To select as the subject of a study of limited size a topic as fundamental and, additionally, one so long discussed as has been the case with literary practice greatly risks—and we are fully aware of this—appearing to be an undertaking which is both presumptuous (how many studies, sometimes major ones, have been devoted to this question during recent decades?) and doomed to failure (is it serious to presume, in a few pages, to deal, even partially, with so vast and so complex a subject?). However, one precise reason causes us to think that it is time, today, to re-examine this ancient problem in new terms. The field of French literary research is at present characterized by a major institutional and ideological fact, the massive reality of which certain particular or collective efforts, no matter how remarkable these might be, cannot cover over. An airtight seal continues to separate, globally, traditional literary research from recent studies produced by certain linguists and speech historians in the domain of linguistic practices. Whence this scientifically paradoxical consequence: studies dealing with fundamentally similar objects—discursive practices—are presently being conducted in parallel, on the basis of theoretical premises which are radically opposed in most cases, with each one almost absolutely ignorant of the others. This situation, we believe, is exceedingly harmful to literary research. By making all interdisciplinary relation impossible as well as inhibiting certain questioning necessary within the realm of this research, it contributes to blocking progress in large measure. Need we point out that we nourish no naive hopes of overturning within the space of a few pages a situation whose roots, both institutional and ideological, are so deep? Nor does one distinguish oneself more by providing definitive answers for these basic problems which we propose discussing here, answers which one might even believe possible to guarantee as fully correct. We would only like to attempt to prove, by re-examining in new terms some fundamental problems of literary theory, the advantage which this theory might be able to find in certain data drawn from linguistics and the “analysis of discourse”, and inversely to propose certain theoretical readjustments which a specific reflection on literary practice seems to make necessary in the field of these two disciplines, particularly in that of the second. The pages which follow should, therefore, only be taken for what they are: an attempt, limited in its scope and problematic in its conclusions, to break down some barriers and to open a breach at certain critical points.

My purpose in this paper is to present a non-Marxist conception of exploitation. While this analysis of exploitation may share features with a Marxist conception, its acceptability is not dependent upon a prior agreement with that world view.

A study of the physics of separating and reattaching flows around bodies with sharp edges is reported. Data from direct numerical simulations of the flow around a rectangular cylinder with aspect ratio 5 at different Reynolds numbers are used. The flow is decomposed into multiple interacting flow phenomena such as the laminar boundary layer in the front face, the separated shear layer, the flow impingement at reattachment, the reverse boundary layer within the recirculating bubble and the near- and far-wake flow. A detailed analysis of the physics of these phenomena is provided, including the slow modulation induced by large-scale instabilities related with vortex shedding. The entrainment phenomena acting along the separated shear layer and their unbalance between its inner and outer sides are recognised as fundamental mechanisms determining the tendency of the flow to reattach and the overall fluxes of momentum and heat. The behaviour of entrainment is found to be strictly related with the shear-layer velocity difference that in turn is determined by the behaviour of the reverse boundary layer and by its strength in counteract adverse pressure gradients. The physical understanding of the compound role played by these and all the other mechanisms composing the flow, poses the basis for the formulation of theoretical frameworks able to unify all these interacting phenomena. Finally, the present work provides access to high-fidelity flow statistics of relevance for benchmark activities on bluff bodies with sharp edges.

A single male specimen of Goneplacid crab, Carcinoplax haswelli (Miers, 1884) is recorded for the first time from the Indian Ocean. The crab specimen was collected from the trawl bycatch landing of the commercial demersal trawler operated between 30 and 150 m depth along the Gujarat coastal region, Northwest coast of India. This C. haswelli is previously recorded from northern Australia and Taiwan to South China Sea. Until now, C. haswelli is not observed or recorded from the Indian Ocean. In the present study, detailed information regarding the taxonomic identification and previous distribution of the goneplacid crab, C. haswelli is described.

