The potential reduction in surface runoff loss of band-applied herbicides was studied in a rainfall simulation. Concentration and loss of atrazine, metribuzin, and metolachlor applied in a band 25, 50, or 75 cm wide on 1-m2 plots graded to < 0.5% slope were compared with that from a broadcast preemergence application. Herbicide concentration in runoff decreased with time after initiation of runoff and as application band width decreased. Band width reduced herbicide concentration in runoff to a greater extent than time after initiation of runoff. The 50-cm band treatment reduced atrazine and metribuzin loss 69 and 71%, respectively, from the broadcast treatment. Forty-nine percent less metolachlor was lost from the 50-cm band than from the broadcast treatment. Herbicide concentration or loss in surface runoff did not differ between the 50- and 25-cm band width treatments. Herbicide lost in runoff ranged from 4 to 7% of application with the smaller loss associated with narrower band widths. The greater reduction in atrazine and metribuzin loss in surface runoff than that associated with the reduction in input alone may be attributed to leaching or adsorption of herbicide by soil in the nonsprayed strip as runoff flowed from the treated to the nontreated areas. Band application of herbicides may provide an effective, consistent means to reduce herbicide loss in surface runoff.

Thylakoid membranes isolated from chloroplasts of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine]-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) biotypes of common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.) were assayed to determine the effect of diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], bromacil (5-bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil) and several s-triazine herbicides on photosystem II (PSII) activity. Each herbicide inhibited photosynthetic electron transport on the reducing side of PSII in thylakoid membranes from the susceptible biotype. Thylakoids isolated from the resistant biotype were 60 to 3200 times more tolerant to the inhibitors than thylakoids from the susceptible biotype. Electrophoretic analysis revealed no differences in molecular weight of membrane polypeptides of either common groundsel biotype. Three-hour dark incubation did not enhance inhibitor activity in the resistant-type thylakoid membranes. Specific structural or configurational changes associated with the reactive site may account for the differences in Hill reaction inhibition between biotypes. A relationship between herbicide structure and Hill reaction activity is discussed.

The effect of atrazine rate and subsequent tillage on seedling alfalfa injury from atrazine carry-over was examined at two locations in Michigan. Atrazine concentration and alfalfa injury 1 yr after treatment were greater in the northern location than in the central Michigan location. At both locations, alfalfa injury was significantly greater under no-tillage than moldboard plowing. With no-tillage, alfalfa was injured more in the area between the previous corn rows than within the rows. Analysis of soil samples collected from within corn rows and between rows showed higher atrazine concentration between the corn rows.

Atrazine is the most widely used herbicide in the U.S. and has been detected in surface water and groundwater. Technologies are needed for onsite and in situ remediation of water and soil containing atrazine. We investigated the potential of using fine-grained, zero-valent iron (Fe0) to remove atrazine and promote its degradation in contaminated water and soil. Atrazine loss from aqueous solution increased with increasing Fe0 concentration (w/v). Agitating 20 μg 14C-ring-labeled atrazine L−1 with 10% Fe0 (w/v) removed 92% of the 14C from solution within 48 h. Only about 4% of the 14C lost from solution was extractable from the iron with 3 mM CaCl2 (readily available pool), 81% was extractable with CH3CN (potentially available pool), and 11% was unextractable residues. A companion experiment indicated that most of the 14C extracted from the iron with 3 mM CaCl2 after the 48-h Fe0 treatment was unaltered atrazine, while the CH3CN extract contained approximately 33% atrazine and 48% was unidentified atrazine transformation products. Treating a highly contaminated solution (20 mg atrazine L−1) with 20% Fe0 (w/v) removed 88% of the 14C (added as 14C-ring-labeled atrazine) from solution within 48 h. Deethylatrazine was the main atrazine transformation product detected in solution after treatment, but small amounts of deisopropylatrazine, didealkylatrazine, and hydroxyatrazine were also found. Treating Sharpsburg surface soil containing 1 mg atrazine kg−1 with Fe0 (2%, w/w) increased atrazine mineralization from 4.1 to 11.2% after 120 d. Pyrite (4% FeS2, w/w) also increased atrazine mineralization in surface soil, but was less effective in the presence of NO3 − or SO4 2− (100 mg kg−1 soil). Adding 2% Fe0 (w/w) and 100 mg NO3 − kg−1 to contaminated subsurface soil increased atrazine mineralization from 0.4 to 8.2% within 120 d, and unextractable residues increased from 4.6 to 9.8%. These results indicate iron can sorb atrazine and promote its transformation in water and soil.

