Males and females from Soay, Welsh Mountain, Southdown, Finnish Landrace, Jacob, Wiltshire Horn and Oxford Down sheep breeds and a breed of feral goats were slaughtered when proportionately 0·40, 0·52, 0·64 or 0·76 of mature live weight. On average, carcasses contained 583 g muscle, 243 g fat and 174 g bone per kg. Individual cuts (four commercially higher-valued and six lower-valued cuts of the shoulder, rib, loin and gigot joints) ranged from 375 to 670g muscle, 129 to 625 g fat and 0 to 294 g bone per kg.

Allometric coefficients are given for 32 traits. The distribution of bone in the carcass joints changed little as animals matured but carcass muscle and fat distributions changed significantly.

Breeds differed significantly in proportion of carcass muscle, fat and bone and also in their distribution. Welsh Mountain, Southdown, Wiltshire and Oxford Down all deposited carcass fat about three times more rapidly than did the Soay, goat, Finnish Landrace and Jacob. The Oxford Down had the lowest proportion of muscle (514 g/kg) and most fat (317 g/kg). The Southdown had least bone (148 g/kg) and the feral goat most muscle (662 g/kg). Southdown and Soay had the most muscle in commercially higher-valued cuts and Jacob and feral goat the least. Males had significantly more of their muscle in the neck and shoulder and significantly less in the gigot and flank.

As breed size increased, proportion of carcass muscle and bone decreased and proportion of carcass fat increased. These breed regressions were attributed to the small but exceptionally lean feral Soay and goat breeds, rather than to a failure of genetic size-scaling. There were no significant trends with breed size among the domesticated breeds.

The reduction in additive genetic variance due to selection is investigated when index selection using family records is practised. A population of infinite size with no accumulation of inbreeding, an infinitesimal model and discrete generations are assumed. After several generations of selection, the additive genetic variance and the rate of response to selection reach an asymptote. A prediction of the asymptotic rate of response is considered to be more appropriate for comparing response from alternative breeding programmes and for comparing predicted and realized response than the response following the first generation of selection that is classically used. Algorithms to calculate asymptotic response rate are presented for selection based on indices which include some or all of the records of an individual, its full- and half-sibs and its parental estimated breeding values. An index using all this information is used to predict response when selection is based on breeding values estimated by using a Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) animal model, and predictions agree well with simulation results. The predictions are extended to multiple trait selection.

Asymptotic responses are compared with one-generation responses for a variety of alternative breeding schemes differing in population structure, selection intensity and heritability of the trait. Asymptotic responses can be up to one-quarter less than one-generation responses, the difference increasing with selection intensity and accuracy of the index. Between family variance is reduced considerably by selection, perhaps to less than half its original value, so selection indices which do not account for this tend to place too much emphasis on family information. Asymptotic rates of response to selection, using indices including family information for traits not measurable on the individuals available for selection, such as sex limited or post-slaughter traits, are found to be as much as two-fifths less than their expected one-generation responses. Despite this, the ranking of the breeding schemes is not greatly altered when compared by one-generation rather than asymptotic responses, so the one-generation prediction is usually likely to be adequate for determining optimum breeding structure.

Males and females from Soay, Welsh Mountain, Southdown, Finnish Landrace, Jacob, Wiltshire Horn and Oxford Down sheep breeds and a breed of feral goats were slaughtered when proportionately 0·40, 0·52 0·64 or 0·76 of mature live weight. Lipid concentrations in dried tissue were obtained for perirenal fat, omental plus mesenteric fat, subcutaneous fat, carcass muscle plus associated intermuscular fat, carcass bone and offal (pelt, head, feet and organs). Lipid varied from 260 g/kg dry matter (DM) for bone to 968 g/kg for perirenal fat.

As animals matured, lipid concentration increased in the dry matter of all tissues except bone, most rapidly in offal and least in intra-abdominal fat. The increases were highly correlated with the associated increases in proportion of dissected fat.

Breeds differed significantly in lipid concentration in the DM of all tissues examined. Breeds with a high lipid concentration in DM of one tissue usually had high concentrations in all other tissues. The Oxford Down had the highest concentration, and the Soay and feral goat the lowest. Males had slightly lower concentrations in all tissues except internal fat.

As breed size increased, mean lipid concentration (at the same stage of maturity) also increased in the DM of all tissues except bone. These breed regressions were attributed to the sampling of breeds, the smallest breeds being the exceptionally lean Soay and feral goat. Among the domesticated breeds, there were no signficant trends with breed size.

