In this study an attempt was made to develop a suitable diluent based on the characteristics ofgood quality ovarian fluid of Oncorhynchus mykiss. The resulting simulated ovarian fluid (SOF) was compared with Borax-borie acid buffer diluent and adjusted versions thereof. The composition of al1 these diluents are given in this paper. Maximum fertilization success (81.76%) was achieved when ovarian lluid was employed as a sperm diluent. Spermatozoa showed maximum (34 seconds) forward motility after dilution with Borax 3. The use of diluents in artificial fertilization techniques by trout farmers can help them to increase the fertilization success and also facilitates hatchery procedures and broodslock management.

Les modèles globaux utilisés pour décrire la dynamique des populations marines exploitées supposent en général que la production de biomasse peut être décrite par une fonction de la seule biomasse exploitée. Si une certaine quantité de biomasse reste inaccessible à la pêcherie, cette hypothèse n'est pas vérifiée. Nous étudions dans cet article des modèles supposant l'existence d'une telle quantité.Lorsqu'au cours de l'histoire d'une pêcherie cette quantité de biomasse inaccessible a pu se modifier, de tels modèles peuvent être utiles. En utilisant des données d'environnement en Côte-d'Ivoire, cette approche est utilisée ici pour décrire la pêcherie du stock ivoiro-ghanéen de sardinelles rondes Sardinella aurita de 1966 à 1980. Les ajustements réalisés sont satisfaisants, mais ils ne permettentpas de choisir entre deux formulations proposées, qui conduisent à des à conclusions différentes en matière de gestion du stock.

This study was designed to assess in situ the effects of sediment nearness on Crassostrea gigas metabolism. One year-old oysters were reared for 5 months (April-August) in plastic bags on metallic frames at 10 and 60 cm off the sediment at the beginning of April. The management of the energetic resources (storage, consumption) was estimated with respect to biochemical changes of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. In order to evaluate the effect of the sediment nearness at cellular level, the metabolic rate was evaluated by assessing pyruvate kinase (PK) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) enzyme activities and electron transport system (ETS) activity. The metabolic pathways were assessed by measuring ATP and intermediary metabolites such as alanine, succinate and aspartate. Despite similar survival and growth at the two rearing levels, the protein, lipid and carbohydrate content were significantly lower in the oysters close to the bottom. In the oysters reared at 10 cm, PK activity was also significantly reduced and a significant negative correlation between alanine content and PK activity was revealed. The sediment nearness decreased significantly the ATP content in the oyster. There was a significant relationship between ATP and aspartate in these oysters. The use of aspartate contributed to complete the metabolic pathways along with carbohydrate allowing to maintain the same biological performance as the oyster reared far from the bottom. The energy state (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and ATP contents) could suggest that the oysters close to the sediment were fed less but the metabolic enzyme activities allow to suggest an oxygen deficiency. However, the reduced PK activity, the absence of PEPCK activity stimulation and the utilization of aspartate suggest a transition stage to anaerobiosis.

Brown trout and rainbow trout (average weight 100 g) were reared in fresh water at 12 °C under the same conditions before transferring brown trout to sea water, in order to compare phosphorus utilisation in both species. Apparent phosphorus availability, orthophosphate excretion and phosphorus accretion in the fish were directly determined. Thus, actual phosphorus mass balance was built. Rainbow trout raised in fresh water had a higher phosphorus retention coefficient (maximum 50 %) than brown trout reared in fresh water (maximum 45 %). Transferring brown trout to sea water induced a reduction in phosphorus retention (maximum 39 %). Orthophosphate excretion, ranging 7-20 mg phosphorus per kg wet weight per day, represented 10-20 % of ingested phosphorus. Phosphorus availability was lower in brown trout raised in sea water (65 %) than brown trout raised in fresh water (76 %). Phosphorus balance measurements showed that 90 to 98 % of phosphorus flow could be accounted for.