At least 57 weed species, including both dicots and monocots, have been reported to have biotypes selected for resistance to the triazine herbicides. In addition, at least 47 species have been reported to have biotypes resistant to one or more of 14 other herbicides or herbicide families. These herbicides include the aryloxyphenoxypropionics, bipyridiliums, dinitroanilines, phenoxys, substituted areas, and sulfonylureas, with two or more resistant biotypes each, as well as several other herbicides in which resistance is less well documented. Although evolved resistance presents a serious problem for chemical weed control, it has also offered new potential for transferring herbicide resistance to crop species. Mechanisms of resistance that are due to single or a few genes have become the focus of biotechnology, as the probability of their successful transfer to crop species is high.

Field studies were conducted to determine the effect of soil surface (upper 5 cm) pH and tillage on weed control and corn (Zea mays L.) yield using simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis-(ethylamino)-s-triazine] as the herbicide for weed control. Soil pH, weed control, and corn yield were examined under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems with and without added lime and different rates of nitrogen. Increased soil pH significantly increased weed control as compared with added lime vs. no added lime, where the surface soil pH influenced the effectiveness of the applied simazine. Soil pH had a greater effect on weed control under no-tillage than under conventional tillage. Conventional tillage significantly (P<.01) increased weed control, yield, and soil pH over no-tillage. Additions of lime as compared to unlimed treatments resulted in significantly increased weed control (83% vs. 63%), yield (5,930 vs. 5,290 kg/ha) and soil pH (5.91 vs. 5.22). The poorest weed control was observed with no-tillage on unlimed plots. A significant tillage by linear effect of nitrogen interaction for all variables resulted from a greater decrease (P<.01) in weed control and soil pH and a greater increase in yield with increased nitrogen under no-tillage than with conventional tillage.

The hydrolytic and dealkylation products of cyanazine have been detected in soils, but the sorption of these products in soil has not been well studied. We examined sorption characteristics of five cyanazine degradation products in relation to cyanazine in Norfolk loamy sand, Tunica silty clay, and Dundee silt loam soils. Sorption was determined using a batch equilibrium method. Air-dried soil (3 g) was shaken in 6 ml of solution containing cyanazine or one of its degradation products for 48 h at 4 C. Five concentrations (2.04 to 54.67 μmol L−1) of each chemical were evaluated. The cyanazine Freundlich coefficient (Kf) ranged from 0.64 in Norfolk soil to 4.75 in Dundee no-tillage (NT) soil, and was higher in Dundee NT than in Dundee conventional-tillage (CT) soil. The Freundlich exponent (N) values for cyanazine were less than 0.85 in all soils, indicating nonlinearity of the sorption isotherm. In general, cyanazine sorption among the soils increased in the order of Norfolk << Dundee CT < Tunica < Dundee NT. Cyanazine sorption among the soils was correlated with fine texture and higher organic carbon content. Sorption of cyanazine degradation products was less than cyanazine sorption in all soils. Isotherms were nonlinear, with sorption decreasing in the order of cyanazine > desmethylpropanenitrile cyanazine > hydroxyacid cyanazine > desethyl cyanazine > cyanazine amide >> chloroacid cyanazine. The Kf for chloroacid cyanazine ranged from 0.21 in Norfolk soil to 0.42 in Dundee NT soil. Sorption patterns of five degradation products among the soils were generally similar to that of cyanazine. Our data indicate that under field conditions, cyanazine degradation products (especially cyanazine amide and chloroacid cyanazine) are more likely to remain in the aqueous phase and thus have a greater potential to move with water compared to cyanazine.

Root absorption of 14C-5 (ring)-metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] from hydroponic culture and its subsequent translocation in tolerant (‘Russet Burbank’) and susceptible (‘Chipbelle’) potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars were measured. Differences in root absorption did not appear to be as important to differential tolerance as did translocation differences. Total available metribuzin absorbed was 6 and 7%, 18 and 29%, and 31 and 45% after 1, 4, and 8 days for Russet Burbank and Chipbelle, respectively. Radioactivity was concentrated in stems, petioles, and leaf veins in the tolerant cultivar, whereas interveinal leaf tissue was the major accumulation site for 14C in the susceptible cultivar. Of the total radioactivity in the plants after 8 days, 82 and 87% were in the foliage for the tolerant and the susceptible cultivar, respectively. Translocation was apoplastic. Metribuzin tolerance by Russet Burbank is due in part to restricted translocation to the leaf blades. A model for differential transport between cultivars is proposed.

