Summary
It was a humid evening in Dubai, but since it was early December it was just cool enough to sit outside and sip our tea. The occasional breeze carried the wafting scent of the jasmine plants that snaked up the walls of the outdoor coffee shop. Despite the pleasant surroundings, the interview was not going well.Ibrahim’s voice – inflected with the Emirati dialect – was laced with anger and exasperation, and now some of it was being directed at me. I knew that “but where are you really from?” was quite possibly the worst question to ask, but I blurted out the words without thinking. All of my training had receded into the background as I tried to process a story that seemed stranger than fiction.
