Taking advantage of the Gaia DR1, we combined TGAS parallaxes with the Tycho-2 and APASS photometry to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the solar neighbourhood within 250 pc using the colour-magnitude diagram fitting technique. Our dynamically-evolved SFH is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the Hipparcos catalogue within 80 pc of the Sun, showing an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in the past ~4 Gyr. We then correct the SFR for the disc thickening with age to obtain a SFR that is representative of the whole solar cylinder, and show that even with an extreme correction our results are not consistent with an exponentially decreasing SFR as found by recent studies. Finally, we discuss how this technique can be applied out to ~5 kpc thanks to the next Gaia data releases, which will allow us to quantify the SFH of the thin disc, thick disc and halo in situ.

Pulsar glitches are thought to be probes of the superfluid interior of neutron stars. These sudden jumps in frequency observed in many pulsars are generally assumed to be the macroscopic manifestation of superfluid vortex motion on a microscopic scale. Resolving and modelling such phenomena on the scale of a neutron star is, however, a challenging problem which still remains open, fifty years after the discovery of pulsars. In this article I will review recent theoretical progress, both on the microscopic level and on the macroscopic level, and discuss which constraints on the models can be provided by observations.

Equilibrium dynamical models are essential tools for extracting science from surveys of our Galaxy. We show how models can be tested with data from a survey before the survey's selection function has been determined. We illustrate the application of this method by presenting some results for the RAVE survey. We extend our published analytic distribution functions to include chemistry and fit the chosen functional form to a combination of the Geneva–Copenhagen survey (GCS) and a sample of G-dwarfs observed at z ~ 1.75 kpc by the SEGUE survey. By including solid dynamics we are able to predict the contribution that the thick disc/halo stars surveyed by SEGUE should make to the GCS survey. We show that the measured [Fe/H] distribution from the GCS includes many fewer stars at [Fe/H] < −0.6 than are predicted. The problem is more likely to lie in discordant abundance scales than with incorrect dynamics.

Young massive star-forming regions are known to produce hot molecular gas cores (HMCs) with a rich chemistry. While this chemistry is interesting in itself, it also allows to investigate important physical parameters. I will present recent results obtained with high-angular-resolution interferometers disentangling the small-scale structure and complexity of various molecular gas components. Early attempts to develop a chemical evolutionary sequence are discussed. Furthermore, I will outline the difficulty to isolate the right molecular lines capable to unambiguously trace potential massive accretion disks.

We present the results of time-resolved photometry and spectroscopy of the central star of the planetary nebula NGC 6026 and time-resolved photometry of the central star of the planetary nebula NGC 6337. The results of period analysis give an orbital period of 0.528088 days for NGC 6026 and a photometric period of 0.173474 days for NGC 6337. In the case of NGC 6337 it appears that the photometric period accurately reflects the orbital period and that the variability is the result of an irradiated hemisphere on the cool companion. For NGC 6026 however, radial velocities from spectroscopy show that the orbital period is twice the photometric period. In this case, the photometric variability is due to an ellipsoidal effect in which one of the stars fills, or nearly fills, its Roche lobe. Based on the data and modeling using the Wilson-Devinney code, we discuss the physical parameters of the two systems. We also relate the physical parameters to the shape and orientation of the nebulosity.

The Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) will perform high-resolution studies of the Sun's magnetic fields needed to understand their role in the fundamental processes responsible for solar variability. The generation of magnetic fields through dynamo processes, the amplification of fields through the interaction with plasma flows, and the destruction of fields remain poorly understood. There is incomplete insight as to what physical mechanisms are responsible for heating the corona, what causes variations in the radiative output of the Sun, and what mechanisms trigger flares and coronal mass ejections. Progress in answering these critical questions requires study of the interaction of the magnetic field and convection with a resolution sufficient to observe scales fundamental to these processes.

The 4-m aperture ATST is designed as a unique scientific tool, with excellent angular resolution, a large wavelength range, and low scattered light. Some Ap stars with strong magnetic fields pulsate in high-order p modes; they are called roAp (rapidly oscillating Ap) stars. The p-mode frequencies are modified by the magnetic fields. Although the large frequency separation is hardly affected, small separations are modified considerably. The magnetic field also affects the latitudinal amplitude distribution on the surface. We discuss the properties of axisymmetric p-mode oscillations in roAp stars.

