Gravitational lensing can magnify a distant source, revealing structural detail which is normally unresolvable. Recovering this detail through an inversion of the influence of gravitational lensing, however, requires optimisation of not only lens parameters, but also of the surface brightness distribution of the source. This paper outlines a new approach to this inversion, utilising genetic algorithms to reconstruct the source profile. In this initial study, the effects of image degradation due to instrumental and atmospheric effects are neglected and it is assumed that the lens model is accurately known, but the genetic algorithm approach can be incorporated into more general optimisation techniques, allowing the optimisation of both the parameters for a lensing model and the surface brightness of the source.

Getting a better understanding of the evolution and nucleosynthetic yields of the most metal-poor stars (Z ≲ 10−5) is critical because they are part of the big picture of the history of the primitive universe. Yet many of the remaining unknowns of stellar evolution lie in the birth, life, and death of these objects. We review stellar evolution of intermediate-mass Z ≤ 10−5 models existing in the literature, with a particular focus on the problem of their final fates. We emphasise the importance of the mixing episodes between the stellar envelope and the nuclearly processed core, which occur after stars exhaust their central He (second dredge-up and dredge-out episodes). The depth and efficiency of these episodes are critical to determine the mass limits for the formation of electron-capture SNe. Our knowledge of these phenomena is not complete because they are strongly affected by the choice of input physics. These uncertainties affect stars in all mass and metallicity ranges. However, difficulties in calibration pose additional challenges in the case of the most metal-poor stars. We also consider the alternative SN I1/2 channel to form SNe out of the most metal-poor intermediate-mass objects. In this case, it is critical to understand the thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch evolution until the late stages. Efficient second dredge-up and, later, third dredge-up episodes could be able to pollute stellar envelopes enough for the stars to undergo thermal pulses in a way very similar to that of higher initial Z objects. Inefficient second and/or third dredge-up may leave an almost pristine envelope, unable to sustain strong stellar winds. This may allow the H-exhausted core to grow to the Chandrasekhar mass before the envelope is completely lost, and thus let the star explode as an SN I1/2. After reviewing the information available on these two possible channels for the formation of SNe, we discuss existing nucleosynthetic yields of stars of metallicity Z ≤ 10−5 and present an example of nucleosynthetic calculations for a thermally pulsing Super-Asymptotic Giant Branch star of Z = 10−5. We compare theoretical predictions with observations of the lowest [Fe/H] objects detected. The review closes by discussing current open questions as well as possible fruitful avenues for future research.

We have obtained HST/STIS long slit spectroscopy of the aligned emission line nebulae in three compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources — 3C 67, 3C 277.1, and 3C 303.1. We find systematic offsets (˜300–500 kms) of the emission line velocities on one or both sides of the radio sources. We also see evidence for broad lines (FWHM ˜500 kms) and complex emission line profiles. In 3C 303.1 the data are consistent with multiple components and possibly split lines. The amplitude of the velocity variations is not so large as to exclude gravitationally-induced motions. However, the complex kinematics, the lack of a signature of Keplerian rotation, and the association of the velocity variations with the radio lobes are consistent with the observed ˜300–500 kms velocities being driven by the expansion of the radio source. Acceleration of the clouds by the bow shock is plausible given the estimated densities in the clouds and the velocities observed in the much smaller compact symmetric objects and with expansion velocities estimated from spectral ageing. This conclusion is unchanged if we consider the scenario in which the cloud acceleration is dominated by the post bow shock flow.

Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs) represent a relatively new class of pulsar, primarily characterised by their sporadic bursting emission of single pulses on time scales of minutes to hours. In addition to the difficulty involved in detecting these objects, low-frequency ( $ \lt 300\,\text{MHz}$ ) observations of RRATs are sparse, which makes understanding their broadband emission properties in the context of the normal pulsar population problematic. Here, we present the simultaneous detection of RRAT J2325−0530 using the Murchison Widefield Array (154 MHz) and Parkes radio telescope ( $1.4\,\text{GHz}$ ). On a single-pulse basis, we produce the first polarimetric profile of this pulsar, measure the spectral index ( $\alpha={-2.2\pm 0.1}$ ), pulse energy distributions, and present the pulse rates in the context of detections in previous epochs. We find that the distribution of time between subsequent pulses is consistent with a Poisson process and find no evidence of clustering over the $\sim\!1.5\,\text{h}$ observations. Finally, we are able to quantify the scintillation properties of RRAT J2325−0530 at 1.4 GHz, where the single pulses are modulated substantially across the observing bandwidth, and show that this characterisation is feasible even with irregular time sampling as a consequence of the sporadic emission behaviour.

The HI content of Hickson Compact Groups in the southern hemisphere is measured using data from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), and dedicated observations using the narrow band filter on the Multibeam instrument on the Parkes telescope. The expected HI mass of these groups was estimated using the luminosity, diameter, and morphological types of the member galaxies, calibrated from published data. Taking careful account of non-detection limits, the results show that the compact group population that has been detected by these observations has an HI content similar to that of galaxies in the reference field sample. The upper limits for the undetected groups lie within the normal range; improvement of these limits will require a large increase in sensitivity.

