The history of sodomy carries a long association with magic, the occult, and alternative forms of knowledge. This connection persists in relation to homosexuality, most obviously in the figure of the fairie (with its associations of enchantment) and with the poetic experience of “magic” or “mystical” forms of alternative knowledge in queer countercultures. This chapter explores the way that two gay San Francisco Bay Area groups — the Beats and the Berkeley Renaissance — took magic, spiritualism, and other forms of alternative knowledge as central to their poetics and authorial practice. Mystical forms of sexuality offer modes of contact at a time when physical intimacy was outlawed and heavily policed in midcentury America. Further, this chapter argues, contemporary poets writing in the wake of these midcentury movements offer new ways to understand how these mystical forms of sexuality constitute institutional critique.

Self concept is an evolving sense of self that encompasses work, expression of potential, and purpose for being. Self concept is more encompassing than identity, and includes motivations, beliefs such as self-efficacy, attributions and construals, mental models of self, and social roles. Self concept grows and evolves through life and transitions, but only seldom does the whole self concept come up for review and revision. Narrative construction provided an approach to examining how the stories individuals tell about themselves shape and help create their evolving self concept. The evolution of self concept is reviewed in light of the operation of the transition experiences – cognitive flexibility, generative intelligence, personal intelligences, motivation, and purpose through the use of retrospective interviews with twenty-four elite performers in three domains (business, sports, and music) who successfully and repeatedly transitioned to higher positions within their field.

This chapter explores fiction of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century in the twin contexts of American writing after postmodernism and climate change. It argues that Ruth L. Ozeki’s My Year of Meat and Jonathan Franzen’s Purity both ultimately undermine the connection between individual agency and effective political action – the former because of its vacillating metamodernist sensibility, and the latter as a consequence of the author’s retreat to realism and undermining of character – but that Richard Powers’s The Echo Maker, by gesturing towards a posthumanist perspective, intimates a way through the impasse.

It is exactly because literary language relies on the stylistic possibilities afforded by indirection that queer literary studies established such strong connections between indirection and the representation of queer content. It’s not only that queer content had to be reframed to be socially acceptable and publishable, though that certainly was an element. Rather, indirection itself tended to be a hallmark of both the literariness and the queerness of literary writing. This chapter examines some key examples of textual repression, latency, and queer sublimation in a range of texts by Charles Brockden Brown, Edward Prime-Stevenson, Henry James, Nella Larsen, Lillian Hellman, and James Purdy. Alongside those readings it animates an investigation of textual content by tracing key theorists of these literary strategies, most significantly Barbara Johnson and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. The chapter demonstrates how these quite particular questions, related to historical shifts in the representation of queer content, quickly settle into more general discipline-specific areas of enquiry.

The family of the Szekeres–Szafron, shell solutions of Einstein’s equations, is derived and discussed in detail. The discussion contains, among other things, the interpretation of the Szekeres coordinates, the invariant definitions of the whole family, the class II ($\beta,_z = 0$) family as a limit of the class I family, matching the Szekeres metric to the Schwarzschild metric (the class II S metric can be matched to Schwarzschild only inside the event horizon), conditions for absence of shell crossings, the description of the mass dipole, the apparent horizons, the Goode–Wainwright representation and a brief listing of recommended further reading on geometric and astrophysical properties of these solutions.

The chapter presents a vision of Berlin after socialisation of housing, as proposed by DWE. It details the organisational structure of a new institution (Anstalt öffentlicher Rechts) that would manage this housing democratically. It explains the legal rules for calculating the compensation to the expropriated landlords. It also compares the non-profit-oriented architecture with the ‘architecture of financialisation’: the housing built by the corporate landlords.

This essay on the American literary history of trans before the inception of modern transness examines such practices and their critiques prior to modern technologies and taxonomies of trans subjecthood. By reading slave narratives, poetry, short fiction, and other genres from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries, the chapter unravels the preoccupation with individual figures as trans or otherwise gender diverse in order to highlight how the uneven processes of colonial biopolitics attempt to discipline the messiness of lived collective expressions and embodied experiences. By foregrounding works on transing and gendering by Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian writers alongside writings better known about white gender nonconformity, this chapter unsettles the racial innocence of transness and triumphalist claims about gender variance as universal. Through attending to structures that produce embodied legibility and practices of meaning-making, the aim is to orient readers to historically informed and theoretically nuanced ways of reading American literature before the twentieth century against tendencies to approach transness through the overrepresentation of whiteness.

Chapter 1 provides an overview of how this project fits into the broader categories of critical eating studies and critical animal studies. Through a reading of Byron’s The Corsair, it offers an example of some of the book’s central arguments: that the development of vegetarianism and veganism must be understood as the result of an east–west dialogic relationship rather than as a one-way process of cultural transmission; that religion will often be used to explain away an individual’s dietary choice; that the connections with gender of vegetarianism and veganism are more complicated than has often been suggested.

The chapter examines imaginative writing about AIDS in light of improved medical treatments for HIV, suggesting that every example of AIDS literature functions as a time capsule documenting its historical moment. Yet, the literature of AIDS is haunted by unfinished pasts that scramble its temporalities and unfix its historical locations. This chapter introduces and conceptualizes an emerging “literature of PrEP” (pre-exposure prophylaxis) in work by Jericho Brown, Matthew Lopez, Jacques Rancourt, and Sam Sax, showing how developments in biomedicine have inspired diverse literary reflections on the epidemic’s four-decade history. As exemplified by Lopez’s epic play The Inheritance, PrEP literature engages crucial questions concerning what one queer generation inherits from, or owes to, another. The chapter argues that, in contrast to scientific or sociological accounts of HIV/AIDS, literary representation is uniquely effective at capturing the haunted quality of AIDS writing because it can reveal how ostensibly outmoded forms of the past persist in the present.

A systematic review of the Classical, Late Antique, and Byzantine sources that underpin the study of Antioch.

What is an international organization? Intergovernmental agreements often create new institutions such as the United Nations which have independent status and some autonomy. This chapter considers how these organizations come into being and how they are studied by scholars of international politics and law. Depending on how one looks at things, an international organization can appear as an actor in world politics, a place where politics happens, or a resource used by others in political fights. These are the roles of actor, forum, and resource. I examine the main scholarly theories that are often applied to understand the function and effects of international organizations in international relations: realism, liberalism, constructivism, and marxism.

The Conclusion argues that the reasonable person possesses an essence that can be traced across time and across the different jurisdictions we encountered. This essence concerns the concept’s fundamental acceptance that ours is always just one perspective among many and that the best way to understand and assess what others think, do and feel is to empathise with those others. Since the standard is not always understood or applied in this manner, the Conclusion offers a restatement of the function and rationale of the common law’s most illustrious character; the aim is to contribute to the realisation of the concept’s potential and to make it easier to identify instances of misuse. The section unfolds in three parts, which correspond to the three steps of judgement making through empathetic perspective taking: the intention to take the reasonable person’s perspective; the assumption of the reasonable person’s perspective; and the making of a judgement by reference to the reasonable person’s perspective. Ultimately the Conclusion argues that the concept of the reasonable person has significant potential to facilitate the making of tolerant and humane judgements in a diverse, globalised and dynamic society, provided that one remembers that the reasonable person is always someone else.

This chapter explores intellectual responses to disasters and the creation and use of the disaster-divine wrath discourse as it spread from homilies to histories over time. It argues for centering human responses to disaster as the way forward using critical disaster theory.
