The first “light echo”—scattered light from a stellar outburst arriving at the Earth months or years after the direct light from the event—was detected more than 100 years ago, around Nova Persei 1901. Renewed interest in light echoes has come from the spectacular echo around V838 Monocerotis, and from discoveries of light echoes from historical and prehistorical supernovæ in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud as well as from the 19th-century Great Eruption of η Carinae. A related technique is reverberation mapping of active galactic nuclei. This report of a workshop on Light Echoes gives an introduction to light echoes, and summarizes presentations on discoveries of light echoes from historical and prehistorical events, light and shadow echoes around R CrB stars, and reverberation mapping.

Progress in a number of technical areas is enabling imaging and interferometric observations at both smaller angular separations from bright stars and at deeper relative contrast levels. Here we discuss recent progress in several ongoing projects at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. First, extreme adaptive optics wavefront correction has recently enabled the use of very short (i.e., blue) wavelengths to resolve close binaries. Second, phase-based coronagraphy has recently allowed observations of faint companions to within nearly one diffraction beam width of bright stars. Finally, rotating interferometers that can observe inside the diffraction beam of single aperture telescopes are being developed to detect close-in companions and bright exozodiacal dust. This paper presents a very brief summary of the techniques involved, along with some illustrative results.

We present a new model for the infrared emission of the high redshift hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS F10214+4724 which takes into account recent photometric data from Spitzer and Herschel that sample the peak of its spectral energy distribution. We first demonstrate that the combination of the AGN tapered disc and starburst models of Efstathiou and coworkers, while able to give an excellent fit to the average spectrum of type 2 AGN measured by Spitzer, fails to match the spectral energy distribution of IRAS F10214+4724. This is mainly due to the fact that the ν Sν distribution of the galaxy falls very steeply with increasing frequency (a characteristic of heavy absorption by dust) but shows a silicate feature in emission. We propose a model that assumes two components of emission: clouds that are associated with the narrow-line region and a highly obscured starburst. The emission from the clouds must suffer significantly stronger gravitational lensing compared to the emission from the torus to explain the observed spectral energy distribution.

Using the reconstructed imaging data obtained with the Infrared Camera (IRC) on board AKARI, mid-infrared (MIR; 5-30 μm) emission characteristics of the superwind galaxy M82 are studied. The MIR images at four wavelengths (7, 11, 15, and 24 μm) show extended (out to distances of 4 kpc) emission mainly from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The MIR SED of M82 halo is surprisingly constant. Using far-infrared imaging data obtained by Herschel/SPIRE, we reveal that the PAH abundance relative to the big (sub-micron sized) grains radially increases by about a factor of three. These results imply that PAHs may be formed in small and dense molecular clumps in the halo and efficiently supplied to the intergalactic space by the galactic superwind.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are unique probes of the first generation (Pop III) stars. We show that a relativistic gamma-ray burst (GRB) jet can potentially pierce the envelope of a very massive Pop III star even if the Pop III star has a supergiant hydrogen envelope without mass loss, thanks to the long-lived powerful accretion of the envelope itself. While the Pop III GRB is estimated to be energetic (Eγ,iso ~ 1055 erg), the supergiant envelope hides the initial bright phase in the cocoon component, leading to a GRB with a long duration ~1000 (1 + z) s and an ordinary isotropic luminosity ~ 1052 erg s−1 (~ 10−9 erg cm−2 s−1 at redshift z ~ 20), although these quantities are found to be sensitive to the core and envelope mass. We also show that Pop III.2 GRBs (which are primordial but affected by radiation from other stars) occur >100 times more frequently than Pop III.1 GRBs, and thus should be suitable targets for future X-ray and radio missions. The radio transient surveys are already constraining the Pop III GRB rate and promising in the future.

NGC 5128 at 3.8 Mpc is the nearest large elliptical galaxy and is ideally suited to a detailed study of its planetary nebula population. Two spectroscopic programmes are summarised. More than 1200 PNe candidates are known from imaging campaigns in NGC 5128 and accurate radial velocities of 1070 have been measured with the VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrometer. From these data a variety of studies of the galaxy kinematics are enabled, such as search for PN sub-groups, representing the relics of accretion of small galaxies. Emission line spectra were observed with VLT FORS and the light element abundances determined for 40 PNe through photoionization modelling. A spread in O abundance of about 0.9 dex is found but no obvious radial gradient out to 19 kpc. Comparison of the O abundance from these PN with the metallicity for the stellar population in the neighbourhood of the PN will probe the star formation and enrichment history of the galaxy. Full results from this analysis will be presented in a forthcoming paper.

