This study investigates the dynamics of various particles within the plasma sheath, focusing on the influence of secondary emissions from charged dust particles. The research concentrates on backscattered electron emission (BEE), inelastic reflection emission (IRE) and true-secondary electron emission (TEE) as key contributors to the behaviour of dust particles within the plasma sheath. Employing the semi-empirical model of Furman and Pivi (F-P model), the study defines the total emission of secondary electrons (EES), comprising these three types. The analysis aims to enhance our understanding of the complex interplay between secondary emission phenomena and the dynamics of charged particles within the plasma sheath, contributing valuable insights to the field. Furthermore, a comparative study has been conducted between the results obtained from the emission of secondary electrons according to the Sternglass theory and the emission of secondary electrons obtained using the F-P model. It is observed that the secondary electron emission (SEE) from the dust, based on the F-P model, demonstrates more pronounced effects on the sheath characteristics, particularly when considering lower values of the superextensive electron parameter ‘$q$’.

This paper investigates the influence of compressibility on the internal wave modes and the density gradient-driven Rayleigh–Taylor (R–T) instability in magnetized strongly coupled dusty plasmas. The dusty magnetohydrodynamic model is formulated for compressible fluids, accounting for the effects of weakly coupled electrons/ions and strongly coupled dust particles under the influence of the gravitational field. The effect of the magnetic field on the dust dynamics has been incorporated through the magnetic force on the electrons and ions in quasineutral dusty plasmas. A dispersion relation of the R–T instability has been derived which has been modified because of the compressibility effect, dust acoustic wave speed and viscoelastic coefficients. The shear Alfvén and compressional viscoelastic wave modes become coupled in the dispersion characteristics. The modified R–T instability criterion is derived in terms of the Alfvén speed, viscoelastic effects and dust grain parameters. The graphical illustrations show that the growth rate of R–T instability has been suppressed due to compressibility, viscoelastic coefficients and dust acoustic speed. The results are useful to discuss the development of R–T instability in magnetized astrophysical dusty plasmas.

A numerical study of the homo-interactions between two falling droplets and between two rising bubbles in a strongly coupled dusty plasma medium is presented in this article. The strongly coupled dusty plasma is considered as a viscoelastic fluid using the generalized hydrodynamic fluid model formalism. Two factors that affect homo-interactions are taken into account: the initial spacing and the coupling strength of the medium. Three different spacings between two droplets are simulated: widely, medium and closely. In each case, the coupling strength has been given as mild–strong and strong. It is shown that the overall dynamic is governed by the competition between the acceleration of two droplets/bubbles due to gravity and the interaction due to the closeness of the droplets/bubbles. Particularly in viscoelastic fluids, apart from the initial separation, shear waves originating from rotating vortices are responsible for the closeness of two droplets or bubbles. Several two-dimensional simulations have been carried out. This work is a continuation of the work done in Parts 1 (Dharodi & Das, J. An experimental study to investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the propagation of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) has been carried out in hydrogen plasma containing two-temperature electrons and dust grains. It is a first step in understanding the propagation properties of IAWs in such an environment. A low-pressure hot cathode discharge method is chosen for plasma production. The desired two-electron groups with distinct temperatures are achieved by inserting two magnetic cages with a cusp-shaped magnetic field of different surface field strengths in the same chamber. The dust grains are dropped into the plasma with the help of a dust dropper, which gain negative charges by interacting with the plasma. The IAWs are excited with the help of a mesh grid inserted into the plasma. A planar Langmuir probe is used as a detector to detect the IAWs. The time-of-flight technique has been applied to measure the phase velocity of the IAWs. The results suggest that in the presence of a magnetic field, the phase velocity of IAWs increases, whereas introducing the dust particles leads to the lower phase velocity. The magnetic field is believed to have a significant effect on the wave damping. This study will aid in utilising IAWs as a diagnostic tool to estimate plasma parameters in the presence of an external magnetic field.

The transport phenomena of dust particles have been widely observed in fusion plasmas. In this article, we report the observations of dust fragmentations in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). A dust particle splits into two daughter particles and their motions are recorded before and after the breakup with a fast video camera. The trajectories of the daughter particles in the experiment are consistent with equation-of-motion simulations. The stability of a rotating charged particle in the plasma is briefly discussed.

The application scopes of two different reductive perturbation methods to derive the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation and coupled KdV (CKdV) equation in two-temperature-ion dusty plasma are given by using the particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical method in the present paper. It suggests that the reductive perturbation method (RPM) is valid if the amplitude of the CKdV solitary wave is small enough. However, for the KdV solitary wave, RPM is valid not only if the amplitude of the KdV solitary wave is small enough, but also if the nonlinear coefficient of the KdV equation is not tending to zero.

