Let $(\xi_k,\eta_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T\,{:\!=}\, (T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k\,{:\!=}\, \xi_1+\cdots+\xi_{k-1}+\eta_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$ . Consider a general branching process generated by T and let $N_j(t)$ denote the number of the jth generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$ . We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations j which do not depend on t. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell theorem and the key renewal theorem, prove a strong law of large numbers for $N_j$ , and find the first-order asymptotics for the variance of $N_j$ . Also, we prove a functional limit theorem for the vector-valued process $(N_1(ut),\ldots, N_j(ut))_{u\geq0}$ , properly normalized and centered, as $t\to\infty$ . The limit is a vector-valued Gaussian process whose components are integrated Brownian motions.

Parrondo’s coin-tossing games were introduced as a toy model of the flashing Brownian ratchet in statistical physics but have emerged as a paradigm for a much broader phenomenon that occurs if there is a reversal in direction in some system parameter when two similar dynamics are combined. Our focus here, however, is on the original Parrondo games, usually labeled A and B. We show that if the parameters of the games are allowed to be arbitrary, subject to a fairness constraint, and if the two (fair) games A and B are played in an arbitrary periodic sequence, then the rate of profit can not only be positive (the so-called Parrondo effect), but can also be arbitrarily close to 1 (i.e. 100%).

In this paper, we extend the strong laws of large numbers and entropy ergodic theorem for partial sums for tree-indexed nonhomogeneous Markov chains fields to delayed versions of nonhomogeneous Markov chains fields indexed by a homogeneous tree. At first we study a generalized strong limit theorem for nonhomogeneous Markov chains indexed by a homogeneous tree. Then we prove the generalized strong laws of large numbers and the generalized asymptotic equipartition property for delayed sums of finite nonhomogeneous Markov chains indexed by a homogeneous tree. As corollaries, we can get the similar results of some current literatures. In this paper, the problem settings may not allow to use Doob's martingale convergence theorem, and we overcome this difficulty by using Borel–Cantelli Lemma so that our proof technique also has some new elements compared with the reference Yang and Ye (2007).

In this paper we consider a new type of urn scheme, where the selection probabilities are proportional to a weight function, which is linear but decreasing in the proportion of existing colours. We refer to it as the de-preferential urn scheme. We establish the almost-sure limit of the random configuration for any balanced replacement matrix R. In particular, we show that the limiting configuration is uniform on the set of colours if and only if R is a doubly stochastic matrix. We further establish the almost-sure limit of the vector of colour counts and prove central limit theorems for the random configuration as well as for the colour counts.

In this paper, we are going to study the strong limit theorem for the relative entropy density rates between two finite asymptotically circular Markov chains. Firstly, we prove some lammas on which the main result based. Then, we establish two strong limit theorem for non-homogeneous Markov chains. Finally, we obtain the main result of this paper. As corollaries, we get the strong limit theorem for the relative entropy density rates between two finite non-homogeneous Markov chains. We also prove that the relative entropy density rates between two finite non-homogeneous Markov chains are uniformly integrable under some conditions.

We give a simple proof of the strong law of large numbers with rates, assuming only finite variance. This note also serves as an elementary introduction to the theory of large deviations, assuming only finite variance, even when the random variables are not necessarily independent.

We show that under some slight assumptions, the positive sojourn time of a product of symmetric processes converges towards ½ as the number of processes increases. Monotony properties are then exhibited in the case of symmetric stable processes, and used, via a recurrence relation, to obtain upper and lower bounds on the moments of the occupation time (in the first and third quadrants) for two-dimensional Brownian motion. Explicit values are also given for the second and third moments in the n-dimensional Brownian case.

In this paper, we give the definition of tree-indexed Markov chains in random environment with countable state space, and then study the realization of Markov chain indexed by a tree in random environment. Finally, we prove the strong law of large numbers and Shannon–McMillan theorem for Markov chains indexed by a Cayley tree in a Markovian environment with countable state space.

A sequence of random variables is said to be extended negatively dependent (END) if the tails of its finite-dimensional distributions in the lower-left and upper-right corners are dominated by a multiple of the tails of the corresponding finite-dimensional distributions of a sequence of independent random variables with the same marginal distributions. The goal of this paper is to establish the strong law of large numbers for a sequence of END and identically distributed random variables. In doing so we derive some new inequalities of large deviation type for the sums of END and identically distributed random variables being suitably truncated. We also show applications of our main result to risk theory and renewal theory.

