We study the radial distribution of oxygen and nitrogen abundances in H ii regions in 350 galaxies observed in the CALIFA survey using the semi-empirical N-sensitive code Hii-Chi-mistry. A separate analysis of N/O when using [N ii] is justified as the dispersion in the O/H-N/O diagram is very large. In fact different O/H and N/O slope distributions and flattening in the outskirts are obtained.On the other hand there is a tight correlation between O/H and N/O when the values of the fittings at the effective radius are considered as representative of each galaxy.

Star-formation regions in nearby galaxies provide an excellent laboratory to study star formation processes, evolution of massive stars and the properties of the surrounding interstellar medium. A wealth of information can be obtained from their spectral analysis of the emission lines and the stellar continuum. Considering these, we proposed a long-term project “Spectroscopic Observations of the Star Formation Regions in Nearby Galaxies”. The primary goal of this project is to observe spectroscopy of star formation regions in 20 nearby galaxies, with the NAOC 2.16 m telescope and the Hectospec/MMT multifiber spectrograph. With the spectra of a large sample of star formation regions, combining multi-wavelength data from UV to IR, we can investigate, understand and quantify the dust extinction, star formation rate, metal abundance, and the two-dimensional distributions of stellar population properties of nearby galaxies. It will be important for a better understanding of galaxy formation. Here we report on the observations, data reduction, and analysis of the spectra of ~ 400 star formation regions in M33, via multifiber spectroscopy with Hectospec at the MMT.

Ices form on the surfaces of interstellar and circumstellar dust grains though freeze-out of molecules and atoms from the gas-phase followed by chemical reactions. The composition, chemistry, structure and desorption properties of these ices regulate two important aspects of planet formation: the locations of major condensation fronts in protoplanetary disks (i.e. snow lines) and the formation efficiencies of complex organic molecules in astrophysical environments. The latter regulates the availability of prebiotic material on nascent planets. With ALMA it is possible to directly observe both (CO) snowlines and complex organics in protoplanetary disks. The interpretation of these observations requires a detailed understanding of the fundamental ice processes that regulate the build-up, evolution and desorption of icy grain mantles. This proceeding reviews how experiments on thermal CO and N2 ice desorption, UV photodesorption of CO ice, and CO diffusion in H2O ice have been used to guide and interpret astrochemical observations of snowlines and complex molecules.

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) provide a unique way of selecting a sample of actively star-forming galaxies independent of their brightness and at practically any redshift. I will review what we know about the hosts and more immediate environments of LGRBs from two different perspectives: ultraviolet absorption-line spectroscopy of the bright early afterglow, and observations of their hosts in emission once the afterglow has faded away.

With the velocity de-projection technique, we derived the averaged 3 dimensional local velocity distribution using only the line-of-sight velocity for the 200,000 FGK type main-sequence stars from the LAMOST DR1 data. Taking the effective temperature as a proxy for age, we investigate the variation of the velocity distribution as a function of Teff and disk height within 100 < |z| < 500 pc. Using the mean velocities of the cool stars, we derive the solar motion of (U⊙, V⊙, W⊙)=(9.58±2.39, 10.52±1.96, 7.01±1.67) kms−1 with respect to the local standard of rest (LSR). Moreover, we find that the stars with Teff > 6000 K show a net asymmetric motion of 〈U〉~2 kms−1 and 〈W〉~3 kms−1 compared to the stars with Teff < 6000 K. And their azimuthal velocity increases when |z| increases. The asymmetric motion in the warmer stars is likely because they are too young and not completely relaxed.

Our purpose is to measure thickness of gaseous discs in 0 < z < 1.2 galaxies. As gas dispersions are sensitive to scale height of gaseous discs, we model the kinematics of galaxies using Jeans equations. The resulting thicknesses of gaseous discs at higher redshifts are more thicker (and arbitrary) while nearby ones are thinner. We also found that clumpiness of galaxy is a possible indicator of the gas disc thickness.

