the practicality of cyclostratigraphy for international correlation at a precision of ± 10 ka. Graphic correlation produces a straight line fit despite wide fluctuations in sediment accumulation rates at both localities. This can only occur if changes were in phase and of similar magnitudes at both localities, again suggesting widespread, perhaps global, control.

The gross geometries exhibited by crustal-scale fold nappes are considered a consequence of both original stratigraphic relationships associated with sub-basin configuration, coupled with the nature of the structural regime and tectonic processes involved in the generation of the nappe pile. The Neo-Proterozoic Dalradian metasediments of northwestern Ireland provide a well-constrained and correlatable stratigraphy which defines a sequence of sub-reclined, tight-isoclinal Caledonian (c. 460 Ma) fold nappes. Within this fold complex, the dominant structure is the crustal-scale Ballybofey Nappe, which may be traced for 40 km along strike and is responsible for a regional (500 km2) stratigraphie inversion. The gentle, NE-plunging attitude of this fold results in a complete spectrum of tectonic levels and deformation gradients being exposed. Relatively low strains in the upper fold limb gradually increase down through the nappe, resulting in the generation of composite foliations and lineations and the development of a 10 km thick shear zone which culminates in a high strain basal detachment with underlying pre-Caledonian basement. The Ballybofey Nappe nucleated and propagated along a major zone of lateral sedimentary facies variation, coincident with the margin of a major Dalradian sub-basin. The large amplitude of the nappe is strongly influenced by the lateral heterogeneity within the metasedimentary sequence, and is associated with a minimum of 25–30 km ESE-directed translation concentrated within the overturned limb. Additional significant displacement is also focused along the basal décollement. Generation of the nappe complex resulted in significant crustal thickening and amphibolite facies metamorphism consistent with 15–18 km of burial, induced by a sequence of nappes propagating in the direction of overshear. The ESE-directed translation of the major fold nappes is away from the Caledonian foreland and a gravity-driven mechanism of nappe emplacement is suggested. Rigorous structural analysis within the cohesive stratigraphie framework enables relationships between the tectonic evolution and stratigraphic patterns to be distinguished, thus allowing models of fold nappe generation and mid-crustal deformation to be evaluated.

Correlations between the Silurian successions of Gotland and the East Baltic are based on the narrowest stratigraphic units that can be distinguished in both areas. In order further to increase precision, true ends of ranges in measured sections have been used instead of ‘pooled’ formational faunas, where outcrops and collections permit. Some previous correlations are confirmed. In other cases, there are considerable changes both in levels of correlation and in precision. The major differences are found mostly when one or more of the major gaps have remained unrecognized and stratigraphic units therefore have been extended and translated upwards or downwards. At least some of these gaps decrease in magnitude southwards in Estonia. Gaps at these levels are also noted on Gotland, although they are small and probably do not extend across the island. The patterns through time of deposition (during secundo episodes) and gaps (during primo episodes) agree very well with what can be predicted from a model of oceanic and climatic cyclicity.

All bentonite and bentonite-resembling layers thicker than a few millimetres from a 120m-thick Early Silurian sequence on Gotland, Sweden, were searched for shocked quartz grains of comet or asteroid impact origin. Although more than 200000 quartz grains from 86 bentonite samples were studied, not one single grain with multiple planar shock features was found. The studied sequence represents sedimentation during a period of about 2 million years. Impact frequencies, estimated from the cratering record and astronomical observations, indicate that during a 2-myr- period on average 20 comet or asteroid bodies larger than 0.5 km in diameter strike the Earth. The number of smaller impacting bodies is many times higher. In the light of this high frequency of impacts, the absence of any shocked-quartz-bearing fallout layer in our sequence indicates that lateral spreading of such ejecta is relatively restricted during small- and medium-scale impact events.

The results also show that shocked quartz in general is absent or extremely rare in volcanic ash. This strengthens the case for an impact-related origin of shocked quartz grains in the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary days.

The early Miocene sedimentary succession in the northeast-southwest trending Gördes basin is 1000 m thick and divided into the Daĝdere, Tepeköy and Kuşlukköy formations. The age of this fill can be constrained as between 24.2 Ma and 16.3 Ma, at its widest interval. Paleocurrent directions from south to north demonstrate that the basin had a north dipping basin floor. These observations are inconsistent with a previous model of the Gordes basin as a cross graben with a south dipping basin floor, towards the Alaşehir graben, and an anomalously thick (up to 3000 m) basin filling.

