We address the effect of orientation of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad line region (BLR) in the context of understanding the distribution of quasars along their Main Sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR, incorporating the ‘un-constant’ virial factor. We show the preliminary results of the analysis to highlight the co-dependence of the Eigenvector 1 parameter, RFeII on the broad HβFWHM (i.e. the line dispersion) and the inclination angle (θ), assuming fixed values for the Eddington ratio (Lbol/ LEdd), black hole mass (MBH), spectral energy distribution (SED) shape, cloud density (nH) and composition.†

The nearby Magellanic Clouds system covers more than 200 square degrees on the sky. Much of it has been mapped across the electromagnetic spectrum at high angular resolution and sensitivity –X-ray (XMM-Newton), UV (UVIT), optical (SMASH), IR (VISTA, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel), radio (ATCA, ASKAP, MeerKAT). This provides us with an excellent dataset to explore the galaxy populations behind the stellar-rich Magellanic Clouds. We seek to identify and characterise AGN via machine learning algorithms on this exquisite data set. Our project focuses not on establishing sequences and distributions of common types of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), but seeks to identify extreme examples, building on the recent accidental discoveries of unique AGN behind the Magellanic Clouds.

We investigate the relationship between environment and star formation main sequence (the relationship between stellar mass and star formation rate) to shed new light on the effects of the environments on star-forming galaxies. We use the large VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz catalogue that consist of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) in three different environments (field, filament, cluster) and for different galaxy types. We examine for the first time a comparative analysis for the distribution of SFGs with respect to the star formation main sequence (MS) consensus region from the literature, taking into account galaxy environment and using radio selected sample at 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 1.2 drawn from one of the deepest COSMOS radio surveys. We find that, as observed previously, SFRs increase with redshift independent on the environments. Furthermore, we observe that SFRs versus M* relation is flat in all cases, irrespective of the redshift and environments.

We use low-frequency GMRT observations and 1.4 GHz VLA archival data to study the radio spectrum of a dying radio galaxy discovered in the field of ELAIS-N1. With a linear size of ˜ 100 kpc at a redshift z ˜ 0.33, the diffuse source J1615+5452 exhibits a steep spectral index and a convex radio spectrum. Its radio morphology also seems to lack compact features such as a nuclear core, relativistic jets and hotspots. We record a spectral curvature Δα ≍ -1 and a synchrotron age estimated between 34 - 70 Myr. These characteristics suggest that J1615+5452 is most likely a remnant radio AGN that has spent more than half of its total lifetime in the quiescence phase. The detection of such an elusive source is important since it represents the final phase in the evolution of a radio galaxy unless the nuclear core gets replenished with fresh particles and undergoes a restarting activity.

Simulations expect an enhanced star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity during galaxy mergers, which can lead to formation of binary/dual AGN. AGN feedback can enhance or suppress star-formation. We have carried out a pilot study of a sample of ˜10 dual nuclei galaxies with AstroSat’s Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). Here, we present the initial results for two sample galaxies (Mrk 739, ESO 509) and deep multi-wavelength data of another galaxy (Mrk 212). UVIT observations have revealed signatures of positive AGN feedback in Mrk 739 and Mrk 212, and negative feedback in ESO 509. Deeper UVIT observations have recently been approved; these will provide better constraints on star-formation as well as AGN feedback in these systems.

A strong quasi-periodic modulation has recently been revealed in the X-ray flux of the X-ray source XMMUJ134736.6+173403. The two observed twin-peak quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) exhibit a 3:1 frequency ratio and strongly support the evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus black hole (AGN BH). It has been suggested that detections of twin-peak QPOs with commensurable frequency ratios and scaling of their periods with BH mass could provide the basis for a method intended to determine the mass of BH sources, such as AGNs. Assuming the orbital origin of QPOs, we calculate the upper and lower limit on the AGN BH mass M, reaching M ≍ 107–109M⊙. Compared to mass estimates of other sources, XMMUJ134736.6+173403 appears to be the most massive source with commensurable QPO frequencies, and its mass represents the current observational upper limit on the AGN BH mass obtained from the QPO observations.

