We have studied the consequences of interacting coronal mass ejections (CMEs) of June 13-14, 2012 which were directed towards Earth and caused a moderate geomagnetic storm with Dst index ~ −86 nT. We analysed the in-situ observations of the solar wind plasma and magnetic field parameters obtained from the OMNI database for these CMEs. The in-situ observations show that the interacting CMEs arrive at Earth with the strongest (~ 150 nT) Sudden Storm Commencement (SSC) of the solar cycle 24. We compared these interacting CMEs to a similar interaction event which occurred during November 9-10, 2012. This occurred in the same phase of the solar cycle 24 but resulted in an intense geomagnetic storm (Dst ~ −108 nT), as reported by Mishra et al. (2015). Our analysis shows that in the June event, the interaction led to a merged structure at 1 AU while in the case of November 2012 event, the interacted CMEs arrived as two distinct structures at 1 AU. The geomagnetic signatures of the two cases reveal that both resulted in a single step geomagnetic storm.

The interferometric and single-dish observations of the Extended Green Objects sample have been carried out in order to check the possible common pumping mechanism of class I methanol maser (cIMM) and OH(1720 MHz) maser and their identification with a front of bipolar outflow as a source of interstellar shock stimulating collisional pumping of the molecules. High spatial and spectral resolution observations of OH masers allow us to investigate structure, kinematics, and magnetic field configuration of the inner region of the source, i.e., the outflow ejection region. Analysis of magnetic field strength in a disk area is crucial to understanding of the outflow origin.

With the advent of ALMA, complete surveys of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks are being carried out in different star forming regions. In particular, continuum emission is used to trace the large (mm-sized) dust grains and CO isotopologues are observed in order to trace the bulk of the gas. The attempt is to simultaneously constrain the gas and dust disk mass as well as the gas/dust mass ratio. In this work the observations from the Lupus disk survey have been analyzed with thermo-chemical disk models, including radiative transfer, CO isotope-selective processes and freeze-out. We find that CO-based gas masses are very low, often smaller than 1MJ. Moreover, gas/dust mass ratios are much lower than value of 100 found in the ISM, being mainly between 1 and 10. This result can be interpreted either as rapid loss of gas, or as a chemical effect removing carbon from CO and locking it into more complex molecules or in larger bodies. Current data cannot distinguish between the two scenarios (except for sources with detected HD lines), but future observations of e.g. [CI] and hydrocarbon lines will help to calibrate CO-based gas masses and to constrain disk gas masses.

The Global Muon Detector Network (GMDN) is composed by four ground cosmic ray detectors distributed around the Earth: Nagoya (Japan), Hobart (Australia), Sao Martinho da Serra (Brazil) and Kuwait city (Kuwait). The network has operated since March 2006. It has been upgraded a few times, increasing its detection area. Each detector is sensitive to muons produced by the interactions of ~50 GeV Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) with the Earth′s atmosphere. At these energies, GCR are known to be affected by interplanetary disturbances in the vicinity of the earth. Of special interest are the interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and their driven shocks because they are known to be the main origins of geomagnetic storms. It has been observed that these ICMEs produce changes in the cosmic ray gradient, which can be measured by GMDN observations. In terms of applications for space weather, some attempts have been made to use GMDN for forecasting ICME arrival at the earth with lead times of the order of few hours. Scientific space weather studies benefit the most from the GMDN network. As an example, studies have been able to determine ICME orientation at the earth using cosmic ray gradient. Such determinations are of crucial importance for southward interplanetary magnetic field estimates, as well as ICME rotation.

Throughout his career, George Ellery Hale thought globally. “Make no small plans” he was often heard to say (Seares 1939). His early sojourns to Europe, encountering the talent and resources in England and the Continent, contributed to his outlook. He knew that their patronage was critical to reach his personal goals. Here I outline the steps Hale took to establish the new “astrophysics” as a discipline, by creating the Astrophysical Journal, establishing a common language and then, through the first decades of the 20th Century, building an international collaboration to coordinate solar and later all astronomical research. The latter effort, which began in 1904, had expanded by 1910 to encompass stellar astronomy, when the Solar Union deliberated over spectroscopic classification systems, a standard wavelength system and stellar magnitude systems. This work continued through the fifth Union meeting in Bonn in 1913, which turned out to be the last because of the First World War. During the war, Hale became Chair of the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, applying scientific talent to winning the war. He was also the Academy’s Foreign Secretary, so Hale became deeply involved in re-establishing international scientific relations after the war. In conjunction with Arthur Schuster and Emile Picard, he helped found the International Research Council in 1919, which formed the framework within which the worlds of science reorganized themselves. From this, the International Astronomical Union was born. It was not an easy birth in a world still filled with tension and anger over the war; formative conferences in London and Brussels reflected the extremes. Nevertheless, its first General Assembly was held in Rome in 1922. It would be years before it became truly international, “in the complete sense of the word” (Elis Strömgren), but many of the proposals made during the years of the Solar Union concerning disciplinary standardization were ratified. I will concentrate on this latter story, remembering Hale for his devotion to true internationalism.

