Preharvest applications of glyphosate can be useful in controlling perennial weeds. Experiments were conducted from 1996 to 1999 to determine whether preharvest glyphosate applications are affected by differences in the amount of soybean canopy present at the time of application by measuring spray deposition and subsequently horsenettle or Canada thistle control. Soybean leaf interference levels were achieved by use of three soybean cultivars with different maturity groups to achieve no leaf interference, moderate leaf interference, and maximum leaf interference, and soybean was planted in three row spacings ranging from 19 to 76 cm. As soybean leaf interference increased, spray coverage of spray deposition cards decreased. There was a similar trend for relative spray volume, determined by intensity of the color change with water-sensitive cards. Row spacing did not influence spray coverage or relative spray volume. Percent change in horsenettle or Canada thistle stems from fall to spring counts was inconsistent. Differences detected in spray coverage did not influence weed control or weed stem density the following spring.

Effects of temperature, relative humidity, and light on MSMA phytotoxicity to wild-type and arsenical herbicide-resistant biotypes of common cocklebur grown from seed collected in Mississippi were evaluated. In growth chamber studies, 20-d-old plants were sprayed with 0.5 kg ai/ha of MSMA, and after 7 d, fresh weight and chlorophyll content were measured to estimate phytotoxicity. All three environmental factors influenced the level of weed resistance. In studies with day/night temperatures of 30/25 C and 500 μmol/m2/s PPFD light with a 14-h photoperiod, phytotoxicity of MSMA at 40% relative humidity was minimal, but was significantly greater at 60 and 90% relative humidities. The resistant (R) biotype was affected less than the susceptible (S) biotype at the higher relative humidities. The level of resistance estimated by fresh weight reduction was greatest at 30/25 C, but was most pronounced at 35/30 C using chlorophyll measurements. Resistance was lowest at 25/20 C by either measurement. MSMA phytotoxicity occurred at light intensities of 75, 500, and 750 μmol/m2/s PPFD; however, biotypic response was greatest at 500, followed by 750 μmol/m2/s PPFD. Resistance of the (R) biotype to MSMA was not significant at 75 μmol/m2/s, suggesting that differentiation between the biotypes for MSMA sensitivity would be difficult under low light.

Outdoor experiments were conducted at two locations in Minnesota to characterize the growth, development, and vegetative reproduction potential of giant burreed grown with and without wild rice. Giant burreed growth was influenced by environment more than the presence of wild rice. Shoots emerged from corms 2 to 3 wk after planting (WAP), and continued throughout the growing season. Giant burreed attained a maximum height of 135 cm with an average 36 shoots/plant. Rhizome production started 4 to 6 WAP, and continued throughout the growing season. Corm formation at the base of shoots started 8 WAP and continued throughout the growing season. Rhizomes grew to a maximum cumulative length of 2500 cm/plant spreading in all directions and produced up to 250 buds/plant. Corm and rhizome bud viability was 15 and 10%, respectively. These data suggest that giant burreed grown in wild rice should be controlled by 2 to 3 wk after emergence to prevent vegetative reproduction.

Recent changes in herbicide registrations and governmental restrictions on field burning raised many management questions for Kentucky bluegrass seed producers, particularly the extent to which useful lives of their stands might be shortened by decreasing crop yields or increasing weed pressure. Tests conducted over the lives of two grass seed stands (1993–1997) evaluated three contrasting methods of postharvest residue management (vacuum sweep, bale/flail chop/rake, and field burn) and 13 herbicide treatments. Downy brome was the primary weed at both the Madras and LaGrande, OR, sites. In nontreated checks and the four least effective herbicide treatments, downy brome populations increased exponentially over time, with year-to-year increases in density averaging 13.1-fold. Competition had easily detected effects on Kentucky bluegrass seed yield at densities of 30 downy brome plants/m2, and crop stands were destroyed beyond 100 to 200 weeds/m2. Both PRE terbacil at 840 g/ha and early POST (EPOST)/late POST (LPOST) split-applied primisulfuron at 20 g/ha per application contained downy brome during the first 2 yr but not the third, when crop injury from terbacil forced reduction in terbacil rate and changes in weed populations overcame primisulfuron. PRE terbacil followed by LPOST primisulfuron, EPOST terbacil plus primisulfuron followed by LPOST primisulfuron, and EPOST/LPOST split-applied terbacil plus primisulfuron achieved excellent control of downy brome until the final years of the study, when control became increasingly erratic as primisulfuron-resistant downy brome proliferated in specific individual plots. Injury from combination terbacil plus primisulfuron treatments reduced yield relative to safest treatments in early years when downy brome population densities were low.

