This paper provides the first detailed documentation of aspectual properties of motion verbs in Blackfoot (an Algonquian language) from the Kainaa dialect. In particular, the focus of the paper is to detail how a sentient subject in this language is associated with an inherent endpoint of motion events (i.e., delimitedness). I show that in Blackfoot, an event can have a delimited construal when a sentient subject is an agent (but not a theme). A language-specific requirement for event delimitedness is thus the presence of an external argument that is sentient, which I formalize as a feature [m(ental state)] on a DP, as in Ritter (2015). A major contribution of the current study is thus to show that event delimitedness can be constrained by formal features of the external argument, whereas previously only the internal argument was thought to be involved in event delimitedness.

Michel-Paul Guy de Chabanon (1730–1792), an aesthetician and partisan of Jean-Philippe Rameau's harmonic theories, is most often remembered for his rejection of musical mimesis and for his separation of music and language. In doing so, he advanced one of the first – if not the first – aesthetic theories of musical autonomy. Yet despite this achievement, little has been written about how or why he came to this conclusion. This article provides a long-overdue reconstruction of Chabanon's claims for autonomy while simultaneously resituating him in eighteenth-century musical discourse. Through a sylleptic reading of his writings and the intertexts that underpin them, I show that Chabanon was an insightful critic of the French Enlightenment's aesthetic project. I accomplish this by reconstructing his argument about music's ability to provoke aesthetic experiences within listeners. As I contend, Chabanon's own encounter with this question articulates an aesthetic theory based upon music's materiality, grounded at once through the science of acoustics, novel theories of sensory experience and the musical theories that they engendered. Using his documented experience of Rameau's Pigmalion (1748) as a point of departure, I argue that Chabanon's transformation of musical aesthetics into an autonomous discipline helps to turn the early-modern subject into the modern listening self.

We validated seven chronic disease ascertainment algorithms for use in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. The algorithms pertained to diabetes mellitus type 2, parkinsonism, chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), hand osteoarthritis (OA), hip OA, knee OA, and ischemic heart disease. Our target recruitment was 20 cases and controls per disease; some cases were controls for unrelated diseases. Participants completed interviewer-administered disease symptom and medication use questionnaires. Diabetes cases and controls underwent fasting glucose testing; CAO cases and controls underwent spirometry testing. For each disease, the appropriate algorithm was used to classify participants’ disease status (positive or negative for disease). We also calculated sensitivity and specificity using physician diagnosis as the reference standard. The final sample involved 176 participants recruited in three Canadian cities between 2009 and 2011. Most estimated sensitivities and specificities were 80 per cent or more, indicating that the seven algorithms correctly identified individuals with the target disease.

The aim of this study was to develop a case-finding tool enabling the identification of residential care facilities that provide inadequate care to impaired older persons and assess its validity. This was done using data from a recent study that involved 88 homes for the aged located in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. For that study, facility managers were interviewed for information about themselves and their residence, while quality of care was assessed with the QUALCAEE Scale for each of 301 residents of the selected homes. Multivariate regression analyses helped develop a short questionnaire that can be completed during a telephone interview with the facility manager. With 85 per cent sensitivity and 65 per cent specificity in identifying homes delivering inadequate care, this case-finding questionnaire is simple, inexpensive and shows good evidence of validity.

—Midgut trypsin and lectin levels were determined in three tsetse species, namely Glossina morsitans morsitans, G. longipennis and G. fuscipes fuscipes. In addition, the abilities of midgut homogenates prepared from these flies to transform bloodstream-form Trypanosoma brucei brucei and T. congolense were compared in vitro. In all the species examined, trypsin levels did not differ significantly up to 24 h post-bloodmeal. There were similar rates of transformation of the bloodstream-form trypanosomes into procyclic (midgut) forms in vivo, so that all species had similar levels of infection in the midgut. However, trypsin levels continued to increase beyond 24 h, reaching a peak between 48 and 72 h. The peak was lowest in G. m. morsitans. The midgut homogenates in this species also had the lowest levels of lectin. The species had the highest levels of mature T. congolense and T. brucei infections. We propose that the lower levels of peak midgut tryspin and lectin in G. m. morsitans is important in the establishment of trypanosome infections in this species of tsetse.

