A field study was conducted in Mississippi to determine the effect of reduced dicamba rates on sweetpotato crop tolerance and storage root yield, simulating off-target movement or sprayer tank contamination. Treatments included a nontreated control and four rates of dicamba [70 g ae ha−1 (1/8×), 35 g ae ha−1 (1/16×), 8.65 g ae ha−1 (1/64×), and 1.09 g ae ha−1 (1/512×)] applied either 3 d before transplanting (DBP) or 1, 3, 5, or 7 wk after transplanting (WAP). An additional treatment consisted of 560 g ae ha−1 (1×) dicamba applied 3 DBP. Crop injury ratings were taken 1, 2, 3, and 4 wk after treatment (WAT). Across application timings, predicted sweetpotato plant injury 1, 2, 3, and 4 WAT increased from 3T to 22%, 3% to 32%, 2% to 58%, and 1% to 64% as dicamba rate increased from 0 to 70 g ha−1 (1/8×), respectively. As dicamba rate increased from 1/512× to 1/8×, predicted No. 1 yield decreased from 127% to 55%, 103% to 69%, 124% to 31%, and 124% to 41% of the nontreated control for applications made 1, 3, 5, and 7 WAP, respectively. Similarly, as dicamba rate increased from 1/512× to 1/8×, predicted marketable yield decreased from 123% to 57%, 107% to 77%, 121% to 44%, and 110% to 53% of the nontreated control for applications made 1, 3, 5, and 7 WAP, respectively. Dicamba residue (5.3 to 14.3 parts per billion) was detected in roots treated with 1/16× or 1/8× dicamba applied 5 or 7 WAP and 1/64× dicamba applied 7 WAP with the highest residue detected in roots harvested from sweetpotato plants treated at 7 WAP. Collectively, care should be taken to avoid sweetpotato exposure to dicamba especially at 1/8× and 1/16× rates during the growing season.

Citron melon is a monoecious and hairy annual vine commonly found in citrus orchards and cotton and peanut fields. There is limited information available on citron melon control with PRE- and POST-applied herbicides in Florida citrus. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of citron melon to 11 PRE and 18 POST herbicides under greenhouse conditions. Indaziflam applied PRE at 0.095 kg ai ha−1 resulted in 13% citron melon emergence at 14 d after treatment (DAT). The majority of PRE herbicides did not affect emergence at 14 DAT. Efficacy of PRE herbicides at 21 DAT resulted in > 90% control of citron melon with bromacil, premix formulation of bromacil + diuron, flumioxazin, indaziflam at 0.073 and 0.095, norflurazon, and simazine. Citron melon control was < 30% 21 DAT following PRE-applied diuron, oryzalin, and flazasulfuron. Control of citron melon varied by POST herbicides and growth stage. Regardless of citron melon growth stage, glyphosate, glufosinate, saflufenacil, paraquat, and flumioxazin provided > 90% at 7 and 14 DAT. Carfentrazone, flazasulfuron, imazapic, pyrithiobac-Na, rimsulfuron, trifloxysulfuron, and premix of 2,4-D + glyphosate controlled citron melon at least 90% when applied to two- to four-leaf plants. Control was reduced when application was delayed to the six- to eight-leaf stage. Bentazon and halosulfuron controlled citron melon 11 to 31% regardless of growth stage. Biomass of citron melon at 14 DAT was reduced > 50% in all herbicide treatments except with bentazon and halosulfuron applied at both stages, and dicamba, mesotrione, imazapic, and rimsulfuron applied to six- to eight-leaf citron melon. The results of this study indicate that citron melon can be adequately controlled with several PRE- or POST-applied herbicides; however, research is required to evaluate PRE followed by POST programs or their tank mixtures for season-long control of citron melon under field conditions.

Experiments were conducted to compare barnyardgrass control and rice injury and yield with emulsifiable concentrate and dry flowable formulations of propanil as single or repeat applications with crop oil concentrate, methylated seed oil, a blend of organosilicone surfactant and methylated seed oil or conventional nonionic surfactant, and organosilicone surfactant. Two applications of propanil were more effective in controlling barnyardgrass than a single application. The emulsifiable concentrate formulation of propanil controlled barnyardgrass more effectively than the dry flowable formulation in some but not all experiments. Differences in barnyardgrass control with propanil as influenced by adjuvants were minor and inconsistent. The most consistent barnyardgrass control and the highest rice yields were obtained with repeat applications of the emulsifiable concentrate formulation of propanil.

