We study the finite versus infinite nature of C$^{\ast }$-algebras arising from étale groupoids. For an ample groupoid $G$, we relate infiniteness of the reduced C$^{\ast }$-algebra $\text{C}_{r}^{\ast }(G)$ to notions of paradoxicality of a K-theoretic flavor. We construct a pre-ordered abelian monoid $S(G)$ which generalizes the type semigroup introduced by Rørdam and Sierakowski for totally disconnected discrete transformation groups. This monoid characterizes the finite/infinite nature of the reduced groupoid C$^{\ast }$-algebra of $G$ in the sense that if $G$ is ample, minimal, topologically principal, and $S(G)$ is almost unperforated, we obtain a dichotomy between the stably finite and the purely infinite for $\text{C}_{r}^{\ast }(G)$. A type semigroup for totally disconnected topological graphs is also introduced, and we prove a similar dichotomy for these graph $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras as well.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:(X,T)\rightarrow (Y,S)$ be an extension between minimal systems; we consider its relative sensitivity. We obtain that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is relatively $n$-sensitive if and only if the relative $n$-regionally proximal relation contains a point whose coordinates are distinct; and the structure of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ which is relatively $n$-sensitive but not relatively $(n+1)$-sensitive is determined. Let ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$ be the families consisting of thick sets. We introduce notions of relative block ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitivity and relatively strong ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitivity. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:(X,T)\rightarrow (Y,S)$ be an extension between minimal systems. Then the following Auslander–Yorke type dichotomy theorems are obtained: (1) $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is either relatively block ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitive or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:(X,T)\rightarrow (X_{\text{eq}}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{\text{eq}})$ is a proximal extension where $(X_{\text{eq}}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{\text{eq}})\rightarrow (Y,S)$ is the maximal equicontinuous factor of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$. (2) $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is either relatively strongly ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitive or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:(X,T)\rightarrow (X_{d}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{d})$ is a proximal extension where $(X_{d}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{d})\rightarrow (Y,S)$ is the maximal distal factor of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$.

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for nuclearity of Cuntz–Nica–Pimsner algebras for a variety of quasi-lattice ordered groups. First we deal with the free abelian lattice case. We use this as a stepping-stone to tackle product systems over quasi-lattices that are controlled by the free abelian lattice and satisfy a minimality property. Our setting accommodates examples like the Baumslag–Solitar lattice for $n=m>0$ and the right-angled Artin groups. More generally, the class of quasi-lattices for which our results apply is closed under taking semi-direct and graph products. In the process we accomplish more. Our arguments tackle Nica–Pimsner algebras that admit a faithful conditional expectation on a small fixed point algebra and a faithful copy of the coefficient algebra. This is the case for CNP-relative quotients in-between the Toeplitz–Nica–Pimsner algebra and the Cuntz–Nica–Pimsner algebra. We complete this study with the relevant results on exactness.

Let $g:M\rightarrow M$ be a $C^{1+\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$-partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism preserving an ergodic normalized volume on $M$. We show that, if $f:M\rightarrow M$ is a $C^{1+\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$-Anosov diffeomorphism such that the stable subspaces of $f$ and $g$ span the whole tangent space at some point on $M$, the set of points that equidistribute under $g$ but have non-dense orbits under $f$ has full Hausdorff dimension. The same result is also obtained when $M$ is the torus and $f$ is a toral endomorphism whose center-stable subspace does not contain the stable subspace of $g$ at some point.

We introduce and study skew product Smale endomorphisms over finitely irreducible shifts with countable alphabets. This case is different from the one with finite alphabets and we develop new methods. In the conformal context we prove that almost all conditional measures of equilibrium states of summable Hölder continuous potentials are exact dimensional and their dimension is equal to the ratio of (global) entropy and Lyapunov exponent. We show that the exact dimensionality of conditional measures on fibers implies global exact dimensionality of the original measure. We then study equilibrium states for skew products over expanding Markov–Rényi transformations and settle the question of exact dimensionality of such measures. We apply our results to skew products over the continued fraction transformation. This allows us to extend and improve the Doeblin–Lenstra conjecture on Diophantine approximation coefficients to a larger class of measures and irrational numbers.