While lognormal distributions have been proposed as useful descriptors of recruitment variability, the very nature of the recruitment distributions is still debated.To account quantitatively for recruitment distributions,I here propose a Weibull exponential model;it derives from a simple and natural hypothesis for uncorrelated recruitment processes of spawning, hatching, growth and survival through the early life stages to the point of vulnerability to the fishery.The quantification of Weibull exponentials is particularly important with regards to extrapolations to low recruits that have not yet been observed.To test the Weibull exponential null-hypothesis, I examine annual time-series of recruitment in major aquatic stocks.The Weibull exponential quite describes the bulk (95%) of the recruitment distributions of widely differing stocks,while the remaining 5% of the largest recruits are occurring with a much larger rate than predicted by the Weibull exponential.Further, I study the inter-event times between unusually high numbers in recruitment time-series data and find that intermittent pulses of strong recruitment follow non-Poisson statistics, which arises from year-to-year persistence of the magnitude of recruitment:large (or small) recruits are more likely to be followed by large (or small) recruits.This recruitment clustering effect is confirmed by the rescaled range analysis method.The empirical results imply that individual survivals on recruitment levels are independent of initial cohort sizes but year-to-year recruiting events exhibit long-term correlations.

L'influence des régimes hydrologique et thermique de la rivière aux Pins, un petit tributaire du fleuve Saint-Laurent, sur les migrations de fraie du Grand Brochet (Esox lucius) et sur l'avalaison des jeunes brochets de l'année, a été étudiée en situation naturelle en 1975, puis en situation de niveau contrôlé en 1976. L'analyse factorielle des correspondances multiples a permis l'étude des covariationsentre cinq variables biologiques et 12 variables hydrologiques et climatiques. Environ 70 % des adultes étaient déjà présents dans la frayère au moment de l'installation des verveux, pourtant effectuée tôt en saison. Le pic de fraie est survenu les 25 et 9 avril en 1975 et en 1976 (température moyenne de l'eau : 7–10 °C). L'avalaison des adultes fut hâtive en 1975; en 1976, elle fut très importante immédiatement aprés la fraie, de faible intensité pendant le contrôle du niveau, et importante au moment de l'abandon du contrôle. Bien que modulée par l'influence des fortes températures, l'avalaison desgéniteurs sensible étre favorisée par la baisse du niveau. A l'inverse, une augmentation du niveau suite à une pluie entraîne une montaison et ralentit l'avalaison, même tard en saison. Les premières avalaisons de jeunes brochets de l'année survinrent environ 30 jours après le pic de la fraie, à une taille moyenne de 19 mm. A la fin juin 1975, 72 % des jeunes séjournaient encore dans la frayère, contre 27 % en 1976. L'abandon du contrôle du niveau, à compter de la fin mai, en 1976, provoqua l'avalaison massive des jeunes brochets. Ces résultats permettent de prédire l'impact des manipulationsdu niveau de l'eau, en situation de frayère aménagée, sur le comportement des géniteurs et des jeunes de l'année.

Les lagunes côtières doivent leur forte productivité aux échanges qu'elles entretiennent avec les eaux marines et continentales. Au Togo, en période de fermeture du cordon littoral (situation observée en 1994), la salinité est faible: 1 psu à Agbodrafo, ainsi que la diversité spécifique du peuplement étudié (Ish = 2,13). A l'inverse, après une période de communication avec la mer comme ce fut le cas en 1989, la salinité remonte sur l'ensemble du plan d'eau (7 psu à Agbodrafo) et les peuplements de poissons et de crustacés sont plus variés (Ish = 2.74) et à tendance marine ou marine-estuarienne (Liza, Caranx, Penaeus, Gerres...). Dans ce cas, les rendements élevés (300 à 400 kg/ha/an) s'expliquent par un enrichissement du milieu lagunaire dû aux apports marins et à l'introduction d'espèces marines. En situation d'isolement, les peuplements sont essentiellement estuariens et largement dominés par les Cichlidae et plus particulièrement Sarotherodon melanotheron qui représente à lui seul 50 % des captures totales. Dans un contexte de pêche particulièrement active, l'expansion de cette espèce est certainement due au fait qu'elle présente une reproduction continue. Néanmoins, les valeurs des rendements totaux observés (160 kg/h/dan), des tailles maximales (250 mm), des tailles moyennes de capture (120 mm) et des tailles de première maturité sexuelle (85 mm), inférieures aux valeurs rencontrées dans les autres lagunes de la région (Nigeria et Côte-d'Ivoire), semblent traduire une croissance de Sarotherodon plus faible au Togo. L'absence de communication avec la mer et la pression de pêche intensive seraient à l'origine d'une prolifération de cette espèce dont les fortes abondances entraîneraient à leur tour un ralentissement de la croissance.