Let K be a d-dimensional convex body with a twice continuously differentiable boundary and everywhere positive Gauss-Kronecker curvature. Denote by Kn the convex hull of n points chosen randomly and independently from K according to the uniform distribution. Matching lower and upper bounds are obtained for the orders of magnitude of the variances of the sth intrinsic volumes Vs(Kn) of Kn for s ∈ {1,…,d}. Furthermore, strong laws of large numbers are proved for the intrinsic volumes of Kn. The essential tools are the economic cap covering theorem of Bárány and Larman, and the Efron-Stein jackknife inequality.

For a sequence of blockwise m-dependent random variables {Xn,n ≥ 1}, conditions are provided under which $\lim_{n\to\infty}(\sum_{i=1}^nX_i)/b_n=0$ almost surely where {bn,n ≥ 1} is a sequence of positive constants. The results are new even when bn ≡ nr,r > 0. As special case, the Brunk-Chung strong law of large numbers is obtained for sequences of independent random variables. The current work also extends results of Móricz [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.101 (1987) 709–715], and Gaposhkin [Teor. Veroyatnost. i Primenen. 39 (1994) 804–812]. The sharpness of the results is illustrated by examples.

This paper raises the following question: let {Φn(A), A ⊂ ℝd} be a Poisson process with intensity nf(x), x ∈ ℝd and let c(Xi | Φn) be a Voronoi tile with nucleus Xi (a jump point of Φn). Let μ(.) denote Lebesgue measure in ℝd. Is it true that, for any bounded measurable subset B of ℝd, ∑Xi∈Bμ(c(Xi| Φn)) → μ(B) almost surely as n → ∞ only if f > 0 almost everywhere? This statement can be viewed as the strong law of large numbers for Voronoi tessellation. Though the positive answer may seem ‘obvious’, we could not find any such statement, especially for arbitrary measurable B and nonhomogeneous Poisson processes. For B with the boundary of Lebesgue measure 0 the proof is simple. We prove in this paper that the statement is true for ℝ1.

Whole genome amplification is important for multipoint mapping by sperm or oocyte typing and genetic disease diagnosis. Polymerase chain reaction is not suitable for amplifying long DNA sequences. This paper studies a new technique, designated PEP-primer-extension-preamplification, for amplifying long DNA sequences using the theory of branching processes. A mathematical model for PEP is constructed and a closed formula for the expected target yield is obtained. A central limit theorem and a strong law of large numbers for the number of kth generation target sequences are proved.

Assume a given sequence of events to be strongly mixing at a polynomial or exponential rate. We show that the conclusion of the second Borel-Cantelli lemma holds if the series of the probabilities of the events diverges at a certain rate depending on the mixing rate of the events. An application to necessary moment conditions for the strong law of large numbers is given.

Availability is an important characteristic of a system. Different types of availability are defined. For the case when a sequence of bivariate random variables of lifetime and repair time are i.i.d. certain properties have been established previously. In practice, however, we need to consider the situation where these bivariate random variables are independent but not identically distributed. Properties of two measures of availability for the i.i.d. case are extended to this more general case.

For each positive integer n, let Sn be the nth partial sum of a sequence of i.i.d. random variables which assume the values +1 and −1 with respective probabilities p and 1 – p, having mean μ= 2p − 1. Tables to the 99.99 percentile of some of these distributions, as well as a limiting distribution, are given for the special case of a symmetric simple random walk (p = 1/2).

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for in terms of , where Sn is the sum of n i.i.d. random variables with values in]0, ∞[, and A ≧ 0. We use these results to give a probabilistic proof of the ‘explosion criterion' for continuous-time Markov branching processes, which is usually shown analytically.

In this paper, a very general class of branching processes on the d-dimensional square lattice is studied. It is assumed that the division rates as well as the spatial distribution of offspring are configuration-dependent. The main interest of this paper is in the asymptotic geometrical behaviour of such processes. Utilizing techniques mainly due to Richardson [28], we derive conditions which are necessary and sufficient for such branching processes to have the following property: there exists a norm N(·) on Rd such that, for all 0 < ∊ < 1, we have that almost surely for all sufficiently large t, all sites in the N-ball of radius (1 – ∊)t are contained in (the set of sites occupied at time t) and is contained in the set of all sites in the N-ball of radius (1 + ∊)t (given that the process starts with finitely many particles).

In this paper the global behaviour of percolation processes on the d-dimensional square lattice is studied. Using techniques of Richardson (1973) we prove, under weak moment assumptions on the time coordinate distribution, the following result. There exists a norm N(·) on Rd such that, for all 0 < ε < 1, we have that almost surely for all sufficiently large t the N-ball of radius (1 – ε)t is contained in η, (the set of all sites occupied by time t) and η, is contained in the N-ball of radius (1 + ε)t. Richardson (1973) derived the corresponding ‘in probability' result for a class of spread processes on Rd, satisfying certain conditions.