Three gels of illitic composition having different octahedral substitutions were hydrothermally treated in distilled water at 300°C and 500 bars for 7 to 90 days. The gel of the composition K0.7Al2.0(Si3.3Al0.7)O10(OH)2, having no octahedral substitutions, yielded poorly crystalline and randomly interstratified illite/smectite (I/S) having possibly 30% or more expandability. These I/S particles occurred predominantly as foliated or compact lamellar aggregates having morphological features characteristic of common smectite. Laths having a morphology similar to that of diagenetic “fibrous illites” were also found in small amounts after the gel had been aged for 35 days. Their chemical composition was similar to that of the foliated aggregates of I/S in the same run.

Illitic gel having the composition K0.7(Al1.7Fe3+0.3)(Si3.3Al0.7)O10(OH)2 having octahedral Fe3+ substitutions yielded more and better crystalline I/S. The reaction products of the 7-35-day runs consisted mainly of randomly interstratified I/S having an expandability of 90 to 65%. The I/S particles occurred as foliated or compact lamellar aggregates having a smectite-like morphology, as described above. The Fe3+-bearing gel yielded, after 90 days of ageing, an Rl-ordered I/S having 25% expandability and a morphology of ribbons and hexagonal platelets.

Illitic gel of composition K0.8Al1.6Mg0.4)(Si3.6Al0.4)O10(OH)2 having octahedral Mg2+ substitutions produced no illite even after 90 days of ageing, but a pure smectite in the form of foliated aggregates.

The structure of sepiolite from a piston core obtained on Ninetyeast Ridge in the Indian Ocean was modified by exposure to ethylene glycol vapor. With ethylene glycol, the sepiolite Oil X-ray powder diffraction peak expanded from 12.4 to 12.8 Å, and the 130 peak contracted from 4.53 to about 4.45 Å. The cell modification is consistent with concomitant expansion along the c-axis and contraction along the b-axis. This structural distortion is not permanent, however, inasmuch as the sepiolite returned to its original state 6 to 12 hr after it was removed from the ethylene glycol-saturated atmosphere.

The effect of pH on the flocculation-dispersion behavior of noncrystalline aluminum and iron oxides, kaolinite, montmorillonite, and various mixtures of these materials was investigated. The clays were Na- or Ca-saturated and freeze-dried before use. Critical coagulation concentrations (CCC) of all materials and mixtures were found to be pH dependent. The Al oxide was flocculated at pH >9.5 and the iron oxide was flocculated between pH 6.0 and 8.2; i.e., flocculation occurred at pHs near the point of zero charge (PZC). The CCC of both the Na- and Ca-clay systems increased with increasing pH. The effect of pH was greater for the Na-kaolinite (flocculated at pH 5.8 and having a CCC of 55 meq/liter at pH 9.1) than the Na-montmorillonite system (having a CCC of 14 meq/liter at pH 6.4 and a CCC of 28 meq/liter at pH 9.4). A 50/50 mixture of Na-kaolinite and Na-montmorillonite behaved more like montmorillonite (having CCCs of 13 and 33 meq/liter at pH 6.2 and pH 9.0, respectively). The presence of either noncrystalline oxide decreased the CCC over that of the clay(s) alone; the decrease occurred at pHs >7 for Al oxide and at pHs >6.5 for Fe oxide. Aluminum oxide produced a greater decrease in CCC than Fe oxide, especially at pHs >8. The effect of each oxide on CCC was greatest near the PZC, 9.5 and 7.2 for Al and Fe oxide, respectively.

In the following essay we shall try to show how a society uses the notion of “Foreigner,” how the image which it creates of something extraneous to it is only secondarily a means of conceiving the world, a would-be scientific approach to big problems, but is essentially an ideology for its own internal use and forms an integral part of a political play which takes place within the society itself. We thought that the example of ancient Greece, and particularly of Athens, might present a particularly interesting field for analysis, since for two centuries it had the problem of the Persian Empire's vicinity—a problem which the Greek thinkers and politicians never stopped studying, each following his own point of view; the variations of which seem to us extremely instructive.