We summarise the HI properties of early-type galaxies, in particular the differences in HI morphologies observed in early-type galaxies of different luminosities. We find that in low-luminosity early-type galaxies the HI is almost always in a disk-like structure, with central surface densities high enough for star formation to occur. In a few luminous early-type galaxies the HI is also in a disk or in a ring-like structure, but in most luminous early-type galaxies the HI has a relatively irregular morphology. The surface densities in the HI disks in luminous early-type galaxies are lower than in the HI disks in low-luminosity early-type galaxies and no large-scale star formation should occur in these disks. We discuss these different HI characteristics in the context of other properties of early-type galaxies that correlate with luminosity.

We propose that observations of ‘hidden’ magnetars in central compact objects can be used to probe crustal activity of neutron stars with large internal magnetic fields. Estimates based on calculations by Perna & Pons, Pons & Rea and Kaminker et al. suggest that central compact objects, which are proposed to be ‘hidden’ magnetars, must demonstrate flux variations on the time scale of months–years. However, the most prominent candidate for the ‘hidden’ magnetars — CXO J1852.6+0040 in Kes 79 — shows constant (within error bars) flux. This can be interpreted by lower variable crustal activity than in typical magnetars. Alternatively, CXO J1852.6+0040 can be in a high state of variable activity during the whole period of observations. Then we consider the source 1E161348 − 5055 in RCW103 as another candidate. Employing a simple 2D-modelling we argue that properties of the source can be explained by the crustal activity of the magnetar type. Thus, this object may be supplemented for the three known candidates for the ‘hidden’ magnetars among central compact objects discussed in literature.

Robert Innes was one of a select band of amateur astronomers who made the transition to professional ranks towards the end of the nineteenth century. Initially he had a passion for mathematical astronomy, but after settling in Sydney he developed a taste for observational astronomy, specialising in the search for new double stars. He quickly became known for his success in this field and for his publications on solar system perturbations, and with John Tebbutt's patronage managed to secure a clerical position at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope. Once there he continued to observe in his spare time and to publish, and, with strong support from Sir David Gill, was appointed founding Director of the Transvaal Observatory. By the time he died in 1933, Innes had received an honorary D.Sc. from Leiden University, and had established an international reputation as a positional astronomer.This paper provides an interesting case study of a well-known ‘amateur-turned-professional’, and an example of the ways in which patronage played a key role in nineteenth and early twentieth century Australian and South African astronomy.

We consider the shock structures that can arise in blazar jets as a consequence of variations in the jet flow velocity. There are two possible cases: (1) a double shock system consisting of both a forward and reverse shock, and (2) a single shock (either forward or reverse) together with a rarefaction wave. These possibilities depend upon the relative velocity of the two different sections of jet. Using previously calculated spherical models for estimates of the magnetic field and electron number density of the emission region in the TeV blazar Mkn 501, we show that this region is in the form of a thin disk in the plasma rest frame. It is possible to reconcile spectral and pair opacity constraints for Mkn 501 for Doppler factors in the range of 10–20. This is easiest if the corrections for TeV absorption by the infrared background are not as large as implied by recent models.

We describe the specifications, characteristics, calibration, and analysis of data from the University of New South Wales Infrared Fabry–Perot (UNSWIRF) etalon. UNSWIRF is a near-infrared tunable imaging spectrometer, used primarily in conjunction with IRIS on the AAT, but suitable for use as a visitor instrument at other telescopes. The etalon delivers a resolving power in excess of 4000 (corresponding to a velocity resolution ∼75 km s−1), and allows imaging of fields up to 100″ in diameter on the AAT at any wavelength between 1·5 and 2·4 μm for which suitable blocking filters are available.

In past decades a lot of progress has been made towards understanding the main s-process component that takes place in thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. During this process about half of the heavy elements, mainly between 90 ≤ A ≤ 209 are synthesized. Improvements were made in stellar modeling as well as in measuring relevant nuclear data for a better description of the main s process. The weak s process, which contributes to the production of lighter nuclei in the mass range 56 ≤ A ≤ 90 operates in massive stars (M ≥ 8 M⊙) and is much less understood. A better characterization of the weak s component would help disentangle the various contributions to element production in this region. For this purpose, a series of measurements of neutron-capture cross sections have been performed on medium-mass nuclei at the 3.7-MV Van de Graaff accelerator at FZK using the activation method. Also, neutron captures on abundant light elements with A < 56 play an important role for s-process nucleosynthesis, since they act as neutron poisons and affect the stellar neutron balance. New results are presented for the (n, γ) cross sections of 41K and 45Sc, and revisions are reported for a number of cross sections based on improved spectroscopic information.