We explore the importance of meridional circulation variations in modelling the irregularities of the solar cycle by using the flux transport dynamo model. We show that a fluctuating meridional circulation can reproduce some features of the solar cycle like the Waldmeier effect and the grand minimum. However, we get all these results only if the value of the turbulent diffusivity in the convection zone is reasonably high.

Three-dimensional Doppler tomography of interacting binaries has now provided some interesting perspectives of the gas flows beyond the central plane corresponding to the orbital plane. These images suggest that the magnetic field of the mass losing star influences the gas flows in some cases. Earlier 2D tomograms displayed evidence of gas flows associated with the gas stream, accretion disks, accretion annuli, and hot spots as well as evidence of magnetic flows associated with the mass loser. These indirect images have revealed the active environments that exist in the slow-mass-transfer Algols, cataclysmic variables, polars, x-ray binaries, and gamma ray binaries.

Just as the astronomical “Time Domain” is a catch-phrase for a diverse group of different science objectives involving time-varying phenomena in all astrophysical régimes from the solar system to cosmological scales, so the “Virtual Observatory” is a complex set of community-wide activities from archives to astroinformatics. This workshop touched on some aspects of adapting and developing those semantic and network technologies in order to address transient and time-domain research challenges. It discussed the VOEvent format for representing alerts and reports on celestial transient events, the SkyAlert and ATELstream facilities for distributing these alerts, and the IVOA time-series protocol and time-series tools provided by the VAO. Those tools and infrastructure are available today to address the real-world needs of astronomers.

The Galactic population of close white dwarf binaries is expected to provide the largest number of gravitational wave sources for low frequency detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Current data analysis techniques have demonstrated the capability of resolving on the order of 104 white dwarf binaries from a 2 year observation. Resolved binaries are either at high frequencies or large amplitudes. Such systems are more likely to be high-mass binaries, a subset of which will be progenitors of SNe Ia in the double degenerate scenario. We report on results of a study of the properties of resolved binaries using a population synthesis model of the Galactic white dwarf binaries and a LISA data analysis algorithm using Mock LISA Data Challenge tools.

Polarimetry is a useful diagnostic of asymmetries in both circumstellar environments and binary star systems. Its sensitivity to asymmetries in systems means that it can help to uncover details about system orbital parameters, including providing information about the orbital inclination. Polarimetry can probe the circumstellar and/or circumbinary material as well. A number of significant results on binary systems have been produced by polarimetric studies. One might therefore expect that polarimetry could similarly play a useful role in studies of exoplanets, and a number of possible diagnostics for exoplanets have been proposed. However, the application of polarimetry to exoplanet research is only in preliminary stages, and the difficulties with applying the technique to exoplanets are non-trivial. This review will discuss the successes of polarimetry in analyzing binary systems, and consider the possibilities and challenges for extending similar analysis to exoplanet systems.

We describe the results of our numerical simulations of the collapse of a massive stellar core to a BH, performed in the framework of full general relativity incorporating finite-temperature equation of state and neutrino cooling. We adopt a 100 M⊙ presupernova model calculated by Umeda & Nomoto (2008), which has a massive core with a high value of entropy per baryon. Changing the degree of rotation for the initial condition, we clarify the dependence of the outcome on this. When the rotation is rapid enough, the shock wave formed at the core bounce is deformed to be a torus-like shape. Then, the infalling matter is accumulated in the central region due to the oblique shock at the torus surface, hitting the hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) and dissipating the kinetic energy there. As a result, outflows can be launched. The HMNS eventually collapses to a BH and an accretion torus is formed around it. We also found that the evolution of the BH and torus depends strongly on the rotation initially given.

We use photoionization modeling to assess the binary nature of the central stars of NGC 2392 and NGC 6026. If they are close binaries, they are potential Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) progenitors if the total mass exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit. We show that the nucleus of NGC 2392 likely has a hot, massive (≃1 M⊙) white dwarf companion, and a total mass of ~1.6 M⊙, making it an especially interesting system. The binary mass in NGC 6026 is less, ~1.1 M⊙. Even though its orbital period is short, it is not considered to be an SNe~Ia progenitor.