The acid-catalyzed reaction between methanol and isobutene to give methyl-t-butyl ether may be carried out using a cation-exchanged smectite as the catalyst. In 1,4-dioxan solvent at 60°C smectites exchanged with Al3+, Fe3+, or Cr3+ give yields of ∼60% after 4 hr, whereas smectites exchanged with Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ca2+, and Na+ give less than ∼8% yield. The reaction is efficient only when certain solvents are used, e.g., with Al3+-smectite the yield is ∼5% when using 1,2-dimethoxyethane, diethyleneglycol diethylether, n-pentane, tetrahydropyran, N-methylmorpholine, or tetrahydrofuran solvents compared with ∼60% using 1,4-dioxan solvent (4 hr). Moreover, the effective solvents depend somewhat on the clay interlayer cation. The use of tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran gives ∼35% yields at 60°C (4 hr) with Fe3+- or Cr3+-smectites but ∼4% yield with Al3+-smectite.

Early supplementation with oregano essential oil (EO) in milk replacer (MR) may improve growth, immune responses, the microbiota and the metabolome in dairy calves during pre-weaning and in adulthood. Sixteen female dairy calves (3 days of age) were divided in two groups (n = 8/group): the control group (no EO) and the EO group (0.23 ml of EO in MR during 45 days). After weaning, calves were kept in a feedlot and fed ad libitum. The animals were weighed, and blood and faecal samples were collected on days 3 (T0), 45 (T1) and 370 (T2) to measure the biochemical profile and characterise peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs; CD4+, CD8+, CD14+, CD21+ and WC1+), the metabolome and microbiota composition. The EO group only had greater average daily weight gain during the suckling (EO supplementation) period (P = 0.030). The EO group showed higher average CD14+ population (monocytes) values, a lower abundance of Ruminococcaceae UCG-014, Faecalibacterium, Blautia and Alloprevotella and increased abundances of Allistipes and Akkermansia. The modification of some metabolites in plasma, such as butyric acid, 3-indole-propionic acid and succinic acid, particularly at T1, are consistent with intestinal microbiota changes. The data suggest that early EO supplementation increases feed efficiency only during the suckling period with notable changes in the microbiota and plasma metabolome; however, not all of these changes can be considered desirable from a gut health point of view. Additional research studies is required to demonstrate that EOs are a viable natural alternative to antibiotics for improving calf growth performance and health.

Paris. The Place de Grève is teeming with the city's idle seeking relief from their boredom. Street-singers, story-tellers and showmen are encircled by groups of people in varying moods—some sullen, others eager, some distracted, others attentive. Sweets vendors, mercers and lampoonists attract customers by their words and gestures. A little apart from the crowd, men with grave faces seem to be waiting for something: they are the unemployed, keeping an eye out for a possible hirer. On some days a drumroll precedes several men-at-arms escorting a condemned man and his executioner to the place of execution; the festive atmosphere turns suddenly somber, the crowd becomes silent. If scattered jeers and taunts are heard, more often than not it is just to relieve the tension.

The Place de Grève gave its name to the French word for strike, greve. And perhaps something still remains of the liveliness of that gathering-place in today's strikes. The Spanish word for strike, huelga, is near to juerga, Spanish for amusement or diversion. The English “strike,” the German streik, the Italian sciopero, all connote fighting, an exchange of blows. The words themselves thus suggest that a strike may be both militant and festive.