Recently the search for the oldest stars have started to focus on the Bulge region. The Galactic bulge hosts extremely old stars, with ages compatible with the ages of the oldest halo stars. The data coming from these recent observations present new chemical signatures and therefore provide complementary constraints to those already found in the halo. So, the study of the oldest bulge stars can improve dramatically the constraints on the nature of first stars and how they polluted the pristine ISM of our Galaxy. We present our first results regarding the light elements (CNO) and the neutron capture elements. Our findings in the oldest bulge stars support the scenario where the first stellar generations have been fast rotators.

A key parameter governing the secular evolution of protoplanetary disks is their outer radius. In this paper, the feedback of realistic dust grain size distributions onto the gas emission is investigated. Models predict that the difference of dust and gas extents as traced by CO is primarily caused by differences in the optical depth of lines vs continuum. The main effect of radial drift is the sharp decrease in the intensity profile at the outer edge. The gas radial extent can easily range within a factor of 2 for models with different turbulence. A combination of grain growth and vertical settling leads to thermal de-coupling between gas and dust at intermediate scale-heights. A proper treatment of the gas thermal structure within dust gaps will be fundamental to disentangle surface density gaps from gas temperature gaps.

The LIGO direct-detection of gravitational waves arriving from cosmic sources—now, happily including (as of this meeting!) the merging of two neutron stars—opens a new chapter in our understanding of physics itself: for General Relativity, conceptually so extremely simple, has robustly produced predictions that have invariably been found to be correct when tested. My poster (page 3 of this paper) is intended for high school students who have just learned simple algebra. My derivation of the famous E = mc2 from the Pythagorean Theorem necessarily requires an algebraic expansion that is due to Newton, but apart from that it is simplicity itself: a transparent introduction to what all of physics is today: the construction of mathematics that, miraculously, reproduces our observations of the world—and which also successfully predicts the results of future observations—as so magnificently demonstrated at this glorious Symposium!

The aim of this work is to explore the connection between variability in single pulse intensity and periodic switching of the position angle (PA) of the linear polarisation and how this relates to the radio emission mechanism. There are five pulsars reported in the literature for which the PA is seen to periodically change in tandem with the variability in their pulse shapes. This behaviour is seemingly incompatible with two well established models of the radio emission mechanism. The purpose of this study is to investigate in a systematic way whether this phenomenon is common or if only happens in special cases, using a high-quality sample of pulsar data observed with the Parkes telescope. We show that the connection between polarisation variability and intensity variability is more common than previously expected.

Since the IAU (maser-)Symposium 287 in Stellenbosch/South Africa (Jan. 2012), great progress has been achieved in studying extragalactic maser sources. Sensitivity has reached a level allowing for dedicated maser surveys of extragalactic objects. These included, during the last years, water vapor (H2O), methanol (CH3OH), and formaldehyde (H2CO), while surveys related to hydroxyl (OH), cyanoacetylene (HC3N) and ammonia (NH3) may soon become (again) relevant. Overall, with the upgraded Very Large Array (VLA), the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), FAST (Five hundred meter Aperture Synthesis Telescope) and the low frequency arrays APERTIF (APERture Tile in Focus), ASKAP (Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder) and MeerKAT (Meer Karoo Array Telescope), extragalactic maser studies are expected to flourish during the upcoming years. The following article provides a brief sketch of past achievements, ongoing projects and future perspectives.

Solar activity is observed to fluctuate with time, undergoing a wide range of periodicities from minutes up to thousands of years as evinced from proxies based on cosmogenic isotopes. In this work, we apply Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSSA), a data-adaptive, multivariate technique that simultaneously exploits the spatial and temporal correlations of the input data to extract common modes of variability to investigate the intermediate quasi-periodicities of the green coronal emission line at 530.3 nm for the period between 1944 and 2008. A preliminary MSSA analysis confirms the presence of significant quasi-biennial oscillations in the data with amplitude varying significantly with time and latitude. On the other hand, a clear North-South asymmetry is observed both in their intensity and period distribution.

The Crab pulsar has a striking radio profile, dominated by two pulse components (the main pulse and interpulse) which are comprised of giant pulses. These pulses are randomly occurring, they extend to extremely high flux densities, and are closely aligned with emission across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The Crab, like many pulsars, exhibits scintillation – a pattern in frequency and time arising from interfering scattered images. The pattern varies with location, with the physical scale over which it changes by order unity corresponding to the spatial resolution of the scattering surface. For the Crab, the scattering is in the nebula and the estimated spatial resolution is of order the light cylinder radius. Comparing scintillation spectra of the two components, we infer a difference in physical location of the same order.