An experimental investigation of the stereocamera's systematic error is carried out to optimize three-dimensional (3-D) dust observation on the HL-2A tokamak. It is found that a larger 3-D region occupied by all calibration points is able to reduce the 3-D reconstruction systematic error of the stereocamera. In addition, the 3-D reconstruction is the most accurate around the region where the calibration points are located. Based on these experimental results, the design of the stereocamera on the HL-2A tokamak is presented, and a set of practical procedures to optimize the 3-D reconstruction accuracy of the stereocamera are proposed.

The reflection and transmission of an incident solitary wave with an arbitrary propagation direction due to an interface are investigated in the present paper. It is found that the propagation direction of the transmitted solitary wave depends on not only the propagation direction of the incident solitary wave, but also on the system parameters such as the masses, the number densities of dust particles in two different regions. Dependence of the transmission angle on the plasma parameters and incident angle are given analytically. Moreover, the number and amplitude of transmitted solitary waves and reflected solitary waves are also given when there is only one exact incident solitary wave. Our result has potential application, for example, we can devise an appropriate experiment to measure the differences of the masses and number densities of dust particles between two different regions by using our present results. Furthermore, we can also measure the electric charge of a dust particle by devising an appropriate experiment by using our results.

We study the effect of negatively charged dust on the magnetic-field-aligned polarisation electrostatic field ($\boldsymbol {E}_{\parallel }$) using Cassini's RPWS/LP in situ measurements during the ‘ring-grazing’ orbits. We derive a general expression for $\boldsymbol {E}_{\parallel }$ and estimate for the first time in situ $\lVert \boldsymbol {E}_{\parallel } \rVert$ (approximately $10^{-5} \, \text {V}\, \text {m}^{-1}$) near the Janus and Epimetheus rings. We further demonstrate that the presence of the negatively charged dust close to the ring plane ($\vert \text {Z} \vert \lesssim 0.11 \, \text {R}_{s}$) amplifies $\lVert \boldsymbol {E}_{\parallel } \rVert$ by at least one order of magnitude and reverses its direction due to the effect of the charged dust gravitational and inertial forces. Such reversal confines the electrons at the magnetic equator within the dusty region, around $0.047 \, \text {R}_{s}$ above the ring plane. Furthermore, we discuss the role of the collision terms, in particular the ion–dust drag force, in amplifying $\boldsymbol {E}_{\parallel }$. These results imply that the charged dust, as small as nanometres in size, can have a significant influence on the plasma transport, in particular ambipolar diffusion along the magnetic field lines, and so their presence must be taken into account when studying such dynamical processes.

Different kinds of waves and instabilities in the F-region of the ionosphere excited by the relative streaming of the dust beam to the background plasma are studied in the present paper. The dispersion relations of different waves are obtained on different time scales. It is found from our numerical results that there are both a stable upper hybrid wave on the electron vibration time scale and a stable dust ion cyclotron wave on the ion vibration time scale. However, the chaotic behaviour appears on the dust particles vibration time scale due to the relative streaming of the dust particles to the background plasma. Such instabilities may drive plasma irregularities that could affect radar backscatter from the clouds.

Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability plays a significant role in transport and mixing in various media such as hydrodynamic fluids, plasmas, geophysical flows and astrophysical situations. In this paper, we numerically explore this instability for a two-dimensional strongly coupled dusty plasma medium with rotational shear flows. We study this medium using a generalized hydrodynamic fluid model which treats it as a viscoelastic fluid. We consider the specific cases of rotating vorticity with abrupt radial profiles of rotation. In particular, single-circulation and multi-circulation vorticity shell profiles have been chosen. We observe the KH vortices at each circular interface between two relative rotating flows along with a pair of ingoing and outgoing wavefronts of transverse shear waves. Our studies show that due to the interplay between KH vortices and shear waves in the strongly coupled medium, the mixing and transport behaviour are much better than those of standard inviscid hydrodynamic fluids. In the interest of substantiating the mixing and transport behaviour, the generalized hydrodynamic fluid model is extended to include Lagrangian tracer particles. The numerical dispersion of these tracer particles in a flow provides an estimate of the diffusion in such a medium. We present the preliminary observations of tracer distribution (cluster formation) and diffusion (mean square displacement) across the medium.

We investigate the influence of charged dust on the incoherent scatter from the D-region ionosphere. Incoherent scatter is observed with high-power, large aperture radars and results from electromagnetic waves scattering at electrons that are coupled to other charged components through plasma oscillations. The influence of charged dust can hence be considered an effect of dusty plasma. The D-region contains meteoric smoke particles that are of nanometre size and form from incoming ablating meteors. Detection of such charged dust in the incoherent scatter spectrum from the D-region has previously been proposed and studied to some degree. We here present model calculations to investigate the influence of the charged dust component with a size distribution, instead of the one size dust components assumed in other works. The developed code to calculate the incoherent scatter spectrum from the D-region including dust particles with different sizes and different positive and negative charge states is made available (https://doi.org/10.18710/GHZIIY). We investigate how sizes, number density and charge state of the dust influence the spectrum during different ionospheric conditions. We consider the ionospheric parameters for the location of the EISCAT VHF radar during a year and find that conditions are most suitable for dust detection in winter below 80 km at times with increased electron densities. The prospects to derive dust parameters increase, when the incoherent scatter observations are combined with those of other instruments to provide independent information on electron density, neutral density and temperature.