Recent work has shown that it is possible to systematize quasars (QSOs) spectral diversity in 4DE1 parameter space. The spectra contained in most of the surveys have low signal to noise ratio which fed the impression that all QSO’s are spectroscopically similar. Exploration of 4DE1 parameter space gave rise to the concept of two populations of QSOs that present important spectroscopic differences. We aim to quantify broad emission line differences between radio quiet and radio loud sources by exploiting more complete samples of QSO with spectral coverage in Hβ, MgII and CIV emission lines. We used a high redshift sample (0.35 < z < 1) of strong radio emitter QSOs observations from Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

Blazars are radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets oriented towards the observer’s line-of-sight. Based on their optical spectra, blazars may be classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) or BL Lacs. FSRQs are more luminous blazars with both narrow and broad emission and absorption lines, while BL Lacs are less luminous and featureless. Recent studies show that blazars dominate (˜93%) the already-identified EGRET sources (142), suggesting that among the unidentified sources (129) there could still be faint blazars. Due to the presence of a strong non-thermal component inside their jets, blazars are found to display a weaker depression at ˜4000 Å (K 4000 ≤ 0.4). In this study, we aimed at determining the K 4000 break for a selected sample among the potential blazar candidates from unidentified EGRET sources to confirm their blazar nature. We used two blazar candidates, 3EG J1800-0146 and 3EG J1709-0817 associated with radio counterparts, J1802-0207 and J1713-0817, respectively. Their optical counterparts were obtained through spectroscopic observations using Robert Stobie spectrograph (RSS) at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa. The observed Ca II H & K lines depression at ˜4000 Å in spectra of these sources show a shallow depression, K 4000 = 0.35 ± 0.02 and 0.24 ± 0.01, respectively, suggesting that these sources are blazar candidates. Moreover, the redshifts z = 0.165 and 0.26 measured in their spectra confirm the extragalactic nature of these sources.

In this work, we study the properties of galaxies that are showing the inside-out assembly (which we call inside-out assembled galaxies; IOAGs), with the main aim to understand better their properties and morphological transformation. We analysed a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8), with stellar masses in the range log M* = 10.73 – 11.03 M⊙ at at z < 0.1, and analyze their location in the stellar mass-SFR and the color-stellar mass diagram. We found that IOAGs have different spectroscopic properties, most of them being classified either as AGN or composite. We found that the majority of our sources are located below the main sequence of star formation in the SFR-stellar mass diagram, and in the green valley or red sequence in the color-stellar mass diagram. We argue that IOAGs seem to correspond to the transition area where the galaxies are moving from star-forming to quiescent, and from the blue cloud to the red sequence and/or to recently quenched galaxies.

We present the catalogue of Radio sources associated with Optical Galaxies and having Unresolved or Extended morphologies I (ROGUE I). It was generated by cross-matching galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR 7) as well as radio sources from the First Images of Radio Sky at Twenty Centimetre (FIRST) and the National Radio Astronomical Observatory VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalogues. We created the largest handmade catalogue of visually classified radio objects and associated with them optical host galaxies, containing 32,616 galaxies with a FIRST core within 3 arcsec of the optical position. All listed objects possess the good quality SDSS DR 7 spectra with the signal-to-noise ratio > 10 and spectroscopic redshifts up to z = 0.6. The radio morphology classification was performed by a visual examination of the FIRST and the NVSS contour maps overlaid on a DSS image, while an optical morphology classification was based on the 120 arcsec snapshot images from SDSS DR 7.

The majority of radio galaxies in ROGUE I, i.e. ∼ 93%, are unresolved (compact or elongated), while the rest of them exhibit extended morphologies, such as Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type I, II, and hybrid, wide-angle tail, narrow-angle tail, head-tail sources, and sources with intermittent or reoriented jet activity, i.e. double–double, X–shaped, and Z–shaped. Most of FR IIs have low radio luminosities, comparable to the luminosities of FR Is. Moreover, due to visual check of all radio maps and optical images, we were able to discover or reclassify a number of radio objects as giant, double–double, X–shaped, and Z–shaped radio galaxies. The presented sample can serve as a database for training automatic methods of identification and classification of optical and radio galaxies.