The solar oscillation frequencies have shown variation over the solar activity cycle, which is believed to be the indicator of the structural and magnetic changes taking place in the Sun. The ground-based network of six identical solar telescopes in the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) program has been nearly-continuously observing the Sun since the last quarter of the year 1995 for Doppler imaging of the solar-disk aimed to study the oscillations and velocity flows on the surface of the Sun. In this work, we study the variations in the solar disk-integrated mean velocity flows on the solar surface as observed with the GONG over the complete Solar Cycle 23 and ongoing Cycle 24. The correlation analysis of these solar photospheric mean velocity flows relative to the various solar activity indicators is also discussed.

Case studies show that some energetic particle flux enhancements up to MeV/nuc. observed at 1 AU cannot be treated as a consequence of particle acceleration at shocks or during flares. Atypical energetic particle events (AEPEs) are often detected during crossings of magnetic cavities formed by strong current sheets of various origins in the solar wind. Such cavities confine small-scale magnetic islands (SMIs) produced by magnetic reconnection. SMIs, in turn, trap and re-accelerate energetic particles according to predictions based on the theory of Zank et al. describing stochastic particle energization in the supersonic solar wind via numerous dynamically interacting SMIs. AEPEs possess energies that overlap SEP events and can be an important component in understanding space weather.

The Hubble constant is a key cosmological parameter that sets the present-day expansion rate as well as the age, size, and critical density of the Universe. Intriguingly, there is currently a tension in the measurements of its value in the standard flat ΛCDM model – observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background with the Planck satellite lead to a value of the Hubble constant that is lower than the measurements from the local Cepheids-supernovae distance ladder and strong gravitational lensing. Precise and accurate Hubble constant measurements from independent probes, including water masers, are necessary to assess the significance of this tension and the possible need of new physics beyond the current standard cosmological model. We present the progress toward an accurate Hubble constant determination.

It is no coincidence that IAU and Saha’s ionization formula are about the same age. Both events are related to World War 1 and connected with Germany though in entirely different ways.

Once sufficiently large number of stellar spectra had been obtained and empirically classified according to the Harvard scheme, it was inevitable that theoretical explanation would be forthcoming. The only surprise was that the breakthrough came from the far-off Calcutta which was nowhere on the world research map.

History chose the hour; the hour produced an unlikely hero: Meghnad Saha. Calcutta University had just become a research centre under Indian auspices. By a fortuitous combination of circumstances immediately after the war, the latest German language physics publications arrived in Calcutta as a personal library. While Europe needed time to resume scientific exchanges and activity, India seized the opportunity and produced two outstanding pieces of theoretical work: Saha’s ionization formula (1920), and Bose statistics (1926). It is to the credit of The Royal Society that it elected Saha as a member (1927) in spite of the government’s objections arising from Saha’s anti-British stance. Saha however was unable to carry out further observational and experimental work suggested by the theory.

Saha was a multi-faceted personality with strong views on political ideology, the role of science in a new nation and other topics. India’s charismatic Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, during 1947-1964 had a soft corner for sophisticated, suave, upper-crust people. Impatient and angry, confrontational rather than persuasive, Saha did not qualify.

Saha is justly regarded as one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics. Examination of his life and work is a rewarding exercise from various points of view: development of modern astronomy; Western science and the non-West; and political and social activism of a leading scientist and educator.

I review massive star formation in our Galaxy, focussing on initial conditions in Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs), including the search for massive pre-stellar cores (PSCs), and modeling of later stages of massive protostars, i.e., hot molecular cores (HMCs). I highlight how developments in astrochemistry, coupled with rapidly improving theoretical/computational and observational capabilities are helping to improve our understanding of the complex process of massive star formation.

The SDSS Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) has collected high resolution near-IR spectra for several hundred thousand stars throughout the Milky Way. We review some of the results related to chemistry of stars in the disk, where APOGEE has a particular advantage by virtue of being able to work in more obscured areas. The ability to measure carbon and nitrogen abundances in giants in the near-IR provides insight into stellar ages. We summarize results on the variation of mean metallicity, metallicity distribution functions, and the [α/Fe]–[Fe/H] relation across the Galactic disk, as well as results on the structural parameters in mono-abundance populations. Many of these results suggest that radial migration has played a significant role in the Galactic disk. It may be possible to disentangle radial mixing using multi-element abundance patterns.

Fluxes of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) observed at 1 AU are modulated inside the heliosphere at different time scales. Here we study the properties of the power spectral density (PSD) of galactic cosmic ray variability using hourly data from 31 neutron monitors (NM) from 1953 to 2016. We pay particular attention to the reliability of the used datasets and methods. We present the overall PSD and discuss different parts of the spectrum and the related periodicities. We find significant spectral peaks at the periods of 11 years, 1.75 years, 155 days, 27 days and 24 hours and the harmonics of the latter two peaks. We calculate a power law slope of −1.79 ± 0.13 for the period range between 50 and 130 hours and a slope of −1.34 ± 0.17 for the period range between 40 days and 3.4 years (1000 − 30000 h).