Various combinations of methods were evaluated for the control of ivyleaf morningglory growing in cotton. The combinations included chemicals incorporated to two depths or tanked-mixed as postemergence treatments and cultural methods that included in-row cultivation and hand weeding. The most effective combinations of methods included a herbicide such as cyanazine or prometryn in some treatments resulting in reduced ivyleaf morningglory population and improved cotton yields. Cultural methods without chemical assistance gave little or no control of ivyleaf morningglory based on weed populations and cotton yield. Statistically the best combinations had lint yields equal to the weed-free treatment, but the yields were reduced from 114 to 372 kg/ha. Also, most combination treatments had enough plant debris in the lint to reduce fiber grade.

Postemergence-applied diuron effectively controls yellow woodsorrel in nursery crops grown in pine bark–based container substrate. Whether the phytotoxicity of diuron on yellow woodsorrel is exclusively the result of foliar activity or is partially the result of root-based activity has not been determined. Application in which diuron was allowed to contact both the foliage and the pine bark–based substrate provided 84% control as determined by shoot fresh-weight reduction relative to that of a nontreated control. Foliar-only and root-only applications provided 52 and 12% shoot fresh-weight reduction, respectively. Absorption and translocation of foliar-applied diuron by yellow woodsorrel was evaluated using radiotracer techniques. After 24 h, 86% of the applied diuron had been absorbed, and 76% of the amount applied remained in the treated leaflet, indicating minimal translocation. Diuron sorption by the pine bark–based substrate was evaluated using radiotracer techniques. After 3 h, less than 6% of applied diuron remained in the aqueous phase, indicating 94% sorption. Exposing yellow woodsorrel roots to diuron concentrations as low as 0.50 mg/L resulted in injury, and concentrations equal to or greater than 10 mg/L resulted in death. Calculations described herein indicate the concentration that probably would occur within the aqueous solution held within the substrate following a 1.12-kg ai/ha application is sufficient to be phytotoxic to yellow woodsorrel. Thus, root-based absorption is a contributing factor in the overall efficacy of postemergence-applied diuron in controlling yellow woodsorrel.

The ability of the pesticide root zone model (PRZM) and the groundwater-loading effects of agricultural management systems (GLEAMS) model to predict movement of two herbicides in soil was evaluated using site-specific environmental data from sites in three states. Predictions of herbicide movement with site-specific data were compared to predictions using more generalized database soil and pesticide data within each model. Field experiments examined fluometuron and norflurazon movement in three soils representative of the cotton-growing regions of the southeastern United States. In comparing the use of site-specific vs. database values, the small increase in accuracy using site-specific inputs would not justify the large cost to obtain the data. The databases for each model gave predictions similar to those using the site-specific numbers. Both the PRZM and the GLEAMS model had similar accuracy levels in predicting the presence of fluometuron or norflurazon present in three surface soils, although each model tended to overpredict movement and total herbicide concentration, especially at lower herbicide concentrations. At higher herbicide concentrations, prediction accuracy was less than that probably needed to predict agronomically relevant herbicide concentrations in surface soils.

Field experiments were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to evaluate and adapt the Herbicide Application Decision Support System (HADSS®) program for Texas Southern High Plains cotton production. Weed management systems (in glyphosate-resistant, bromoxynil-resistant, and nontransgenic cotton varieties) included trifluralin preplant incorporated (PPI) followed by (fb) HADSS postemergence-topical (POST) recommendations (PPI fb POST HADSS), HADSS recommendations alone (POST HADSS), and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES) recommendations for the Texas Southern High Plains. In both years, effective season-long weed control was achieved with all weed management systems in the glyphosate-resistant variety, but only the PPI fb POST HADSS and TAES weed management systems controlled Palmer amaranth and devil's-claw in the bromoxynil-resistant and nontransgenic varieties, compared with POST HADSS alone. No differences in cotton lint yield or net returns over weed control costs were observed with weed management systems across variety in 1999; however, in general, the glyphosate-resistant and nontransgenic varieties produced higher yields and net returns than the bromoxynil-resistant variety. In 2000, plots from the TAES weed management system produced higher lint yields than the plots of PPI fb POST HADSS recommendations in the glyphosate- and bromoxynil-resistant varieties, but plots of all management systems yielded similarly in the nontransgenic variety. In 2000, plots from the TAES system produced the highest net returns in the glyphosate- and bromoxynil-resistant varieties. In the nontransgenic variety, the PPI fb POST HADSS and TAES weed management systems produced higher net returns over weed control costs than the POST HADSS system.