Field studies were conducted at Tifton, GA and Gainesville, FL to quantify the phytotoxicity of endothall formulation, rate, and time of application on peanut in a weed-free experiment. Peanut treated with mono (N,N-dimethylalkylamine) salt of endothall (DMAA endothall) were more necrotic than those treated with dipotassium salt of endothall (DP endothall), though necrosis was temporary. Injury from DMAA endothall at rates of 0.6 to 1.1 kg ai/ha was similar to the standard treatment of bentazon plus paraquat for most parameters. Peanut treated with the highest rate of DMAA endothall (4.5 kg/ha) were more necrotic and took longer to recover than lower rates. The highest rate of DP endothall (4.5 kg ai/ha) stunted peanut more than any DMAA endothall treatment. However, lower rates of DP endothall (0.6 to 2.2 kg/ha) were generally less injurious than DMAA endothall at equivalent rates. Peanut yields were not affected by either formulation of endothall at 0.6 to 1.1 kg/ha, applied from vegetative emergence through 4 wk after emergence.

Research was conducted in central Georgia to determine the influence of norflurazon on bermudagrass stand and production when applied to newly sprigged bermudagrass and in the spring to dormant bermudagrass. Norflurazon at rates up to 1.12 kg ai/ha on newly sprigged bermudagrass caused moderate chlorosis to the emerging leaves but did not adversely influence stand density or ground cover at 60 and 90 days after treatment (DAT). Norflurazon applied to dormant bermudagrass the spring of 1993 resulted in greater than 50% foliage chlorosis at rates ≥ 1.68 kg/ha. Foliage chlorosis was 94% on bermudagrass treated with 3.36 kg/ha 30 DAT and at spring growth initiation. However, chlorosis level was reduced when bermudagrass began rapid growth. Forage production was not influenced by the early season chlorosis when compared to nontreated areas or areas treated with diuron at 1.12 kg/ha and the weed free check.

Various samplers have been developed for taking intact soil cores. Very often, the sampler was used once or twice to take only a few soil cores then it became either obsolete or a burden for maintenance and storage. An economic portable hand-operated soil core sampler was developed to obtain large soil cores with a diameter of 19 cm and a length of 120 cm. The quality of large soil cores was evaluated and compared with that obtained from short cores from each soil horizon. In addition, the large intact column was used to evaluate atrazine transport under the saturated condition. Results showed that the hydraulic conductivity of the large cores were of the same magnitude as that of short cores, except for the A horizon; the hydraulic conductivity of the large cores was about 10 times greater than the short cores. Even though the sampling procedure is labor intensive, the soil sampler has the flexibility to collect different size soil cores and can be constructed at a very low cost (less than $200 including labor). Lastly, the sampler is maintenance free and can be stored easily in a limited space.

Weed science has been and will continue to be an evolving discipline. The evolution and future of weed science will depend greatly on our visions of the future and our willingness to effect and implement change. Thus, the principal question we must ask ourselves is, what do we want weed science to be in the future? This paper, which is only one part of the symposium on the Future of Weed Science, will address the issues involved with teaching. This requires identification of future students and employers, their educational needs based on professional goals, and packaging and presenting the information. Most future agriculture undergraduates and weed science graduate students will need to be recruited, will have minimal background in agriculture, and will include more minorities and women than in the past. We will offer a more interdisciplinary and internationalized curriculum to future students. The curriculum will include traditional courses with greater emphasis on communication skills, business and economics, computer science, agricultural ethics, and interpersonal skills. Courses will be taught to future students by a regional teaching concept that uses electronic media. Teaching and learning about weed science in the future will be exciting, challenging, and unquestionably different from today.