The purpose of this study was to develop and compare two methods for measurement of red-area coverage in white-red ornamental (koi) carp. One progeny produced by crossing two white-red koi breeders was analyzed. Among 49 fish in the progeny, 7 fish (14.3%) were solid white, 36 fish (73.5%) were white-red, and 6 fish (12.2%) were solid red. The red-area coverage in all white-red fish was determined by analysis of digital photographs using the image editing software Adobe® PhotoDeluxe® Business Edition (method I) and the specialized image analysis software Image-Pro® Plus (method II). The red-area coverage in white-red fish was highly variable, from 0.08 to 68.4%. The difference in red-area coverage for individual fish when comparing these two methods varied from 0.04 to 2.75% with a mean value of 1.03 ± 0.82% (SD). Class distributions of white-red fish with regard to red-area coverage determined by methods I and II did not differ significantly. The obtained data show that both methods can be successfully used for quantitative measurement of color patches in koi. Analysis of frequency distribution of red-area coverage in all fish (including solid white and solid red) showed that fish were clearly divided into two groups with regard to background color: fish with white background (which includes solid white and white-red fish), and solid red fish. The present study confirms that measuring the relative red body coverage gives a valuable insight into the quantitative description of color variability in koi and provides further information for the better understanding of inheritance of this trait. The development and application of new advanced methods for measurement of red-area coverage may stimulate further studies on this subject.

Le rythme de dépôt des microstries sur les otolithes de Epinephelus microdon a été mesuré grâce à l'injection d'un marqueur fluorescent, la tétracycline ; 14 poissons adultes répartis en cinq lots ont été maintenus en élevage pendant plus de 1 année et leurs otolithes marqués suivant des plans d'expérience différents. En comparant le nombre de microstries comptées entre deux marques fluorescentes ou entre une marque fluorescente et le bord externe de l'otolithe au nombre de jours écoulés entre deux injections ou entre une injection et le sacrifice du poisson, il a été possible d'établir qu'une microstrie est formée en moyenne tous les 2 jours. Cette fréquence varie d'un individu à l'autre et il est montré que le rythme de dépôt des stries est corrélé positivement avec la croissance du poisson mais est indépendant de sa longueur. Parmi les hypothèses envisagées pour expliquer l'écart avec la fréquence journalière, l'arrêt du dépôt des microstries, lors d'interruptions de la croissance squelettique, a été jugée comme la seule explication satisfaisante. Cette étude met donc en évidence la nécessité de valider la période de ces stries avant toute utilisation pour estimer l'âge de poissons adultes par la technique de lecture des otolithes.

Icelanders gradually adopted an Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) in their waters. This property-rights based system yielded benefits to the economy but was not applied to all fishermen. Some fishermen remained outside of the ITQ system and were subject to other management measures. In this paper we investigate the effects of various effort restrictions on the behaviour of fishermen outside of the ITQ system. Empirical estimates from duration model analysis are presented which measure the effects of various management measures aimed at affecting the behaviour of those “outsiders” as well as the indirect effect of the ITQ system on the behaviour of those who stayed outside of it. The results show that outsiders had incentives to stay outside of the ITQ system and free-ride on the behaviour of the ITQ fleet. Management measures aimed at restricting their effort proved to be ineffective. The conclusions can be generalized to other situations where property rights based management systems are used and economic agents harvest a common resource pool.

The genetic characterization of catfishes by means of phenotypic markers, karyotyping, protein and DNA polymorphisms contributes to or forms an integral part of the disciplines of systematics, population genetics, quantitative genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and aquaculture. Judged from the literature, the general approach to research is pragmatic; the Siluroidei do not include model species for fundamental genetic research. The Clariidae and the Ictaluridae represent the best studied families. The systematic status of a number of species and families has been either elucidated or confirmed by genetic approaches. Duplication of ancestral genes occurred in catfishes just as in other vertebrates. The genetic structure of and gene flow among natural populations have heen documented in relatively few cases, while the evaluation of strains for aquaculture (especially Ictaluridae and Clariidae) is in progress. The mapping of genetic markers has started in Ictalurus.It appears that a more detailed knowledge of catfish populations is required from two perspectives. First, natural populations which are threatened by habitat loss and interfluvial or intercontinental transfers are poorly characterized at the genetic level. Secondly, the selection of suitable strains for aquaculture should be encouraged. Implementation should pose no problems given the present powerful means, such as DNA characterization combined with protein polymorphisms and phenotyping, to solve the above-mentioned issues.

