By an assignment we mean a mapping from a Choquet simplex $K$ to probability measure-preserving systems obeying some natural restrictions. We prove that if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ is an aperiodic assignment on a Choquet simplex $K$ such that the set of extreme points $\mathsf{ex}K$ is a countable union $\bigcup _{n}E_{n}$, where each set $E_{n}$ is compact, zero-dimensional and the restriction of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ to the Bauer simplex $K_{n}$ spanned by $E_{n}$ can be ‘embedded’ in some topological dynamical system, then $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ can be ‘realized’ in a zero-dimensional system.

We study continuous countably (strictly) monotone maps defined on a tame graph, i.e. a special Peano continuum for which the set containing branch points and end points has countable closure. In our investigation we confine ourselves to the countable Markov case. We show a necessary and sufficient condition under which a locally eventually onto, countably Markov map $f$ of a tame graph $G$ is conjugate to a map $g$ of constant slope. In particular, we show that in the case of a Markov map $f$ that corresponds to a recurrent transition matrix, the condition is satisfied for a constant slope $e^{h_{\text{top}}(f)}$, where $h_{\text{top}}(f)$ is the topological entropy of $f$. Moreover, we show that in our class the topological entropy $h_{\text{top}}(f)$ is achievable through horseshoes of the map $f$.

We construct an infinite family of odd-symplectic forms (also known as Hamiltonian structures) on the $3$-sphere $S^{3}$ that do not admit a symplectic cobordism to the standard contact structure on $S^{3}$. This answers in the negative a question raised by Joel Fish motivated by the search for minimal characteristic flows.

Group actions on a Smale space and the actions induced on the $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras associated to such a dynamical system are studied. We show that an effective action of a discrete group on a mixing Smale space produces a strongly outer action on the homoclinic algebra. We then show that for irreducible Smale spaces, the property of finite Rokhlin dimension passes from the induced action on the homoclinic algebra to the induced actions on the stable and unstable $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras. In each of these cases, we discuss the preservation of properties (such as finite nuclear dimension, ${\mathcal{Z}}$-stability, and classification by Elliott invariants) in the resulting crossed products.

In the realm of Delone sets in locally compact, second countable Hausdorff groups, we develop a dynamical systems approach in order to study the continuity behavior of measured quantities arising from point sets. A special focus is both on the autocorrelation, as well as on the density of states for random bounded operators. It is shown that for uniquely ergodic limit systems, the latter measures behave continuously with respect to the Chabauty–Fell convergence of hulls. In the special situation of Euclidean spaces, our results complement recent developments in describing spectra as topological limits: we show that the measured quantities under consideration can be approximated via periodic analogs.

For a transcendental entire function $f$ of finite order in the Eremenko–Lyubich class ${\mathcal{B}}$, we give conditions under which the Lebesgue measure of the escaping set ${\mathcal{I}}(f)$ of $f$ is zero. This complements the recent work of Aspenberg and Bergweiler [Math. Ann. 352(1) (2012), 27–54], in which they give conditions on entire functions in the same class with escaping sets of positive Lebesgue measure. We will construct an entire function in the Eremenko–Lyubich class to show that the condition given by Aspenberg and Bergweiler is essentially sharp. Furthermore, we adapt our idea of proof to certain infinite-order entire functions. Under some restrictions to the growth of these entire functions, we show that the escaping sets have zero Lebesgue measure. This generalizes a result of Eremenko and Lyubich.

Suppose $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E})$ is a subshift, $P_{X}(n)$ is the word complexity function of $X$, and $\text{Aut}(X)$ is the group of automorphisms of $X$. We show that if $P_{X}(n)=o(n^{2}/\log ^{2}n)$, then $\text{Aut}(X)$ is amenable (as a countable, discrete group). We further show that if $P_{X}(n)=o(n^{2})$, then $\text{Aut}(X)$ can never contain a non-abelian free monoid (and, in particular, can never contain a non-abelian free subgroup). This is in contrast to recent examples, due to Salo and Schraudner, of subshifts with quadratic complexity that do contain such a monoid.

In this paper, we define the notion of monic representation for the $C^{\ast }$-algebras of finite higher-rank graphs with no sources, and we undertake a comprehensive study of them. Monic representations are the representations that, when restricted to the commutative $C^{\ast }$-algebra of the continuous functions on the infinite path space, admit a cyclic vector. We link monic representations to the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$-semibranching representations previously studied by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang and Packer (Separable representations, KMS states, and wavelets for higher-rank graphs. J. Math. Anal. Appl. 434 (2015), 241–270) and also provide a universal representation model for non-negative monic representations.

Let $\mathbf{M}=(M_{1},\ldots ,M_{k})$ be a tuple of real $d\times d$ matrices. Under certain irreducibility assumptions, we give checkable criteria for deciding whether $\mathbf{M}$ possesses the following property: there exist two constants $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}\in \mathbb{R}$ and $C>0$ such that for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and any $i_{1},\ldots ,i_{n}\in \{1,\ldots ,k\}$, either $M_{i_{1}}\cdots M_{i_{n}}=\mathbf{0}$ or $C^{-1}e^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}n}\leq \Vert M_{i_{1}}\cdots M_{i_{n}}\Vert \leq Ce^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}n}$, where $\Vert \cdot \Vert$ is a matrix norm. The proof is based on symbolic dynamics and the thermodynamic formalism for matrix products. As applications, we are able to check the absolute continuity of a class of overlapping self-similar measures on $\mathbb{R}$, the absolute continuity of certain self-affine measures in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and the dimensional regularity of a class of sofic affine-invariant sets in the plane.