Field studies and laboratory analyses were conducted to examine factors affecting degradation of 14C-atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamine)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] under field conditions. The effects of these factors on weed control under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems were also examined. The amount of radioactivity which was unextractable in 90% methanol increased with time following treatment with 14C-atrazine. The rate of formation of unextractable 14C compounds was greater under no-tillage and increased with decreasing pH. After 14 to 18 days, a greater amount of extractable atrazine was present in areas receiving lime. The degradation of atrazine occurred more rapidly when surface pH was less than 5.0 compared with a pH greater than 6.5. The effect of lime on the amount of parent atrazine present in the soil was directly correlated to its effect on soil pH. Extractable atrazine in the soil 45 days after treatment was significantly correlated with weed control with the greatest effect under no-tillage.

Field experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the tolerance of ‘Penncross' creeping bentgrass and ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass fall-overseeded with perennial ryegrass to irrigation water containing simazine. Creeping bentgrass was more sensitive to simazine than the bermudagrass/ryegrass mixture. The predicted critical simazine concentration necessary to reduce creeping bentgrass quality ≤ 60% was 0.22 mg L–1 which corresponded to a cumulative simazine rate of 98 g ha–1. For bermudagrass/ryegrass, the predicted critical simazine concentration and cumulative simazine rate that reduced quality ≤ 60% was 0.68 mg L–1 and 306 g ha–1, respectively.

This study documents the first case of triazine resistance in wild radish and the resistance mechanism involved. The high survival (57 to 97%) of the resistant (R) biotype progeny plants treated at a rate four times higher than the commonly recommended rate of simazine or atrazine clearly established that the R biotype plants were resistant to triazines. All the plants of the susceptible (S) biotype plants were killed when treated at half the commonly recommended rate of atrazine (0.5 kg/ha) or simazine (0.25 kg/ha). The dry weight of the S biotype was reduced by 89 to 96% at the commonly recommended rate of atrazine or simazine, while the dry weight of the R biotype plants was reduced by only 36 to 54% even when treated at a rate four times higher than the commonly recommended rate of atrazine or simazine. The growth-reduction–ratio values indicated that the R biotype progeny plants were 105 and 159 times more resistant to atrazine and simazine, respectively, than the S biotype plants. Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence yield was reduced by 97% in the S biotype 24 h after application of triazine compared with only 9% reduction in the R biotype, indicating that the resistance mechanism involved is target-site based. The R biotype was effectively controlled by herbicides of different modes of action.

Research was conducted in winter of 2000 and spring of 2001 to determine the extent of simazine-resistant annual bluegrass in Mississippi. Samples of annual bluegrass seed or mature plants were collected from 71 locations across the state and grown in the greenhouse. Four weeks after treatment with 22.4 kg ai/ha simazine (10× rate), samples from 31 of 71 locations (30 golf courses and one nongolf course) evaluated in the greenhouse had simazine-resistant annual bluegrass plants. Thus, 43% of the golf courses tested in the greenhouse had triazine-resistant annual bluegrass present. When natural field populations were treated with an equivalent simazine rate, simazine-resistant annual bluegrass plants were observed in 90% of the sites found to be resistant in the greenhouse screen.

Reduced-rate zone herbicide application (ZHA) consists of banding reduced herbicide rates between crop rows (≤ full broadcast registered rate, 1×) and banding much reduced herbicide rates over crop rows (≪ 1×). The objective of this research was to compare the mechanically complicated dual-boom ZHA sprayer with a much simpler, single-boom ZHA sprayer for controlling giant foxtail and common waterhemp in field corn in 2003 and 2004 in Missouri. The dual-boom ZHA sprayer employed two different herbicide solutions, which were propelled through two booms on separate sprayer systems to apply different herbicide rates over in-row and between-row areas while maintaining similar carrier volumes and coverage through two booms. In contrast, the single-boom ZHA sprayer is a mechanically simpler system in which both herbicide rates and carrier volumes were varied across one boom over in-row (IR) and between-row (BR) areas. In single-boom ZHA, two different nozzle tips were alternated on one boom over in-row and between-row areas, the number of nozzles per boom was doubled, and the distance between nozzles was halved compared with a conventional sprayer boom. In a 2-yr study, these different ZHA sprayers were used to apply preemergence atrazine + S-metolachlor between and over crop rows at various reduced rates (1× = 2,240 + 1,750 g ai/ha, respectively). Among all single- and dual-boom ZHA sprayer treatments and the weed-free checks, corn yields and in-row total weed cover were statistically indistinguishable for both years and for between-row total weed cover in 1 of 2 yr. In both years, a single-boom ZHA system prevented yield loss from competing weeds as effectively as the dual-boom ZHA system. The new single-boom ZHA system is a mechanically simple, inexpensive, generic alternative for reducing herbicide rates and lowering input costs.

