We prove that a Banach algebra B that is a completion of the universal enveloping algebra of a finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak {g}$ satisfies a polynomial identity if and only if the nilpotent radical $\mathfrak {n}$ of $\mathfrak {g}$ is associatively nilpotent in B. Furthermore, this holds if and only if a certain polynomial growth condition is satisfied on $\mathfrak {n}$ .

We obtain closed-form expressions involving eigenvalues, the condition number and/or the angle between the projections in the following different situations: when X = X with X = (Xt)t ≥ 0 being a Markov process, X is the subordination of X in the sense of Bochner, and X is a non-Markovian process which is obtained by time-changing X with an inverse of a subordinator. It turns out that these spectral projections correlation functions have different expressions with respect to these classes of processes which enables to identify substantial and deep properties about their dynamics. This interesting fact can be used to design original statistical tests to make inferences, for example, about the path properties of the process (presence of jumps), distance from symmetry (self-adjoint or non-self-adjoint) and short-to-long-range dependence. To reveal the usefulness of our results, we apply them to a class of non-self-adjoint Markov semigroups studied in Patie and Savov (to appear, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 179p), and then time-change by subordinators and their inverses.

We consider a linear operator pencil with complex parameter mapping one Hilbert space onto another. It is known that the resolvent is analytic in an open annular region of the complex plane centred at the origin if and only if the coefficients of the Laurent series satisfy a doubly-infinite set of left and right fundamental equations and are suitably bounded. If the resolvent has an isolated singularity at the origin we propose a recursive orthogonal decomposition of the domain and range spaces that enables us to construct the key nonorthogonal projections that separate the singular and regular components of the resolvent and subsequently allows us to find a formula for the basic solution to the fundamental equations. We show that each Laurent series coefficient in the singular part of the resolvent can be approximated by a weakly convergent sequence of finite-dimensional matrix operators and we show how our analysis can be extended to find a global expression for the resolvent of a linear pencil in the case where the resolvent has only a finite number of isolated singularities.

We use the best constants in the Khintchine inequality to generalise a theorem of Kato [‘Similarity for sequences of projections’, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc.73(6) (1967), 904–905] on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of unconditional Schauder decompositions in $\ell _{p}$ spaces. We also sharpen a stability theorem of Vizitei [‘On the stability of bases of subspaces in a Banach space’, in: Studies on Algebra and Mathematical Analysis, Moldova Academy of Sciences (Kartja Moldovenjaska, Chişinău, 1965), 32–44; (in Russian)] in the case of unconditional Schauder decompositions in any Banach space.

Let $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}H$ be a linear unbounded operator in a Hilbert space. It is assumed that the resolvent of $H$ is a compact operator and $H-H^*$ is a Hilbert–Schmidt operator. Various integro-differential operators satisfy these conditions. It is shown that $H$ is similar to a normal operator and a sharp bound for the condition number is suggested. We also discuss applications of that bound to spectrum perturbations and operator functions.

New criteria and Banach spaces are presented (for example, $GL$-spaces and Banach spaces with property $(\alpha)$) that ensure that the Boolean algebra generated by a pair of bounded, commuting Boolean algebras of projections is itself bounded. The notion of $R$-boundedness plays a fundamental role. It is shown that the strong operator closure of any $R$-bounded Boolean algebra of projections is necessarily Bade complete. Also, for a Dedekind $\sigma <formula form="inline" disc="math" id="frm006"><formtex notation="AMSTeX">$-complete Banach lattice $E$, the Boolean algebra consisting of all band projections in $E$ is $R$-bounded if and only if $E$ has finite cotype. In this situation, every bounded Boolean algebra of projections in $E$ is $R$-bounded and has a Bade complete strong closure.

Decompositions of spectral type are obtained for closed Hilbert space operators with empty resolvent set, but whose square has closure which is spectral. Krein space situations are also discussed.

We define and study some properties of spectral maximal projections of a bounded operator on a complex Banach space. Then we apply these results to the new concepts of weakly projection-relative decomposable operators and projection-relative decomposable operators in the spirit of the works of C. Foias [6], A. Jafarian [7], I. Erdelyi and R. Lange [5].

A sufficient condition is given under which the sum, product and indeed any polynomial combination of a well-bounded operator and a commuting real scalar-type spectral operator is well-bounded. This generalizes a result of Gillespie for Hilbert space operators. It is shown in particular that if $X$ is a UMD space, then the sum of finitely many commuting real scalar-type spectral operators acting on $X$ is a well-bounded operator (a result which fails on general reflexive Banach spaces).

One of the useful features of spectral measures which happen to be equicontinuous is that their associated integration maps are bicontinuous isomorphisms of the corresponding L1-space onto their ranges. It is shown here that equicontinuity is not necessary for this to be the case; a somewhat weaker property suffices. This is of some interest in practice since there are many natural examples of spectral measures which fail to be equiconontinuous.

We describe measurable Hilbert sheaves as Hilbert space objects in a sheaf category constructed from a measure space. These are quite useful for the interpretation of the direct integral of Hilbert spaces as an indexed functor. We set up a framework to put this and similar constructions of operator theory on an indexed categorical footing.

Let X be a closed subspace of LP(μ), where μ is an arbitrary measure and 1 < p < ∞. By extending the scope of spectral integration, we show that every invertible power-bounded linear mapping of X into X has a functional calculus implemented by the algebra of complex-valued functions on the unit circle satisfying the hypotheses of the Strong Marcinkiewicz Multiplier Theorem. This result expands the framework of the Strong Marcinkiewicz Multiplier Theorem to the setting of abstract measure spaces.