Three field trials were conducted in south Georgia under irrigated conditions in 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 to evaluate the effects of imazapic residues on oat growth and yield. Imazapic at 70 g ai/ha was applied during the first weeks of May, June, July, August, and September to bare soil. No additional tillage was performed after the herbicide application. Oats (cv. Coker 227) were planted the first week of October. Oat plant populations were not reduced by any timing of imazapic. Generally, oat plant heights and forage yields were reduced when imazapic was applied in August and September (1–2 mo before planting). Grain yields were not reduced by any timing of imazapic. Results of these tests suggest that the current 18-mo rotational restriction for oats following an application of imazapic could be reduced to 4 mo.

Kalmia angustifolia is a problematic understory shrub in boreal forests of eastern Canada. In this article, we discuss the nature of its interference with conifer regeneration, and control measures using herbicides. Although laboratory studies suggest the leaching of water-soluble phenolic compounds from Kalmia, allelopathic interference cannot be invoked as a cause of conifer regeneration failure because of lack of field evidences. Because of severe inhibitory effects of Kalmia on conifer growth and its role in long-term habitat degradation, the development of strategies for Kalmia management is a priority research area. Neither prescribed burning, plowing, scarification, nor 2,4-D application was proven effective in Kalmia control. Two studies were carried out using transplanted Kalmia to determine the efficacy of several herbicides and a herbicide plus burning treatment to control Kalmia. In one experiment, eight treatments were applied. They were control, glyphosate (3.36 kg/ha), glyphosate (2.88 kg/ha) plus surfactant Tween 20 (0.2%), glyphosate (2.88 kg/ha) plus surfactant Triton XR (0.2%), fosamine ammonium (5.38 kg/ha), triclopyr (4 kg/ha), hexazinone (2.2 kg/ha), and hexazinone (5 kg/ha). Triclopyr (4 kg/ha) provided the best control with significant reduction in the number and dry weight of sprouts, rhizomes, and current-year foliage of Kalmia compared with control. In another experiment, triclopyr (4 kg/ha), hexazinone (5 kg/ha), and hexazinone (2.2 kg/ha) plus burning treatments were applied. To determine the response of black spruce seedlings to the herbicide treatments, black spruce seedlings were planted in all the Kalmia pots except the ones that received the hexazinone (2.2 kg/ha) plus burning treatment. Triclopyr (4 kg/ha) caused the maximum damage to Kalmia, affecting all the above- and below-ground components of the plant. We recommend that an experimental field trial be established using triclopyr to test its efficacy for Kalmia control under field conditions.

Diagnosis of herbicide injury can be complex because of the large number and interaction of factors leading to herbicide injury. Computer-based expert systems have great potential to assist users, particularly nonexperts, in accurate diagnosis of herbicide injury. Rule-based and case-based reasoning are the most widely used forms of expert systems, and each system has strengths and limitations. Approaches that integrate rule-based and case-based reasoning may augment the positive aspects of the two reasoning methods and simultaneously minimize their negative aspects. The Herbicide Injury Diagnostic Expert System (HIDES) integrates rule-based and case-based reasoning and uses field-specific information, injury symptoms, herbicide use history, and herbicide information to diagnose crop injury from herbicides. The HIDES program uses a set of rules to identify suspect herbicide(s) that is the candidate for causing the observed injury and possible sources of the suspect herbicide(s). Case-based reasoning is used to propose a probable cause of injury by making an analogy to previously solved cases. A four-step procedure is followed when using HIDES: information collection, suspect herbicide identification, suspect herbicide source determination, injury reason suggestion, and knowledge accumulation.

Research was conducted to evaluate absorption, translocation, and metabolism of foliar-applied trifloxysulfuron in flue-cured tobacco. The majority of 14C-trifloxysulfuron was absorbed by 4 h, with an accumulation in the plant of 43% of the radioactivity after 72 h. Translocation of radioactivity did not significantly differ between harvest timings of 4 to 72 h after treatment. Not more than 4% of applied 14C-trifloxysulfuron moved out of the treated leaves of tobacco, whereas less than 1.9% accumulated in any one part. Tobacco metabolized 14C-trifloxysulfuron rapidly, with 60.9% of the absorbed herbicide remaining in the parent herbicide form 4 h after treatment, whereas only 12.1% remained after 72 h. These data suggest that limited absorption and translocation, as well as rapid metabolism, are the basis for tobacco tolerance to foliar-applied trifloxysulfuron and illustrate the potential safe and effective use of trifloxysulfuron in tobacco for POST weed control.