Phytoremediation depends on the ability of plants to tolerate and assimilate contaminants. We have been interested in the use of common ornamental plants to ameliorate the effects of pesticide waste on golf courses and ornamental plant nurseries. This research characterized the interaction between two ornamentals, Acorus gramenius and Pontederia cordata, and the herbicide simazine. Simazine tolerance levels for the ornamentals were determined by exposing plants to 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 mg L−1 in aqueous nutrient media for 7 d. Response endpoints included fresh weight gains for both species after 7 d exposure and 7 d postexposure. Quantum efficiency of P. cordata was also measured using dark-adapted (Fv/Fm) and light-adapted (fluorescence yields) plants. Simazine uptake and distribution within each plant was determined by exposing plants to [14C]-simazine in nutrient media (0.24 mg L−1) for 1, 3, 5, or 7 d. Plant tissues were combusted and analyzed by liquid scintillation counting. Pontederia cordata fresh weight gains were reduced 76 and 70% by 1.0 and 3.0 mg L−1, respectively, after 7 d exposure. Acorus gramenius fresh weight gains were reduced 103, 124, and 144% at 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg L−1 following 7 d exposure, respectively. Photosynthetic efficiency measured on dark-adapted P. cordata (Fv/Fm) was reduced 21, 47, and 71% by 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg L−1, respectively, whereas photosynthetic efficiency measured on light-adapted plants (fluorescence yields) were reduced 9, 25, 59, 87, and 96%, respectively, by 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1, and 3 mg L−1. Simazine activity in solution was reduced 45 and 34% over 7 d with A. gramenius and P. cordata, respectively. By day 7, activity was distributed throughout the plants, but predominantly in the leaves. Uptake of simazine was correlated with water uptake throughout the 7 d. These results suggest that A. gramenius and P. cordata may be good candidates for incorporation in a phytoremediation scheme for simazine.

Doveweed is a summer annual that is difficult to control in turfgrass. Photosystem II inhibitors have the potential to control doveweed, but research is limited on the efficacy of these herbicides. The objectives of this research were to evaluate (1) the differential tolerance levels of doveweed to atrazine and simazine, (2) the influence of application placement and rate on herbicide efficacy, and (3) uptake and metabolism of these herbicides in doveweed. In greenhouse experiments, the time required to injure doveweed 50% was three to five times faster for atrazine than simazine. Simazine soil or foliar + soil application reduced doveweed biomass 77% from the nontreated, but foliar-only treatments reduced biomass 51%. Application placements for atrazine equally reduced shoot biomass 96% from the nontreated. In a dose–response experiment, atrazine and simazine required ≤ 1.8 kg ha−1 and ≥ 5.1 kg ha−1 to injure doveweed 50% from 8 to 16 d after treatment (DAT), respectively. Doveweed required 79% less atrazine to reduce biomass 50% from the nontreated compared with simazine. In laboratory experiments, doveweed had similar root absorption levels of 14C-atrazine and 14C-simazine. Metabolism of both herbicides linearly increased from 1 to 7 DAT, but parent herbicide levels averaged 39 and 25% of the extracted radioactivity from 14C-atrazine and 14C-simazine, respectively. Doveweed metabolized 14C-simazine to three major metabolites, including hydroxysimazine, that each ranged from 24 to 29% of the extracted radioactivity. Hydroxyatrazine was the only major metabolite (> 10% of total 14C extracted) of 14C-atrazine. Overall, doveweed has slower metabolism of atrazine compared with simazine and is the basis for differential tolerance levels to these herbicides.

