The LITTLE THINGS project† has compiled multi-wavelength data (including VLA hi-line emission maps, GALEX FUV/NUV imagery, UBV, narrow-band Hα, and Spitzer images) for a representative sample of nearby dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies. The broadband data are used to constrain the radial variations of the star formation (SF) rate (SFR) averaged over the past 0.1 Gyr, 1 Gyr and a Hubble time, with a complete library of model SF histories (SFHs). The recent SF of more than ~ 80% of the dIrrs in our sample has been concentrated in the inner disk, and the SF in the outer disk has been markedly suppressed. This outside-in shrinking of the star-forming disk leaves a down-bending (double exponential) stellar mass surface density (Σ*) distribution. Our findings in dIrrs are in contrast to the inside-out disk growth scenario suggested for luminous spiral galaxies.

Explicit expressions for the differential operator of stationary quasi-monochromatic polarized radiative transfer equation in Euclidean space with piecewise homogeneous real part of the effective refractive index are obtained in circular cylindrical, prolate spheroidal, elliptic conical, classic toroidal and simple toroidal coordinate system.

Wise mapped the entire sky in four bands during its approximately 7-month cryogenic mission. The number of exposures for each point on the sky increased with ecliptic latitude, and ranged from ~12 on the ecliptic to over 1000 at the ecliptic poles. The observing cadence is well suited to studying variable objects with periods between ~2 hours to ~2 days on the ecliptic, with the maximum period increasing up to several weeks near the ecliptic poles. We present the method used to identify several types of variables in the Wise Preliminary Release Database, and the mid-IR light curves of several objects. Many of these objects are new, and include RR Lyr, Algol, W UMa, Mira, BL Lac and YSO-type variables, as well as some unknown objects.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) generate an afterglow with an emission peaking in the millimetre and submillimeter (mm/submm) range during the first hours to days, making the study in these wavelengths of great importance. Here we give an overview of the data that has been collected for GRB observations in this wavelengths until September 2011. The total sample includes 102 GRBs, of which 88 have afterglow observations, and the rest are only host galaxy searches. The 22 detections cover the redshift range between 0.168 and 8.2 and have peak luminosities that span 2.5 orders of magnitude. With the start of the operations at ALMA, the sensitivity with respect to previous facilities has already improved by over an order of magnitude. We estimate that, once completed, ALMA will be able to detect ~98 % of the afterglows.

We have used the SuperCOSMOS Hα Survey to look for faint outer structures such as halos, ansae and jets around known planetary nebulae across 4000 square degrees of the southern Milky Way. Our search will contribute to a more accurate census of these features in the Galactic PN population. Candidate common-envelope PNe have also been identified on the basis of their microstructures. We also intend to determine more reliable distances for these PNe, which should allow a much better statistical basis for the post-AGB total mass budget. Our survey offers fresh scope to address this important issue.

Stellar bars are important structures for the internal secular evolution of galaxies. They can drive gas into the central region of galaxies, and result in an enhancement of star formation activity there. Previous studies are limited in the comparisons between barred and unbarred galaxies. Here we try to investigate the connection between star formation activities and different bars, based on multi-wavelength data in a sample of barred spirals. We find that there is no clearly trend of the surface star formation rates in different structures along the bar strength. In addition, there is larger scatter for the properties of star formation activity in the galaxies with middle-strength bars, which may indicate that a variety of star formation stages are more likely associated with these bars.

The RV analysis tool integrates widely used methods of radial velocity determination (CCF, TODCOR, BF) in an easy to use graphical environment. No advanced knowledge of these methods is required to use it. The obtained velocities may be immediately analyzed with the same tool as it comprises flexible fitting of orbital parameters, which includes the third body influence and pulsational velocities of the components. These features together help to establish the most accurate combination of templates, spectrum range, and method. Scripting functionality is to be implemented in the future.

We present early time (~0-50 days) bolometric light curves of UV-bright Core Collapse Supernovae observed with the Swift UV/Optical Telescope. We also generate pseudo-bolometric light curves from Swift UV and optical data and examine these by subtype as well as the observed and interpolated UV and IR flux contributions by epoch and bolometric corrections at early times from UV data.