Effects and interactions of two soil temperatures, 19 ± 1 and 27 ± 3 C, and seven soil-applied herbicide treatments on the morphological development and concentrations of eight essential nutrients in leaves, stems, and roots of pinto beans were determined. Soil temperature did not affect overall plant morphology but did affect some nutrient concentrations in the roots, stems, and leaves. Combinations of alachlor plus trifluralin at 2.2 plus 0.28 kg ai/ha and EPTC plus trifluralin at 2.2 plus 0.28 kg ai/ha caused greater negative effects than when the herbicides were applied separately. Oryzalin at 0.56 kg ai/ha and EPTC at 3.4 kg ai/ha induced the least number of morphological effects, while alachlor at 3.4 kg ai/ha, chloramben at 2.2 kg ai/ha, and trifluralin applied at 0.56 kg ai/ha produced an intermediate number. Alachlor, trifluralin, and combinations of alachlor plus trifluralin and EPTC plus trifluralin inhibited nodule growth. Each herbicide affected different nutrients. Alachlor plus trifluralin affected the level of each nutrient in at least one plant tissue. Many herbicide-soil temperature interactions occurred.

In field studies conducted over two years, soybean cultivars ‘Deltapine 415’, ‘Forrest’, ‘Asgrow 6785’, ‘Centennial’, 'Sharkey’, ‘Terra Vig 616’, ‘Hartz 6686’, and ‘Pioneer 9791’ responded similarly to POST application of AC 263,222. With supplemental overhead irrigation of 5.1 cm weekly for 4 wk initiated 21 d after herbicide applications, mature soybean height for the cultivars averaged 18% less than that of the untreated check for 27 g/ha AC 263,222, but only 8% less when not irrigated. Although nonirrigated soybean seed yield following AC 263,222 application the first year was not reduced compared with the untreated check, with irrigation seed yield reductions of 12 and 32% were noted for 13 and 27 g/ha AC 263,222, respectively. Seed yield the second year was not negatively affected with herbicide application whether soybean was irrigated or not irrigated. For individual years, seed yield for the untreated irrigated and nonirrigated checks was similar. In the first year soybean yield following AC 263,222 at 13 and 27 g/ha with irrigation was 16 and 30% lower, respectively, than when soybean was not irrigated. Decreases in soybean 100-seed weight accompanied the yield reductions.

To date, there have been no reports of Dalmatian toadflax serving as a host for cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Infestations of Dalmatian toadflax may serve as a reservoir of CMV, thereby facilitating aphid transmission of CMV to both agricultural crops and native plants. The goal of this study was to determine whether Dalmatian toadflax is a host for CMV. Dalmatian toadflax seedlings were randomly assigned to two treatments (18 replicates/treatment): no inoculation (control) and inoculation with CMV (Fast New York strain). The Dalmatian toadflax seedlings were inoculated by standard mechanical methods and tested for the presence of CMV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Ten of the 18 CMV-inoculated toadflax plants tested positive for the virus; 6 of the 18 displayed systemic mosaic chlorosis and leaf curling. All control plants tested negative. Transmission electron microscopy obtained from CMV-positive plants confirmed the presence of CMV based on physical properties. To verify CMV infestation, tobacco plants were assigned to the following treatments (six replicates/treatment): no inoculation (control), CMV-negative (control) inoculation, and a CMV-positive inoculation. Plants were inoculated by standard methods. Five of the 6 tobacco plants treated with the CMV-positive inoculum tested positive for CMV using ELISA. All control plants tested negative for the virus.

Field experiments were conducted in 1998, 1999, and 2000 at two locations (Harrow and Ridgetown) in southwestern Ontario to determine the biologically effective rates (I90) of a commercial formulation of flufenacet plus metribuzin for weed control and processing tomato tolerance. At the proposed label use rate, flufenacet plus metribuzin provided excellent (≥90%) early-season (22 to 29 d after planting) control of velvetleaf, good (80 to 89%) control of barnyardgrass and redroot pigweed, and fair (60 to 79%) control of common lambsquarters. Flufenacet plus metribuzin provided fair late-season (59 to 97 d after planting) control of redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters and poor (≤59%) control of barnyardgrass and velvetleaf. At Harrow and Ridgetown, I90 values for early-season weed control ranged from 70 to 1,300 g ai/ha and 50 to 1,900 g ai/ha, respectively. Flufenacet plus metribuzin provided poor weed control at Ridgetown. This result was not attributable to higher weed density or particular weed species but may have been caused by lack of rainfall and too low application rates for the medium-textured soil type. It is estimated that flufenacet plus metribuzin at 1,400 g/ha can control green foxtail season-long, whereas barnyardgrass and common lambsquarters would require 1,900 g/ha. Season-long control of velvetleaf and redroot pigweed would require application rates of 3,200 and 7,100 g/ha, respectively. Only slight early-season crop injury was observed, which was not reflected in yields. Optimum yields of tomatoes were obtained at Harrow at rates lower or slightly higher than the registered rates for corn and soybean. Tomato yields were higher at Harrow than at Ridgetown, which may have been due to differences in soil texture. Tomatoes grown in a medium-textured (Ridgetown) soil appeared to be less competitive against weeds than those grown in a coarse-textured soil (Harrow).

