We report on new results of our multiplicity study and present our follow-up observations of the recently detected faint companion HD 3651 B, the first directly–imaged T dwarf companion of an exoplanet host star.

We report time-resolved V- and R-band CCD photometry of the eclipsing binary RZ Cas obtained with 38-cm Cassegrain telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory during July 2004 – October 2005. The obtained lightcurves clearly demonstrates rapid pulsations with a period of about 22 min. A periodogram analysis of these oscillations is also reported. On 12 January, 2005 (JD 2453383) we observed rapid variability with higher amplitude (∼0m.1), that perhaps may be interpreted as a high-mass-transfer-rate event and inhomogeneity of the accretion stream. Follow-up observations (both photometric and spectroscopic) of RZ Cas are strictly desirable for more detailed study of such events.

γ Per looks like an unexceptional composite–spectrum binary, and has habitually been classified as G8 III+A3 V. Nevertheless, previous studies have produced conflicting results, of component masses that are uncomfortably high, or luminosities that are too large, or (most recently) showing that there is nothing abnormal about the components after all. However, new high-precision CCD spectroscopy and isolation of the secondary spectrum finds that mass of the giant is 3.9 M⊙, which is indeed greater than would be expected from its published spectral type, and that both components have somewhat enhanced luminosities, thus re-opening the question of the origin and evolution of this somewhat unusual system.

Binaries are critical tools that drive stellar systems; which play a major role in galactic dynamics. Internal evolution of globular clusters, e.g., due to evolution of binaries, can be modulated by external effects, like tidal shocks (e.g., Chernoff & Weinberg 1990). There are well-established relations between dynamical properties of globular clusters and their galactrocentric distance, R(g). A characteristic one is: D(1/2) ≈ [R(g)]1/2, where D(1/2) is the diameter containing half the mass / luminosity in projection (van den Bergh et al. 1991). This relation could be a result of tidal evaporation of clusters and feedback of forming protoclusters (Surdin, 1995). A similar limitation of globular cluster distributions is obtained in the half-mass density kinetic temperature plot and used in many cluster formation scenarios (Muray & Lin 1992). This relationship should have an explanation on the basis of dynamic evolution of the cluster population.

Accurate observational data are available for the eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary system RS Cha, composed of two stars in the pre-main sequence stage of evolution: masses, radii, luminosities and effective temperatures of each component and metallicity of the system. This allows to build pre-main sequence stellar models representing the components of RS Cha and to constrain them in terms of physical ingredients, initial chemical composition and age.

We present stellar models we have calculated using the CESAM stellar evolution code for different sets of physical inputs (opacities, nuclear reaction rates, etc.) and different initial parameters (global metallicity, helium abundance, individual abundances of heavy elements). We discuss their ability to reproduce the observational constraints simultaneously for the two components. We focus on the impact on the models of the chemical mixture adopted and we propose a calibration for the RS Cha system providing an estimate of its age and initial helium abundance.

We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the chromospherically active (X-ray strong) eclipsing binary V1061 Cyg (P = 2.35 days) showing that it is in reality a hierarchical triple system. We combine these observations with Hipparcos intermediate data (abscissa residuals) to derive the outer orbit with a period of 15.8 yr. We determine accurate values for the masses, radii, and effective temperatures of the eclipsing binary components, as well as for the mass and temperature of the third star. For the primary we obtain M = 1.282 ± 0.015 M⊙, R = 1.615 ± 0.017 R⊙, Teff = 6180 ± 100 K, for the secondary M = 0.9315 ± 0.0068 M⊙, R = 0.974 ± 0.020 R⊙, Teff = 5300 ± 150 K, and for the tertiary M = 0.925 ± 0.036 M⊙ and Teff = 5670 ± 100 K. Current stellar evolution models agree well with the properties of the primary star, but show a large discrepancy in the radius of the secondary in the sense that the observed value is about 10% larger than predicted (a 5σ effect). We also find the secondary temperature to be ∼200 K cooler than indicated by the models. These discrepancies are quite remarkable considering that the secondary is only 7% less massive than the Sun, which is the calibration point of all stellar models. Similar differences with theory have been seen before for lower mass stars. We identify chromospheric activity as the likely cause of the effect. Inactive stars agree very well with the models, while active ones such as the secondary of V1061 Cyg appear systematically too large and too cool. Both of these differences are understood in terms of the effects of magnetic fields commonly associated with chromospheric activity.