Selection on the basis of estimated breeding value for cow fertility was successful in establishing two distinct lines of high (H) and low (L) fertility in a herd of Droughtmaster (Brahman × Shorthorn) cattle. The average difference in pregnancy rates over 3 years between the H and L line was 12% (P < 0·01) in the selected cows. In lactating cows this difference was 17% indicating that lactational anoestrus was an important component of the line difference in fertility. The total calf losses between confirmed pregnancy and weaning were 17%, but there were no line differences. Cow mortalities were 5% higher (P < 0·01) in pregnant cows than in empty cows but were similar in the H and L 'lines.

H cows were proportionately 0·06 lighter in body weight (P < 0·01) at mating and 0·075 lighter (P < 0·01) at weaning than L cows. Much of this difference was due to the greater number of calves carried and weaned by H cows during their lifetime. Smaller lactation effects on weight gains and weight losses in H cows indicated that these cows were less sensitive in terms of weight gain to seasonal fluctuations in nutrition. H cows conceived earlier than L cows in 2 out of the 3 years and reared calves which were proportionately 0·04 lighter at weaning (P < 0·01). It is suggested that lower milk production in H cows leading to shorter periods of lactational anoestrous, combined with lower sensitivity to nutritional stress, was responsible for their higher fertility.

An enzyme-linked lectin sorbent assay (ELLSA) has been used to determine quantitatively the amount of soya-bean agglutinin (SBA) binding sites in and the sialic acid contents of small intestinal brush border membranes (BBM) of a group of 14 clinically healthy veal calves. Computer analysis of the results indicated 704 (s.e. 27) nmol SBA binding sites per mg of BBM protein with a Kj of 2·63 (s.e. 0·15) × 10-5mol/l; the sialic acid contents were 2·67 (s.e. 0·43) mg/g BBM protein. We could not demonstrate a correlation between the amount of binding sites and the sialic acid contents of the BBM.

Incubation with neuraminidase did not alter the number of SBA binding sites.

Breed means are given for 40 traits relating to food conversion efficiency and body composition at the same stage of maturity in seven breeds of sheep and a feral goat breed. In terms of breed means, food intake and food conversion efficiency were genetically correlated, as were most traits associated with fatness or leanness.

Highly inter-correlated measures of breed fatness were proportion of fat in the carcass, proportion of total carcass fat found in the rib plus loin, the fat : muscle ratio and the lipid concentration in the dry matter of all tissues except bone. Dressing proportion was highly correlated with all these measures of fatness.

Breeds with a high proportion of subcutaneous fat did not necessarily have a low proportion of intra-abdominal fat. A low proportion of carcass fat in the rib plus loin was associated with a high proportion in the shoulder (inter-breed correlation —0·7): both were measures of leanness. Muscle : bone ratio was not correlated with fatness or leanness. Slower maturing, larger breeds had slightly more bone, less fat and more lean in their higher-priced cuts. Breeds with heavier fleeces were fatter (0·7). The food conversion efficiency of a breed was largely independent of its body composition.

Milk consumption was estimated for crossbred suckled calves from birth to weaning during 2 years. Breed groups utilized were Aberdeen Angus (A) and Charolais (C) sires on Fl Angus-Hereford (and their reciprocals) dams in the 1st year and in the 2nd year, sires A and Nelore (Bos indicus) (N) were used on the same type of dam. The weigh-suckle-weigh technique was employed twice a day to estimate milk consumption on a weekly basis. Estimations were adjusted by least-squares for the effects of genetic group, week of estimation, and their interaction, with sex of calf and calf and cow weights in the week of estimation as covariables. Then a non-lineal regression equation of the form: y = b0Wb1e -b2b2W was fitted for each individual, where y = milk consumption and W = week of estimation. Curves for A and C were very close in their shape, but with a greater consumption (P < 0·01) for C. For the 2nd year, there were differences among A and N both in the shape of the curve and in consumption at the peak of lactation (P < 0·01). Differences in time to peak lactation were also found: for A calves, it was week 9, for C calves week 10 and for N calves week 3·8. The N group showed a sharper decline in persistency than the other groups, suggesting different patterns in milk consumption.

