We present GalMC (Acquaviva et al. 2011), our publicly available Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for SED fitting, show the results obtained for a stacked sample of Lyman Alpha Emitting galaxies at z ~ 3, and discuss the dependence of the inferred SED parameters on the assumptions made in modeling the stellar populations. We also introduce SpeedyMC, a version of GalMC based on interpolation of pre-computed template libraries. While the flexibility and number of SED fitting parameters is reduced with respect to GalMC, the average running time decreases by a factor of 20,000, enabling SED fitting of each galaxy in about one second on a 2.2GHz MacBook Pro laptop, and making SpeedyMC the ideal instrument to analyze data from large photometric galaxy surveys.

One of the principal motivations of wide-field and synoptic surveys is the search for, and study of, transients. By transients I mean those sources that arise from the background, are detectable for some time, and then fade away to oblivion. Transients in distant galaxies need to be sufficiently bright as to be detectable, and in almost all cases those transients are catastrophic events, marking the deaths of stars. Exemplars include supernovæ and gamma-ray bursts. In our own Galaxy, the transients are strongly variable stars, and in almost all cases are at best cataclysmic rather than catastrophic. Exemplars include flares from M dwarfs, novæ of all sorts (dwarf novæ, recurrent novæ, classical novæ, X-ray novæ) and instabilities in the surface layers of stars such as S Dor or η Carina. In the nearby Universe (say out to the Virgo cluster) we have sufficient sensitivity to see novæ. In 1 I review the history of transients (which is intimately related to the advent of wide-field telescopic imaging). In 2 I summarize wide-field imaging projects, and I then review the motivations that led to the design of the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). Next comes a summary of the astronomical returns from PTF (3), and that is followed by lessons that I have learnt from PTF (4). I conclude that, during this decade, the study of optical transients will continue to flourish (and may even accelerate as surveys at other wavelengths—notably radio, UV and X-ray—come on-line). Furthermore, it is highly likely that there will be a proliferation of highly-specialized searches for transients. Those searches may well remain active even in the era of LSST (5). I end the article by discussing the importance of follow-up telescopes for transient object studies—a topical issue, given the Portfolio Review that is being undertaken in the US.

The aim of this work is to review and expand upon the model proposed by Father José Domingo Duquesne de la Madrid (1745–1821) regarding the calendar of the pre-Columbian Muisca culture of central Colombia. This model was dismissed by scholars in the late 19th century when it was called just a simple invention of a clergyman; however, a detailed analysis shows that his interpretation of the calendar was based on genuine ethnographic information. According to Duquesne, this calendar was based on a series of moons whose multiples are 5, 20 and 37. These multiples generate time series that can be comparable to our years (37 moons), centuries (740 moons, or 59.8 years) and millennia (14800 moons or 1196 years). According to the information provided, these long time spans can be tracked up to a period of 74000 moons (5978 years). The work of Duquesne provides us some clues about the state of timekeeping traditions in pre-Columbian societies of the Intermediate Area.

One of the handful of known PMS eclipsing binaries is a component of the spectroscopic triple TY CrA. Its secondary component is particularly interesting since it is a star of relatively high mass (1.64 M⊙) which is still on the pre-main sequence. The eclipsing binary was analyzed in the optical wavelength range ~10 years ago, however, the crucial secondary eclipse minimum is very shallow. Therefore, we are obtaining new photometry in both optical and near-IR bands. We present first observations in (BVRI) which show that the secondary eclipse depth increases to about 0.1 mag in the I band. The increased eclipse depth with respect to other bands will help to better determine the colours and dimensions of the system. Furthermore, we show and discuss first near-IR observations of the primary eclipse. In addition to the light curves we are obtaining radial velocities in order to pin down the orbital parameters of the triple. Our first observations agree with the orbital parameters derived ~10 years ago.

In this paper we review recent progress in our understanding of the chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks. Current observational constraints and theoretical modeling on the chemical composition of gas and dust in these systems are presented. Strong variations of temperature, density, high-energy radiation intensities in these disks, both radially and vertically, result in a peculiar disk chemical structure, where a variety of processes are active. In hot, dilute and heavily irradiated atmosphere only the most photostable simple radicals and atoms and atomic ions exist, formed by gas-phase processes. Beneath the atmosphere a partly UV-shielded, warm molecular layer is located, where high-energy radiation drives rich ion-molecule and radical-radical chemistry, both in the gas phase and on dust surfaces. In a cold, dense, dark disk midplane many molecules are frozen out, forming thick icy mantles where surface chemistry is active and where complex polyatomic (organic) species are synthesized. Dynamical processes affect disk chemical composition by enriching it in abundances of complex species produced via slow surface processes, which will become detectable with ALMA.

The San Pedro Mártir kinematic catalogue of galactic planetary nebulae provides spatially resolved, long-slit, Echelle spectra for about 600 planetary nebulae, representing 55 observing runs and about 4000 individual integrations to date in this first release. The project is ongoing and will continue adding spectra to the database. The data are presented wavelength calibrated and corrected for heliocentric motion. This is the most extensive and homogeneous single source of data concerning the internal kinematics of the ionized nebular material in planetary nebulae. The catalogue is available through the world wide web at http://kincatpn.astrosen.unam.mx and an article will a full description of the catalogue will soon appear in the RevMexAA.