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for EPTC was developed that may be useful for predicting enhanced carbamothioate herbicide degradation in adapted soils. A modified radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure was used to detect antibodies specific for EPTC and establish antibody dilutions for optimum ELISA sensitivity. Antibodies were obtained from a rabbit injected with a butylate-analog protein conjugate. An indirect ELISA subsequently was developed for EPTC with a detection range of 10 to 1280 ng ml−1 in a 1:3 aqueous dilution of a 90:10 (v/v) acetonitrile (ACN):water soil extract. EPTC recovery from soil was > 96%, as determined by conventional gas chromatography. Measurement of low concentrations of residual EPTC with the ELISA was less quantitative than by gas chromatography, but the immunoassay provided a rapid, potentially cost-effective method for screening soils to determine enhanced carbamothioate degradation.

Field experiments were conducted from 1985 through 1989 to evaluate herbicide selectivity and impact on seeding-year yields of spring oat and underseeded alfalfa, and carryover weed control benefits from increased legume-fixed N for second-year dryland no-till corn. PRE metolachlor, pendimethalin, and prodiamine controlled green foxtail and POST bromoxynil or 2,4-DB controlled broadleaf weeds. These herbicides caused 0 to 20% alfalfa injury and 0 to 17% oat injury, and increased oat yield one of three years but did not increase the yield of underseeded alfalfa. POST pyridate, thifensulfuron, and tribenuron were too injurious to either oat, alfalfa, or both crops. Forage yields of annual ‘Nitro’ and perennial ‘Wrangler’ alfalfa seeded alone were greater than when they were underseeded in oat, with herbicides applied in both systems. As a result of drought in 1988 and 1989, yield of second-year corn planted after one-year alfalfa was not increased from potentially greater legume-fixed N. Dryland corn yield following monoculture oat or corn was 254% higher than corn following alfalfa.

Chloramben effectively controlled weeds in lettuce and endive grown on muck soils better than thiobencarb and chlorpropham. Chloramben at 1.1 kg ai/ha controlled two weeds economically important on muck soils, livid amaranth and oakleaf goosefoot. Chloramben applied preemergence at 1.1 kg/ha and higher caused early stunting of lettuce which the lettuce outgrew by harvest. Field-seeded endive was stunted severely at these same rates, severely reducing yield. Transplants improved tolerance of all crops. Effective use rates on muck soils were 25% to 50% of those typically used on mineral soils.

Recent research reported synergism between glufosinate plus very low rates of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)–inhibiting herbicides on select broadleaf weeds. Two field studies, each consisting of four trials, were conducted in 2020 and 2021 in commercial fields with glyphosate-resistant (GR) horseweed in Ontario, Canada. Study 1 evaluated GR horseweed control with glufosinate plus five PPO inhibitors at 5% of the label rate; study 2 evaluated what dose of saflufenacil is needed when co-applied with glufosinate to improve GR horseweed control. In study 1, glufosinate plus very low rates of PPO-inhibiting herbicides provided low GR horseweed control. At site 1, despite the synergistic increase in GR horseweed control with saflufenacil (1.25 g ai ha–1) plus glufosinate (300 g ai ha–1), the level of control did not exceed 42% at 2 and 4 wk after application (WAA); the interaction was additive at 8 WAA. The co-application of glufosinate (300 g ai ha–1) with pyraflufen-ethyl (0.34 g ai ha–1), pyraflufen-ethyl/2,4-D (26.4 g ai ha–1), flumioxazin (5.35 g ai ha–1), fomesafen (12 g ai ha–1), or sulfentrazone (7 g ai ha–1) resulted in an additive interaction for GR horseweed control at 2, 4, and 8 WAA. However, glufosinate plus pyraflufen-ethyl or sulfentrazone was antagonistic at 8 WAA. In study 2, similar doses of saflufenacil were required for 50%, 80%, and 95% GR horseweed control whether glufosinate was included in the mixture or not. Interactions between glufosinate (300 g ai ha–1) plus saflufenacil at 1.56, 3.13, 6.25, and 12.5 g ai ha–1 were antagonistic at 2, 4, and 8 WAA at sites 1, 2, and 3; all other interactions were additive. The results of this research indicate there was little to no benefit of adding very low rates of PPO-inhibiting herbicides to glufosinate to improve GR horseweed control under field conditions.

