We discuss the effects of temporal aggregation on the estimation of cointegrating vectors and on testing linear restrictions on this vector. We adopt a discrete time approach and demonstrate, in contrast with the findings of Chambers (2003, Econometric Theory 19, 49–77), who adopts a continuous time approach, that in some situations, when the regressand must be aggregated, systematic sampling is preferable to average sampling for estimation purposes. Like Chambers, we show that the best aggregation scheme for regressors, in terms of asymptotic estimation efficiency, is always average sampling. This paper establishes central limit theorems (CLTs) and proposes how to perform valid inference in factor models. We consider a setting where many counties/regions/assets are observed for many time periods, and when estimation of a global parameter includes aggregation of a cross-section of heterogeneous microparameters estimated separately for each entity. The CLT applies for quantities involving both cross-sectional and time series aggregation, as well as for quadratic forms in time-aggregated errors. This paper studies the conditions when one can consistently estimate the asymptotic variance, and proposes a bootstrap scheme for cases when one cannot. A small simulation study illustrates performance of the asymptotic and bootstrap procedures. The results are useful for making inferences in two-step estimation procedures related to factor models, as well as in other related contexts. Our treatment avoids structural modeling of cross-sectional dependence but imposes time-series independence.

This study examines identification and estimation in a correlated random coefficients (CRC) model with an unknown transformation of the dependent variable, namely $\lambda \left (Y^{*}\right)=B_{0}+X^{\prime }B$, where the latent outcome $Y^{*}$ may be subject to a certain kind of censoring mechanism, $\lambda (\cdot)$ is an unknown, one-to-one monotone function, and the random coefficients $\left (B_{0},B\right)$ are allowed to be correlated with one or several components of X. Under a conditional median independence plus a conditional median zero restriction, the mean of B is shown to be identified up to scale. Moreover, we show the derivative of the median structural function (MSF) is point identified. This derivative of MSF resembles the marginal treatment effect introduced by Heckman and Vytlacil (2005, Econometrica 73, 669–738).

It generalizes the usual average treatment effect in a linear CRC model and coincides with $E(B)$ when $\lambda $ is equal to the identity function; it is invariant to both location and scale normalization on the coefficients. We develop estimators for the identified parameters and derive asymptotic properties for the derivative of MSF. An empirical example using the U.K. Family Expenditure Survey is provided.

Let and Θ be infinite sets and let × Θ. We show that the class of projections of A onto is a Vapnik–Chervonenkis (VC) class of sets if and only if the class of projections of A onto Θ is a VC class. We illustrate the result in the context of semiparametric estimation of a transformation model. In this application, the VC property is hard to establish for the projection class of interest but easy to establish for the other projection class.

The paper presents the asymptotic theory of the efficient method of moments when the model of interest is not correctly specified. The paper assumes a sequence of independent and identically distributed observations and a global misspecification. It is found that the limiting distribution of the estimator is still asymptotically normal, but it suffers a strong impact in the covariance matrix. A consistent estimator of this covariance matrix is provided. The large sample distribution on the estimated moment function is also obtained. These results are used to discuss the situation when the moment conditions hold but the model is misspecified. It also is shown that the overidentifying restrictions test has asymptotic power one whenever the limit moment function is different from zero. It is also proved that the bootstrap distributions converge almost surely to the previously mentioned distributions and hence they could be used as an alternative to draw inferences under misspecification. Interestingly, it is also shown that bootstrap can be reliably applied even if the number of bootstrap replications is very small.The authors express their gratitude to Professor A.R. This paper derives the joint moment generating function of quadratic forms occurring in seasonal autoregressive models under stationary, unit root, and explosive specifications. The results are then used to investigate the impact of the seasonal periodicity parameter on various distributional results for both the normalized ordinary least squares coefficient and t-ratio and its effects on the asymptotic bias of parameter estimates.

This paper introduces structural equations that do not satisfy the rank and/or order condition(s) for identification but still are identifiable. These equations are called seemingly unidentified structural equations. The key to the identifiability of these equations is that the right-hand-side endogenous variables undergo structural changes with respect to the exogenous and/or predetermined variables. To estimate the seemingly unidentified structural equations, this paper uses the classical minimum distance (MD) estimator and the principal components instrumental variables (PCIV) estimator. The PCIV estimator is different from conventional IV estimators for structural equations in that nonlinear functions of exogenous and/or predetermined variables are used as instruments. Simulation results comparing the estimator efficiency of the MD and PCIV estimators are reported in this paper. The results indicate that the MD and PCIV estimators are complementary to each other. The estimation methods proposed in this paper are applied to the Japanese export and GDP data to study the effect of export growth rate on that of GDP.

The central limit theorem for nonparametric kernel estimates of a smooth trend, with linearly generated errors, indicates asymptotic independence and homoskedasticity across fixed points, irrespective of whether disturbances have short memory, long memory, or antipersistence. However, the asymptotic variance depends on the kernel function in a way that varies across these three circumstances, and in the latter two it involves a double integral that cannot necessarily be evaluated in closed form. For a particular class of kernels, we obtain analytic formulas. We discuss extensions to more general settings, including ones involving possible cross-sectional or spatial dependence.