A crossed product functor is said to be injective if it takes injective morphisms to injective morphisms. In this paper we show that every locally compact group $G$ admits a maximal injective crossed product $A\mapsto A\rtimes _{\text{inj}}G$. Moreover, we give an explicit construction of this functor that depends only on the maximal crossed product and the existence of $G$-injective $C^{\ast }$-algebras; this is a sort of ‘dual’ result to the construction of the minimal exact crossed product functor, the latter having been studied for its relationship to the Baum–Connes conjecture. It turns out that $\rtimes _{\text{inj}}$ has interesting connections to exactness, the local lifting property, amenable traces, and the weak expectation property.

We consider the transfer operators of non-uniformly expanding maps for potentials of various regularity, and show that a specific property of potentials (‘flatness’) implies a Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius theorem and a decay of the transfer operator of the same speed as that entailed by the constant potential. The method relies neither on Markov partitions nor on inducing, but on functional analysis and duality, through the simplest principles of optimal transportation. As an application, we notably show that for any map of the circle which is expanding outside an arbitrarily flat neutral point, the set of Hölder potentials exhibiting a spectral gap is dense in the uniform topology. The method applies in a variety of situations, including Pomeau–Manneville maps with regular enough potentials, or uniformly expanding maps of low regularity with their natural potential; we also recover in a united fashion variants of several previous results.

In this paper the notion of sub-exponential measure complexity for an invariant Borel probability measure of a topological dynamical system is introduced. Then a minimal distal skew product map on the torus with sub-exponential measure complexity is constructed.

We investigate the growth rate of the Birkhoff sums $S_{n,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}f(x)=\sum _{k=0}^{n-1}f(x+k\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})$, where $f$ is a continuous function with zero mean defined on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ and $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},x)$ is a ‘typical’ element of $\mathbb{T}^{2}$. The answer depends on the meaning given to the word ‘typical’. Part of the work will be done in a more general context.

We prove a lower bound on the difference between the spectral radius of the Cayley graph of a group $G$ and the spectral radius of the Schreier graph $H\backslash G$ for any subgroup $H$. As an application, we extend Kesten’s theorem on spectral radii to uniformly recurrent subgroups and give a short proof that the result of Lyons and Peres on cycle density in Ramanujan graphs [Lyons and Peres. Cycle density in infinite Ramanujan graphs. Ann. Probab.43(6) (2015), 3337–3358, Theorem 1.2] holds on average. More precisely, we show that if ${\mathcal{G}}$ is an infinite deterministic Ramanujan graph then the time spent in short cycles by a random trajectory of length $n$ is $o(n)$.

Let $f$ be a holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ of degree $d\geq 2$. We estimate the local directional dimensions of closed positive currents $S$ with respect to ergodic dilating measures $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$. We infer several applications. The first one is an upper bound for the lower pointwise dimension of the equilibrium measure, towards a Binder–DeMarco’s formula for this dimension. The second one shows that every current $S$ containing a measure of entropy $h_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}}>\log d$ has a directional dimension ${>}2$, which answers a question of de Thélin–Vigny in a directional way. The last one estimates the dimensions of the Green current of Dujardin’s semi-extremal endomorphisms.

We prove that every smooth diffeomorphism group valued cocycle over certain $\mathbb{Z}^{k}$ Anosov actions on tori (and more generally on infranilmanifolds) is a smooth coboundary on a finite cover, if the cocycle is center bunched and trivial at a fixed point. For smooth cocycles which are not trivial at a fixed point, we have smooth reduction of cocycles to constant ones, when lifted to the universal cover. These results on cocycle trivialization apply, via the existing global rigidity results, to maximal Cartan $\mathbb{Z}^{k}$ ($k\geq 3$) actions by Anosov diffeomorphisms (with at least one transitive), on any compact smooth manifold. This is the first rigidity result for cocycles over $\mathbb{Z}^{k}$ actions with values in diffeomorphism groups which does not require any restrictions on the smallness of the cocycle or on the diffeomorphism group.

We contribute to the thermodynamic formalism of partially hyperbolic attractors for local diffeomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. These include the case of attractors for Axiom A endomorphisms and partially hyperbolic endomorphisms derived from Anosov. We prove these attractors have finitely many SRB measures, that these are hyperbolic, and that the SRB measure is unique provided the dynamics is transitive. Moreover, we show that the SRB measures are statistically stable (in the weak$^{\ast }$ topology) and that their entropy varies continuously with respect to the local diffeomorphism.

We show that for almost every $(P,\unicode[STIX]{x1D706})$, where $P$ is a convex polygon and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}\in (0,1)$, the corresponding outer billiard about $P$ with contraction $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ is asymptotically periodic, i.e., has a finite number of periodic orbits and every orbit is attracted to one of them.

We consider a class of skew product maps of interval diffeomorphisms over the doubling map. The interval maps fix the end points of the interval. It is assumed that the system has zero fiber Lyapunov exponent at one endpoint and zero or positive fiber Lyapunov exponent at the other endpoint. We prove the appearance of on–off intermittency. This is done using the equivalent description of chaotic walks: random walks driven by the doubling map. The analysis further relies on approximating the chaotic walks by Markov random walks, that are constructed using Markov partitions for the doubling map.
