In this paper we deal with the existence of periodic orbits of geodesible vector fields on closed 3-manifolds. A vector field is geodesible if there exists a Riemannian metric on the ambient manifold making its orbits geodesics. In particular, Reeb vector fields and vector fields that admit a global section are geodesible. We will classify the closed 3-manifolds that admit aperiodic volume-preserving Cω geodesible vector fields, and prove the existence of periodic orbits for Cω geodesible vector fields (not volume preserving), when the 3-manifold is not a torus bundle over the circle. We will also prove the existence of periodic orbits of C2 geodesible vector fields on some closed 3-manifolds.

The goal of this article is to give a new proof of there being strong type (p,p) bounds, for any p with 1>p>∞, for the class of square functions, oscillation operators and variation operators that arise when considering multiparameter differentiation and multiparameter ergodic averages. The method of proof is to first show that there is a strong estimate from L∞ to BMO for these operators in the case of multiparameter differentiation; then, by using known weak (1, 1) estimates and interpolation, one obtains strong bounds for these operators in the case of multiparameter differentiation. It follows from applying the Calderón transfer principle that these operators are of strong type (p,p), for all 1>p>∞, for the corresponding multiparameter ergodic averages.

We study the distribution on ℝ2 of the orbit of a vector under the linear action of SL(2,ℤ). Let Ω⊂ℝ2 be a compact set and x∈ℝ2. Let N(k,x) be the number of matrices γ∈SL(2,ℤ) such that γ(x)∈Ω and ‖γ‖≤k, k=1,2,…. If Ω is a square, we prove the existence of an absolute error term for N(k,x), as k→∞, for almost every x, which depends on the Diophantine property of the ratio of the coordinates of x. Our approach translates the question into a Diophantine approximation counting problem which provides the absolute error term. The asymptotical behaviour of N(k,x) is also obtained using ergodic theory.

We prove an improved Ck Koebe principle for a Ck interval map with non-flat critical points, where k≥3, that requires no disjointness of the intervals involved.

In this paper we study characteristic exponents of flows in relation with the dynamics of flows on flag bundles. The starting point is a flow on a principal bundle with semi-simple group G. Projection against the Iwasawa decomposition G=KAN defines an additive cocycle over the flow with values in 𝔞=log A. Its Lyapunov exponents (limits along trajectories) and Morse exponents (limits along chains) are studied. A symmetric property of these spectral sets is proved, namely invariance under the Weyl group. We also prove that these sets are located in certain Weyl chambers, defined from the dynamics on the associated flag bundles. As a special case linear flows on vector bundles are considered.

In this paper we study the multifractal spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for interval maps with infinitely many branches and a parabolic fixed point. It turns out that, in strong contrast with the hyperbolic case, the domain of the spectrum is unbounded and points of non-differentiability might exist. Moreover, the spectrum is not concave. We establish conditions that ensure the existence of inflection points. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that conditions of this type have been given. We also study the thermodynamic formalism for such maps. We prove that the pressure function is real analytic in a certain interval and then becomes equal to zero. We also discuss the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium measures. In order to do so, we introduce a family of countable Markov shifts that can be thought of as a generalization of the renewal shift.

In this paper, we study some skew product diffeomorphisms with non-uniformly hyperbolic structure along fibers and show that there is an invariant measure with zero entropy which has atomic conditional measures along fibers. For such diffeomorphisms, our result gives an affirmative answer to the question posed by Herman as to whether a smooth diffeomorphism of positive topological entropy would fail to be uniquely ergodic. The proof is based on some techniques that are analogous to those developed by Pesin and Katok, together with an investigation of certain combinatorial properties of the projected return map on the base.

The eigenvectors of an ergodic semigroup of linear normal positive unital maps on a von Neumann algebra are described. Moreover, it is shown by means of examples that mere positivity of the maps in question is not sufficient for Frobenius theory as in Albeverio and Høegh-Krohn [Frobenius theory of positive maps of von Neumann algebras. Comm. Math. Phys.64 (1978), 83–94] to hold.

We consider cubic polynomials with a simple parabolic fixed point of multiplier 1. For those maps, we prove that the boundary of the immediate basin of attraction of the parabolic point is a Jordan curve (except for the polynomial z+z3 where it consists in two Jordan curves). Moreover, we give a description of the dynamics and obtain the local connectivity of the Julia set under some assumptions.

In this paper, we study translation sets for non-decreasing maps of the real line with a pattern-equivariant displacement with respect to a quasicrystal. First, we establish a correspondence between these maps and self maps of the continuous hull associated with the quasicrystal that are homotopic to the identity and preserve orientation. Then, by using first-return times and induced maps, we provide a partial description for the translation set of the latter maps in the case where they have fixed points and obtain the existence of a unique translation number in the case where they do not have fixed points. Finally, we investigate the existence of a semiconjugacy from a fixed-point-free map homotopic to the identity on the hull to the translation given by its translation number. We concentrate on semiconjugacies that are also homotopic to the identity and, under a boundedness condition, we prove a generalization of Poincaré’s theorem, finding a sufficient condition for such a semiconjugacy to exist depending on the translation number of the given map.

