We present the first measurement of the correlation between the map of the CMB lensing potential derived from the Planck nominal mission data and z ≳ 1.5 galaxies detected by Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) survey covering about 550 deg2. We detect the cross-power spectrum with a significance of ∼ 8.5σ, ruling out the absence of correlation at 9σ. We check detection with a number of null tests. The amplitude of cross-correlation and the galaxy bias are estimated using joint analysis of the cross-power spectrum and the galaxy survey auto-spectrum, which allows to break degeneracy between these parameters. The estimated galaxy bias is consistent with previous estimates of the bias for the H-ATLAS data, while the cross-correlation amplitude is higher than expected for a ΛCDM model. The content of this work is to appear in a forthcoming paper Bianchini, et al. (2014).

In 2010, we organised a workshop in Tenerife with the aim of bringing together scientists concerned with the completeness and accuracy of atomic data for astrophysical applications. Participants included atomic physicists, theoretical astrophysicists and astronomers, and the workshop covered topics such as the evaluation of uncertainties in atomic data, the propagation of such uncertainties in chemical abundances, and the feedback between observations and calculations. Communication issues were also discussed, including questions such as: How can it be ensured that atomic data are correctly understood and used? Which forum is the best one for a fluid interaction between all communities involved in the production and use of atomic data? This contribution lays out the main issues raised during the workshop and some of the solutions proposed.

Most solar eruptions occur above strong photospheric magnetic polarity inversion lines (PILs). What overlays a PIL is unknown, however, and this has led to a debate over the existence of sheared magnetic arcades vs. helical magnetic flux ropes. We argue that this debate may be of little meaning: numerous small-scale magnetic reconnections, constantly triggered in the PIL area, can lead to effective transformation of mutual to self magnetic helicity (i.e. twist and writhe) that, ultimately, may force the magnetic structure above PILs to erupt to be relieved from its excess helicity. This is preliminary report of work currently in progress.

We present a catalog of millions of radio sources, created by consolidating large-area radio and optical surveys GB6 (6cm), FIRST (20cm), NVSS (20cm), WENSS (92cm), VLSS (4m), and SDSS DR9 (optical). The region where all surveys overlap covers 3269 deg2 in the North Galactic Cap, and contains >160,000 20-cm sources, with about 12,000 detected in all five radio surveys and over one-third detected optically. Combining parameters from the sky surveys allows easy and efficient classification by radio and optical morphology and radio spectral index. Observations show that expanding H ii regions may trigger star formation. We discuss several aspects of this type of star formation, and try to estimate its prevalence. We show how LMC H ii regions may help us to understand what we see in our Galaxy.

For our understanding of the origin and evolution of baryonic matter in the Universe, the Protosolar Cloud (PSC) is of unique importance in two ways: 1) Up to now, many of the naturally occurring nuclides have only been detected in the solar system. 2) Since the time of solar system formation, the Sun and planets have been virtually isolated from the galactic nuclear evolution, and thus the PSC is a galactic sample with a degree of evolution intermediate between the Big Bang and the present.

The abundances of the isotopes of hydrogen and helium in the Protosolar Cloud are primarily derived from composition measurements in the solar wind, the Jovian atmosphere and “planetary noble gases” in meteorites, and also from observations of density profiles inside the Sun. After applying the changes in isotopic and elemental composition resulting from processes in the solar wind, the Sun and Jupiter, PSC abundances of the four lightest stable nuclides are given.

The possibility of a polarization sounding of the pulsar magnetosphere is examined, using intrinsic pulsar emission as a probe signal, for modern radio telescopes operating in the meter and decameter wavelength range. Different models of the pulsar magnetosphere at altitudes higher than a radius of critical polarization are used. The propagation medium besides magnetosphere is described by the stratified model, in which each layer has its own density of free electrons and vector of magnetic induction, as well as the spatial and temporal fluctuation scales of these parameters.

The frequency dependence of the polarization parameters of the pulsar radio emission, obtained in the broad band for a selected pulse phase, will enable a sounding deep into the pulsar magnetosphere.

The ability to differentiate abiotic organic material from material of a biological origin is a critical task for astrobiology. Mass spectrometry and spectroscopy provide key tools for advancing this task and are two techniques that provide useful and highly complementary compositional information independent of a specific biochemical pathway. Here we address some of the utility and limitations of applying these techniques to both orbital and in situ exploration of icy moons of the outer solar system.

We apply results from FUV and X-ray spectroscopy to evaluate the role of photoevaporation in dispersing the disk around TW Hya. Accretion produces bright EUV emission that may be smothered by the accretion column. Solar-like magnetic activity produces fewer ionizing photons, which may be absorbed by an accretion-powered neutral wind. We estimate a photoevaporation rate of ∼ 5 × 10−11M⊙ yr−1 for the disk around TW Hya. These models can be tested by detecting gas in the ionized disk surface, including emission in the [Ne II] 12.8μm line. Photoevaporation is likely a minor process in disk dispersal during the accretion phase, but could remove ∼ 1 MJ of remnant gas around a solar-mass star after accretion ceases.