One of the main scientific goals of the Herschel Gould Belt survey is to elucidate the physical mechanisms responsible for the formation and evolution of prestellar cores in molecular clouds. In the ~11 deg2 field of Aquila imaged with Herschel/PACS-SPIRE at 70–500 μm, we have identified a complete sample of 651 starless cores, 446 of them are gravitationally-bound candidate prestellar cores. Our Herschel observations also provide an unprecedented census of filaments in the Aquila cloud and suggest an intimate connection between these filaments and the formation process of prestellar cores. Indeed, a strong correlation is found between their spatial distributions. These Herschel findings support a filamentary paradigm for the early stages of star formation, where the cores result from the gravitational fragmentation of the densest filaments.

The construction of viable and physically-realistic interstellar dust models is only possible if the constraints imposed by laboratory data on interstellar dust analogue materials are respected and used within a meaningful theoretical framework. These “physical” dust models can then be directly compared to observations without the need for any tuning to fit the observations. Such models will generally fail to achieve the excellent fits to observations that “empirical” models are able to achieve. However, the physically-realistic approach will necessarily lead to a deeper insight and a fuller understanding of the nature and evolution of interstellar dust. The THEMIS modelling approach, based on (hydrogenated) amorphous carbons and amorphous silicates with metallic Fe and/or FeS nano-inclusions appears to be a promising move in this direction.

Gas inflow and outflow are the most important processes, which determine the structural and chemical evolution of a disk galaxy like the Milky Way. In order to get new insights into these baryonic processes in Milky Way like galaxies (MWLGs), we consider the data of distant star-forming galaxies and investigate the evolution of the radial density profile of their stellar components and the associated total amount of gaseous inflow and outflow. For this purpose, we analyze the redshift evolution of their stellar mass distribution, combined with the scaling relations between the mass of baryonic components, star formation rate and chemical abundance for both high- and low-z star-forming galaxies. As a result, we find the new relations between star formation rate and inflow/outflow rate as deduced from these distant galaxies, which will provide fundamental information for understanding the structural and chemical evolution of MWLGs.

We study the effect of environment to fundamental relation of elliptical galaxies. We find that superclusters, filaments and groups give noticeable effect to slope of velocity dispersions while little to luminosity slope.

We reviewed chemical evolution of galaxies using our cosmological simulations.

The current IAU Symposium is closely connected to the EU-funded network DAGAL (Detailed Anatomy of Galaxies), with the final annual network meeting of DAGAL being at the core of this international symposium. In this short paper, we give an overview of DAGAL, its training activities, and some of the scientific advances that have been made under its umbrella.

We present our new, spatially-resolved, photometry in FUV and NUV from images obtained by GALEX, and IRAC1 (3.6 μm) photometry obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope. We analyzed the surface brightness profiles μFUV, μNUV, μ[3.6], as well as the radial evolution of the (FUV-NUV), (FUV - [3.6]), and (NUV - [3.6]) colors in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structures in Galaxies (S4G) galaxies (d < 40 Mpc) sample. We defined the GALEX Blue Sequence (GBS) and GALEX Red Sequence (GBR) from the (FUV - NUV) versus (NUV - [3.6]) color-color diagram, populated by late-type star forming galaxies and quiescent early-type galaxies respectively. While most disk becomes radially bluer for GBS galaxies, and stay constant for GRS galaxies, a large fraction ( > 50%) of intermediary GALEX Green Valley (GGV) galaxies’ outer disks are becoming redder. An outside-in quenching mechanism such as environmentally-related mechanisms such as starvation or ram-pressure-stripping could explain our results.

We explore the environmental status of three low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) KKH65, KK180 and KK227 using the results of our long slit spectroscopic observations at the 6m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences and surface photometry on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images. The objects were selected by Karachentseva in 2010 as presumably isolated galaxies. The obtained surface brightness profiles demonstrate that our sample dSphs are less centrally concentrated than the objects of the same morphological type in the Virgo cluster (VC). Using the derived kinematic data we searched for possible neighbours of the dSphs within the projected distances from them Rproj > 500 kpc and with the differences in radial velocities |Δ V| > 500 kms−1. We applied the group finding algorithm by Makarov and Karachentsev to the selected sample. Our analysis shows that the dwarf galaxies of our study are not isolated. KKH65 and KK227 belong to the groups NGC3414 and NGC5371, respectively. KK180 is in the VC infall region. We conclude that it is not possible at the moment to justify the existence of isolated dSphs outside the Local Volume. The searches are complicated due to the lack of the accurate distances to the galaxies farther than 10 Mpc.