We first study the rate of growth of ergodic sums along a sequence (an) of times: SNf(x)=∑ n≤Nf(Tanx). We characterize the maximal rate of growth and identify a number of sequences such as an=2n, along which the maximal rate of growth is achieved. To point out though the general character of our techniques, we then turn to Khintchine’s strong uniform distribution conjecture that the averages (1/N)∑ n≤Nf(nx mod 1) converge pointwise to ∫ f for integrable functions f. We give a simple, intuitive counterexample and prove that, in fact, divergence occurs at the maximal rate.

Let f be a homeomorphism of a compact manifold M. The Krylov–Bogoloubov theorem guarantees the existence of a measure that is invariant with respect to f. The set of all invariant measures ℳ(f) is convex and compact in the weak topology. The goal of this paper is to construct the set ℳ(f). To obtain an approximation of ℳ(f), we use the symbolic image with respect to a partition C={M(1),M(2),…,M(n)} of M. A symbolic image G is a directed graph such that a vertex i corresponds to the cell M(i) and an edge i→j exists if and only if f(M(i))∩M(j)≠0̸. This approach lets us apply the coding of orbits and symbolic dynamics to arbitrary dynamical systems. A flow on the symbolic image is a probability distribution on the edges which satisfies Kirchhoff’s law at each vertex, i.e. the incoming flow equals the outgoing one. Such a distribution is an approximation to some invariant measure. The set of flows on the symbolic image G forms a convex polyhedron ℳ(G) which is an approximation to the set of invariant measures ℳ(f). By considering a sequence of subdivisions of the partitions, one gets sequence of symbolic images Gk and corresponding approximations ℳ(Gk) which tend to ℳ(f) as the diameter of the cells goes to zero. If the flows mk on each Gk are chosen in a special manner, then the sequence {mk} converges to some invariant measure. Every invariant measure can be obtained by this method. Applications and numerical examples are given.

We show that the set I(f) of points that converge to infinity under iteration of the exponential map f(z)=exp (z) is a connected subset of the complex plane.

We investigate the dynamics of polynomial semigroups (semigroups generated by a family of polynomial maps on the Riemann sphere ) and the random dynamics of polynomials on the Riemann sphere. Combining the dynamics of semigroups and the fiberwise (random) dynamics, we give a classification of polynomial semigroups G such that G is generated by a compact family Γ, the planar postcritical set of G is bounded, and G is (semi-) hyperbolic. In one of the classes, we have that, for almost every sequence , the Julia set Jγ of γ is a Jordan curve but not a quasicircle, the unbounded component of is a John domain, and the bounded component of is not a John domain. Note that this phenomenon does not hold in the usual iteration of a single polynomial. Moreover, we consider the dynamics of polynomial semigroups G such that the planar postcritical set of G is bounded and the Julia set is disconnected. Those phenomena of polynomial semigroups and random dynamics of polynomials that do not occur in the usual dynamics of polynomials are systematically investigated.

This paper deals with random perturbations of diffeomorphisms on n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with distributions supported on k-dimensional disks, where k<n. First we demonstrate general but not very intuitive conditions which guarantee that all invariant measures for rank-k random perturbations of C2 diffeomorphisms are absolutely continuous with respect to the Riemannian measure on M. For two subclasses of Anosov diffeomorphisms, hyperbolic toral automorphisms and Anosov diffeomorphisms with codimension 1 stable manifolds, the above conditions are modified in order to relate k-dimensional disks that support the distributions to certain foliations that arise from Anosov diffeomorphisms. We conclude that generic rank-k random perturbations have absolutely continuous invariant measures.

D. Ruelle and I. Putnam have constructed three C*-algebras from the homoclinic and heteroclinic structure of a Smale space. This paper gives gives a complete description of these algebras when the Smale space is one of the generalized one-dimensional solenoids studied by R. Williams and I. Yi.

We consider the variational principle for dimension on compact subsets of the 2-torus which are invariant under a non-conformal expanding diagonal endomorphism. Condition (H) ensures that the invariant measures with full dimension are the equilibrium states of some potential function. This result applies to the problem of uniqueness of the measure with full dimension on the sofic affine-invariant sets.

We consider the dynamics of expanding semigroups generated by finitely many rational maps on the Riemann sphere. We show that for an analytic family of such semigroups, the Bowen parameter function is real-analytic and plurisubharmonic. Combining this with a result obtained by the first author, we show that if each semigroup of such an analytic family of expanding semigroups satisfies the open set condition, then the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is a real-analytic and plurisubharmonic function of the parameter. Moreover, we provide an extensive collection of examples of analytic families of semigroups satisfying all of the above conditions and we analyze in detail the corresponding Bowen’s parameters and Hausdorff dimension function.
