The β Cep variables are characterised by light variations of a few per cent and velocity variations of up to a few tens of km/s over periods of from about 2.5 to 7 hours. Spectral types range from BO to B2 and luminosity classes from IV to II-III, corresponding to masses from 8 to 18 M ⊙. The light and velocity curves are 90° out of phase, so that maximum light (and also maximum temperature) occur at minimum radius.

At previous meetings of the A.S.A., brief reports have been made of a new theory for the formation of the solar system which is being developed at Monash University (Prentice 1972, 1977, 1978a, b; Hourigan 1977). This work is nearing completion and on this occasion an outline of the whole theory is presented.

One of the important discoveries of the present century is that the Universe expands. Two important parameters which define the dynamics of the Universe and can be obtained at the telescope are the rate of expansion zhqо, and change of this rate with time qо, It is difficult to derive a value for Hо because accurate distances of farther galaxies are needed. This involves identifying the luminous objects, such as brightest stars, HII regions, globular cluster, supernova etc., in the Local Group galaxies as well as in the external galaxies. Once the absolute magnitudes of these objects are calibrated with the known distances of the Local Group galaxies, distances to the external galaxies can be derived.

Since the discovery of variable circular and linear polarisation in VV Puppis (Tapia 1977), several investigators have observed the system. The new observations particularly of polarisation (Liebert et al. 1978, Liebert and Stockman 1979 have ruled out the standard dwarf nova (accretion disc — hot spot) model previously used to interpret the light curve of VV Puppis.

The Thumbprint Nebula (TPN) in Chamaeleon (first described by Fitzgerald (1974), and shown in Figure 1) is a good example of the class of dense, dark nebulae that exhibit dark cores and bright rims, and have been referred to (Lynds 1967) as ‘bright dark nebulae’. Early observations of these nebulae established that the dust grains within them were strongly forward-scattering (Struve and Elvey 1936, Struve 1937). However, the treatment of the radiative transfer problem was too inadequate to permit more than tentative conclusions regarding the nebulae. In more recent years, with the advent of modern computers, the transfer of radiation through a dust cloud has been treated more rigorously, using Monte Carlo techniques (Mattila 1970, Witt and Stephens 1974). Witt and Stephens (1974) have demonstrated that for a dense nebula the surface brightness profile is sensitive to the dust grain density distribution within the cloud and to the scattering properties of the grains. The scattering model approach can be valuable in the investigation of very opaque dark nebulae that cannot be studied by conventional star counting techniques. This has been demonstrated in the case of the TPN by Fitzgerald et al (1976), who used the Witt and Stephens model.

About 20 years ago de Vaucouleurs (1955, 1960) drew attention to faint but extensive nebulosity in the region of the South Celestial Pole. He tentatively identified it as being emission nebulosity, excited by OB stars in the overlying galactic plane. The extent of these nebulae has become even more apparent in recent years on IIIa-J plates taken for the U.K. Schmidt survey of the southern sky. From a study of survey plates covering the sky south of declination 80° a map has been prepared of the nebulosity visible in the region. A study made of this ∽nebulosity suggests that it is predominantly reflection nebulosity, with the main source of illumination being integrated starlight of the overlying Carina spiral arm. The bulk of it is of very low surface brightness (fainter than about 26 mag. per square arcsec) and appears to be in the form of a broken layer underlying the local galactic plane at an altitude of ∽ 40–80 pc. There are a number of brighter nebulous patches and filaments, frequently highly structured on a scale of minutes of arc, and extending across several degrees, usually parallel to the galactic plane.

The spectrophotometric results from the Copernicus satellite have stimulated considerable interest in interstellar molecular hydrogen. In this note calculations are presented which suggest that it may be possible for hydrogen molecules on grains to give rise to diffuse interstellar lines in the ultraviolet.

Microwave line investigations have shown that several bright southern galaxies contain dense molecular clouds overlying bright radio nuclei (see e.g. Whiteoak 1978). In terms of general kinematic models of galaxies the clouds have velocities that are anomalous, being consistent with radial motions both towards and away from the nucleus. To extend our knowledge of these motions we are investigating the distribution of optical spectral lines near the nuclei of the galaxies. We present here preliminary results for NGC 4945 and 5128.

A 3 GHz maser from the Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden, is currently at Parkes on a long-term loan basis. So far, it has been used on the 64-m radio telescope for a two-week period of spectral-line observations in February 1979, providing a system sensitivity far superior to that previously available at the same frequency. The observed lines were the ground-state transitions of CH at 3264, 3335 and 3349 MHz, the 211 – 212 transition of H2CS at 3139 MHz, and the 211-212 transition of CH3CHO at 3195 MHz.

The Chatterton Astronomy Department of Sydney University, in collaboration with the Astronomy Group of Imperial College (London), has carried out a program of speckle interferometry on the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Over 2 km of film were exposed during the two observing sessions in November and December, 1978, and the analysis of this very large amount of data is being carried out at the present time.

