This article examines biblical allusions in Simone Weil's “On the Right Use of School Studies,” in which she argues that study can train our attention to God and neighbor. Focusing on Weil's use of Jesus' teachings that mention bread, meals, and table service, this article reveals an underlying theme of Eucharist (communion) in Weil's essay on study. Together with Weil's comment that studies are “like a sacrament,” this analysis suggests that Weil offers a “eucharistic pedagogy” shaped by her mystical theology of Eucharist, a theology itself shaped by George Herbert's English-language poem “Love.” Throughout, the article compares Weil's original French with its English translation, noting where the translation obscures her use of the Bible or her theology, and it also examines the Greek biblical text, since Weil read the New Testament in its Greek original. The article concludes with a critique of Weil's educational vision, which relies on a dyadic vision of eucharist, and suggests that a communal vision of eucharist can support a social vision of education.

This study assessed the seroprevalence of brucellosis and its risk factors in migratory nomads in the Fars province of Iran. Active brucellosis was defined as the combination of clinical symptoms, including fever, chills, night sweats, headache, low back pain, arthralgia, or myalgia, and positive laboratory testing, including either a serum agglutination test (SAT) ⩾1:80 with a 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) test ⩾1:40, or a SAT <1:80 combined with a positive Coombs Wright test (CWT) at a titre of at least threefold higher than SAT titre results. For the 536 participants, the female (316, 59%) to male (220, 41%) ratio was 1·4 and the participants' mean age was 32·4 ± 18·9 (range 1–96) years. Of all participants, 325 (60·6%) showed clinical symptoms; in symptomatic participants, the Rose Bengal plate test was positive in 33 (6·1%) cases, the SAT was positive in 18 (3·3%) cases, and the 2-ME test was positive in 30 (5·5%) cases. Positive SAT and 2-ME results were seen in 18 (3·3%) cases, but a negative SAT and a positive CWT were found in 36 (6·7%) cases. As a result, active brucellosis was detected in 54 cases, indicating a prevalence of 10% (95% confidence interval 8–12). In conclusion, we determined that brucellosis is a prevalent yet neglected disease in this nomadic population. Brucellosis control is not possible as long as these high-risk populations remain neglected.

The most important contribution from astronomy is perhaps social: it fascinates millions of people along the globe. The history of astronomy carries along the very history of humankind.

Le décret travailleur traite des dispositions réglementaires relatives à la prévention des risques liés aux travaux sous rayonnements ionisants. À ce titre, il complète le système réglementaire existant qui traite de la prévention des risques en général. Dans ce texte, apparaît la notion d’étude de poste de travail : ce concept ne doit pas être traité de façon indépendante et centré exclusivement sur le risque d’exposition aux rayonnements ionisants. Dans le cadre de la mise en place d’une organisation de prévention des risques, cette notion d’étude de poste doit être appliquée comme un élément complémentaire des dispositions existantes de prévention des risques. Sur l’établissement de La Hague, une politique de prévention des risques est mise en œuvre qui s’appuie sur une organisation par processus « santé sécurité ». Celle-ci associe l’ensemble de secteurs qui ont en charge la prévention des risques : la sécurité au travail, la santé au travail et la radioprotection. Cette organisation a permis de développer depuis de nombreuses années une approche pluridisciplinaire dans le domaine de la maîtrise des risques s’appuyant sur un édifice documentaire et méthodologique complémentaire dont l’ensemble constitue l’étude de poste.

Cavitation erosion is a current wear type in hydraulic turbines, on pump impellers, on ship propellers, valves, heat-exchanger tubes and other hydraulic structures in contact with high-velocity liquids subjected to pressure changes. Much effort has been done to optimise the design and operating parameters in order to avoid cavitation wear for the equipment. But, this type of wear has also been observed in mechanical devices which such as plain bearings, seals, orifices in which fluid goes through severe restrictions. Cavitation damage may occur when surfaces in contact with fluid are subjected to vibrations, e.g.: water-cooled Diesel-engine cylinder liner. Sometimes, cavitation can initiate other types of wear such as adhesion or abrasion because of wear particles produced at the friction interface, making the failure analysis more difficult.Cavitation wear mechanisms were showed through three industrial examples. The first one is a hydrodynamic plain bearing which was heavily damaged by cavitation wear due to flow instability. The second one concerns a low speed translating plain bearing. Firstly, abrasion traces were observed on the contact surface. But a deeper study showed that solid particles produced by cavitation wear had been the main cause of the abrasion wear. The last example presents several cases of cavitation damage in oil lubricated plain bearing observed in medium/slow speed diesel engine for marine or power station applications. Because of fluctuation of radial force from crankshaft and instability of lubricant flow, variation of oil pressure can be sufficient to produce bubble inception, collapse and microjet formation process.
