Ancho (width) chile peppers have economic, social, culinary and cultural importance in Mexico and worldwide. This chile type considers divergent subtypes that altogether have not been analysed and therefore their morphological diversity has not been systematically described. The objectives were to describe the morphological diversity of ancho pepper landraces from Mexico, to identify groups of similarity and to define the traits with the higher contribution to the total variation. Eighty-six landraces of ancho chile peppers (red, ‘mulatos’, ‘miahuatecos’, ‘cristalinos’ and ‘huacle’), collected in six states of Mexico, and two commercial controls were evaluated in two localities, in a simple randomized complete block experimental design. We recorded 76 morphological traits. Statistical analysis included a combined ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, discriminant analysis, principal components and clusters. The morphological diversity in ancho chile peppers was mainly made up of fruit width, fruit wall thickness, stem diameter, corolla length, seed weight per fruit, plant height, stem length and pubescence. We defined four groups, which made it possible to differentiate ancho chile peppers of Puebla and the huacle chile pepper of Oaxaca from populations collected in the north and ‘Bajío’ (midland) parts of Mexico. Ancho chile peppers of Mexico showed wide morphological differences according to the type of chile pepper and seed collection regions. The traits that contributed the greatest morphological diversity were fruit width, fruit wall thickness, stem diameter, corolla length, seed weight per fruit, plant height, stem length and pubescence.

We reconstruct the provenance of aluminosilicate sediment deposited in Ulleung Basin, Japan Sea, over the last 12 Ma at Site U1430 drilled during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 346. Using multivariate partitioning techniques (Q-mode factor analysis, multiple linear regressions) applied to the major, trace and rare earth element composition of the bulk sediment, we identify and quantify four aluminosilicate components (Taklimakan, Gobi, Chinese Loess and Korean Peninsula), and model their mass accumulation rates. Each of these end-members, or materials from these regions, were present in the top-performing models in all tests. Material from the Taklimakan Desert (50–60 % of aluminosilicate contribution) is the most abundant end-member through time, while Chinese Loess and Gobi Desert components increase in contribution and flux in the Plio-Pleistocene. A Korean Peninsula component is lowest in abundance when present, and its occurrence reflects the opening of the Tsushima Strait at c. 3 Ma. Variation in dust source regions appears to track step-wise Asian aridification influenced by Cenozoic global cooling and periods of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. During early stages of the evolution of the East Asian Monsoon, the Taklimakan Desert was the major source of dust to the Pacific. Continued uplift of the Tibetan Plateau may have influenced the increase in aeolian supply from the Gobi Desert and Chinese Loess Plateau into the Pleistocene. Consistent with existing records from the Pacific Ocean, these observations of aeolian fluxes provide more detail and specificity regarding the evolution of different Asian source regions through the latest Cenozoic.

The field of provenance analysis has seen a revival in the last decade as quantitative data-acquisition techniques continue to develop. In the 20th century, many heavy-mineral data were collected. These data were mostly used as qualitative indications for stratigraphy and provenance, and not incorporated in a quantitative provenance methodology. Even today, such data are mostly only used in classic data tables or cumulative heavy-mineral plots as a qualitative indication of variation. The main obstacle to rigorous statistical analysis is the compositional nature of these data which makes them unfit for standard multivariate statistics. To gain more information from legacy data, a straightforward workflow for quantitative analysis of compositional datasets is provided. First (1) a centred log-ratio transformation of the data is carried out to fix the constant-sum constraint and non-negativity of the compositional data. Next, (2) cluster analysis is followed by (3) principal component analysis and (4) bivariate log-ratio plots. Several (5) proxies for the effects of sorting and weathering are included to check the provenance significance of observed variations and finally a (6) spatial interpolation of a provenance proxy extracted from the dataset can be carried out. To test this methodology, available heavy-mineral data from the southern edge of the Miocene North Sea Basin are analysed. The results are compared with available information from literature and are used to gain improved insight into Miocene sediment input variations in the study area.

The aim of this work was to determine the distribution of trace metals in the coastal sediments from the area between Silifke and Alanya (Turkey) and to investigate the sources of these elements, based on their mineralogical, petrographical and geochemical characteristics. Forty three samples were analysed for the determination of their water content, grain-size distribution, petrographical features and their chemical and mineralogical compositions. The samples had low water content, in agreement with the large sand grain size.