An experiment was carried out to compare silage-based and dried forage-based diets for finishing beef cattle and to examine the effects of protein supplementation and formaldehyde treatment of silage on performance and carcass composition. The four diets used consisted, on a dry matter basis, of (1) 700 g/kg formic acid-treated grass silage and 300 g/kg low protein cereal-based concentrate (LPC), (2) 720 g/kg formic acid-treated silage and 280 g/kg high protein cereal/fish meal concentrate, (3) 600 g/kg formaldehyde-treated silage and 400 g/kg LPC, and (4) 480 g/kg artificially dried grass and grass hay and 520 g/kg LPC. The silages were well preserved with 33 to 40 g ammonia N per kg total nitrogen. The diets were offered to 40 British Friesian castrated male cattle which were initially 387 (s.e. 2·9) kg live weight. For diets 1 to 4 respectively metabolizable energy intakes were 91·8, 94·7, 94·9 and 91·8 MJ/day; total nitrogen intakes 192, 234, 189 and 191 g/day; live-weight gains 0/89, 0/93, 0/86 and 0/82 (s.e. 0/045) kg/day; carcass gains 0·51, 0·52, 0·52, 0·52 and 0·50 (s.e. 0·33) kg/day; mean subcutaneous fat depths 5·6, 5·4, 5·3 and 6·0 (s.e. 0·41) mm; marbling scores 3·0, 3·3, 3·2 and 2·6 (s.e. 0·19) and areas of m. longissimus dorsi 65·7, 66·4, 64·7 and 64·3 (s.e. 1·66) cm2. It is concluded that performance, efficiency of energy utilization and carcass fatness were similar for a diet containing 700 g/kg well preserved grass silage and a dried forage-based diet with a similar intake of energy and protein. Protein supplementation of a diet based on formic acid-treated silage or formaldehyde treatment of silage did not affect performance or carcass fatness.

Post-partum interval to oestrus and conception was studied in relation to previous and current lactation (milk yield and lactation length), age of ewe and treatment with intravaginal sponges in a total of 186 Awassi ewes lambing in December/January. In the first trial, 62% of ewes, tested for oestrus twice a day with vasectomized rams until the end of May, showed oestrus between 1 and 170 days after lambing with a mean interval of 83 (s.d. 31·9) days. Neither current nor previous lactation had important effects on the rebreeding interval (P > 0·05). In another trial where ewes were exposed continuously to fertile rams until the end of March, 50% showed oestrus with a mean interval of 56 (s.d. 23·7) days (range 33 to 113 days). Of those showing oestrus, 86% conceived with a mean post-partum interval of 70 (s.d. 33·0) days (range 33 to 133 days). Lactation yield had no significant effect on the lambing-to-oestrus interval (P > 0·05) but ewes with longer lactations showed longer lambing-to-conception intervals (P > 0·01). Treatment with progesterone-impregnated vaginal sponges at 1, 2 and 3 months post partum showed an increase in the percentage of ewes showing oestrus from 35% to 75% and in those conceiving from 25% to 70% as the timing of treatment increased from 1 to 3 months post partum. It is concluded that lambing three times in 2 years is biologically feasible and that hormone treatment can facilitate its operation in practice.

Early-cut, precision-chopped (EP) and late-cut, flail-harvested (LF) silages were offered ad libitum to breeding ewes during mid and late pregnancy in two experiments. Silages offered in late pregnancy were factorially arranged with silages offered in mid pregnancy giving four silage treatments. Voluntary drymatter intake, ewe weight change, lamb birth weight and blood levels of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-OHB) and non-esterifiable free fatty acids (NEFA) were measured. The intake of LF silage was proportionately 0·61 and 0·72 of that of EP silage in mid and late pregnancy respectively. While type of silage given in mid pregnancy did not affect the mean silage intake in weeks 15 to 20 of pregnancy, the rate of decline in intake was higher and the intake during week 20 of pregnancy was lower following the feeding of EP silage in mid pregnancy. Despite a considerably lower level of body reserves associated with LF silage given in mid pregnancy, there was little effect on levels of 3-OHB or NEFA in late pregnancy or on lamb birth weight.

