Understanding the variable emission of blazars observed with gamma-ray telescopes and Fermi has become a major challenge for theoretical models of particle acceleration. Here, we introduce a novel time-dependent emission model in which the maximum energy of particles is determined from a balance between Fermi type I and II acceleration energy gains and radiative energy losses, allowing for an explanation of both the characteristic spectral energy distribution of blazars and their intrinsic sub-hour variability. Additionally, we can determine the physical condition of the emitting plasma concerning its turbulence and typical shock speeds.

Observational contraints on the evolution and instabilities of massive stars at very low metallicities are limited. Most of the information come from HST observations of one target, I Zw 18. Recent distance estimates of I Zw 18 put it at 17 Mpc, moving detailed studies of single stars clearly beyond the range of current ground based telescopes. Since massive stars with metallcities of 1/10 of solar and below are our best proxies for massive stars in (proto-) galaxies around the time of reionization, finding them and studying their evolution and instabilities is of premium importance for our understanding of galaxy formation, feedback, and the IGM reionization. Here we present pilot study results of variable stars in two more nearby extremely low metallicity galaxies, UGC 5340 and UGCA 292, and comment on the possibilities of more detailed studies of variable massive stars with new ground-based instrumentation.

The Gaia astrometric mission holds the promise for crucial contributions to almost every subject of astrophysics and astronomy, including planetary systems astrophysics. We focus on the potential of the Gaia mission as perfect tool for a complete screening of nearby stars in search for exoplanets. We build our dissertation on the most recent results of the satellites astrometric payload performances and data reduction capabilities. We put the identified capabilities in context by illustrating the outstanding contribution to planetary sciences, in combination with nowadays and next decade exoplanets search programs, as a complement to other indirect and direct methods for the detection and characterization of planetary systems. We conclude by highlighting the crucial improvements in the optimization of the target lists of future dedicated observatory projects.

Over the 18 years since its discovery, GRS 1915+105 has continuously brightened in the X/γ-ray sky. It is considered the prototypical microquasar. Most of these are LMXBs that show sporadic ejection of matter at apparently superluminal velocities. In these the three basic ingredients of quasars are found: a black hole, an accretion disc and collimated jets of high energy particles, but in microquasars the black hole is only a few M⊙ instead of several × 106 M⊙; the accretion disc had mean thermal temperature of several × 106 K instead of several × 103 K, and the particles ejected at relativistic speeds travel distances of a few ly only, compared to few × 106 ly as in radio galaxies. However many open issues remain to be addressed.

The chronology of galactic bulge and disk formation is studied by analysing the relative contributions of these components to the B band rest–frame luminosity density (LD) at two different cosmological epochs. The luminosity function (LF) of the bulge and disk components at z ~ 0.8 is computed on a galaxy subsample of the final zCOSMOS “bright” catalogue of roughly 20,000 objects with spectroscopic redshift in the COSMOS field. The comparison is then performed on galaxies in the local universe. Our preliminary results show that the LD in the disk component strongly decreases from ~ 80% at z ~ 0.8 to ~ 50% at z = 0, the bulges having a specular behaviour. The observational constraints provided in this work are aimed to discriminate among competing scenarios of galaxy formation and evolution. An appropriate comparison with hydrodynamical semianalytical models will be considered in a future study to understand further the formation and evolution of galaxies.

A model for OJ 287 consisting of two orbiting black holes has been constructed using optical light curve data. The model has successfully predicted the occurrence of sharp optical outbursts of OJ 287 for the past 15 years. Here we test if also the variations in the radio jet position angle can be explained within the framework of this same model, which has most of its parameters fixed by the timing of the optical flares. The model applied here has only three free parameters left, the (trivial) zero point of the jet position angle, the time lag between changes in the disk and jet orientations, and the zero point of the viewing angle. Despite its simplicity and the small number of free parameters, the model appears to be able to reproduce the main properties of the observed position angle variations during the past 30 years. The best fits are obtained when the time lag is either ~4 or ~14 years. However, the jet orientation seems to be unrelated to the direction of the spin of the primary black hole. This implies, assuming that the basic model is correct, that the mean orientation of the jet is determined by the orientation of the inner accretion disk, not by the spin axis of the black hole.

This paper provides an overview of the ESA Planck mission and its scientific promises. Planck is equipped with a 1.5–m effective aperture telescope with two actively-cooled instruments observing the sky in nine frequency channels from 30 GHz to 857 GHz: the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) operating at 20 K with pseudo-correlation radiometers, and the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) with bolometers operating at 100 mK. After the successful launch in May 2009, Planck has already mapped the sky twice (at the time of writing this review) with the expected behavior and it is planned to complete at least two further all-sky surveys. The first scientific results, consisting of an Early Release Compact Source Catalog (ERCSC) and in about twenty papers on instrument performance in flight, data analysis pipeline, and main astrophysical results, will be released on January 2011. The first publications of the main cosmological implications are expected in 2012.

we investigate the emergence of a large-scale magnetic field. This field is dynamo-generated by turbulence driven with a helical forcing function. Twisted arcade-like field structures are found to emerge in the exterior above the turbulence zone. Time series of the magnetic field structure show recurrent plasmoid ejections.

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) offer a new way to accelerate numerical calculations by means of on-board massive parallelisation. We discuss two examples of GPU implementation relevant for cosmological simulations, an N-Body Particle-mesh solver and a radiative transfer code. The latter has also been ported on multi-GPU clusters. The range of acceleration (x30-x80) achieved here offer bright perspective for large scale simulations driven by GPUs.