Dynamical mass estimates of ultra-compact dwarfs galaxies and massive globular clusters in the Fornax and Virgo clusters and around the giant elliptical Cen A have revealed some surprising results: 1) above ~106M⊙ the mass-to-light (M/L) ratio increases with the objects' mass; 2) some UCDs/massive GCs show high M/L values (4 to 6) that are not compatible with standard stellar population models; and 3) in the luminosity-velocity dispersion diagram, UCDs deviate from the well-defined relation of “normal” GCs, being more in line with the Faber-Jackson relation of early-type galaxies. In this contribution, we present the observational evidences for high mass-to-light ratios of UCDs and discuss possible explanations for them.

The orbits of the planets as represented by the JPL planetary ephemerides are now primarily determined by radio tracking of spacecraft. Analysis of the data and propagation of the orbits relies on an internally consistent set of equations of motion and propagation of radio signals including relativistic effects at the centimeter level. The planetary ephemeris data set can be used to test some aspects of the underlying theory such as estimates of PPN parameters γ and β, time variation in the gravitational constant G, rotation of the solar system relative to distant objects (Mach's principle), and place stringent limits on the possible violation of the inverse-square law.

Recent calculations of evolutionary tracks of TP-AGB stars of different mass and metallicity by Marigo et al. (2007) have been incorporated in the Bruzual & Charlot evolutionary population synthesis models. The mass of the stellar population in HUDF galaxies at z from 1 to 3 determined from fits to the spectro-photometric data of these galaxies is 50 to 80% lower than the mass determined from the BC03 models. The ages inferred for these populations are, with exceptions, 40 to 60% of the BC03 estimates.

The identification and masses of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae are discussed. The masses are shown to be uncertain and should not be directly compared to values for galactic planetaries.

The kinematics suggest that the planetary nebulae belong to a younger rather than an older population. Abundance analyses show the Magellanic Cloud planetaries to be deficient in most elements, but the abundances of helium and carbon are comparable to values found for galactic planetaries.

Assessment of the impact of recent improvements in Deep Space Network (DSN) instrumentation, as well as of joint data analyses, provide a prognosis for the accuracy level to be expected in future realizations of an inertial radio reference frame. Intercontinental dual-frequency radio interferometric measurements during 68 sessions (including two recent sessions employing Mark III instrumentation) from 1978 to 1989 using NASA's DSN stations in California, Spain, and Australia give 8900 pairs of delay and delay rate observations. Analysis yields a catalog of positions of 200 extragalactic radio sources north of —45° declination. The resulting source position formal uncertainty distributions peak below 1 milliarcsecond, with three fourths being smaller than 2 mas. Comparison with independent measurements shows some evidence for systematic errors at the milliarcsecond level.

Populations of young star clusters show significant differences even among “normal” disk galaxies. In this contribution I discuss how properties of young cluster systems are related to those of their host galaxies, based on a recent study of clusters in a sample of 22 nearby spiral galaxies. Luminous young clusters similar to the “super” star clusters observed in starbursts and mergers exist in several of these galaxies, and it is found that the luminosity of the brightest star cluster as well as the specific luminosity of the cluster systems both correlate well with the host galaxy star formation rate. When considering star clusters in different environments the traditional distinction between “open”, “massive” and “globular” clusters breaks down, underscoring the need for a universal physical description of cluster formation.

The dependence of the signal to noise ratio on the exposure parameters in speckle interferometry is analysed. The choice of the optimum exposure parameters, which are found to depend on certain statistical functions of the image intensity, is discussed. Preliminary results of measurements of these statistical functions are given.

Rotational accelerations of the Earth arise from changes in speed of rotation: periodic, irregular, and secular. Changes are caused by winds, Earth tides, ocean tides, and motions of the core. The semimonthly lunar body tide produces the maximum acceleration.

Lorsqu’une galaxie compacte et massive se situe entre un observateur O et une source de lumière S, il se peut que par déflection gravitationnelle, la lumiére suive différents trajets de durées différentes pour parvenir à l’observateur. Si la source est variable il est possible de mesurer la différence de temps Δt entre les durées des trajets. Cela nous donne la possibilité de déterminer les distances cosmologiques d’une façon purement géométrique. Les probléms liés à la distribution inconnue des masses et les possibilités observationnelles sont discutés.

We present observations of the old nova HZ Pup (Nova Pup 1963 No. 1) showing it to be an intermediate polar with an exceptionally rich selection of photometric periodicities arising from spin and orbital variations and beating between these two.