Eta Carinae (ηCar), a Luminous Blue Variable, is a massive binary star system with a 5.54-year spectroscopic period. We present temporal surface plots of selected He I, H I, Fe II and [N II] stellar line profiles measured with HST/STIS sampled from 1998.0 to 2004.3. Our analysis suggests that the profile variations are due to 1) radial velocity variations of the primary star and 2) ionization effects due to the hot companion combined with its wind cavity.

In 1905, Henri Poincaré predicted the existence of gravitational waves and assumed their speed equal to the speed of light. If additionally the gravitational aberration would have the same magnitude as the aberration of light, we would observe several paradoxical phenomena. For instance, the orbit of two bodies would be unstable, since two attractive forces arise that are not in line and hence form a couple. This will be modelled by a nonautonomous system of ordinary differential equations with delay. In fact, any positive value of the gravitational aberration increases the angular momentum of such a system and this may contribute to the expansion of the universe. We found a remarkable coincidence between the Hubble constant and the increasing distance of the Moon from the Earth.

In 2000, Carlip showed that in general relativity gravitational aberration is almost cancelled out by velocity–dependent interactions. We show how the actual value of the gravitational aberration can be obtained by measurement of a single angle at a suitable time t* corresponding to the perihelion of an elliptic orbit. We also derive an a priori error estimate that expresses how accurately t* has to be determined to obtain the gravitational aberration to a prescribed tolerance.

It has been shown quite recently (Morales-Rueda et al. 2003) that dB stars, extreme horizontal branch (EHB) objects in high probability all belong to binary systems. We study in detail the mass and angular momentum loss from the giant progenitors of sdB stars in an attempt to clarify why binarity must be a crucial factor in producing EHB objects. Assuming that the progenitors of EHB objects belong to binaries with initial separations of a roughly a hundred solar radii and fill in their critical Roche lobes while close to the tip of red giant branch, we have found that considerable shrinkage of the orbit can be achieved due to a combined effect of angular momentum loss from the red giant and appreciable accretion on its low mass companion on the hydrodynamical timescale of the donor, resulting in formation of helium WD with masses roughly equal to a half solar mass and thus evading the common envelope stage. A simple approximative analytical formula for mass loss rate from Roche lobe filling giant donor has been proposed depending on mass, luminosity and radius of donor.

Optical photometry and radial velocities have been obtained for stars whose near- and mid-infrared colours suggest that they have dusty circumstellar discs; many are RV Tauri variables. A subset of six stars have earlier spectral types and smaller light amplitudes than classical RV Tauri stars. All are spectroscopic binaries, with surprisingly short periods.

Post-main-sequence (MS) mass loss causes orbital separation amplification in fragile (i.e. common proper motion) binary star systems. Components typically have separations around ∼1000 AU. Such wide pairs experience negligible tidal interactions and mass transfer between companions; thus they evolve as two separate but coeval stars. In this paper we compute the rate of mass loss during the components' lifetimes and attempt to model how it will statistically distort a frequency distribution of fragile binary separations. Understanding this process provides a robust test of current theories of stellar evolution and sets constraints on the dynamics of the Galactic disk.

High-resolution echelle spectroscopic observations taken with the FEROS spectrograph at the ESO 2.2-m telescope confirm the binary nature of the dMe stars EUVE J0825−16.3 and EUVE J1501−43.6, previously reported by Christian & Mathioudakis (2002). In these binary systems, emission of similar intensity from both components is detected in the Na i D1 & D2, He i D3, Ca II H&K, Ca II IRT and Balmer lines. We have determined precise radial velocities by cross-correlation with radial velocity standard stars, which have allowed us to obtain for the first time the orbital solution of these systems. Both binaries consist of two nearly equal M0V components with an orbital period shorter than 3.5 days. We have analyzed the behaviour of the chromospheric activity indicators (variability and possible flares). In addition, we have determined its rotational velocity and kinematics.