Screen house studies on the incidence and yield losses in three cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) varieties, TV × 3236, Ife Brown and Ife Bimpe due to the leaf beetle Ootheca mutabilis Sahl were carried out. Artificial infestation was done at two growth stages of cowpea: the 5-leaf stage (2 weeks after emergence) and 4 weeks after emergence. Variety TV×3236 was found to be the least susceptible, while var. Ife Bimpe was the most susceptible to leaf beetle damage. Young plants were more susceptible than older ones.

Flowering was delayed in plants infested with beetles and the extent of defoliation had a pronounced effect on the yield of cowpea.

The percentage grain yield loss ranged from 19.48% to 59.77% depending on level of beetle infestation, variety and age of the plant at infestation.

Various wood species used for granary or crib construction were tested for their susceptibility to Prostephanus truncatus (Horn), a new stored grain pest in Benin found in 1984. Ten of the widely used wood species were chosen after survey in infested zones. Wood samples were dried in the oven (60°, 72 hr). They were reduced to 20 cm length, with diameter 2.0–2.6 cm and moisture content varying from 11.1–12.7%, respectively. Wood densities ranged from 0.455–0.999 g/cm−3. Fifty adult insects (<7 days old) were released into the middle of a sample made up of the 10 wood species for free-choice assays and 20 insects per wood species in no-choice tests. Four replicates were set up for each category. After 45 days of exposure at a temperature of 20–35°C and 60–90% r.h., data related to number of Insects that had penetrated each wood, number of larvae, and length of tunnelling were assessed. From the overall data analysis, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. and Holarrhena floribunda (G. Don) appeared least susceptible. Tectona grandis L., Fagara xanthoxyloides Lam., Azadirachta indica A. Juss and Mallotus oppositifolius (Geisel). Mull. Arg. were the more susceptible wood species.

Fish stock assessment makes Widespread use of Virtual Population Analysis (VPA) and long-term equilibrium prediction models. Although there have been some statistical investigations about the properties of VPA results, apparently there are no complete analyse about predictions statistical and numerical behaviour. However, management decisions generally rely upon production forecasts. This paper compares stability properties of VPA and the yield per recruit model with regard to various errors concerning all the input parameters. Robustness fis assessed by means of first-ordo sensitivities whereas variances are inferred from delta-method estimators. Sensitivity of yield per recruit appears to be mainly due to terminal mortality rate and age-specific weights, and to a lesser extent, to catches and natural mortality. Mean values of the input parameters were also found to influence the model's behaviour. A complete estimation of variances would require a variance-covariance matrix for weights at age and terminal fishing mortality rates. Sensitivities and variances are complementary in that the first quantify the absolute robustness of the models whereas the second show model robustness in relation to the dimensioned interval of variation of each input parameter. If variances were available for all parameters, yield per recruit estimates could be taken into account for fisheries management decisions.

Combining ability analysis for three stem borer resistance parameters, i.e. “dead hearts”, leaf injury and stem tunnelling, revealed that both additive and non-additive types of gene effects were involved in the inheritance of these attributes. The specific combining ability (sca)/general combining ability (gca) variance ratios further indicated predominance of additive gene effects for stem tunnelling and non-additive effects for “dead hearts” and leaf injury. The genotypes, IS 2123 and IS 5469 are good general combiners for all the three parameters. Among F1 hybrids, IS 1054 × IS 5469 and IS 18551 × IS 2123 expressed good sca for all the parameters of stem borer resistance. The use of IS 2123 and IS 5469 parental genotypes in the future breeding programmes is suggested.

Relative susceptibility of laboratory-established cultures of four populations of Dysdercus fasciatus Sign. and one population each of D. nigrofasciatus Stal., D. cardinalis Gerst, and D. superstitiosus (F.) to topical applications of cypermethrin, fenvalerate and permethrin was investigated at Kibos, Kenya. The LD50 values of the three chemicals to populations of D. fasciatus were 0.0656–0.0757, 0.335–0.469, 0.442–0.505 μg/insect, respectively, while those for D. nigrofasciatus were 0.1690–0.2541, 0.481–0.504, 0.721–0.851 μg/insect. The LD50 values for D. cardinalis and D. superstitiosus were 0.1507, 0.714, 0.798 μg/insect and 0.0991 and 0.824 μg/insect of each of the three chemicals respectively. Based on D. fasciatus from Kibos as the reference strain, the relative susceptibility values of all populations of Dysdercus species studied were small ( < four-fold) indicating that resistance was not apparent in the cotton stainers. Of the three insecticides tested, cypermethrin was the most effective judging from the high toxicity ratios between it, fenvalerate and permethrin.