Great variations were observed in length-at-age among populations of white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, in 32 Ontario lakes. The spatial structuring of these data was examined using the Mantel test with respect to the corresponding spatial structuring for various environmental variables which might affect growth of the white sucker. These environmental variables include lake geographic location, lake morphometry, water chemistry, food supply, presence/absence of major predator species, and population density and length at sexual maturity of the white sucker. Geographic distances among lakes and among-lake differences in water chemistry were significantly related to among-population differences in length-at-age. Among-lake differences in lake morphometric variables, benthos densities, presence/absence of predator species, and length at maturity and population density of the white sucker were not significantly related to among-population differences in length-at-age. No sex-specific differences in the effects of environmental variables on length-at-age were observed. This study suggests that the among-lake differences in water chemistry (thus, physiological stresses) and isolation-by-distance (thus, genetic forces) are the two most important factors in patterning the large variations in length-at-age among white sucker populations. However, discerning the separate effect of each of these two factors is not possible because the spatial patterns of these two factors are related.

L'évolution annuelle du rapport gonado-somatique (RGS) de mâles et femelles d'atipa (Hoplosternum littorale) collectés mensuellement sur le marais de Kaw (Guyane française) a été comparée au régime local des pluies. Les résultats obtenus sur les femelles ont été comparés à ceux publiés pour Trinidad et Marajo (Brésil). Quel que soit le site, la valeur maximale du RGS, compris, en moyenne entre 11 et 15 selon la localité, coïncide avec le premier maximum pluvieux (juillet à Trinidad, janvier à Kaw, février à Marajo). Cependant, son augmentation débute pendant la saison sèche (mars-avril à Trinidad, août-septembre à Kaw, octobre-novembre à Marajo), après une période « réfractaire » vraisemblablement obligatoire et nécessaire à la reconstitution des réserves énergétiques. L'analyse des données issues d'un échantillon plus restreint prélevé sur une autre localité guyanaise (crique Macouria) confirme ce résultat. Les mesures physicochimiques de l'eau réalisées sur cette dernière localité ont permis de montrer, au cours de la période précoce de la maturation gonadique en novembre, une coïncidence entre l'augmentation de la conductivité (72 à 167 μ/cm2) et celle du RGS des femelles (0 à 6 %) ou des mâles (0 à 0,2 %). Cependant, passée cette période, bien que la valeur de la conductivité baisse (de 167 à 67 μS/cm2 de décembre à janvier), la croissance du RGS se poursuit (6 à 12 % chez les femelles; 0,2 à 0,6 % chez les mâles). La chute de la valeur de la conductivité n'enraye donc pas la poursuite du processus de maturation gonadique.

An histology and pathological survey on carpet-shell clam cultured in the south of Galicia (NW Spain) (Ruditapes decussatus) was carried out for a two years period (2000-2001). A temporal distribution of the potentially pathogenic agents were determined by histological analysis. In addition, stocks of molluscs reported to suffer mortalities during the studied period were also analyzed and the pathogenic burden determined. Pathogens do not follow a temporal pattern over studied period and no significant differences were detected nor on the presence nor in prevalence of these pathogens among all the analysed stocks. Therefore, no direct relationship can be established between infection by any pathogen and mortality episodes.