Ices play a key role in the formation of simple and complex molecules in dense molecular clouds and in the envelopes and protoplanetary disks surrounding young stars. Some fraction of the interstellar ices may become building blocks of comets, and thus be delivered to the early Earth. Laboratory simulations have proven to be crucial in the derivation of ice abundances, in quantifying reaction rates on cold grain surfaces, in determining the thermal and energetic processing history of the ices, and in understanding the interaction between the ices and the underlying refractory grain surfaces. In this invited topical paper I will review possible ways forward in improving our knowledge of the composition of the ices, as many signatures in the interstellar spectra are still poorly identified. I will also emphasize the observed importance of thermal processing of the ices (crystallization, segregation), which likely affects the chemistry after the initial dominance of grain surface reactions. Continued laboratory work is warranted in view of the upcoming observational data from, for example, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which is ideally suited for ices studies. For an exhaustive review on this topic I refer to Boogert, Gerakines & Whittet (2015).

We examine metallicities, ages and orbital properties of halo stars in a Milky-Way like disk galaxy formed in the cosmological hydrodynamical MaGICC simulations. Halo stars were either accreted from satellites or they formed in situ in the disk or bulge of the galaxy and were then kicked up into the halo (“in situ/kicked-up” stars). Regardless of where they formed both types show surprisingly similar orbital properties: the majority of both types are on short-axis tubes with the same sense of rotation as the disk – implying that a large fraction of satellites are accreted onto the halo with the same sense of angular momentum as the disk.

We have made near-infrared (JHKs) imaging polarimetry toward 24 bright-rimmed clouds in the southern hemisphere in order to reveal their magnetic field structures. The obtained polarization vector maps show that the magnetic field directions inside the bright rim are different from its ambient magnetic field direction, implying that magnetic field structures just inside the ionized front of the clouds are due to the gas compression by UV radiation from nearby massive star. Our investigation into the relation between the magnetic field configuration and the shape of the cloud suggests that the magnetic field configuration affects the evolution of the cloud shape.

I will describe the Swift Host Galaxy Legacy Survey (SHOALS), a comprehensive multiwavelengthprogram to characterize the demographics of the GRB host population and its redshift evolution from z=0 to z=7.Using unbiased selection criteria we have designated a subset of 119 Swift gamma-ray bursts which are now beingtargeted with intensive observational follow-up. Deep Spitzer imaging of every field has already been obtained andanalyzed, with major programs ongoing at Keck, GTC, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan to obtain complementaryoptical/NIR photometry and spectroscopy to enable full SED modeling and derivation of fundamental physicalparameters such as mass, extinction, and star-formation rate. Using these data I will present an unbiasedmeasurement of the GRB host-galaxy luminosity and mass distributions and their evolution with redshift, compareGRB hosts to other star-forming galaxy populations, and discuss implications for the nature of the GRB progenitor andthe ability of GRBs to serve as tools for measuring and studying cosmic star-formation in the distant universe.

Cosmological simulations predict that dark matter halos with circular velocities lower than 30 km/s should have lost most of their neutral gas by heating of the ultra-violet background. This is in stark contrast with gas-rich galaxies such as e.g. Leo T, Leo P and Pisces A, which all have circular velocities of ~15 km/s (Ryan-Weber et al. 2008, Bernstein-Cooper et al. 2014, Tollerud et al. 2015). We show that when we include feedback from the first stars into our models, simulated dwarfs have very different properties at redshift 0 than when this form of feedback is not included. Including this Population-III feedback leads to galaxies that lie on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation over the entire mass range of star forming dwarf galaxies, as well as reproducing a broad range of other observational properties.

We studied the variation of stellar mass and various star-formation characteristics of satellite galaxies in a volume limited sample of nearby groups as a function of their group-centric distance and of their relative line-of-sight velocity in the group rest frame. We found clear radial dependencies, e.g. massive, red and passive satellites being distributed predominantly near the center of composite group. We also found some evidence of velocity modulation of star-forming properties of satellite galaxies near the group virial radius. We conclude that using kinematical data, it should be feasible to separate dynamical classes of bound, in-falling and 'backsplash' satellite galaxies.