The phenotypie associations between scores for various types of non-fleece pigmentation and concentration isolated pigmented wool fibres in the fleece (experiment 1 and 2) or the piebald phenotype (experiment 3) were studied in Corriedale hogget ewes. These sheep were selected on the basis of either degree of nose skin pigmentation (experiment 1), presence or absence of pigmented fibres at the horn sites (experiment 2) and presence or absence of the piebald phenotype (experiment 3). Among affected fleeces the concentration of isolated pigmented fibres (PFC) had high correlations (0·96 and 0·97) with the proportion of staples affected, which indicates that when PFC is high the isolated pigmented fibres are widely distributed throughout the fleece. Three types of non-fleece pigmentation had significant (P < 0·05) positive correlations with PFC in experiments 1 and 2. These were pigmented skin on the nose lips (0·23 and 0·18; P < 0·05), pigmented fibres at the horn sites (0·34 and 0·30; P < 0·01) and pigmented fibres on the legs (0·36 and 0·29; P < 001). The pigmentation of skin or fibres in non-fleece areas was predominantly black/grey and there were usually significant (P < 0·05) positive correlations between the various types of non-fleece pigmentation. In experiment 3, piebald sheep were found to have higher scores for black/grey fibres on the ears (P < 0·001), face (P < 0·01) and horn sites (P < 0·05) and for black/grey skin under the tail (P < 0·01) than non-piebald sheep.

The response to long-term continuous infusion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone(GnRH)was monitored in progesterone-treated seasonally anoestrous ewes. Using osmotic pumps, groups of five ewes eachreceived 0(controls),125, 250, 500 or 1000 ng GnRH per h subcutaneously for a period of 21 days. Bloodsamples were collecte dat 30-minintervals from 6 h before until 24 h after the start of treatment and then for 8-h periods on days 2, 8, 15 and 21. After 21 days of treatment all the ewes were slaughtered to determine pituitary GnRH receptor numbers. Continuous infusion of GnRH resulted in a short-lived (2day)increase in plasma LH and oestradiol concentrations after which they were not different from the pre-treatment values. Over the later period of treatment when the pituitary gland was not responding to the exogenous GnRH(days 8, 15 and 21), LH episodes(presumably due to endogenous GnRH secretion fromthe hypothalamus) were observed. Continuous infusion of GnRH was also associated with a suppression in plasma FSH concentrations, the duration of which was dose-dependent. Only at the highest GnRH dose level(1000 ng/h)was there a significant reductionin pituitary GnRH receptor content.

Groups of wether lambs were grown at different rates from about 24 kg live weight to 50 kg, by feeding them different amounts of the same concentrate diet. The slow growing lambs had higher contents of protein, ash, calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P), and less fat and magnesium (Mg) than other groups. Differences in composition were significant between slow (120 g/day) and fast growth (230 g/day; P < 0-05) but not always between intermediate (160 g/day) and other growth rates. The differences became small and insignificant when data were expressed on a fat-free basis except for Mg which decreased with slow growth. Ash, for example, increased from 47 g/kg fat-free gain with fast growing animals to 54 g/kg with slow growth. Mg decreased from 0·44 g/kg fat-free gain with fast growth to 0·24 g/kg with slow growth. The data support the view that the ratio of ash to fat-free empty-body increases only slightly with age.

The basic diet contained 3·9 g Ca per kg dry matter and the effect of a substantial supplement of calcium carbonate on lambs growing at the fast rate was to increase their retentions of ash, Ca and P by a factor greater than 1·25. There are alternative explanations for this finding. One possibility is that the availability of Ca in the basic diet had been reduced by unknown factors. It is also possible that the supplementary carbonate altered the acid/base status of the animals and resulted in conditions which favoured skeletal mineralization.

The effects of the routine stressful stimuli of handling, transport and slaughter on the plasma concentrations of cortisol and β-endorphin have been studied in lambs. Blood samples were obtained from group 1 lambs after rounding up, after transport and at slaughter. Group 2 lambs were treated similarly except that blood was collected only at slaughter. Group 3 lambs served as controls and were blood sampled twice daily for 5 days to accustom them to handling before being slaughtered. Plasma cortisol and β-endorphin concentrations were increased above control levels by rounding up and transport, and were further increased at slaughter. Group 3 lambs, however, had very much lower β-endorphin levels at slaughter than the other two groups, although their cortisol levels were similar, β-endorphin concentrations declined during the 5-day blood sampling period in group 3 animals but cortisol levels were unchanged. The results suggest that although levels of both hormones are increased by stress, they are not necessarily released concomitantly.