This article considers testing for independence in a time series of small counts within an Integer Autoregressive (INAR) model, taking a semiparametric approach that avoids any distributional assumption on the arrivals process of the model. The nature of the testing problem is shown to differ depending on whether or not the support of the arrivals distribution is the full set of natural numbers (as would be the case for Poisson or Negative Binomial distributions for example) or some strict subset of the natural numbers (such as for a Binomial or Uniform distribution). The theory for these two cases is studied separately.

For the case where the arrivals have support on the natural numbers, a new asymptotically efficient semiparametric test, the effective score (Neyman-Rao) test, is derived. The semiparametric Likelihood-Ratio, Wald and score tests are shown to be asymptotically equivalent to the effective score test, and hence also asymptotically efficient. Asymptotic relative efficiency calculations demonstrate that the semiparametric effective score test can provide substantial power advantages over the first order autocorrelation coefficient, which is most commonly applied in practice.

For the case where the arrivals have support that is a strict subset of the natural numbers, the theory is considerably altered because the support of the observations becomes different under the null and alternative hypotheses. The semiparametric Likelihood-Ratio, Wald and score tests become asymptotically degenerate in this case, while the effective score test remains valid. Remarkably, in this case the effective score test is also found to have power against local alternatives that shrink to the null at the rate T−1. In rare cases where the arrival support is partly or totally known, additional tests exploiting this information are considered.

Finite sample properties of the tests in these various cases demonstrate the semiparametric effective score test can provide substantial power advantages over the first order autocorrelation test implied by a parametric Poisson specification. The simulations also reveal situations in which the first order autocorrelation is preferable in finite samples, so a hybrid of the effective score and autocorrelation tests is proposed to capture most of the benefits of each test.

Let x be a transformation of y, whose distribution is unknown. We derive an expansion formulating the expectations of x in terms of the expectations of y. Apart from the intrinsic interest in such a fundamental relation, our results can be applied to calculating E(x) by the low-order moments of a transformation which can be chosen to give a good approximation for E(x). To do so, we generalize the approach of bounding the terms in expansions of characteristic functions, and use our result to derive an explicit and accurate bound for the remainder when a finite number of terms is taken. We illustrate one of the implications of our method by providing accurate naive bootstrap confidence intervals for the mean of any fat-tailed distribution with an infinite variance, in which case currently available bootstrap methods are asymptotically invalid or unreliable in finite samples.

On the evening of March 7, 2008, the New Zealand Econometric Study Group Meeting held its Conference Dinner. The venue was the Owen Glenn Building, the spectacular new home of the Auckland Business School and the Department of Economics at the University of Auckland. The meeting was organized by my colleagues, co-authors, and close companions Donggyu Sul and Chirok Han. Chirok did double duty by videotaping the evening, Donggyu coordinated festivities with consummate skill, and we settled in to a memorable evening.

Econometricians, old friends, former students, two of my former teachers, faculty, and senior administrators were gathered together to celebrate my 60th birthday. Many had traveled long distances from overseas and navigated busy schedules to come to this event. It was a singular honor. My wife and daughter were with me. Opening speeches from Bas Sharp and John McDermott broke the ice with endearing tales from the past and jokes about some mysterious hole in my vita. I stood at the front table, looked out, and felt a glow of fellowship envelop me. I was fortunate indeed. Life had bestowed many gifts. The warmth of family, friends, and collegiality were at the top of the list. My education and early training in New Zealand were a clear second.

What follows is a graduate student story. It draws on the first part of the speech I gave that evening at the NZESG conference dinner. It mixes personal reflections with recollections of the extraordinary New Zealanders who shaped my thinking as a graduate student and beginning researcher—people who have had an enduring impact on my work and career as an econometrician. The story traces out these human initial conditions and unit roots that figure in my early life of teaching and research.

We develop the limit theory of the quantilogram and cross-quantilogram under long memory. We establish the sub-root-n central limit theorems for quantilograms that depend on nuisance parameters. We propose a moving block bootstrap (MBB) procedure for inference and establish its consistency, thereby enabling a consistent confidence interval construction for the quantilograms. The newly developed reduction principles for the quantilograms serve as the main technical devices used to derive the asymptotics and establish the validity of MBB. We report some simulation evidence that our methods work satisfactorily. We apply our method to quantile predictive relations between financial returns and long-memory predictors.

We consider nonparametric identification and estimation of pricing kernels, or equivalently of marginal utility functions up to scale, in consumption-based asset pricing Euler equations. Ours is the first paper to prove nonparametric identification of Euler equations under low level conditions (without imposing functional restrictions or just assuming completeness). We also propose a novel nonparametric estimator based on our identification analysis, which combines standard kernel estimation with the computation of a matrix eigenvector problem. Our estimator avoids the ill-posed inverse issues associated with nonparametric instrumental variables estimators. We derive limiting distributions for our estimator and for relevant associated functionals. A Monte Carlo experiment shows a satisfactory finite sample performance for our estimators.

In this comment on Gurmu and Trivedi's “Variable Augmentation Specification Tests in the Linear Exponential Family,” I show how their generalized linear model (GLM) approach relates to other work in econometrics on specification testing in the linear exponential family. In addition to shedding light on the relationship between the statistics and econometrics literatures on testing in quasi-likelihood frameworks, this comparison reveals some important limitations of GLM as a general framework for devising specification tests.