In part 1 (V. S. Dharodi and A. Das, J. Plasma Phys. 87 (02), 905870216 (2021)), we simulated the individual dynamics of a bubble (a localized low-density region) and a droplet (a localized high-density region) in a strongly coupled dusty plasma. We observed that under the influence of gravity, the result of a pair of counter-rotating vorticity lobes causes the bubble to rise and droplet to fall. With an interest to understand the hetero- (bubble–droplet) interactions between them, we extend this study to their combined evolution through the following two arrangements. First, both are placed side-by-side in a row at the same height. We observe that the overall dynamics is governed by the competition between the net vertical motion induced by gravity and rotational motion induced by the pairing between two co-rotating inner vorticity lobes. In the second arrangement, the vertically aligned bubble (below) and droplet (above) after collision exchange their partners and subsequently start to move horizontally in opposite directions away from each other. This horizontal movement becomes slower with increasing coupling strength. For these arrangements, we consider varying the distance between the fixed-size bubble and droplet, and varying the coupling strength. To visualize the bubble–droplet interactions, a series of two-dimensional simulations have been conducted in the framework of an incompressible generalized hydrodynamic viscoelastic fluid model.

One of the limitations in studying dusty plasmas is that many of the important properties of the dust (like the charge) are directly coupled to the surrounding plasma conditions rather than being determined independently. The application of high-intensity ultraviolet (UV) sources to generate discharging photoelectric currents may provide an avenue for developing methods of controlling dust charge. Careful selection of the parameters of the UV source and dust material may even allow for this to be accomplished with minimal perturbation of the background plasma. The Auburn Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory (MPRL) has developed a ‘proof-of-concept’ experiment for this controlled photo-discharging of dust; a high-intensity, near-UV source was used to produce large changes in the equilibrium positions of lanthanum hexaboride ($\textrm {LaB}_6$) particles suspended in an argon DC glow discharge with negligible changes in the potential, density and temperature profiles of the background plasma. The shifts in equilibrium position of the dust are consistent with a reduction in dust charge. Video analysis is used to quantify the changes in position, velocity and acceleration of a test particle under the influence of the UV and Langmuir probes are used to measure the effects on the plasma.

Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) and buoyancy-driven (BD) instabilities are driven by gravity in a fluid system with inhomogeneous density. The paper investigates these instabilities for a strongly coupled dusty plasma medium. This medium has been represented here in the framework of the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) fluid model which treats it as a viscoelastic medium. The incompressible limit of the GHD model is considered here. The RT instability is explored both for gradual and sharp density gradients stratified against gravity. The BD instability is discussed by studying the evolution of a rising bubble (a localized low-density region) and a falling droplet (a localized high-density region) in the presence of gravity. Since both the rising bubble and falling droplet have symmetry in spatial distribution, we observe that a falling droplet process is equivalent to a rising bubble. We also find that both the gravity-driven instabilities get suppressed with increasing coupling strength of the medium. These observations have been illustrated analytically as well as by carrying out two-dimensional nonlinear simulations. Part 2 of this paper is planned to extend the present study of the individual evolution of a bubble and a droplet to their combined evolution in order to understand the interaction between them.

This paper investigates the influence of the driving frequency on the dynamics of a single dust particle in argon radiofrequency discharge. A one-dimensional fluid model is presented and solved in the entire inter-electrode domain using the finite difference method. In order to solve the particle equation of motion, the coefficients describing the amplification and the damping of the dust particle oscillations are analytically calculated around the equilibrium position, these coefficients allow us to find the relation between the plasma and dust parameters. The results obtained cover the discharge characteristics, the charge and the dynamics of the dust particle. It has been found that the driving frequency has a significant effect on not only the discharge properties but also on the damped oscillatory motion and the equilibrium position of the dust particle. Hence, these oscillations become closer to the electrodes with increasing driving frequency whereas the dust equilibrium position becomes relatively farther from the powered electrode when the dust size decreases.

The excitation of low frequency dust acoustic (or dust density) waves in a dusty plasma can be driven by the flow of ions relative to dust. We consider the nonlinear development of the ion–dust streaming instability in a highly collisional plasma, where the ion and dust collision frequencies are a significant fraction of their corresponding plasma frequencies. This collisional parameter regime may be relevant to dusty plasma experiments under microgravity or ground-based conditions with high gas pressure. One-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are presented, which take into account collisions of ions and dust with neutrals, and a background electric field that drives the ion flow. Ion flow speeds of the order of a few times thermal are considered. Waveforms of the dust density are found to have broad troughs and sharp crests in the nonlinear phase. The results are compared with the nonlinear development of the ion–dust streaming instability in a plasma with low collisionality.