Suppression of type I migration is essential for the retention of protoplanetary cores which are sufficiently massive to accrete gas in their nascent disks and evolve into gas giant planets. We explore here the possibility that special disk properties at the snow line may be the dominant process which stalled the type I migration. We simply use a 1-D model to calculate the torque with linear formula and find that, if the surface density jump near snowline is great enough, the migration can be efficiently slowed down or even halted. This mechanism offers an explanation to the observed peak, at 2–3 AU, in the extra solar planets' semi major axis distribution.

HST images have led to the discovery that small (r ~ 1″ r ~ 100 – 200 pc), well-defined, gaseous disks are common in the nuclei of elliptical galaxies. Measurements of rotational velocities in the disks provide a means to measure the central mass and search for massive black holes in the parent galaxies. The minor axes of these disks are closely aligned with the directions of the large–scale radio jets, suggesting that it is angular momentum of the disk rather than that of the black hole that determines the direction of the radio jets. Because the disks are directly observable, we can study the disks themselves, and investigate important questions which cannot be directly addressed with observations of the smaller and unresolved central accretion disks. In this paper we summarize what has been learned to date in this rapidly unfolding new field.

In this work, one intends to computationally simulate and investigate, via thermochemical calculations, how the chemical environment influences some molecular properties, such as IR spectra and absorption cross section, of individual species embedded in the solid phase employing the Polarized Continuum Model (PCM) approach. The trial molecules used here to check these effects are CO, CO2 and H2O. The solid phase (bulk ice) is simulated using different dielectric constant values representing different types of astrophysical ice at PCM approach. The effect of temperature is also investigated since it is known it affects the dielectric constant of the solvent medium.

Hydrodynamical calculations of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) over 25000 yrs of evolution which include timedependent effects of ionization as well as variable central stars winds and parameters consistent with stellar model calculations show a great variety of velocity and density structures which strongly deviate from the often assumed “homogeneous shells, expanding with constant velocities” (Marten & Schönberner, 1991, hereafter MS). By means of a static photoionization code we calculate the surface brightness in the 10 most prominent nebular emission lines for density structures of the model sequence “VS” as given by MS. The obtained radial emissivities are used together with the velocity and temperature structure of the ionized gas to calculate (thermally broadened) line profiles in order to derive “measured” expansion velocities. We compare the theoretical surface brightnesses with observations and demonstrate some difficulties in the interpretation of nebular expansion velocities, expansion distances and ages.

We extend our MCMC sampler of 3D EoR simulations, 21CMMC, to perform parameter estimation directly on light-cones of the cosmic 21cm signal. This brings theoretical analysis one step closer to matching the expected 21-cm signal from next generation interferometers like HERA and the SKA. Using the light-cone version of 21CMMC, we quantify biases in the recovered astrophysical parameters obtained from the 21cm power spectrum when using the co-eval approximation to fit a mock 3D light-cone observation. While ignoring the light-cone effect does not bias the parameters under most assumptions, it can still underestimate their uncertainties. However, significant biases (∼few – 10 σ) are possible if all of the following conditions are met: (i) foreground removal is very efficient, allowing large physical scales (k ∼ 0.1 Mpc−1) to be used in the analysis; (ii) theoretical modelling is accurate to ∼10 per cent in the power spectrum amplitude; and (iii) the 21cm signal evolves rapidly (i.e. the epochs of reionisation and heating overlap significantly

In this paper, we will review recent progress made in the understanding of cosmic silicates and the experimental characterization of relevant analogue materials. We will introduce the main structural properties of silicates. Then we will discuss recent infrared observations with a special emphasis on protoplanetary disks and AGNs. In the experimental section we will describe the optical properties of silicate grains. Here we will concentrate on fundamental optical data and the dependence of the optical behavior on particle shape and temperature.

We continued our search for partial (incomplete) Dyson spheres associated with solar-type stars (spectral types F, G and K) within 25 pc of the Sun. No candidate objects were found in a total of 384 stars.

On 13 December 2012, Chang'e-2 completed a successful flyby of the near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis at a closest distance of 770 meters from the asteroid's surface. The observations show that Toutatis has an irregular surface and its shape resembles a ginger-root of a smaller lobe (head) and a larger lobe (body). Such bilobate shape is indicative of a contact binary origin for Toutatis. In addition, the high-resolution images better than 3 meters provide a number of new discoveries about this asteroid, such as an 800-meter depression at the end of the large lobe, a sharply perpendicular silhouette near the neck region, boulders, indicating that Toutatis is probably a rubble-pile asteroid. Chang'e-2 observations have significantly revealed new insights into the geological features and the formation and evolution of this asteroid. In final, we brief the future Chinese asteroid mission concept.