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) sausage tube waves are excited in the magnetic flux tubes by p-mode forcing. These tube waves thus carry energy away from the p-mode cavity which results in the deficit of incident p-mode energy. We calculate the loss of incident p-mode energy as a damping rate of f- and p-modes. We calculate the damping rates of f- and p-modes by a model Sun consisting of an ensemble of many thin magnetic flux tubes with varying plasma properties and distributions. Each magnetic flux tube is modelled as axisymmetric, vertically oriented and untwisted. We find that the magnitude and the form of the damping rates are sensitive to the plasma-β of the tubes and the upper boundary condition used.

Spurred by the recent large number of radial velocity detections and the discovery of several transiting system and among those two planets, that are consistent with rocky composition, the study of planets orbiting nearby stars has now entered an era of characterizing massive terrestrial planets (aka super-Earths). One prominent question is, if such planets could be habitats. Here we focuss on one particular planet Gl581d. For Earth-like assumptions, we investigate the minimal atmospheric conditions for Gl581d to be potentially habitable at its current position, and if habitability could be remotely detected in its spectra. The model we present here only represents one possible nature an Earth-like composition - of a planet like Gl581d in a wide parameter space. Future observations of atmospheric features of such super-Earths can be used to examine if our concept of habitability and its dependence on the carbonate-silicate cycle is correct, and also assess whether Gl581d is indeed the first detected habitable super-Earth. We will need spectroscopic measurements to probe the atmosphere of such planets to break the degeneracy of mass and radius measurements and characterize a planetary environment.

This article summarises the discussion following Session 3 (Populations of OB stars in galaxies) of IAUS 272.

Polarization and wavelength are the bits of information attached to every photon that reveal the most about its formation and subsequent history. The E-ELT will, for the foreseeable future, be the most powerful optical light-collecting machine ever built. The strength of its combination, spectropolarimetry with the E-ELT, is the anchorage in physics of astronomical observations. I present a strawman design of a spectropolarimeter for its intermediate focus.

The program of IAU scientific meetings is one of the most important means by which the IAU pursues its goal of promoting astronomy through international collaboration. A large fraction of the Union's budget is devoted to the support of these IAU scientific meetings. The IAU Executive Committee (EC) places great emphasis on maintaining high scientific standards, coverage of a balanced spectrum of topics, and an appropriately broad and international flavour for the program of IAU meetings. In that respect, the ICSU rules on non-discrimination in the access of qualified scientists from all parts of the world to any IAU meeting apply. We present an evolutionary study of 28 Tau, a Be star, in connection with its rapid rotation. The photometric data during the absence of its envelope in 1921 have been used to determine the effective temperature and luminosity of the star at the main sequence of the HR diagram. From an evolutionary model, we found that the mass and radius of the star are about 3.2 M⊙ and 3.2 R⊙ respectively. The equatorial rotation velocity of the star, νe found to be close to its critical velocity, νcr where νe/νcr ≃ 0.87.

GAMER is a GPU-accelerated Adaptive-MEsh-Refinement code for astrophysical simulations. In this work, two further extensions of the code are reported. First, we have implemented the MUSCL-Hancock method with the Roe's Riemann solver for the hydrodynamic evolution, by which the accuracy, overall performance and the GPU versus CPU speed-up factor are improved. Second, we have implemented the out-of-core computation, which utilizes the large storage space of multiple hard disks as the additional run-time virtual memory and permits an extremely large problem to be solved in a relatively small-size GPU cluster. The communication overhead associated with the data transfer between the parallel hard disks and the main memory is carefully reduced by overlapping it with the CPU/GPU computations.

In this paper, we compare components of the horizontal flow below the solar surface in and around regions consisting of rotating and non-rotating sunspots. Our analysis suggests that there is a significant variation in both components of the horizontal flow at the beginning of sunspot rotation as compared to the non-rotating sunspot. The flows in surrounding areas are in most cases relatively small. However, there is a significant influence of the motion on flows in an area closest to the sunspot rotation.

Broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is used to study a deep sample of UV-selected sub-L* galaxies at z~2. They are found to be less dusty than L* galaxies, and to contribute more mass to the cosmic mass budget at this epoch than is inferred from shallower high-z surveys. Additionally, SFRs are found to be proportional to stellar masses over three orders of magnitude in mass; this phenomenon can be explained by assuming that new stars form out of gas that co-accretes along with dark matter onto the galaxies' dark matter halos, a scenario that naturally leads to SFRs that gradually increase with time.

The observed X-ray luminosity of SS 433 is ~1036 erg/s, it is known that all the radiation is formed in the famous SS 433 jets. The bolometric luminosity of SS 433 is ~1040 erg/s, and originally the luminosity must be realized in X-rays. The original radiation is probably thermalized in the supercritical accretion disk wind, however the missing more than four orders of magnitude is surprising. We have analysed the XMM-Newton spectra of SS 433 using a model of adiabatically and radiatively cooling X-ray jets. The multi-temperature thermal jet model reproduces very well the strongest observed emission lines, but it can not reproduce the continuum radiation and some spectral features. We have found a notable contribution of ionized reflection to the spectrum in the energy range from ~3 to 12 keV. The reflected spectrum is an evidence of the supercritical disk funnel, where the illuminating radiation comes from deeper funnel regions, to be further reflected in the outer visible funnel walls (r ≥ 2 ⋅ 1011 cm). The illuminating spectrum is similar to that observed in ULXs, its luminosity has to be no less than ~1039 erg/s. A soft excess has been detected, that does not depend on the thermal jet model details. It may be represented as a BB with a temperature of Tbb ≈ 0.1 keV and luminosity of Lbb~3 ⋅ 1037 erg/s. The soft spectral component has about the same parameters as those found in ULXs.