White dwarfs grow as the cores of red giants and, in particular, carbon-oxygen white dwarfs grow in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The evolution of an AGB star is a competition between growth of the core and loss of the stellar envelope, typically in a wind. It is complicated by thermal pulses driven periodically by unstable helium shell burning. Dredge up following such pulses delays core growth. The compression at the center of a cold carbon-oxygen core means that carbon ignites when it reaches a mass of 1.38 M⊙. This begins the familiar thermonuclear runaway of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia). At higher temperatures carbon can ignite more gently and burn mostly to neon to leave a core rich in oxygen, neon and magnesium. Such cores can go on to collapse to neutron stars with a release of only neutrinos. Accepted mass-loss prescriptions for giants mean that the range of masses of single stars that leave carbon-oxygen white dwarfs is somewhere from around 1 to 8 M⊙. We investigate how unusual mass loss, perhaps brought about by interaction with a binary companion, can radically alter the single star picture. Though population syntheses treat some possibilities with various prescriptions, there is sufficient doubt over the physics, the observations, and the implementation of mass loss and binary interaction that there is scope for several more unusual progenitors of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and hence SNe Ia.

The stratosphere is the region where the ozone chemistry is important for the balance of energy, and radiation in the near UV plays a fundamental role in the creation and destruction of ozone. However, the radiation in this range of wavelength has not been very well modeled. One of the most important elements, according to its abundance in the solar atmosphere, that contribute to the emission and absorption of radiation in the spectral range between 1900 and 3900 Å, is neutral nickel (Ni I). In this work we improve the atomic model of this element, taking into account 490 lines over the spectrum. We solve these lines in NLTE using the Solar Radiation Physical Modeling (SRPM) program and compare the results with observation of the quiet sun spectrum.

The Working Group on the Natural Planetary Satellites has been created to promote the development of high-quality ephemerides. The Working Group encourages theoretical studies, coordinated observations, and makes all data available to the users through the NSDC web site (http://www.imcce.fr/nsdc).

The sources of the highest energy cosmic rays remain an enigma half a century after their discovery. Understanding their origin is a crucial step in probing new physics at energies unattainable by terrestrial accelerators. They must be accelerated in the local universe as otherwise interaction with cosmic background radiations would severely deplete the flux of protons and nuclei at energies above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) limit. Hypernovae, nearby GRBs, AGNs and their flares have all been suggested and debated in the literature as possible sources. Type Ibc supernovae have a local sub-population with mildly relativistic ejecta which are known to be sub-energetic GRBs or X-Ray Flashes for sometime and more recently as those with radio afterglows but without detected GRB counterparts, such as SN 2009bb. In this talk we present the size-magnetic field evolution, baryon loading and energetics of SN 2009bb using its radio spectra obtained with VLA and GMRT. We show that the engine-driven SNe lie above the Hillas line and they can explain the characteristics of post-GZK UHECRs.

We use a bayesian formalism to quantify the uncertainties in the determination of the luminous mass and age of the dominant stellar population in a galaxy obtained from simple spectral fits. The analysis is performed over a sample of synthetic spectra covering a wide range of star formation histories and seen at different ages and redshifts. Using the bayesian approach we can establish quantitatively the uncertainties in the parameters derived from these fits in a straightforward manner, which is not possible using some simple algorithms, e.g. GASPEX, a non-negative least-square fitting algorithm.

The solar activity cycle entered a prolonged quiet phase that started in 2008 and ended in 2010. This minimum lasted for a year longer than expected and all activity proxies, as measured from Earth and from Space, reached minimum values never observed before (de Toma, 2012). The number of spotless days from 2006 to 2009 totals 800, the largest ever recorded in modern times. Solar irradiance was at historic minimums. The interplanetary magnetic field was measured at values as low as 2.9 nT and the cosmic rays were observed at records-high. While rumors spread that the Sun could be entering a grand minimum quiet phase (such as the Maunder minimum of the XVII century), activity took over in 2010 and we are now well into Solar Cycle 24 (albeit, probably, a low intensity cycle), approaching towards a maximum due by mid 2013. In addition to bringing us the possibility to observe a quiet state of the Sun and of the Heliosphere that was previously not recorded with modern instruments, the Sun has also shown us how little we know about the dynamo mechanism that drives its activity as all solar cycle predictions failed to see this extended minimum coming.

I review our current understanding of the evolution of stars which experience carbon burning under conditions of partial electron degeneracy and ultimately become thermally pulsing “super” asymptotic giant branch (SAGB) stars with electron-degenerate cores composed primarily of oxygen and neon. The range in stellar mass over which this occurs is very narrow and the interior evolutionary characteristics vary rapidly over this range. Consequently, while those stars with larger masses (~11 M⊙) are likely to undergo electron-capture accretion induced collapse, those models with smaller masses (8.5 ≲ M/M⊙ ≲ 10.5) will presumably form massive (M ≳ 1.1 M⊙) white dwarfs. The final outcome depends sensitively on the adopted mass-loss rates, the chemical composition of the massive envelopes, and on the adopted prescription for convective mixing.