We show that if there exists a counter example for the rational case of the Franks–Misiurewicz conjecture, then it must exhibit unbounded deviations in the complementary direction of its rotation set.

Let $R$ be a ring of characteristic $0$ with field of fractions $K$ and let $m\geq 2$. The Böttcher coordinate of a power series $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(x)\in x^{m}+x^{m+1}R\unicode[STIX]{x27E6}x\unicode[STIX]{x27E7}$ is the unique power series $f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x)\in x+x^{2}K\unicode[STIX]{x27E6}x\unicode[STIX]{x27E7}$ satisfying $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}\circ f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x)=f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x^{m})$. In this paper we study the integrality properties of the coefficients of $f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x)$, partly for their intrinsic interest and partly for potential applications to $p$-adic dynamics. Results include: (1) if $p$ is prime and $R=\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(x)\in x^{p}+px^{p+1}R\unicode[STIX]{x27E6}x\unicode[STIX]{x27E7}$, then $f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x)\in R\unicode[STIX]{x27E6}x\unicode[STIX]{x27E7}$. (2) If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(x)\in x^{m}+mx^{m+1}R\unicode[STIX]{x27E6}x\unicode[STIX]{x27E7}$, then $f_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}(x)=x\sum _{k=0}^{\infty }a_{k}x^{k}/k!$ with all $a_{k}\in R$. (3) In (2), if $m=p^{2}$, then $a_{k}\equiv -1~\text{(mod}~p\text{)}$ for all $k$ that are powers of $p$.

We show that a natural generalization of compressibility is the sole obstruction to the existence of a cocycle-invariant Borel probability measure.

Quasi-Sturmian words, which are infinite words with factor complexity eventually $n+c$ share many properties with Sturmian words. In this article, we study the quasi-Sturmian colorings on regular trees. There are two different types, bounded and unbounded, of quasi-Sturmian colorings. We obtain an induction algorithm similar to Sturmian colorings. We distinguish them by the recurrence function.

In this paper, we consider the spectrum of discrete quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on $\ell ^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ with the potentials $v\in C^{k}(\mathbb{T})$. For sufficiently large $k$, we show that the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum of its periodic approximants. This gives a partial answer to the problem proposed in Jitomirskaya and Mavi [Continuity of the measure of the spectrum for quasiperiodic schrödinger operator with rough potentials. Comm. Math. Phys.325 (2014), 585–601]. Our results are based on a generalization of the rigidity theorem in Avila and Krikorian [Reducibility or non-uniform hyperbolicity for quasiperiodic Schrödinger cocycles. Ann. of Math. (2)164 (2006), 911–940]; more precisely, we prove that in the $C^{k}$ case, for almost every frequency $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \mathbb{R}\backslash \mathbb{Q}$ and for almost every $E$, the corresponding quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles are either reducible or non-uniformly hyperbolic.

We compute the homology groups of transformation groupoids associated with odometers and show that certain $(\mathbb{Z}\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{2})$-odometers give rise to counterexamples to the HK conjecture, which relates the homology of an essentially principal, minimal, ample groupoid $G$ with the K-theory of $C_{r}^{\ast }(G)$. We also show that transformation groupoids of odometers satisfy the AH conjecture.

It was recently shown in Gaidashev and Yampolsky [Golden mean Siegel disk universality and renormalization. Preprint, 2016, arXiv:1604.00717] that appropriately defined renormalizations of a sufficiently dissipative golden-mean semi-Siegel Hénon map converge super-exponentially fast to a one-dimensional renormalization fixed point. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic two-dimensional form of these renormalizations is universal and is parameterized by the average Jacobian. This is similar to the limit behavior of period-doubling renormalizations in the Hénon family considered in de Carvalho et al [Renormalization in the Hénon family, I: universality but non-rigidity. J. Stat. Phys.121 (5/6) (2006), 611–669]. As an application of our result, we prove that the boundary of the golden-mean Siegel disk of a dissipative Hénon map is non-smoothly rigid.