The geometry and kinematic evolution of a frontal ramp section associated with the Tertiary West Spitsbergen Orogenic Belt has been investigated in a small area (Lappdalen) north of Isfjorden. The previously recognized thrust front corresponds to a complex step or ramp in the position of the sole-thrust in the area. The sole-thrust is localized to the evaporites of the Permian Gipshuken Formation to the west of the footwall ramp, whereas to the east it continues as a bedding-parallel thrust in Triassic shales (Sassendalen Group). The area to the west of the footwall ramp is characterized by large scale thrusts and folds involving the Permian Gipshuken and Kapp Starostin formations and the lower part of the Triassic Sassendalen Group. East of the footwall ramp both Permian and Triassic strata are sub-horizontal and apparently undeformed. Three major thrust sheets are recognized. Based on the geometric relationship between folds and faults in the area, both fault-bend and fault-propogation mechanisms of folding are inferred. Restoration of the Kapp Starostin Formation to its pre-deformational state indicates a minimum of 35% shortening. Structural observations within the Sassendalen Group in the study area and on Dickson Land suggest that some of this shortening is transmitted eastwards along one or more bedding parallel thrusts in the Sassendalen Group.

The transition from the carbonate to the flysch facies in the Arachova sequence of the Parnassus-Ghiona Zone is represented by argillaceous limestone beds with flaser structures deposited during latest Maastrichtian-Palaeocene time in a pelagic carbonate environment with a periodic clastic influx. Deposition was continuous except for a short interruption during the K/T boundary interval and the earliest Palaeocene when the area was subaerially exposed. This interruption gave rise to the development of a brecciated carbonate horizon through soil-forming processes. The mineralogical composition of the clastic influx (i.e. quartz, feldspars, clay minerals, amorphous iron oxides, amorphous phosphatic compounds), in particular the clay mineral assemblages (i.e. illite, chlorite, irregularly interstratified illite-vermiculite), shows that the clastic supply represents erosional material that originated from a tectonically active continental setting of both carbonate and clastic rocks, presumably the Pelagonian Zone, as for the flysch of the Beotian and Sub-Pelagonian Zones. The arrival of the first clastic material in the Arachova area as early as latest Maastrichtian time, its Pelagonian origin and the persistence of pelagic conditions of sedimentation throughout the Palaeocene, indicate that the Arachova area was situated along the northeastern margin of the Parnassus platform and that it subsided into the Beotian basin. While the central areas of the platform remained tectonically stable during middle Palaeocene times and there was an extensive development of stromatolites, the northeastern marginal areas transitional to the Beotian basin continued to subside allowing pelagic carbonate sedimentation with periods of clastic influx. The total collapse of the platform in the late Palaeocene gave rise to the deposition of the flysch over the entire zone.

An assemblage of fossil plants is here recorded from the Middle Devonian Beacon Heights Orthoquartzite and overlying Aztec Siltstone (Taylor Group), of the Cook Mountains and Skelton Névé regions, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The Beacon Heights Orthoquartzite exposed in the southern Cook Mountains yielded specimens of the lycopods Haplostigma lineare, Malanzania sp., and Archaeosigillaria sp. cf. A. caespitosa. The Aztec Siltstone flora contains Praeramunculus alternatiramus and H. lineare.

Two temnospondyl intercentra from non-marine middle Jurassic rocks at Mab Ching, in the southern peninsula of Thailand, are the first remains of post-Triassic labyrinthodont amphibians to be reported from the Shan-Thai block. They closely resemble an intercentrum recently reported from the middle Jurassic of the Khorat Plateau of northeastern Thailand, which is part of the Indochina block. Although the Mab Ching specimens are too fragmentary to warrant a precise identification, they confirm that temnospondyl amphibians were widespread on the various Asian continental blocks in the Jurassic.

The Ox Mountains granodiorite (western Ireland) is situated along the Fair Head—Clew Bay line, a major Caledonian structure. The pluton was emplaced synchronously with respect to deformation on a major strike-slip shear zone system and experienced a pervasive episode of sinistral shear. Remnants of magmatic state deformation such as phenocryst alignments and tiling fabrics are present. An early phase of strain partitioning produced sinistral offsets on internal contacts. These structures were overprinted by a solid state fabric characterized by crystal plastic deformation in feldspar and the operation of recovery processes during quartz deformation indicating temperatures in the range 450–500 °C. A sinistral shear band fabric is ubiquitous and its formation was enhanced by myrmekite production leading to the formation of fine-grained feldspar and quartz. Late deformation partitioning during further pluton cooling produced a conjugate shear zone system containing mylonites. Deformation within the Ox Mountains granodiorite provides important constraints on the nature of late Caledonian age mid-crustal deformation along the Highland Boundary fault. The pluton also provides exceptional examples of the range of structures that may form in a syntectonic pluton.

Conodont colour alteration data for the Lower Palaeozoic strata of the North Greenland carbonate platform indicate a pattern of increased thermal maturity northwards within the Franklinian Basin. There is little variation in values through the Canadian–Llandovery (Lower Ordovician–Lower Silurian) interval at any given locality. A simplified thermal model for the platform suggests that the predominant control of conodont colour alteration and thermal maturation was maximum depth of burial, which occurred during the mid- to late Silurian. A preliminary integrated scheme for conodont and organic thermal maturity indicators can be compiled from the data now available from North Greenland.