SN1987A is the best-studied core-collapse supernova in the sky. We know what the progenitor was, what the circumstellar environment was, and what the explosion looked like over a broad electromagnetic bandpass and in neutrinos. For over a decade, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been monitoring SN1987A on a regular basis, obtaining resolved images of the developing interaction with the circumstellar material, as well as high resolution grating spectroscopy of the X-ray emission. We highlight the latest results from this campaign and discuss the overall picture of the remnant's structure that emerges from these observations.

Until recently, the venerable field of cosmic explosions has been plagued with a glaring six-magnitude luminosity gap between the brightest novæ and the faintest supernovæ. A key science driver of the Palomar Transient Factory was a systematic search for optical transients that are fainter, faster and rarer than supernovæ. Theorists predict a variety of mechanisms to produce transients in that “gap”, and observers have the best chance of finding them in the local universe. The talk presented the discoveries and the unique physics of cosmic explosions which bridge that gap between novæ and supernovæ. As Fig. 1 illustrates, there is now evidence of multiple, distinct populations of rare transients in the “gap”.

In 2007 a group was formed to study ‘Archaeoastronomy of Malargüe’. Its main objective is to contribute to the understanding of rock art records from the study of their variability, in order to understand their functionality in the context of regional archaeological problems. The research is addressed using an interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological model, focusing on the characteristics of the site and location of the engravings, their relationship with the landscape, and the identification of possible representations of astronomical objects. In this paper, we discuss some of the theoretical and methodological tools we have used for the fieldwork and analysis, using as our case study work at the rock art sites of Agua Botada, Valle Hermoso, and Los Toscales del Payén in the south of Mendoza, Argentina.

We present preliminary reconstructions of the EUV from 26 to 34 nm from February 1997 to May 2005, covering most of solar cycle 23. The reconstruction is based on synthetic EUV spectra calculated with the spectral synthesis code Solar Modeling in 3D (SolMod3D). These spectra are weighted by the relative area coverage of the coronal features as identified from EIT images. The calculations are based on one-dimensional atmospheric structures that represent a temporal and spatial mean of the chromosphere, transition region, and corona. The employed segmentation analysis considers coronal holes, the quiet corona, and active regions identified on the solar disk. The reconstructed EUV irradiance shows a good agreement with observations taken with the CELIAS/SEM instrument onboard SOHO. Further improvement of the reconstruction including more solar features as well as the off-limb detection of activity features will be addressed in the near future.

There remain many fundamental unanswered questions about protoplanetary disks, including how (and if?) they form planets, how mass is transferred through the disk and onto the star, and how they ultimately disperse. Also, a major goal of protoplanetary disk studies is to understand the relationship between disk properties and the physical and chemical properties of planetary systems. IR molecular spectroscopy is a particularly powerful tool for probing the conditions and physical process in protoplanetary disks, which are too small and close to their parent stars to be imaged with ease. I will discuss the suite of infrared molecular transitions observed to date, which highlight the following three techniques of IR spectroscopy. Firstly, line shapes and strengths can be used as tracers of disk physics, including volatile condensation/evaporation, photo-processes, grain growth and turbulence. Secondly, observations of multiple molecular abundances provide constraints for disk chemical models, which may ultimately help explain the great diversity of planetary bodies. Finally, resolved line shapes and spectro-astrometry provide a means to study disk structure on extremely small size scales. Because IR observations are typically sensitive to radii of a few AU or smaller, the processes and structures being probed are relevant to the birth and growth of terrestrial and giant planets. Recent results that I will highlight include the discovery of a multitude of molecules in disks around sun-like stars (including H2O, OH, HCN, C2H2 and CO2), with detection rates that depend on stellar mass, constraints on gas mass and location in transitional disks, detection and characterization of ‘snow lines’, measurements of inner disk rims, and detections of inner disk asymmetries. I will also discuss how IR spectroscopy will remain relevant even with the emergence of facilities such as ALMA, as it allows us to connect the conditions in terrestrial-planet-forming regions with those in the cold outer reaches of disks, and to better construct a comprehensive understanding of the nature of protoplanetary disks.

We report spectrophotometric observations made with SOFIA/FORCAST on 2011 June 2 UT. Optical measurements have previously shown that the abundance discrepancy factor (adf) varies with position in several high-adf PNe, and is highest close to the central star. The very low electron temperature inclusions postulated to explain the abundance discrepancy, must be cooled predominantly by fine structure IR lines. These SOFIA data will map mid-IR FS lines (and our related Herschel program will add several far-IR FS lines) in the bright, well-characterized, high-adf PN NGC 7009. We will compare these IR results with FS optical line measurements in order to correlate ratios of IR to optical fluxes with position, and thus correlate with where the adf peaks.

This paper presents the results of verification of known stars showing evidence of orbital eccentricity and apsidal motion.