The effect of consumption of saltbush and sodium chloride on energy metabolism in sheep was investigated. Twenty-four Awassi wethers were fed at maintenance level and allotted to three treatments: saltbush (Atriplex barclayana), salt (NaCl) and control. Daily mineral intakes with these diets were 149, 158 and 57 g, respectively. The saltbush had been irrigated with an equal-part mixture of seawater and fresh water and contained 15 g nitrogen and 310 g ash per kg. Energy and nitrogen balance were conducted using indirect calorimetry. The disappearance of organic matter and nitrogen from saltbush in the rumen was studied by the polyester bag technique.

Water intake of animals fed a high salt diet was 2·9 times higher and urine excretion was 3·7 times higher than in the control. Digested energy was proportionately 0·616 of dietary gross energy in the saltbush treatment, and 0·700 and 0·707 in the salt and control treatments respectively. Metabolizable energy (ME) was proportionately 0·795, 0·786 and 0·815 of digested energy, and heat production was 1·135, 1·043 and 0·867 of ME in the saltbush, salt and control treatments, respectively. The calculated values for digestible energy, ME, and net energy for maintenance on the saltbush diet were 5·02, 3·77 and 0·54 MJ/kg dry matter.

It is suggested that the low energetic utilization of saltbush is related to its low digestibility and the associated increase in energy expenditure, which are apparently related to mineral metabolism in the rumen. To maintain sheep on saltbush diets efforts should be made to lower the mineral content of this shrub.

In six experiments carried out on individually penned Finn Dorset ewes estimates were made of the quantities of non-ammonia nitrogen (NAN) reaching the abomasum and truly digested in the small intestine. For experiments 1 and 2 which each involved 33 ewes given a complete diet of milled hay and concentrates supplemented with varying amounts of a good-quality fish meal during late pregnancy, the overall regression estimate for the daily amount of truly digested NAN required for zero N retention (ewe plus conceptus) was 438 mg/kg M0·75 (441 and 434 for experiments 1 and 2 respectively). The coefficients for the efficiency of utilization of increments of truly digested NAN and maternal tissue N for net N accretion in the conceptus were 0·48 (s.e. 0·039) and 0·84 (s.e. 0·127) respectively.

In experiment 3, 24 lactating ewes had their diet supplemented with either soya-bean meal or fish meal. There was no effect of protein source on the amounts of NAN reaching the abomasum in ewes fitted with an abomasal cannula or on milk yield and these observations confirmed the unusually high degradability (measured by the polyester bag technique) of the fish-meal protein in the rumen. For experiments 4, 5 and 6 a total of 36 ewes were used to test the efficiency with which the NAN truly digested in the small intestine was used for the synthesis of milk protein. In the absence of data on the possible contribution of body tissue N to milk N the coefficient for the apparent efficiency of utilization of truly digested NAN when the ewes were given a basal diet containing approximately 10 g crude protein per MJ metabolizable energy was 0·63. For those ewes receiving the basal diet supplemented with either soya-bean meal, fish meal or blood meal the coefficients for the efficiency of utilization for the production of milk N of the increments in truly digested NAN supplied by the three protein sources were 0·61, 0·54 and 0·29 respectively. It is suggested that the low coefficient for blood meal may be due to its low content of methionine.

A total of 96 gilts were used in two experiments to determine the effect of live weight and body composition at about 170 days of age on age of attainment of puberty, ovulation rate and subsequent reproductive efficiency.

In the first experiment 48 crossbred (Large White ♂ × Landrace ♀) gilts were randomly allocated at 21 days of age to each of six treatment groups which gave six different intakes of a protein-adequate diet. The food intakes were designed to achieve six live weights ranging from 59·6 to 118·0 kg at boar introduction at 170 days of age. Age at puberty declined linearly from 202 to 173 days with increasing live weight at boar introduction (P < 0·01). Ovulation rate at puberty was also positively affected by live weight at 170 days (P < 0·05).

In the second experiment, four littermates from each of 12 litters were randomly allocated at 28 days of age to four treatment groups. The groups were offered diets of varying protein adequacy at different feeding levels up to boar introduction at 165 days of age. The treatment groups comprised a factorial design with the factors being live weight (light, L or heavy, H) and fat level (lean, 1 or fat, f relative fat content). At boar introduction, mean live weights were 70·6, 71·5, 101·3 and 100·0 kg, and mean backfat depths were 11·3, 20·9, 21·7 and 27·0 mm for the LI, Lf, HI and Hf groups, respectively. Heavier gilts at boar introduction were younger (183 v. 199 days, P < 0·01) at puberty. Ovulation rate at puberty was also greater (11·0 v. 9·5, P < 0·05) in the heavier gilts. Gilts which were leaner at boar introduction also tended to attain puberty earlier (186 v. 195 days, P < 0·10) than fatter gilts.