The mineralogical composition reflects the complex geological setting of the area. The most abundant mineral phases are represented by calcite and dolomite, followed by quartz and mica. Chlorite, feldspar and other carbonates are present in lesser amounts, while kaolinite was detected in one sample only. All samples contain hematite, chromite, magnetite and goethite and one sample contained pyrite. Samples with high concentrations of trace metals, contained fragments of metamorphic rocks with pyroxene, amphibole, quartz and feldspar, whereas carbonates and opaque minerals were subordinate. Compared to literature data, the average concentrations of several elements and trace metals were great enough to be considered as possibly toxic, exceeding the Turkish higher acceptable limits. Geochemical data were treated statistically using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to obtain evidence of their distribution and to identify any correlations.

Based on the distribution of mineral phases, the area investigated was divided into different provinces, each characterized by the abundance of one, or more, tracer minerals. In the westernmost areas, between Alanya and Demirtas, the sediments indicate a provenance from dolomites or marbles. In the area between Demirtas and Gazipasa the provenance was from quartzites, clastic and metamorphic rocks and in the sector between Guney and Anamur, the sediments were derived mostly from low-grade metamorphic rocks, in particular metaschists and metabasites. The sediments in the area between Anamur and Ovacik, display variable source rocks and those between Ovacik and Silifke, were derived from limestones and, subordinately, clastic rocks.

The trace-metal concentrations in beach sands appear to be related to the abundance of silicate minerals derived from weathering of the metamorphic-rock outcrops in the inland mountainous regions. In contrast, the trace-metal contents of the limestone- and dolomite-bearing beach sands were small.

In this study, we investigated the potential of airborne imaging spectroscopy for in-season grassland yield estimation. We utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle and a hyperspectral imager to measure radiation, ranging from 455 to 780 nm. Initially, we assessed the spectral signature of five typical grassland species by principal component analysis, and identified a distinct reflectance difference, especially between the erectophil grasses and the planophil clover leaves. Then, we analyzed the reflectance of a typical Norwegian sward composition at different harvest dates. In order to estimate yields (dry matter, DM), several powered partial least squares (PPLS) regression and linear regression (LR) models were fitted to the reflectance data and prediction performance of these models were compared with that of simple LR models, based on selected vegetation indices and plant height. We achieved the highest prediction accuracies by means of PPLS, with relative errors of prediction from 9.1 to 11.8% (329 to 487 kg DM ha−1) for the individual harvest dates and 14.3% (558 kg DM ha−1) for a generalized model.

During the summer Lake Anónima experiences important changes in salinity and lake level fluctuations. Physicochemical data and field observations indicate that evaporative processes are dominant and that the water inflow is mainly provided by snow meltwater and streams. A multiproxy analysis of data from lake bottom sediments suggests that the main surface stream located south-west of the lake controls the clastic input and the spatial variation of sediment composition. Through an integrated analysis (magnetic, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies) magnetite and greigite minerals were identified in these lake sediments. Such ferrimagnetic minerals have ultra-fine grain sizes (<0.1 μm). Magnetic parameters and non-magnetic variables analysed by multivariate statistics reveal significant differences between silt facies (e.g. mass-specific susceptibility χ=109.6×10-8 m3 kg-1, remanent coercivity Hcr=49.2 mT and total organic carbon (TOC)=1.11%) and sand facies (e.g. χ=82.1×10-8 m3 kg-1, Hcr=44.7 mT and TOC=0.70%), and four recent depositional sub-environments were identified and characterized in Lake Anónima. This multiparameter analysis contributes to the understanding of present-day lacustrine dynamic and sedimentary processes. Lake Anónima may provide a useful analogue for the interpretation of other lacustrine basins in the Antarctic region.

Shade plots, simple visual representations of abundance matrices from multivariate species assemblage studies, are shown to be an effective aid in choosing an overall transformation (or other pre-treatment) of quantitative data for long-term use, striking an appropriate balance between dominant and less abundant taxa in ensuing resemblance-based multivariate analyses. Though the exposition is entirely general and applicable to all community studies, detailed illustrations of the comparative power and interpretative possibilities of shade plots are given in the case of two estuarine assemblage studies in south-western Australia: (a) macrobenthos in the upper Swan Estuary over a two-year period covering a highly significant precipitation event for the Perth area; and (b) a wide-scale spatial study of the nearshore fish fauna from five divergent estuaries. The utility of transformations of intermediate severity is again demonstrated and, with greater novelty, the potential importance seen of further mild transformation of all data after differential down-weighting (dispersion weighting) of spatially ‘clumped’ or ‘schooled’ species. Among the new techniques utilized is a two-way form of the RELATE test, which demonstrates linking of assemblage structure (fish) to continuous environmental variables (water quality), having removed a categorical factor (estuary differences). Re-orderings of sample and species axes in the associated shade plots are seen to provide transparent explanations at the species level for such continuous multivariate patterns.