In this review we discuss the occurrence and statistical properties of Grand minima based on the available data covering the last millennia. In particular, we consider the historical record of sunspot numbers covering the last 400 years as well as records of cosmogenic isotopes in natural terrestrial archives, used to reconstruct solar activity for up to the last 11.5 millennia, i.e. throughout the Holocene. Using a reconstruction of solar activity from cosmogenic isotope data, we analyze statistics of the occurrence of Grand minima. We find that: the Sun spends about most of the time at moderate activity, 1/6 in a Grand minimum and some time also in a Grand maximum state; Occurrence of Grand minima is not a result of long-term cyclic variations but is defined by stochastic/chaotic processes; There is a tendency for Grand minima to cluster with the recurrence rate of roughly 2000-3000 years, with a weak ≈210-yr periodicity existing within the clusters. Grand minima occur of two different types: shorter than 100 years (Maunder-type) and long ≈150 years (Spörer-type). It is also discussed that solar cycles (most possibly not sunspots cycle) could exist during the Grand minima, perhaps with stretched length and asymmetric sunspot latitudinal distribution.

These results set new observational constraints on long-term solar and stellar dynamo models.

Thanks to SAURON integral-field observations we uncovered the planetary nebulae (PNe) populations inhabiting the central and nuclear regions of our galactic neighbours M32 and M31, respectively, and discuss the significant differences between their corresponding PNe luminosity functions in light of the properties of their parent stellar populations. In particular, we conclude that the lack of bright PNe in the nuclear regions of M31 is likely linked to the nearly Solar value for the stellar metallicity, consistent with previous suggestions that a larger metallicity would bias the horizontal-branch (HB) populations toward bluer colors, leading to fewer red HB stars capable of producing PNe and more blue HB stars that instead could contribute to the far-UV flux observed in metal-rich early-type galaxies and, incidentally, in the nucleus of M31.

HIZOA J0836–43 is one of the most H i-massive galaxies in the local (z < 0.1) Universe. Not only are such galaxies extremely rare, but this “coelacanth” galaxy exhibits characteristics – in particular its active, inside-out stellar disk-building – that appear more typical of past (z ~ 1) star formation, when large gas fractions were more common. Unlike most local giant H i galaxies, it is actively star forming. Moreover, the strong infrared emission is not induced by a merger event or AGN, as is commonly found in other local LIRGs. The galaxy is suggestive of a scaled-up version of local spiral galaxies; its extended star formation activity likely being fueled by its large gas reservoir and, as such, can aid our understanding of star formation in systems expected to dominate at higher redshifts. The multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic observations that have led to these deductions will be presented. These include NIR (JHK) and MIR (Spitzer; 3 – 24μm) imaging and photometry, MIR spectroscopy, ATCA H i-interferometry and Mopra CO line emission observations. But no optical data, as the galaxy is heavily obscured due to its location in Vela behind the Milky Way.

Astrotomography refers to a suite of indirect imaging techniques that achieve micro-arcsecond angular resolution by measuring projections obtained from time-resolved spectroscopic observations. The projections arise from Doppler shifts, eclipses or time delays, combined with rotation of the star or binary system being imaged. At our workshop we reviewed and discussed state-of-the-art methods for imaging the surfaces and magnetic fields of rapidly rotating stars, the accretion flows in compact binary star systems and the broad emission-line regions in active galactic nuclei.

IAU Commission 5 (http://www.nao.ac.jp/IAU/Com5/) deals with data management issues, and its working groups and task group deal specifically with information handling, with data centers and networks, with technical aspects of collection, archiving, storage and dissemination of data, with designations and classification of astronomical objects, with library services, editorial policies, computer communications, ad hoc methodologies, and with various standards, reference frames, etc. FITS (Flexible Image Transport System), the major data exchange format in astronomy, has been standardized, maintained and updated by the FITS working group under Commission 5.

As earlier, the main activity of the Commission was performed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT), effectively directed by Dan Green. These three years were a difficult period for the Bureau and thus for the Commission because the Bureau unexpectedly had to move from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, its home since 1965, to the Harvard University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. This move caused many serious administrative and logistical problems, effectively solved by the CBAT Director, Dan Green, and CBAT Director Emeritus, Brian Marsden. A great shock, not only for our commission but for the whole astronomical community, was Brian's death on November 18, 2010.
