Most massive stars (up to 100%) are thought to be in binary systems. The multiplicity of massive stars seems to be intrinsically linked to their formation and evolution, and so Massive Young Stellar Objects are key in observing this early stage of star formation. We have surveyed hundreds of MYSOs across the Galaxy from the RMS catalogue, using UKIDSS and VVV point source data. Preliminary results show binary fractions of 44±3% for the UKIDSS sample and 32±3% for the VVV sample. In addition we use the K-band magnitudes as a proxy for the companion mass, and find a significant fraction of the detected companions have estimated mass ratios greater than 0.5, which suggests a deviation from the capture formation scenario.

Luminous Blue Variable stars (LBVs) are rare and enigmatic. Often cited as evolutionary stages in the single-star evolution, the idea that binary evolution produces the LBV state was already considered, 30 years ago.

It is now commonly accepted that a significant part of massive stars are born in multiple systems. One aspect that also emerged is that massive stars have on average at least two companions, i.e. they are triples. This immediately implies that a number of LBVs should have evolved as part of multiple systems.

While some LBVs are confirmed as binaries, different methods were used to derive their multiplicity, with different results. We report on a systematic search for multiplicity using spectroscopy, interferometry in a sample of 20 LBVs. Spectroscopy provides us with a bias-corrected binary fraction of $\[62_{ - 24}^{ + 38}\]$%, and a percentage of 50–70% is found from interferometry. This has a high impact on the way that these objects might be formed.

Exploring the low-mass end of the companion mass function around massive stars is of crucial importance to constrain massive star formation theories. We present a high-contrast imaging study of 20 O- and early B-type stars in the Scorpius OB1 association. From the analysis of VLT/SPHERE data, we identify a total of 789 sources. The data probe the brown dwarf regime around massive stars, resulting in the discovery of large-separation multiple systems with mass-ratios as low as 0.001 (comparable to Jupiter-Sun mass-ratio).

Stellar mergers produce more massive, rejuvenated (strongly magnetic) stars, with potentially peculiar properties, and can be detected as luminous red novae. Using a grid of detailed 1D binary evolution models, we aim to determine which binary systems are likely to merge and at what evolutionary stage. This will tell us more about the merger products, and might help us understand some of the trends found in observed single- and multiple-star populations.

The first magnetic field in a star other than the Sun was detected in 1947 in the star 78 Vir. Today, we know that about 10% of these intermediate-mass and high-mass stars have strong, large-scale surface magnetic fields whose origin has remained a mystery till today. It has been suggested that merging of main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars could produce such strong fields. The massive star τ Sco is a well-known member of the group of magnetic stars and is a blue straggler given its apparently young age compared to that of other members of the Upper Scorpius association. Here, we present 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the coalescence of two massive main-sequence stars and 1D stellar evolution computations of the subsequent evolution of the merger product that can explain τ Sco’s magnetic field, apparent youth and other observed characteristics. We argue that field amplification in stellar mergers is a general mechanism to form strongly-magnetised massive stars. Such stars are promising progenitors of magnetars, which may give rise to some of the enigmatic fast radio bursts, and their supernova explosions may be affected by the strong magnetic fields.

In the regime of hot stars, winds were not seen as a common thing until the era of UV astronomy. Since we have access to the UV wavelength range, it has become clear that winds are not an exotic phenomenon limited to some special objects, but actually ubiquitous among hot and massive stars. The opacities due to spectral lines are the decisive ingredient that allows hot, massive stars to launch powerful winds. While the fundamental principles of these so-called line-driven winds have been realized decades ago, their proper quantitative prediction is still a major challenge today. Established theoretical and empirical descriptions have allowed us to make major progress on all astrophysical scales. However, we are now reaching their limitations as we still lack various fundamental insights on the nature of hot star winds, thereby hampering us from drawing deeper conclusions, not least when dealing with stellar or sub-stellar companions. This has spawned a new generation of researchers searching for answers with a yet unprecedented level of detail in observational and new theoretical approaches.

In these proceedings, the fundamental principles of driving hot star winds will be briefly reviewed. Starting from the classical CAK theory and its extensions, over Monte Carlo and recent comoving-frame-based simulations, the different methods to describe and model the acceleration of hot star winds will be introduced. The review continues with briefly discussing instabilities as well as qualitative and quantitative insights for OB- and Wolf-Rayet-star winds. Moreover, the challenges of companions and their impact on radiation-driven winds are outlined.