Detailed spectroscopic work has begun for several stars that have been classified WN 7. All show absorption lines in the upper Balmer series and in ionized helium. The absolute magnitudes, established from cluster membership, are relatively brighter than those of most other WR stars. In this paper the outflow velocity near the stellar photosphere is shown to be similar to that in Of stars. These WN 7 stars show somewhat larger emission line widths and probably have less hydrogen in their envelopes, but otherwise have similar luminosities and temperatures as Of stars.

Pollux is considered as an archetype of a giant star hosting a planet: its radial velocity (RV) presents sinusoidal variations with a period of about 590 d, which have been stable for more than 25 years. Using ESPaDOnS and Narval we have detected a weak (sub-gauss) magnetic field at the surface of Pollux and followed up its variations with Narval during 4.25 years, i.e. more than for two periods of the RV variations. The longitudinal magnetic field is found to vary with a sinusoidal behaviour with a period close to that of the RV variations and with a small shift in phase. We then performed a Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) investigation from the Stokes V and Stokes I least-squares deconvolution (LSD) profiles. A rotational period is determined, which is consistent with the period of variations of the RV. The magnetic topology is found to be mainly poloidal and this component almost purely dipolar. The mean strength of the surface magnetic field is about 0.7 G. As an alternative to the scenario in which Pollux hosts a close-in exoplanet, we suggest that the magnetic dipole of Pollux can be associated with two temperature and macroturbulent velocity spots which could be sufficient to produce the RV variations. We finally investigate the scenarii of the origin of the magnetic field which could explain the observed properties of Pollux.

We present a new nutation series for the Earth (ZMOA-1990) based on (1) the rigid Earth nutation series developed by Zhu and Groten [1989], (2) the normalized response for an elastic, elliptical Earth with fluid-outer and solid-inner cores developed by Mathews et al. [1990], and (3) corrections for the effects of ocean tides and anelasticity, computed to be consistent with the Mathews et al. [1990] normalized response function. In deriving this series, only two parameters of the geophysical model for the Earth have been modified from their values computed with PREM: the dynamic ellipticities of the whole Earth, e, and of the fluid outer core, ef. The adopted values for these parameters, determined from the analysts of very long baseline interferometry (VLSI) data, are e=0.00328915 which is about 1% higher than the value obtained from PREM and 6×10−5 times larger than the IAU adopted value, and ef=0.002665 which is 4.6% higher than the PREM value. The above values were obtained from an adjustment of −0.3 ʺ/cent to the IAU-1976 luni-solar precession constant for e, and from the amplitude of the retrograde annual nutation for ef. The ZMOA-1990 nutation series agrees with estimates of the in-phase and the out-of-phase nutation amplitudes obtained from VLBI data to within 0.5 mas for the terms with 18.6 year period, and to better than 0.1 mas for terms at all other periods except for the out-of-phase terms with annual period (differences 0.39 mas, retrograde, and 0.13 mas, prograde), and for the in-phase term with prograde 13.66 day period (difference −0.25 mas).

We review the dynamics of winds from single Wolf-Rayet stars, with emphasis on the following specific points:

1. (a) The classical “momentum problem” (to explain the large inferred ratio of wind to radiative momentum, η Mv∞/(L/c) ≫ 1) is in principle readily solved through multiple scattering of radiation by an opacity that is sufficiently “gray” in its spectral distribution. In this case, one simply obtains η ≃ τ, where τ is the wind optical depth;

2. (b) Lines with a Poisson spectral distribution yield an “effectively gray” cumulative opacity, with multi-line scattering occuring when the velocity separation between thick lines Δv is less than the wind terminal speed v∞. In this case, one obtains η ≃ v∞/Δv;

3. (c) However, realistic line lists are not gray, and leakage through gaps in the line spectral distribution tends to limit the effective scattering to η ≲ 1;

4. (d) In WR winds, ionization stratification helps spread line-bunches and so fill in gaps, allowing for more effective global trapping of radiation, and thus η > 1;

5. (e) However, photon thermalization can reduce the local effectiveness of line-driving near the stellar core, making it difficult for radiation alone to initiate the wind;

6. (f) The relative complexity of WR wind initiation may be associated with the extensive turbulent structure inferred from observed variabililty in WR wind emission lines;

7. (g) Overall, the understanding of WR winds is perhaps best viewed as an “opacity problem”, i.e., identifying the enhanced opacity that can adequately block the radiation flux throughout the wind, and thus drive a WR mass loss that is much greater than from OB stars of comparable luminosity.