Knowing neuronal types is essential for understanding the structural and functional organization of the nervous system. It has long been recognized that neuronal types should be discovered and not defined. This can be done using cluster analysis (CA). Despite there being many studies using CA to classify neurons, only a few of them meet its formal prerequisites. In the present study, we provide an example of using CA in combination with other multivariate techniques for examining neuronal diversity. A special emphasis is put on formal prerequisites to the data and procedure. The data under scrutiny are a sample of ganglion cells projecting to the basal optic nucleus [accessory optic system-projecting ganglion cells (AOS GCs)] in the common frog. There is physiological evidence that these cells comprise at least two functional types but their structural heterogeneity has not been addressed. Cells were labeled with horseradish peroxidase in vivo and examined in whole-mounted retinae using light microscopy. A sample of well-stained cells was obtained and used to estimate 18 structural parameters. A variety of clustering algorithms were used to classify the cells. The joint polar distribution of dendrite mass was monomodal. CA did not reveal a statistically reliable cluster structure in the sample. The clusters were not cohesive and well isolated. ANOVA-on-Ranks revealed no significant between-cluster differences. Our formal conclusion is that functionally distinct frog AOS GCs do not differ in morphology or dendritic arbor orientation. The advantages and limitations of the adopted approach are discussed.

In this article, we use simulated and experimental data to explore how three operator-controllable parameters—(1) signal level, (2) detector resolution, and (3) number of factors chosen for analysis—affect quantitative analyses of scanning transmission electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectrum images processed by principal component analysis (PCA). We find that improvements in both signal level and detector resolution improve the precision of quantitative analyses, but that signal level is the most important. We also find that if the rank of the PCA solution is not chosen properly, it may be possible to improperly fit the underlying data and degrade the accuracy of results. Additionally, precision is degraded in the case when too many factors are included in the model.

When assessing oyster-reef habitat in estuaries it is important to understand the influence of salinity on the spatial and temporal variability of associated organisms. How comparable is community structure among stations located at different points along the salinity gradients of estuaries or among tidal tributaries that experience different levels of freshwater inflow? Do assemblages vary seasonally in response to changing salinity and freshwater inflow? To address these questions, multivariate techniques were employed to analyze decapod crustacean and fish abundance data. Organisms were collected at three reefs along the salinity gradient of three estuaries: the Caloosahatchee River and estuary, Estero River and Bay, and Faka Union Canal and Bay. Additional collections were made from reefs located near the mouths of Estero Bay's five tidal tributaries. Samples were dominated by the decapods Eurypanopeus depressus and Petrolisthes armatus. Commonly occurring species included the decapods Panopeus obesus, Alpheus heterochaelis and Rhithropanopeus harrisii and the fishes Gobiosoma robustum, Lophogobius cyprinoides and Gobiesox strumosus. Analysis of similarities suggested differences among stations located along the salinity gradients of all three estuaries. Community structure also varied among stations located near the mouths of the tidal tributaries of Estero Bay. Multidimensional scaling identified community structure present at upper stations as distinct from that downstream and at high-flow tributaries as distinct from that near low-flow tributaries. Upper stations and stations near high-flow tributaries were typified by E. depressus and gobiid fishes. Downstream stations and stations near low-flow tributaries were typified by E. depressus and P. armatus. Percent dissimilarity was greatest when upper and lower stations were compared along the salinity gradient or when low salinity and high-salinity sites were compared among tributaries. Within-station sample variability tended to be higher upstream or in association with high-flow tributaries.

This study describes the current status of the small fish community in Niushan Lake in China, and examines the spatial and seasonal variations of the community in relation to key environmental factors. Based on macrophyte cover conditions, the lake was divided into three major habitat types: (1) Potamogeton maackianus habitat, (2) Potamogeton maackianus and Myriophyllum spicatum habitat, and (3) uncovered or less-covered habitat. Fish were sampled quantitatively in the three habitat types by block nets seasonally from September 2002 to August 2003. A total of 10 469 individuals from 27 fish species were caught, among which 20 species were considered as small fishes. Rhodeus ocellatus, Paracheilognathus imberbis, Pseudorasbora parva, Micropercops swinhonis and Cultrichthys erythropterus were recognized as dominant small fishes according to their abundance and occurrence. It was noted that (1) small fishes predominated the total number of fish species in the lake, which reflected to some degree the size diminution phenomenon of fish resources; (2) many small fishes had plant detritus as their food item, which was consistent with the abundance of macrophyte detritus in the lake and implied the importance of detritus in supporting small fish secondary production. Canonical correspondence analysis suggested that the spatial distributions of most small fishes were associated with complex macrophyte cover conditions. Macrophyte biomass was positively correlated with species richness, diversity index and the catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of the fish community. Water depth had no significant effects on species diversity and distribution of the small fishes. Correspondence analysis revealed a higher occurrence of the small fishes and higher abundance of individuals in summer and autumn. Seasonal length-frequency distributions of several species indicated that more larval and juvenile individuals appeared in spring and summer. This study provides some baseline information which will be essential to long-term monitoring of small fish communities in the Yangtze lakes.