We present preliminary results obtained from the analysis of very deep echelle spectra of a dozen planetary nebulae with [WC] or weak emission lines (wels) central stars. The computed abundance discrepancy factors (ADFs) are moderate, with values lower than 4. In principle, no evidence of the H-poor metal enriched inclusions proposed by Liu et al. (2000) have been found. However, a detailed analysis of the data is in progress.

We present a new observational project to study the hierarchical triple stellar system Algol, concentrating on the semidetached eclipsing binary at the heart of the system. Over 140 high-resolution and high-S/N spectra have been secured, of which 80 are from FIES at the Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma, and the remainder were obtained with BOES at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. All three components were successfully detected by the method of spectral disentangling, which yields the individual spectra of the three stars and also high-quality spectroscopic elements for both the inner and outer orbits. We present a detailed abundance study for the mass-accreting component in the inner orbit, which holds information on the history of mass transfer in the close inner binary system. We also reveal the atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of the tertiary component in the outer orbit.

Present and past gas-fuelling of galaxies is expected to depend upon both the properties of the galaxies themselves, as well as their larger-scale environments. In the case of galaxies in groups the environment, i.e the group mass, can be probed by measuring the velocity dispersion of the group members, as done with the GAMA Galaxy Group catalogue (Robotham et al. 2011), probing the halo mass function all the way to small groups. The gas-fuelling rate of normal late-type galaxies can be traced by the SFR under the assumption of a steady state between gas-fuelling and gas-consumption by SF. We present a method to estimate disk opacities from UV/optical photometric characteristics, calibrated using the radiative transfer model of Popescu et al. (2011), applied to UV-Opt-FIR GAMA/H-ATLAS photometry for a subset of GAMA galaxies. We use the method to extract attenuation corrected SFRs for a large sample of late-type GAMA galaxies, which we use in an initial application to constrain the dependency of star formation/gas-fuelling in late-type galaxies on mass of parent DMH, and compactness of galaxy group.

The cooling rate of young neutron stars gives direct insight into their internal makeup. Using Chandra observations of the 330-year-old Cassiopeia A supernova remnant, we find that the temperature of the youngest-known neutron star in the Galaxy has declined by 4% over the last 10 years. The decline is explained naturally by superconductivity and superfluidity of the protons and neutrons in the stellar core. The protons became superconducting early in the life of the star and suppressed the early cooling rate; the neutron star thus remained hot before the (recent) onset of neutron superfluidity. Once the neutrons became superfluid, the Cooper pair-formation process produced a splash of neutrino emission which accelerated the cooling and resulted in the observed rapid temperature decline. This is the first time a young neutron star has been seen to cool in real time, and is the first direct evidence, from cooling observations, of superfluidity and superconductivity in the core of neutron stars.

The 3-D and kinematic structure of the Eskimo nebula, NGC 2392, has been notoriously difficult to interpret given its complex morphology, multiple kinematic components and its nearly pole-on orientation along the line of sight. Here we present the most comprehensive high resolution spectroscopic mapping of the Eskimo planetary nebula to date. The data consist of 21 spatially resolved, long-slit echelle spectra tightly spaced over the Eskimo and along its bipolar jets. This data set allowed us to construct a velocity-resolved [NII] channel map of the nebula with a resolution of 10 km/s that disentagles the differente kinematic components of the nebula and reveals clearly for the first time the kinematic expansion pattern for each of the components. The spectroscopic information is combined with a HST image to construct the first detailed three dimensional model of the Eskimo with the code SHAPE. With this model we demostrate that the Eskimo is nearly a twin to the Saturn nebula, but rotated 90° to the line sight. Furthermore, we show that the main characteristics of our model apply to the general properties of the group of elliptical planetary nebulae with ansae, once the orientation is considered.

With the goal of constructing Star-Formation Rates (SFR) from AKARI Infrared Camera (IRC) data, we analyzed an IR-selected GALEX-SDSS-2MASS-AKARI(IRC & Far-Infrared Surveyor) sample of 153 nearby galaxies. The far-infrared fluxes were obtained from AKARI diffuse maps to correct the underestimation for extended sources raised by PSF photometry. SFRs of these galaxies were derived using the SED fitting program CIGALE. In spite of complicated features contained in these bands, both the S9W and L18W emissions correlate with the SFR of galaxies. The SFR calibrations using S9W and L18W are presented for the first time. These calibrations agree well with previous work based on Spitzer data within the scatter, and should be applicable to dust-rich galaxies.

