This paper is concerned with the computation of asymptotic blocking probabilities for a generalized Erlangian system which results when M independent Poisson streams of traffic with rates access a trunk group of C circuits with traffic from stream k requiring Ak circuits which are simultaneously held and released after a time which is randomly distributed with unit mean and independent of earlier arrivals and holding times. A call from stream k is lost if on arrival less than Ak circuits are available. Although exact expressions for the blocking probabilities are known, their computation is unwieldy for even moderate-sized switches. It is shown that as the size of the switch increases in that both the traffic rates and trunk capacity are scaled together, simple asymptotic expressions for the blocking probabilities are obtained. In particular the expression is different for light, moderate and heavy loads. The approach is via exponential centering and large deviations and provides a unified framework for the analysis.

This paper is concerned with blocking and loss probabilities in circuit-switched networks. We show that when the capacity of links and the offered traffic are increased together, a limiting regime emerges in which loss probabilities are as if links block independently, with blocking probabilities given by the solution of a simple convex programming problem. We then show that an approximate procedure, based on solving Erlang&s formula under the assumption of independent blocking, produces a unique solution when routes are fixed, and that under the limiting regime the estimates of loss probabilities obtained from the procedure converge to the correct values.

From normal limiting distributions of suitably normed sequences of Galton–Watson processes or Galton-Watson processes with immigration, with initial states tending to ∞, we can derive local limit theorems for the transition probabilities Qn (i, j) and Pn (i, j) in the non-critical case, when initial state i and final state j tend to ∞ with n.

In a recent paper Green (1976) obtained some conditional limit theorems for the absorption time of left-continuous random walk. His methods require that in the driftless case the increment distribution has exponentially decreasing tails and that the same is true for a transformed distribution in the case of negative drift.

Here we take a different approach which will produce Green's results under minimal conditions. Limit theorems are given for the maximum as the initial position of the random walk tends to infinity.

This paper develops the notion of the limiting age of an absorbing Markov chain, conditional on the present state. Chains with a single absorbing state {0} are considered and with such a chain can be associated a return chain, obtained by restarting the original chain at a fixed state after each absorption. The limiting age, A(j), is the weak limit of the time given Xn = j (n → ∞).

A criterion for the existence of this limit is given and this is shown to be fulfilled in the case of the return chains constructed from the Galton–Watson process and the left-continuous random walk. Limit theorems for A (J) (J → ∞) are given for these examples.