Some binary stars experience common envelope evolution, which is accompanied by drastic loss of angular momentum, mass, and orbital energy and which leaves behind close binaries often involving at least one white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. The best studied phase of common envelope is the dynamical inspiral lasting few original orbital periods. We show theoretical interpretation of observations of V1309 Sco and AT2018bwo revealing that binaries undergo substantial prolonged mass loss before the dynamical event amounting up to few solar masses. This mass loss is concentrated in the orbital plane in the form of an outflow or a circumbinary disk. Collision between this slower mass loss and the subsequent faster dynamical ejection powers a bright red transient. The resulting radiative shock helps to shape the explosion remnant and provides a site of dust and molecule formation.

The study of white dwarfs, the end stage of stellar evolution for more than 95% of stars, is critical to bettering our understanding of the late stages of the lives of low mass stars. In particular, the post main sequence evolution of binary star systems is complex, and the identification and analysis of double degenerate systems is a crucial step in constraining models of binary star systems. Binary white dwarfs in open star clusters are particularly useful because cluster parameters such as distance, metal content, and total system age are more tightly constrained than for field double degenerates. Here we use the precision astrometry from the Gaia Data Release 2 catalog to study two other white dwarfs which were identified as candidate double degenerates in the field of the open star cluster NGC 6633. One of the two objects, LAWDS 4, is found to have astrometric properties fully consistent with that of the cluster. In such a case, the object is significantly overluminous for a single white dwarf, strongly indicating binarity. The second candidate binary, LAWDS 7, appears to be inconsistent with cluster membership, though a more thorough analysis is necessary to properly quantify the probability. At present we are proceeding to model the photometric and spectroscopic data for both objects as if they were cluster member double degenerates. Results of this latter analysis are forthcoming. Our results will add crucial data to the study of binary star evolution in open star clusters.

We present a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxies at z⩾ 5using the state-of-the-art models for the multi-phase ISM, star formation, and stellar feedback from the FIRE project. We present a series of key results from these simulations, including the stellar mass–halo mass relation, the ultraviolet luminosity functions, dust attenuation and dust temperatures, the ubiquitous formation of bound star clusters, morphology and clumpiness, and the escape fractions of ionizing photons from high-redshift galaxies. We discuss how different simulations in the literature agree and disagree and what observations are most useful for testing the models in the era of ALMA and JWST.

Observations of star-forming galaxies in the distant Universe have confirmed the importance of massive stars in shaping galaxy emission and evolution. Distant stellar populations are unresolved, and the limited data available must be interpreted in the context of stellar population models. Understanding these populations, and their evolution with age and heavy element content is key to interpreting processes such as supernovae, cosmic reionization and the chemical enrichment of the Universe. With the upcoming launch of JWST and observations of galaxies within a billion years of the Big Bang, the uncertainties in modelling massive stars - particularly their interactions with binary companions - are becoming increasingly important to our interpretation of the high redshift Universe. In turn, observations of distant stellar populations provide ever stronger tests against which to gauge the success of, and flaws in, current massive star models. Here we briefly review the current status binary stellar population synthesis.

Young star clusters are a promising environment for forming binary black holes. Such binaries may form dynamically or via binary star evolution or through the interplay of these two channels. To study these formation pathways, we have performed high precision direct N-body simulations of low-mass (M < 1000 M⊙) young star clusters. The simulations were carried out with the code Nbody6++GPU coupled with the population synthesis code MOBSE. Our results highlight the importance of dynamics to form massive black hole binaries even in low-mass young star clusters.

Over the last decade, our abilities to observe the internal kinematics of star clusters have drastically increased. Where a few years back only small numbers of bright stars with radial velocity measurements were available, we can nowadays study the three-dimensional motions of large stellar samples, thanks to the combined datasets gathered by state-of-art spectrographs and astrometric satellites. In this work, I summarise the contribution of integral-field spectrographs, in particular MUSE, to this paradigm change. Using dedicated software tools, we were able to overcome a fundamental limitation of spectroscopy and advance to the crowded cluster centres. This allowed us to study the central kinematics in unprecedented detail and to start uncovering the populations of black holes that reside in massive star clusters.

We have been investigating populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of more than 300 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with themoccacode.[-120pt] One of the main questions we have intended to answer is whether most CVs in GCs are dynamically formed or not. Contrary to what has been argued for a long time, we found that dynamical destruction of primordial CV progenitors is much stronger in GCs than dynamical formation of CVs. In particular, we found that, on average, the detectable CV population is predominantly composed of CVs formed via a typical common envelope phase (≳70 per cent). However, core-collapsed models tend to have higher fractions of bright CVs than non-core-collapsed ones, which suggests then that the formation of CVs is indeed slightly favoured through strong dynamical interactions in core-collapsed GCs, due to the high stellar densities in their cores.