Residents in Stillwater County, MT, used a weed bounty program as an educational tool to promote awareness, detection, and control of spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa Lam. # CENMA) on range and noncropland. Many people became involved with the weed control effort, weed awareness was increased, spotted knapweed was controlled, and the program was cost effective. The success of a weed bounty program is influenced by 1) the enthusiasm and innovations of the county extension agent, weed supervisor, or other key individual or group in the community; 2) the choice of the weeds selected; and 3) good media coverage of the bounty program. With proper planning and organization, weed bounty programs effectively promote awareness and action in other areas of public concern.

A group of scientists from academia, government, and industry, along with ecologists, regulators, conservationists, and grower representatives have formed an International Organization for Resistant Pest Management (IOPRM) to review and delineate proactive and retroactive management strategies for specific cases of pesticide resistance. Within IOPRM, technical working groups were appointed to deal with each pest group. The Weed Resistance Management Working Group (WRMWG) is chaired by Drs. Jonathan Gressel and Leonard Saari, and will deal with the analysis and promoting of alternative control strategies for case studies where a high risk of herbicide resistant weeds exists. Based on our experience to date, crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans and weeds such as kochia, annual ryegrass and blackgrass, will be used as models to develop optimum weed resistance management programs. The group is especially looking for herbicide and weed control data on negative-cross resistance, econometric models, novel management procedures, and quantitative data from weed scientists and other research and extension communities that could facilitate reaching optimal management decisions. All recommendations and experiences will be communicated through a worldwide network.

In 1998, 1,260 soil samples were collected from 63 of 99 Iowa counties to characterize the weed seedbanks in fields under the conservation reserve program (CRP) and adjacent fields under continuous cultivation. Five annual grass and 13 broadleaf weed species were identified in both the CRP and adjacent cultivated fields. Seedbank differences between CRP and adjacent cultivated fields were evident only for foxtails, common lambsquarters, pigweeds, and sweetclover, with the average of 3,288, 10,681, 38, and 1,709 seeds/m2, respectively; the corresponding seed population in adjacent CRP fields was 59, 57, 1,924, and 74%, respectively. However, weed species diversity was not significantly different between fields in CRP and continuous cultivation. Only CRP fields in the northwest Iowa crop-reporting district had a higher foxtail species seed population (4,915 seeds/m2) than the adjacent cultivated fields (1,782 seeds/m2). Land under CRP in northern (N), eastern, and southern (S) districts had 58% (4,158 seeds/m2), 6% (312 seeds/m2), and 18% (594 seeds/m2) of the continuously cultivated foxtail species seedbank. Common lambsquarters seed populations were 4,128 and 3,801 seeds/m2 in the cultivated fields of the N and central (C) districts, compared with 772 and 252 seeds/m2 in adjacent CRP fields, respectively. Pigweed species seeds were more numerous in the cultivated fields than in adjacent CRP fields in the northeast, C, and S Iowa districts. Sweetclover seed population was consistently higher in CRP land because it was included as part of the CRP covers seeding. Overall, broadleaf weed seeds comprised 90% of the seedbanks in both CRP and adjacent cultivated land. A competitive cover crop canopy in CRP probably reduced weed seedbanks by suppression of weeds and seed production. Also, annual seed production, differences in weed biology, and differential herbicide performance in cultivated fields may have contributed to higher seed populations.

Mortality of potted huisache seedlings averaged 87 to 100% 18 weeks after picloram or clopyralid was applied with a model carpeted roller at concentrations as low as 7.5 g ae/L. A 1:1 mixture of picloram and clopyralid was equally effective. Triclopyr was effective only when applied to small seedlings in the spring, and an ester was more effective than an amine formulation. A 1:1 mixture of clopyralid and triclopyr ester was intermediate in effectiveness between the two herbicides applied alone. Adding surfactant increased canopy reduction and plant mortality (P = 0.1 to 0.01), especially at lower herbicide concentrations.