The Interregional Research Project Number 4 (IR-4) Specialty Food Crops Program is a publicly-funded program initiated in 1963 to develop and submit regulatory data to support registration of pest control products for specialty crops. In the early to mid 1990s, nearly 45% of the IR-4 residue projects supported new herbicide registrations for fruits and vegetables with the other 55% devoted to fungicides, insecticides, and nematacides. In 2005, the number of residue projects conducted by IR-4 to support herbicide fruit and vegetable registrations was less than 30%. The three main factors that have contributed to this decline are: fewer herbicides available for registration; product liability concerns; and an increased focus on new, safer, and Reduced Risk Pesticides for insect and disease control. It has been a number of years since a new herbicide has been developed for a major crop that could be extended to specialty food crops. Many of the current IR-4 herbicide projects are with products that have been on the market for 20 or more years. Product liability is a concern because of the high value of many specialty crops relative to the potential market opportunity. In many cases, the registrant requires product performance data before IR-4 can proceed with a residue project. With limited funds for developing these data, many new projects never proceed to the regulatory stage. Although registrants can seek indemnification for some of these uses, it is a complicated often state-specific process. IR-4 has been successful in a number of areas, including the registration of a large numbers of uses through reduced data extrapolations for products such as glyphosate and carfentrazone-ethyl. Additionally, IR-4 submitted the first successful petition establishing an exemption of tolerance for a conventional herbicide (imazamox). Future IR-4 initiatives include collaboration with industry, growers, and academia to develop new herbicide technologies such as plant breeding or transgenic crops and generation of appropriate data to extend those products to specialty food crops. IR-4 will also assist in registering products that can be used on crops that have been selected (or developed through biotechnological approaches) to be tolerant to existing herbicides. Registrants should strongly consider developing herbicides for specialty food crops, with IR-4's assistance, as a means to expand markets and also as a means to extend data protection of their products, as allowed under the Food Quality Protection Act.

Triazine-resistant common lambsquarters (TR-CHEAL) is a widespread weed problem in the northcentral United States. Field studies were conducted from 1995 to 1997 to determine the efficacy and consistency of metolachlor, pendimethalin, and acetochlor applied preemergence (PRE) for control of TR-CHEAL in corn. Pendimethalin provided greater (98%) and more consistent control of TR-CHEAL than metolachlor (66%) or acetochlor (86%). Studies were conducted from 1998 to 2000 to examine the potential of isoxaflutole, flumetsulam, and rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron for control of TR-CHEAL in corn. In 1999 and 2000, isoxaflutole (35 g ai/ha), flumetsulam (35 g ai/ ha), and rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron (26 g ai/ha) provided 98% or greater control of TR-CHEAL. In 1998 when rainfall was limited after application, isoxaflutole (70 g ai/ha) and flumetsulam (70 g ai/ha) provided 65 and 55% control, respectively, and rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron (26 g ai/ha) provided 55% control. Results indicate that control of TR-CHEAL with currently labeled PRE herbicides is possible.

For a number of generations, we followed the frequency, performance and fecundity of an initial mixture (50[ratio ]50) of triazine resistant (R) and susceptible (S) but otherwise near-isogenic lines of Brassica rapa (for 3 yr) and of Chenopodium album (for 2 yr) in neighbouring experimental garden plots, which differed in aspect (north-facing versus south-facing), shading, and transparent cover from precipitation. Each of eight treatments was replicated four times per species. Seed from each plot was kept separate and sown back in its plot of origin to provide the next generation. For both Brassica and Chenopodium, R frequency changed between generations. In Brassica R frequency declined consistently from an initial 0.5 and, after 2 yr, R plants had disappeared in all replicates in two treatments and averaged <0.126 in the remaining treatments. However, R frequencies in the smaller second generation samples in each year were less consistent. In Chenopodium, R frequency increased consistently from an initial 0.5 in all treatments and replicates during 1995 to average 0.772 on south-facing sites and 0.675 on north-facing sites. However, in 1996 Chenopodium R frequency did not change significantly from that in 1995 for any treatment. Brassica S plants were more fecund that R plants, except in shaded conditions, and south-facing plots produced significantly more S seeds than north-facing plots. Both Brassica plants and plots were more productive in 1996 than in 1995. By contrast, Chenopodium was much less productive in 1996, a season with more climatic extremes between plots than 1995. In 1995, R plants were more fecund than S plants in south-facing plots and in covered conditions, but this difference was not detected in 1996. South-facing Chenopodium plots were more productive than north-facing plots in 1995, but the reverse was the case in 1996. Cover resulted in an increase in seed production in Chenopodium on south-facing plots in 1995, but a decline in 1996. We conclude that selection might act against triazine-resistant plants in B. rapa under the climatic conditions in the UK, but in C. album, which is more susceptible to extreme conditions of light and water stress, triazine-resistant phenotypes might predominate in low stress cool moist conditions. We suggest that a relationship might exist between the overall climatic tolerance of a species, and climate thresholds beyond which herbicide-resistant phenotypes might spread. Thus, in the absence of herbicide, it is not inevitable that the frequency of R phenotypes will decline in field conditions.