In both experiments neither the subsequent reproductive efficiency of gilts after parturition nor the performance of their piglets was significantly affected by body weight or body composition at boar introduction.

Digestible (DE) and metabolizable (ME) energy values for five copra meals and a sample of raw copra, with oil contents ranging from 4 to 662 g/kg, were determined with both a high and a low energy basal diet in a metabolism experiment using 16 female pigs. Determined DE values ranged from 12·68 to 29·92 MJ/kg dry matter (DM) and values for ME from 11·95 to 29·08 MJ/kg DM which was a reflexion of their residual oil contents. Regression equations for the six samples were derived with DE and ME as dependent variables and chemical measurements and gross energy as independent variables. The best equation based on a single chemical parameter (ether extract (EE)) was:

Improvements associated with including more than one independent variable in the regression analysis were marginal. The most accurate equation (in terms of minimized residual s.d.) based on EE and crude fibre (CF) was:

Gonadotrophin profiles during the follicular phase of the cycle prior to a synchronized mating and LH and progesterone profiles at days 2, 6 and 10 post mating were investigated in three groups of 16 ewes. of one group were given 0·5 × estimated metabolizable energy requirements for maintenance (MEM) from 14 days before mating until slaughter 11 days after mating (LL). Ewes of a second group were given 1·5 × MEM during the 14 days prior to mating and then 0·5 × MEM thereafter (HL) and the remaining ewes (HH) were given 1·5 × maintenance throughout the experiment. During the day before mating, plasma samples were collected at 10-min intervals for 8 h and assayed for LH and FSH. Samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 8 h on days 2, 6 and 10 after mating. Each ewe was then injected intravenously with 10 μg LH and samples were collected for a further 3 h. All of these samples were assayed for LH and progesterone. Nutritional treatment did not affect mean follicular phase concentrations of FSH or LH or mean LH pulse amplitude but the mean LH pulse frequency (pulses per h) of LL ewes was lower than that of HH + HL ewes (0·37 v. 0·48; P < 0·05). After mating, mean LH concentrations were unaffected by sampling date or nutritional treatment but the mean LH pulse frequency was lower in HL + LL than HH ewes at day 2 (0·25 v. 0·40; P < 0·01) and day 10 (0·28 v. 0·38; P < 0·05). Mean progesterone concentrations (ng/1) were higher in HL + LL than HH ewes at day 10 (6·77 v. 4·80; P < 0·05) but pulse frequency was not significantly affected. Injection of 10 μg LH on days 2, 6 and 10 after mating was followed by a significant increase in progesterone concentrations. The progesterone response was greater (P < 0·05) in LL + HL ewes than in HH ewes. It is concluded that increased rates of embryo mortality often associated with undernutrition are unlikely to be related to lower circulating progesterone levels per se but may be attributable to reductions in mean LH pulse frequency and consequent changes in progesterone profiles.

Data from two selected lines of pigs in closed herds of a breeding company were collected over a 5-year period. The lines were selected for growth rate and leanness and were housed together in the same environment. Animals were performance tested from 35 kg for about 58 days, and were fed individually according to a scale determined by time on test; the boars were more liberally fed than the gilts. At the end of test, average daily gain (ADG) values were calculated and ultrasonic measures were taken of fat depths at the shoulder (SF), loin (LF) and last rib, 4·5 cm (CF) and 8 cm (KF) off the mid line.

Estimates of heritabilities, phenotypic and genetic correlations were obtained from paternal half-sib analyses. All heritability estimates were significantly different from zero and ranged from 0·18 to 0·42 for ADG and from 0·21 to 0·59 for fat depths. The genetic correlations between ADG and fat measurements in boars of the two lines were not significantly different from zero, averaging 0·08; in the gilts they were negative, averaging –0·39.

After long-term selection, appreciable genetic variation remained in the closed lines studied here for growth rate and fat depths. Although sex and feeding level were confounded, it is likely that the genetic correlation between growth rate and fat depth was influenced by the level of feeding and associated with partitioning of energy between lean and fat deposition.