Sulfentrazone was recently granted food-use tolerance approval for use on Brassica head and stem, as well as Brassica leafy vegetables. To date, one sulfentrazone registrant has listed those crops on its use label. In coastal California multiple crops per year including Brassica vegetables are grown in rapid succession; therefore, to avoid injury to rotational crops, herbicides used in those fields must be carefully selected. Given concerns about the relatively long soil persistence of sulfentrazone, studies were conducted to measure the response of direct-seeded carrot, lettuce, onion, spinach, and seeded tomato planted 3, 6, 9, and 12 mo after sulfentrazone application at 0, 112, 224, and 336 g ai ha−1. Eight plant-back studies were conducted during 2010–11 and 2012–13. Data collected were injury estimates, and stand and dry weights. Results indicate that it is safe to plant carrot and tomato 3 mo after sulfentrazone application at rates up to 336 g ai ha−1. Lettuce and green onion should not be planted within 9 mo of sulfentrazone application. Spinach should not be planted within 12 mo of sulfentrazone application.

Little information is available on the relative efficacy of Group 4 herbicides for glyphosate-resistant (GR) horseweed management in soybean. Five field research experiments were conducted in growers’ fields from 2020 to 2021 to determine GR horseweed control with Group 4 herbicides applied preplant (PP) alone and in a mixture. There was minimal soybean injury (≤4%) with herbicides evaluated. Dicamba, 2,4-D, or halauxifen-methyl applied PP controlled GR horseweed 92% to 96%, 73% to 76%, and 85% to 89%, respectively. The mixtures of dicamba + 2,4-D, dicamba + halauxifen-methyl and dicamba + 2,4-D + halauxifen-methyl provided 97% to 99% control of GR horseweed, similar to dicamba applied alone. The mixture of 2,4-D + halauxifen-methyl provided 93% to 94% control of GR horseweed. Dicamba + saflufenacil controlled GR horseweed at 98%. Dicamba alone, dicamba + 2,4-D ester, dicamba + halauxifen-methyl, and dicamba + 2,4-D ester + halauxifen-methyl decreased GR horseweed density 97%, 99%, 99%, and 98%, respectively, similar to a 98% density reduction with dicamba + saflufenacil. Other herbicide treatments had no effect on GR horseweed density. Dicamba, 2,4-D, and halauxifen-methyl applied PP decreased GR horseweed dry biomass by 99%, 76%, and 72%, respectively. The mixtures of dicamba + 2,4-D, dicamba + halauxifen-methyl, and dicamba + 2,4-D + halauxifen-methyl decreased GR horseweed dry biomass by 99% to 100%, similar to a 99% dry biomass reduction with dicamba + saflufenacil. The mixture of 2,4-D + halauxifen-methyl decreased GR horseweed dry biomass by 94%. Soybean yield was decreased by 61% when GR horseweed was left uncontrolled. Results show that Group 4 herbicides that include dicamba applied PP can be very effective in managing GR horseweed in soybean.