In the frame of the collaboration of several Southern European observatories, we are examining a number of eclipsing binary systems in search for evidence of pulsating phenomena. We hope our candidate systems will be suitable for subsequent astroseismological studies. As a first step towards this end, we are analyzing spectroscopic observations of several such binary stars; these observations have been made at the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen, Bulgaria, in the period from 2002 to 2005, and the reduction was done at the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade, Serbia. The measurements of radial velocities and RV curve analysis are in preparation.

Binary stars of the ζ Aurigae type (eclipsing systems containing a cool giant plus a hot main-sequence star) offer a unique and highly effective method of probing a stellar chromosphere. Close to occultation the main-sequence star acts as a light probe behind the giant's chromosphere, enabling an observer to detect changing conditions in that chromosphere along the line of sight. The technique is powerful, the effects dramatic. However, presently known eclipsing systems number only about 10, and a much greater sample is required for meaningful statistics of the properties of stellar chromospheres. New surveys of fainter binaries should be investigated for eclipses in order to gain more information on chromospheres in general. Such information is vital for modelling stellar photospheres, from which abundances are derived. This paper describes the very different behaviour of chromospheric material in three 3rd-magnitude giants.

We present here a detailed study of FF UMa (2RE J0933+624), a recently discovered, X-ray/EUV selected, active binary system with strong Hα emission. By using high-resolution echelle spectroscopic observations taken during five observing runs from 1998 to 2004, we derived precise radial velocities that allowed us to determine the orbital solution of the system at different epochs. Analyzing these orbital solutions, together with a previous one determined in 1993 by other authors, we have found a change in the heliocentric Julian date on conjunction (Tconj) that can be explained by a change with time in the orbital period of the system. The relative amplitude of the orbital period variation derived from these data was dP/P ≈ 5 x 10−4, which is larger than the variations found in other similar chromospherically active binaries like AR Lac and HR 1099. This orbital period variation can be related (Applegate 1992; Lanza 1998, 2006) with the modulation of the gravitational quadrupole-moment of its magnetically active secondary star produced by angular momentum exchanges within its convective envelope. In addition, using these observations, we have determined the stellar parameters of the components and we have carried out a study of the chromospheric activity using all the optical indicators from Ca ii H&K to Ca ii IRT lines.

Two new high-resolution spectroscopic datasets of the active binary V711 Tau are analyzed here. Using the Least-Squares Deconvolution method, we have derived the time series profiles of V711 Tau with high signal-to-noise ratio, which have been used to reconstruct the starspot patterns for its two components by means of the Doppler imaging code DoTS. The results show that the high latitude spots are main features for the primary, the low latitude spots are clear for the secondary in both of two observing runs, and the starspot pattern changes obviously during one month. The lifetime of intermediate-low latitude spots is shorter than the high latitude spots for the primary, the low latitude spots of the secondary seem to have a longer lifetime.

We present and discuss the Hα (λ = 6563Å) observations of the contact (W UMa type) binaries AE Phoenicis and YY Eridani, obtained in 1989, 1990 and 1995 with the CAT/CES telescope of the Southern European Observatory (ESO). In particular, we compare the intrinsic equivalent widths of both components with the NextGen theoretical models and the saturation limit. We find that the average Hα equivalent widths are close to the saturation border and that the primary components have excess Hα-emission, indicating enhanced chromospheric activity. This is compatible with both theoretical and observational suggestions that the primary is the more magnetically active component and is filled with (mostly unresolvable) dark spots and associated chromospheric plages.

In Galactic microquasars with double-peak kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), the ratio of the two frequencies is 3:2. This supports the suggestion that double-peak kHz QPOs are due to a non-linear resonance between two modes of accretion disk oscillations. For the microquasars with known mass, we briefly compare the black hole spin estimates based on the orbital resonance model with the recently reported spin predictions obtained by fitting the spectral continua. Results of these two approaches are not in good agreement. We stress that if the spectral fit estimates are accurate and can be taken as referential (which is still questionable), the disagreement between the predicted and referential values would represent a rather generic problem for any relativistic QPO model, as no spin influence would appear in the observed 1/M scaling of the QPO frequencies. The epicyclic frequencies relevant in these models are often considered to be equal to those of a test particle motion. However modifications of the frequencies due to disc pressure or other non-geodesic effects may play an important role, and the inaccuracy introduced in the spin estimates by the test particle approximation could be crucial.