Infinity is a new program for modeling binary systems. The model is based on Roche geometry with asynchronous rotation, including an assortment of effects like gravity and limb darkening, mutual irradiation, bright and dark spots and so on. However, Infinity brings innovations in the modeling of accretion disks, and introduces the modeling of radial and non-radial oscillations on one or both components of the system.

At this stage of development, Infinity can produce light curves, spectra and radial velocity curves; solving the inverse problem is still a work in progress. In terms of programming, Infinity is being developed in the object-oriented language C#, and great care is taken to produce readable, easily extensible and verifiable code. Infinity is fully optimized to take advantage of modern multi-core CPUs, and the code is thoroughly covered with unit-tests. We expect to make a public release during 2012.

Several claims have been put forward that an essential fraction of long-duration BATSE gamma-ray bursts should lie at redshifts larger than 5. This point-of-view follows from the natural assumption that fainter objects should, on average, lie at larger redshifts. However, redshifts larger than 5 are rare for bursts observed by Swift. The purpose of this article is to show that the most distant bursts in general need not be the faintest ones. We derive the cosmological relationships between the observed and emitted quantities, and arrive at a prediction that is tested on the ensembles of BATSE, Swift and Fermi bursts. This analysis is independent on the assumed cosmology, on the observational biases, as well as on any gamma-ray burst model. We arrive to the conclusion that apparently fainter bursts need not, in general, lie at large redshifts. Such a behaviour is possible, when the luminosities (or emitted energies) in a sample of bursts increase more than the dimming of the observed values with redshift. In such a case dP(z)/dz > 0 can hold, where P(z) is either the peak-flux or the fluence. This also means that the hundreds of faint, long-duration BATSE bursts need not lie at high redshifts, and that the observed redshift distribution of long Swift bursts might actually represent the actual distribution.

The detection of fast (< 1 second) transient signals requires a challenging balance between the need to examine vast quantities of high time-resolution data and the impracticality of storing all the data for later analysis. This is the epitome of a “big data” issue—far more data will be produced by next generation-astronomy facilities than can be analyzed, distributed, or archived using traditional methods. JPL is developing technologies to deal with “big data” problems from initial data generation through real-time data triage algorithms to large-scale data archiving and mining. Although most current work is focused on the needs of large radio arrays, the technologies involved are widely applicable in other areas.

Cosmic rays fill up the entire volume of galaxies, providing an important source of heating and ionisation of the interstellar medium, and may play a significant role in the regulation of star formation and galactic evolution. Diffuse emissions from radio to high-energy γ-rays (>100 MeV) arising from various interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium, interstellar radiation field, and magnetic field, are currently the best way to trace the intensities and spectra of cosmic rays in the Milky Way and other galaxies. In this contribution, I describe our recent work to model the full spectral energy distribution of galaxies like the Milky Way from radio to γ-ray energies. The application to other galaxies, in particular the Magellanic Clouds and M31 that are now resolved in high-energy γ-rays by the Fermi-LAT, is also discussed.

The Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 is the nearest starburst galaxy (at 725 kpc) and presents extended and complex HI kinematics. It is believed that IC 10 is still experiencing an intense and very recent burst of star formation, likely triggered by infalling gas from an extended envelope which is counter-rotating with respect to the galaxy proper rotation. In this contribution we summarize our preliminary results (Gonçalves et al. 2011, in prep.) obtained by performing a kinematic analysis of the PN population of IC 10. Our aim is to explore the kinematic connection of its intermediate to old stellar populations with that obtained from HI observations. Some PNe were found at large galactocentric distances and could therefore represent a trace of past tidal interactions.

We review the results of very early phase optical follow-up observations of recent gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with the multi-color optical telescopes “MITSuME”. The MITSuME telescopes were designed to perform “real time” and “automatic” follow-up observations prompted by the GCN alerts via the Internet. The rapidly slewing equatorial mounts allow MITSuME to start photometric observations within 100 seconds after the trigger for several GRBs. In particular, we detected a brightening just after the trigger for two GRBs. These phenomena could be interpreted as the “on-set” of afterglow. In this paper we summarize these optical observations with a brief interpretation.