Traditional categories of locomotor habit in mammals are largely based on variables that are continuous in nature, making intermediate forms difficult to evaluate quantitatively. Interpretations of these categories have varied greatly among authors, mainly owing to the inconsistent meanings ascribed to these essentially morphological variables. As a result, it is not clear whether these categories reflect any true locomotor influence, or if they can be applied in any form to non-mammalian taxa. In order to rectify these two difficulties, locomotor categories are rejected here in favour of a multivariate continuum. By basing this continuum on morphological variables that fulfil predictions of limb design under biomechanical theory, it can be tied to limb mechanics and applied to both extant and extinct animals alike. A series of such measurements were taken from a large sample of mammal and dinosaur hindlimb bones, and subjected to statistical testing. Patterns of variation in dinosaurs are similar to those seen in mammals, ranging between extremes traditionally designated as ‘cursorial’ and ‘graviportal’. An evaluation of dinosaur locomotor evolution in light of this continuum suggests that dinosaurs originated as small cursors, but that most lineages acquired a more mid-grade locomotor habit. Large taxa (sauropods, armoured ornithischians) were essentially graviportal, while smaller forms tended towards cursoriality; only coelurosaur theropods developed cursoriality at large body sizes. The discrepancy between large, graviportal herbivores and large, mid-grade to cursorial carnivores in Mesozoic communities argues against pursuit predation as a major influence in dinosaur locomotor evolution.

We examine the problem of building quantitative elemental maps from X-ray absorption images (radiography). As we suggested in a previous publication in Microbeam Analysis, factorial analysis of correspondence is shown to be an optimal method, in the least squares sense, for solving the multilinear equation system given by Beer's law: it relates to an efficient description of the problem in the concentration phase space. We explain how factorial analysis is related to singular value decomposition and we give a complete description of the algorithm. The method can be applied to any multilinear analytical technique as well. Programs are written in C and Mathematica® languages. Academic users may obtain the relevant software (source and code) as freeware directly from the authors.

Les auteurs ont fait passer un questionnaire de personnalité (l'IP9/D) à 187 sujets, 30 d’entre eux y présentaient une tendance pathologique dans au moins une des dix échelles. Mélangés à 30 autres sujets sains, ils ont alors été revus en entretien individuel afin d'y mettre en évidence d’éventuels diagnostics de troubles de la personnalité (personnalités pathologiques) selon les critères du DSM III. Seuls les sujets pathologiques selon l'IP9/D reçurent un diagnostic de personnalité pathologique d’après le DSM III. Une analyse factorielle des correspondances multiples éclairée d’une classification ascendante hiérarchique a confirmé statistiquement et d’une manière générale que ce qui est mesuré par l'un, l'est aussi par l'autre. Ainsi les sujets étiquetés «personnalité atypique, mixte ou autre» (301.89) correspondaient à ceux qui présentaient une tendance pathologique en «Anxiété et/ou Dépression» (IP9/D). L’IP9/D explore la tendance à la «schizoïdie” qui est très proche, en fait, de la personnalité schizotypique du DSM III. Les personnalités histrionique et borderline du DSM III sont très proches des tendances psychopathiques de l’IP9/D ; de même la tendance à l’hystéroïdie de l’IP9/D s’agrège rapidement avec la personnalité antisociale du DSM III, ce qui confirme un certain nombre de constatations cliniques. Si, en dépit d’une certaine dispersion, la même observation peut être faite en ce qui concerne l’échelle obsessionnelle de l’IP9/D et la personnalité compulsive du DSM III, certains liens paraissent moins évidents compte tenu du fait que la population étudiée est quantitativement faible. Cependant, il y a concordance entre les deux techniques : la passation d’un questionnaire de personnalité et les entretiens cliniques. Toutefois, il faut se garder de conclure hâtivement et abusivement qu’un questionnaire peut remplacer un entretien clinique.