High-density cusps of compact remnants are expected to form around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei via dynamical friction and two-body relaxation. Due to the high density, binaries in orbit around the SMBH can frequently undergo close encounters with compact remnants from the cusp. This can affect the gravitational wave merger rate of compact binaries in galactic nuclei. We investigated this process by means of high accuracy few-body simulations, performed with a novel Monte Carlo approach. We find that, around a SgrA*-like SMBH, three-body encounters increase the number of mergers by a factor of 3. This occurs because close encounters can reorient binaries with respect to their orbital plane around the SMBH, increasing the number of Kozai-Lidov induced mergers. We obtain a binary black hole merger rate of ГMW = 1.6 × 10−6 yr−1 per Milky Way-like nucleus.

Three-body interactions of stellar-mass binaries with intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in nuclei of globular clusters may produce specific features that may serve as an independent indicator of existence of the IMBHs. By means of direct N-body integrations we follow the dynamical evolution of globular clusters of moderate extension and mass with 50% binary population over a time span of ≍ 0.8 Gyr and compare the cases with and without the primordial binaries as well as with and without the IMBH. We show that (i) presence of the IMBH leads to rapid formation of a density cusp regardless of the initial binary fraction, (ii) binary rich clusters with the IMBH produce high velocity escapers at a rate of ≍ 0.1 Myr−1 and (iii) clusters hosting an IMBH together with high number of binaries form a denser halo of marginally unbound stars than clusters that lack either the IMBH or the binary population.

We present results of a supernova lightcurve population synthesis, predicting the range of possible supernova lightcurves arising from a population of progenitor stars that include interacting binary systems. We show that the known diversity of supernova lightcurves can be interpreted as arising from binary interactions. Given detailed models of the progenitor stars, we are able to the determine what parameters within these stars determine the shape of their supernova lightcurve. The primary factors are the mass of supernova ejecta and the mass of hydrogen in the final progenitor. We find that there is a continuum of lightcurve behaviour from type IIP, IIL, to IIb supernovae related to the range of hydrogen and ejecta masses. Most type IIb supernovae arise from a relatively narrow range of initial masses from 10 to 15 M⊙. We also find a few distinct lightcurves that are the result of stellar mergers.

We present the results of a decade-long radial velocity monitoring campaign of post-AGB binaries. We derived the orbital elements of 33 post-AGB binaries. We find a companion mass distribution centred around 1.09 M⊙ with a very large spread. All the post-AGB binaries in our sample are expected to have filled their Roche lobes while at giant dimensions. Current binary evolution models are unable to explain the observed distribution of orbits.

INTEGRAL has been observing the γ-ray sky for 15 years and has discovered many high-energy sources of various nature. Among them, active galactic nuclei (AGN), low or high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB and HMXB) and cataclysmic variables (CV) are rather difficult to differentiate from one another at high energies and require further optical or near-infrared observations to constrain their exact nature. Using near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic data from ESO VLT/ISAAC, we aim to reveal the nature of 14 high-energy INTEGRAL sources and improve the census of X-ray binaries. By comparing their spectral features to stellar spectra atlases, we identified 5 new CVs, 2 low or intermediate mass X-ray binaries, 2 HMXBs and 5 AGNs.

Post-AGB stars are the final stage of evolution of low-intermediate mass stars (M < 8 Mʘ). Those in binary systems have stable circumbinary discs. Using data from Herschel (PACS/SPIRE), we extend the SEDs of 50 galactic post-AGB binary systems to sub-millimetre wavelengths and use the slope of the SED as a diagnostic tool to probe the presence of large grains. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code (MCMax), we create a large grid of models to quantify the observed spectral indices, and use the presence of large grains in the disc as a proxy for evolution.

UV radiation plays a critical role in the chemistry of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around evolved stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). However, the effects of all potential sources of UV radiation have not been included in models. We present preliminary results of adding an internal source of UV to the CSE chemistry and predict large enhancements of atomic and ionic species arising from photo-destruction of parent species. Observations of atomic carbon towards the UV-bright AGB star o Cet are consistent with the modelling. In addition, we calculate the precise depth dependence of the CO photodissociation rate in an expanding CSE. We incorporate this within a chemical network active in the outflows of AGB stars, which includes 933 species and 15182 reactions. Our results show that the CO envelope size is about 30% smaller at half abundance than the most commonly used radius reported by Mamon et al. (1988).