Nous étudions les principes généraux qui expliquent comment les animaux aquatiques assurent leurs échanges gazeux (O2 et CO2) en fonction d'une part, de leurs besoins physiologiques et d'autre part, des changements des caractéristiques physico-chimiques du milieu. Cette synthèse, basée sur le cas exemplaire du silure glane, résume nos observations sur les mécanismes qui permettent à des animaux aquatiques physiologiquement très différents de s'adapter aux variations d'oxygénation du milieu ambiant. Le but de la stratégie d'adaptation est de maintenir constant l'état d'oxygénation du sang, à une faible valeur de pression partielle d'O2 (Po2) dans le sang artériel, indépendamment des variations de Po2 dans l'eau. Chez le silure, la valeur la plus couramment mesurée de Po2 dans le sang artériel est 2 kPa (15 mm Hg) pour des variations de Po2 dans l'eau comprises entre 3 et 40 kPa (1,5 à 20 mg.1−1 à 13 °C). Ce qui est aussi particulier chez cet animal est que toute l'adaptation est réalisée par la ventilation : il n'y a aucun changement de débit cardiaque, ni de modification de l'affinité de l'hémoglobine pour l'oxygène via le pH sanguin. La valeur de Po2 inspirée jusqu'à laquelle la consomation d'O2 peut être assurée pendant au moins 24 h à 13 °C est 2 à 3 kPa. Nous pensons que chez le silure cette valeur de Po2 est largement indépendante de la température car chez des animaux aussi divers que la carpe, la truite ou l'écrevisse (adaptés au laboratoire à différentes températures comprises entre 10 et 23 °C) la valeur de Po2 critique est aussi égale à 2-3 kPa indépendamment de la température. Toutes les mesures que nous citons ont été faites chez des animaux à jeun au laboratoire mais le principe du « fonctionnement » de très nombreux animaux aquatiques avec de faibles valeurs de Po2 artériel, indépendamment de la température, a été vérifié dans le milieu naturel. Nous n'avons actuellement aucune idée sur les capacités du silure dans un élevage intensif, en particulier lorsque des pathologies s'y développent. Néanmoins, il est clair que les capacités maximales d'adaptation du silure face à l'hypoxie sont très grandes.

Through the experiments presented here we wanted to test whether egg production of theblack-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii underexperimental conditions varies as a function of ambient salinity (fresh waters vs.sea waters vs. hypersaline waters, 0, 35 and 70, respectively)and whether these responses differ between fish acclimated within a few weeks from freshwater to saline and hypersaline environments (experiments E1 and E2, monitoring over 10and 18 weeks), and individuals born and raised all life long at the experimentalsalinities (E3, monitoring over 18 weeks). In total, 233 spawns were collected. In each ofthe three experiments, the reproductive investment (gram of egg per gram of female over 2weeks) did not differ between salinities of 0 and 35, whereas it was 2–3 times lower at 70than at 0–35, because of lower spawning frequency (E1-E3), smaller clutch size (E1) andlower spawn mass (E1-E3). Finally, fish acclimated to salinity from fresh water over a fewweeks and those maintained at a particular salinity all life long showed similarreproductive traits, thereby emphasizing the remarkable physiological plasticity of thisspecies.

In order to manage the fish stock of the Senegal coastal zone it is necessary to carry out direct assessment surveys by acoustic methods. Acoustic surveys were carried out in this region from a sports-fishing boat, using a split-beam echo sounder in vertical mode, in areas with depth less than 15 m. On a short time scale, spatial structure of the fish population remained stable. The average acoustic biomass detected was variable, but we observed a relative stability of target strength distribution of single fish. The use of acoustic methods in these areas of shallow depths, the consequences of escape behaviour of the fish, and sampling strategies are discussed.

Ammonium and nitrite oxidizing bacteria were enriched in separate cultures using a primary inoculum of water from an enclosed shrimp rearing facility. Each enrichment was continued by transfer to increasing volumes of medium up to 151. Seventy four strains of heterotrophic bacteria were isolated; seventeen from each primary inoculum, and twenty from each of the 151 enrichments at the time when all the ammonium or nitrite had been utilized. All the isolates, described by 101 characters, were subjected to numerical taxonomy. During the enrichment for ammonium oxidizers, astrong selective pressure led to the disappearance of some strains, mostly enterobacteria. Two taxonomic groups composed of pseudomonads and asporogenous Gram positive rods were associated with the ammonium oxidizers. The population was characterized by an inability to use amino acids as carbon and energy sources. In contrast, the strains associated with nitrite oxidizers were able to use all the carbon and energy sources tested. Many of these strains were Gram positive, asporogenous aerobic rods, others were Gram negative pseudomonads.