Hair fescue is a perennial grass weed in lowbush blueberry fields that forms dense sods and reduces yield. As a result of natural tolerance or resistance of this grass to other currently registered herbicides growers rely on preemergence (PRE) applications of pronamide and postemergence (POST) applications of the Group 2 herbicides foramsulfuron and nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron for hair fescue management. This causes repeated application of Group 2 herbicides, which is compounded by the recent registration of flazasulfuron for POST suppression of hair fescue in lowbush blueberry. Mixtures of Group 2 herbicides with the amino acid–inhibiting herbicides glyphosate (Group 9) and glufosinate (Group 10), however, can improve weed control and may delay herbicide resistance development. This research used a factorial arrangement of Group 2 herbicides (none, foramsulfuron [35 g ai ha−1], nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron [13 + 13 g ai ha−1], flazasulfuron [50 g ai ha−1]) and mixtures (none, with glyphosate [902 g ae ha−1], and with glufosinate [750 g ai ha−1]) to identify possible mixtures that improve weed control and delay resistance development. Herbicides were applied in spring nonbearing year, fall bearing year, and fall nonbearing year, with each application timing conducted as a separate experiment. Foramsulfuron and nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron were not effective as fall applications, and spring applications of these herbicides with glyphosate or glufosinate improved hair fescue suppression. Glyphosate and glufosinate were more effective as fall rather than spring applications. Flazasulfuron was effective across all application timings, although its mixture with glufosinate generally improved hair fescue suppression. Flazasulfuron + glufosinate is tentatively recommended as an effective mixture for management of spring nonbearing-year and fall bearing-year hair fescue in lowbush blueberry.

Commercialization of 2,4-D-resistant soybean varieties allows for postemergence (POST) applications of 2,4-D in soybean. With the increase in POST applications of 2,4-D in soybean, shifts in weed populations may occur. A long-term field trial was conducted over 7 yr in a corn-soybean rotation. Weed populations were subjected to four herbicide strategies with variable levels of 2,4-D reliance. The strategies used included 1) diversified glyphosate strategy with six herbicide sites of action (SOAs); 2) 2,4-D reliant strategy with three SOAs; 3) diversified 2,4-D reliant strategy with seven SOAs; and 4) fully diversified strategy with eight SOAs. Soil residual herbicides were used for both corn and soybean years, except for the 2,4-D-reliant strategy, which used only a residual herbicide during the corn years. A 52% or greater reduction in weed densities for all herbicide strategies, except the 2,4-D-reliant strategy, was observed by the end of the study. However, the density of weeds tolerant to 2,4-D, such as monocots, increased after 3 yr of selection pressure, and more than doubled after 5 yr of selection pressure in the 2,4-D-reliant strategy. Additionally, in the 2,4-D-reliant strategy with three SOAs, species richness was 30% higher in the soil seedbank compared to herbicides strategies with six or more SOAs. In order to delay weed shifts, diversified herbicide strategies with more than three SOAs that include residual herbicides should be used in corn:soybean rotational systems that use 2,4-D-resistant soybean.

Few herbicides are registered for goosegrass control in creeping bentgrass turfgrass. Topramezone controls goosegrass and is labeled for use on creeping bentgrass, but potential injury risks lead many turf managers to frequently apply it at a low-dose. This application practice increases the likelihood that topramezone treatments will be mixed with fungicide treatments. Previous research found that fungicides can reduce the activity of some herbicides, but their effects on topramezone efficacy are unknown. Four studies were established between Blacksburg, VA, and North Brunswick, NJ, in 2021 to determine whether chlorothalonil reduces goosegrass control from topramezone. In controlled environment dose-response studies the amount of topramezone needed to reduce goosegrass biomass by 50% increased from 3.04 g ha−1 to 5.27 g ha−1 when chlorothalonil (7,400 g ha−1) was added to the mixture. In field experiments, topramezone at 3.7 and 6.1 g ha−1 controlled goosegrass by 50% and 63%, respectively, at 42 d after treatment when averaged across herbicide admixtures. The addition of chlorothalonil alone and chlorothalonil plus acibenzolar-S-methyl to topramezone reduced goosegrass control from 73% to 52% and 45%, respectively, when averaged across topramezone rate. From these studies we can conclude that chlorothalonil has the potential to reduce goosegrass control when topramezone is applied at the maximum allowable rate (6 g ae ha−1) or less. This is the first report of fungicides acting to reduce herbicidal weed control efficacy in turfgrass systems.