A high-resolution image of the strong extragalactic source 1343–601 has been made with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) at 843 MHz. The source is identified with a 10 mag galaxy (Mv = −24) which is heavily obscured through our Galaxy. A recent redshift (z = 0.01215) gives a distance of 73 Mpc and a corresponding radio luminosity of log P843 = 24.9.

The MOST image shows a core linked by a double jet to asymmetric lobes which are surrounded by a confined balloon (400 × 200 kpc2) of low-brightness plasma. This has a complex network of ridges or flows which lead out into the wider cluster medium. If similar balloons exist around other double sources, they could provide the depolarising medium required by the Laing-Garrington effect.

Separate observations show the core is compact with strong X-ray emission.

The reasons for re-surveying the neutral hydrogen in the Small Magellanic Cloud and the results from that survey are briefly discussed in our previous paper (McGee and Newton 1982 — Paper I). We now present the experimental details, the 489 observed line profiles and details of the Gaussian analysis of each one. The profiles here are from the ‘main body’ of the SMC. Those of the ‘bridge region’ between the two Clouds of Magellan will form the basis of a later paper.

Type II solar bursts characteristically drift slowly from high to low frequencies at a rate of about 0.1 MHz/s, appear only at frequencies lower than 250 MHz, and frequently have harmonic structure, i.e. there are identifiable spectral features within the fundamental which are duplicated at twice the frequency. Thus it is clear that at least in some cases, true harmonic radiation is involved; the source region emits frequencies f and 2f simultaneously.

The study of both neutral and ionised gas in young radio sources is providing key information on the effect the radio plasma has on the ISM of these objects. We present results obtained for the compact radio sources PKS 1549–79, 4C 12.50 and PKS 1814–63 and for the intermediate-size radio galaxy 3C 459. At least in the first two, low ionisation optical emission lines and HI absorption appear to be associated with the extended, but relatively quiescent, dusty cocoon surrounding the nucleus. The [OIII] lines are, on the other hand, mostly associated with the region of interaction between the radio plasma and the ISM, indicating a fast outflow from the centre. A case of fast outflow (up to ∼1000 km s-1) is also observed in HI in the radio source 4C 12.50. As the radio source evolves, any obscuring material along the radio axis is swept aside until, eventually, cavities (of the same kind as observed e.g. in Cygnus A) are hollowed out on either side of the nucleus. We may witness this phase in the evolution of a radio source in the radio galaxy 3C 459.

The parameters of a new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) mosaic of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen are described. A preliminary peak-brightness-temperature image of the whole of the LMC, and a detailed image of the region around the supergiant shells LMC 4 and 5 is shown.

Most supernova remnants (SNRs) show a ring-shaped radio intensity distribution which is interpreted as the projection of an approximately spherical shell of emission. However, in many cases the ring is neither circular nor complete; in this empirical investigation a major factor responsible for asymmetry is identified and the implications of this discovery are explored.

To make a power spectrum (PS) detection of the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), one must avoid/subtract bright foreground sources. Sources such as Fornax A present a modelling challenge due to spatial structures spanning from arc seconds up to a degree. We compare modelling with multi-scale (MS) CLEAN components to ‘shapelets’, an alternative set of basis functions. We introduce a new image-based shapelet modelling package, SHAMFI. We also introduce a new CUDA simulation code (WODEN) to generate point source, Gaussian, and shapelet components into visibilities. We test performance by modelling a simulation of Fornax A, peeling the model from simulated visibilities, and producing a residual PS. We find the shapelet method consistently subtracts large-angular-scale emission well, even when the angular resolution of the data is changed. We find that when increasing the angular resolution of the data, the MS CLEAN model worsens at large angular scales. When testing on real Murchison Widefield Array data, the expected improvement is not seen in real data because of the other dominating systematics still present. Through further simulation, we find the expected differences to be lower than obtainable through current processing pipelines. We conclude shapelets are worthwhile for subtracting extended galaxies, and may prove essential for an EoR detection in the future, once other systematics have been addressed.

The standard formula for the resolving power R(= λ/Δλ) of an astronomical grating spectrograph is Here L is the linear size of the grating, perpendicular to the direction of the grooves, θB is the blaze angle of the grating, θS is the angular size of the slit, projected back on to the sky, and D is the diameter of the telescope objective. The formula is valid for gratings used in the Littrow condition, when the angle of incidence α, and the angle of diffraction β, are both close to θB.

On 1975 August 22 an outburst above the west limb of the Sun was observed with the Culgoora radioheliograph at 43, 80 and 160 MHz. The first stages of the event included intense type III/V bursts followed by a type II burst with multiple, fundamental and harmonic bands and herringbone structure. While the type II burst was still in progress a moving type IV burst appeared. It was eventually observed out to a distance of more than 3 R⊙. This was the first moving type IV burst observed with the two-dimensional radioheliograph operating at three frequencies; as such it provides valuable constraints on models of moving type IV sources.