Studies of solar absorption line profiles obtained at high spatial and spectral resolution have usually been content to extract one parameter (the frequency shift in the core of the line) from each profile to describe the velocity field. However, attempts have been made to obtain the variation of velocity with depth in the solar atmosphere either by simultaneous observation of the frequency shift in the cores of several lines with different excitation potentials or by measuring the bisector-shift in a single line profile as described by Kulander and Jefferies (1966). In the first method it is necessary to assign a depth of formation to the core of each line used while in the second method a depth of formation has to be assigned to each point in the line profile. Parnell and Beckers (1969) have discussed the problems involved in assigning a depth on formation and in particular they have shown that when a velocity field is present the concept of depth of formation is dependent of the velocity field. In this contribution we describe a method of determining the velocity field from a single line profile which does not suffer from the problems associated with methods based on the concept of depth of formation.

The coefficient of atmospheric extinction may change during the night and in fact it often does. This has an adverse effect on the determination of atmospheric extinction by simple Bouguer plot of magnitude against air mass. This effect was studied by Rufener (1964), who introduced for the purpose of accurate photoelectric photometry in the Geneva photometric system the method of two ‘extinction stars’. His method consists of the measurement of two stars of the same colour — one starting at high air mass 2 - 3, the M-star (for French montante = rising) and the second starting simultaneously in the meridian at low air mass, the D—star (for descending).

The discovery of pulsars in 1967 marked the watershed of interest in short-time-scale phenomena in radio astronomy. Ionospheric scintillation on time scales of seconds, interplanetary scintillations at tenths of seconds and solar bursts of similar duration had already been studied. But with pulsars individual pulses contained subpulses of width about 10 ms, and later observations of microstructure were to show that structure with scales of 10—100 μs were present. In other areas searches for the 10—100 ms radio pulses expected to accompany the gravitational wave events resulting from stellar collapses were made, and more recently searches have been made for the radio pulse accompanying the explosion of small black holes (Rees 1977). Work in this area is summarized by O’Sullivan et al. (1978) and Phinney and Taylor (1979).

Interesting observations have been made possible by the success of the acousto-optical radio spectrograph, a unique form of multi-channel filter type of spectral receiver whose channel outputs ian be sampled at high rates by a computer. Three spectrographs are available at the Division of Radiophysics. Two divide a 100 MHz spectral range into 512 channels and are normally dedicated to spectral-line work (Cole and Milne 1977) and solar work (Cole et al. 1978). The Parkes observations reported here use a more compact spectrograph, which gives increased performance — up to 270 MHz can be studied, divided into 256 frequency channels. The light deflector of this spectrograph was kindly supplied by Itek Corporation.

The completion of the Uhuru (Forman et al. 1978) and Ariel V (Cooke et al. 1978) surveys of the sky for X-ray emission has resulted in many proposed identifications with individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The X-ray positions are not usually accurate enough to enable a positive identification to be made of the X-ray sources with optical or radio objects, and hence the identification is often based on statistical arguments — viz., the unexpected occurrence of unusual galaxies, radio sources or clusters of galaxies within or near the X-ray error boxes. There is usually no significant information available on the angular size of the X-ray emitter but in two or three cases (e.g. Perseus cluster, Coma cluster and Virgo cluster) the angular resolution is good enough to identify a broad component with dimensions approaching those of the whole cluster. This extended X-ray emission has been ascribed to either inverse Compton scattering of the 3° microwave background by relativistic electrons in the intra-cluster medium or to thermal-bremsstrahlung emission by an optically thin plasma at - 10s K.

It is now generally accepted that the remnants of supernovae (SNRs) are of two types, recognizable by their radio structure and spectral index. To date most of the radio sources identified as SNRs are of the easily identified shell type. These have spectral indices a of -0.5 ±0.2 and exhibit some degree of annular brightness distribution — the projection of the radio shell. The second type, e.g. the Crab Nebula, have filled structures and relatively flat (a = -0.1 ±0.1) spectral indices. The relatively strong radio polarization exhibited by some members of this class has led to their identification but generally they tend to be hidden amongst the HII regions in our galaxy.

Theoretical work on the radio emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) has not developed much since the pioneering work of Shklovsky (1960) and van der Laa (1962a, b). Despite agreement that the emission results from the synchrotron process, the origin of the relativistic particles and magnetic field is not clear. There are three reasonable alternatives:

1. (i) particles and field originate within the ejected material (e.g. Shklovsky 1960);

2. (ii) both field and particles originate in the compressed interstellar medium (e.g. van der Laan 1962a);

3. (iii) the field is interstellar but the particles are from the ejecta (as outlined by van der Laan 1962b).

Cas A has a radio surface brightness much higher (by a factor of about 100) than that of any other galactic supernova remnant (SNR) and is probably the youngest (≤ 300 yr). It therefore provides unique information on young remnants, but this very uniqueness makes it hazardous to treat Cas A as a typical remnant. However, because it (i) shows a clearly defined shell of radio emission of much the same type as older remnants, and (ii) lies approximately on the extrapolation of the Σ.-D (surface brightness-diameter) relationship derived for older remnants (Clark and Caswell 1976); Caswell and Lerche 1979a), detailed comparison with older remnants seems appropriate.

The University of Tasmania balloon-borne large area X-ray telescope was flown from Alice Springs on 20 November 1978. A number of known X-ray sources were observed and a transient increase believed to be a gamma ray burst was detected.

The problem of radiative transfer in the presence of a magnetic field may be formulated in terms of four interdependent differential equations for the four Stokes parameters I, Q, U and V (Hardorp et al. 1976)