Quizalofop-resistant rice allows for over-the-top applications of quizalofop, a herbicide that inhibits acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase. However, previous reports have indicated that quizalofop applied postemergence may cause significant injury to quizalofop-resistant rice. Therefore, field experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of quizalofop-resistant rice cultivars to quizalofop applications across different planting dates. Under controlled conditions, the effects of soil moisture content, air temperature, and light intensity on quizalofop-resistant rice sensitivity to quizalofop were investigated. In the planting date experiment, injury of more than 11 percentage points was observed on early-planted rice compared with late-planted rice at the 5-leaf stage, with higher injury observed under saturated soil conditions. However, quizalofop applications at the labeled rate caused ≤16% reduction in yield regardless of planting environment. Quizalofop-resistant cultivars exhibited more injury by at least 25 percentage points when soil was maintained at 90% or 100% of field capacity because rice cultivars ‘PVL01’, ‘PVL02’, and ‘RTv7231 MA’ exhibited ≥42%, 30%, and ≥54% injury, respectively, compared with ≤10%, ≤5%, and ≤22% injury, respectively, at 40% or 50% of field capacity, pooled over rating timing. Greater injury ranging from 18% to 31% was observed on quizalofop-resistant rice grown under low light intensity (600 µmol m−2s−1) compared with 5% to 14% injury under high light intensity (1,150 µmol m−2s−1). The injury persisted from 7 to 28 d after 5-leaf stage application (DAFT), averaged over quizalofop-resistant cultivars and air temperatures (20/15 C and 30/25 C day/night, respectively). At 7 DAFT, greater injury (by 5 to 21 percentage points) was observed on quizalofop-resistant cultivars; PVL01, PVL02, and RTv7231 MA exhibited 33%, 9%, and 58% injury, respectively, under 20/15 C temperature conditions compared with 13%, 4%, and 37% injury, respectively, under 30/25 C day/night conditions averaged over light intensities. Overall, quizalofop is likely to cause a greater risk for injury to quizalofop-resistant rice if it is applied under cool, cloudy, and moist soil conditions.

Trials were conducted in two experimental runs at the Purdue University Horticulture Greenhouses, West Lafayette, IN, to determine ‘Redefined Murray Mitcham’ peppermint tolerance to tiafenacil. Established peppermint in 20-cm-diameter polyethylene pots was subjected to a simulated harvest by removing aboveground biomass at the substrate surface; then, tiafenacil was applied at 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 g ai ha−1. Visible crop injury, height, and aboveground dry biomass data were subjected to regression analysis to generate predictive models. At 2 wk after treatment (WAT), peppermint injury increased from 63% to 86% and from 25% to 76% in Experimental Run 1 and 2, respectively, as tiafenacil rate increased from 25 to 200 g ha−1. At 4 WAT, injury increased from 0% to 63% and from 4% to 37% in Experimental Run 1 and 2, respectively, as tiafenacil rate increased from 25 to 200 g ha−1. By 7 WAT (both experimental runs), injury increased from 0% to 17% as tiafenacil rate increased from 25 to 200 g ha−1. At 4 WAT, height decreased from 23.0 to 8.6 cm and from 17.6 to 10.3 cm in Experimental Run 1 and 2, respectively, as tiafenacil rate increased from 0 to 200 g ha−1. At 7 WAT, height decreased from 28.1 to 21.4 cm as tiafenacil rate increased from 0 to 200 g ha−1. Aboveground dry weight of the nontreated check was 20.3 g pot−1 and decreased from 19.3 to 7.0 g pot−1 as tiafenacil rate increased from 25 to 200 g ha−1. Despite acute necrosis, injury from tiafenacil at lower rates was not persistent. The proposed 1X rate of tiafenacil for peppermint, 25 g ha−1, resulted in ≤4% injury 4 and 7 WAT and in only a 3% reduction in plant height and a 4.7% reduction in aboveground dry weight compared to the nontreated check.