Smectite close to the pure Fe end member of the nontronite-beidellite series was found in the fine clay separated from a 354-cm deep sediment core in the southwestern Pacific Basin. The mineral has a b-axis of 9.09 Å and an unusually low dehydroxylation temperature of 454°C and is composed of sheaves of fibers less than 50 Å wide. Its charge density is 5.09 × 10~4 esu/cm2. The charge originates mainly from the presence of 18% of the total Fe in tetrahedral positions, as determined by Mössbauer analysis. Slight deviations of the infrared spectra from those reported for nontronites are probably due to the presence of more octahedral Mg. The presence of authigenic quartz in the same sample permits some speculation on the concentration of dissolved silicon during nontronite genesis. A δ18O value of 26 ± 0.3‰ indicates a temperature of formation of about 22°C. The Sr isotope ratio suggests that the nontronite formed at least 12 million years ago.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds, described by the formula [Zn1-xAlx(OH)2][(CO3)x/2 · nH2O], were prepared by coprecipitation methods at 80°C and characterized by bulk chemical analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and scanning-transmission electron microscopy (STEM). An x value of 0.33 was previously assumed to be an upper limit, but recently, Al-rich hydrotalcite-like compounds have been prepared with x as large as 0.44 by hydrothermal synthesis. In the Zn-Al system, Al-rich hydrotalcite was synthesized at normal pressure by coprecipitation. Zn-Al hydrotalcite-like compounds were obtained in the range of x = 0.3 to 0.4. An Al-rich hydrotalcite-like compound with x = 0.44 was formed in mixtures containing large amounts of a poorly crystalline Zn-Al phase. A continuous contraction of the hydrotalcite-like structure occurred as x increased, both the a and c lattice parameters decreasing for x values as large as 0.44. This study illustrates the advantages of using quantitative analytical electron microscopy with high spatial resolution to complement conventional (and bulk) characterization techniques for correlating structural and compositional characteristics of finely divided materials.

Let us imagine that we decided to visit cities at different places in the world. During our journey we would probably consult often one or more of these books known as “travel guides,” which, in our case, describe one or more cities for the benefit of the traveler who knows nothing about them or has only a slight idea of what they are like.

Presumably we would be told not infrequently that in the cities being described something is “reflected” - that the city architecture of Paris reflects the immortality - obsessed self-glorification of French kings, emperors, or national presidents; that the baroque layout of Rome reflects the triumphant Catholicism of the counter- Reformation ; that the skyscrapers of Manhattan reflect the unbridled creativity of American civilization.

Ferrous or ferric Perchlorate, 0.01 M, was reacted with calcite in stirred aqueous suspensions which were bubbled vigorously with an oxidizing purge gas. Two and three equivalents of CaCO3 were dissolved per mole of Fe2+ and Fe3+ neutralized, respectively. With Fe(ClO4)2, the crystalline Fe oxide products partially coated the calcite surface. The dominant products were lepidocrocite and goethite when the purge gas was air or 20% CO2 (balance air), respectively. After reaction with Fe2+ the edges and corners of the calcite crystals were generally rounded and the faces were non-uniformly pitted; however, after reaction with Fe3+, a mosaic pattern with distinct ridges and channels was evident on the calcite. These ridges were somewhat pitted, but distinct stepped dislocations were present leading to a featureless and generally flat channel floor. When the calcite was separated from the Fe solution by a semi-permeable membrane, precipitation occurred predominantly on the calcite side and on the Fe side of the membrane in the Fe2+ and Fe3+ systems, respectively.

Fe oxyhydroxides precipitated from the Fe(ClO4)3 and Fe(ClO4)2 solutions by different mechanisms. In the Fe(ClO4)3 system, although the initial reaction may have been at the calcite surface, the bulk of the poorly crystalline ferrihydrite was formed by hydrolysis of Fe polymers in suspension. Neutralization occurred by the reaction with basic products of a surface-controlled dissolution of calcite, rather than by a direct reaction of acidic polymers with the calcite surface. In the Fe(ClO4)2 system, lepidocrocite or goethite formed by the partial hydrolysis of Fe2+ or Fe3+ by reaction with calcite or the basic products of calcite dissolution and subsequent precipitation of simple Fe species on existing FeOOH nuclei.