At energies approaching the Planck energy scale 1019GeV, several quantum-gravity theories predict that familiar concepts such as Lorentz (LIV) symmetry can be broken. Such extreme energies are currently unreachable by experiments on Earth, but for photons traveling over cosmological distances the accumulated deviations from the Lorentz symmetry may be measurable using the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). To study the spectral hardening feature observed in some VHE gamma-ray blazars, we calculate the reduction of the EBL gamma-gamma opacity due to the existence of underdense regions along the line of sight to VHE -gamma ray sources and we compared with the possibility of a LIV signature. Considering the LIV effect, we found that the cosmic opacity for VHE-gamma rays with energy more than 10 TeV can be strongly reduced. I will further discuss the impact of LIV on the Compton scattering process, and how future CTA observations may open an exciting window on studies of the fundamental physics.

The scaling relations between supermassive black holes and their host galaxy properties are of fundamental importance in the context black hole-host galaxy co-evolution throughout cosmic time. Beyond the local universe, such relations are based on black hole mass estimates in type I AGN. Unfortunately, for this type of objects the host galaxy properties are more difficult to obtain since the AGN dominates the observed flux in most wavelength ranges. In this poster I will present a new correlation we discovered between the narrow L([OIII])/L(Hβ) line ratio and the FWHM(broad Hα). This scaling relation ties the kinematics of the gas clouds in the broad line region to the ionization state of gas in the narrow line region, connecting the properties of gas clouds kiloparsecs away from the black hole to material gravitationally bound to it on sub-parsec scales. This relation can be used to estimate black hole masses from narrow emission lines only, and thus brings the missing piece required to estimate black hole masses in obscured type II AGN. Using this technique, we estimate the black hole mass of about 10,000 type II AGN, and present, for the first time, M(BH)-sigma and M(BH)-M(stars) scaling relations for this population. These relations are remarkably consistent with those observed for type I AGN, suggesting that this new method may perform as reliably as the classical estimate used in non-obscured type I AGN. These findings open a new window for studies of black hole-host galaxy co-evolution throughout cosmic time.

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), accreting supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies, are believed to produce powerful outflows – often observed as radio jets – which significantly influence the evolution of the surrounding galaxy and inter-galactic medium. However, how these jets – which are produced in the central parsecs of the AGN – impact gas on scales thousands to millions times larger is poorly understood. Doing so requires measuring the properties on all the relevant size scales. In this talk I will present initial results from the deepest-ever radio VLBI survey of an extragalactic field, whose milli-arcsecond angular resolution allows us to probe the central parsecs around these AGN. By comparing the radio properties of the detected radio jets with the multi-wavelength properties of their host galaxies, we are better to understand what galaxies generate powerful radio jets, and how do these outflows affect their host galaxies.

Scaling relations are the most powerful astrophysical tools to set constraints to the physical mechanisms of astronomical sources and to infer properties for objects where they cannot be accessed directly. We have re-investigated one of these scaling relations using powerful type 1 Seyferts; the so-called X-ray variability plane (or mass-luminosity-timescale relation, McHardy et al.2006). This relation links the power-spectral density (PSD) break frequency with the SMBH mass and the bolometric luminosity. We used all available XMM-Newton observations to study the PSD and spectra in short segments within each observation. This allows us to report for the first time that the PSD break frequency varies for each object, showing variations in 19 out of the 22 AGN analyzed. Our analysis of the variability plane confirms the relation between the break frequency and the SMBH mass and finds that the obscuration along the line of sight (or the variations on the obscuration using its standard deviation) is also a required parameter. We constrain a new variability plane of the form: log(vBreak) = – A log (MBH) + B log (NH) – C (or log(vBreak) = – A log (MBH) + B Δ (NH) + C). The X-ray variability plane found by McHardy et al. (2006) is roughly recovered when we use unobscured segments. We speculate the PSD shape is related with the outflowing wind close to the accretion disk at least for these powerful type 1 AGN (Gonzalez-Martin et al. 2018).

The variability properties of a quasar sample, spectroscopically complete to magnitude J = 22.0, are investigated on a time baseline of 2 yr, using three different photometric bands (U, J and F). The original sample was obtained using a combination of different selection criteria: colours, slitless spectroscopy and variability, based on a time baseline of 1 yr. The main goals of this work are two-fold: first, to derive the percentage of variable quasars on a relatively short time baseline; secondly, to search for new quasar candidates, missed by the other selection criteria, and thus to estimate the completeness of the spectroscopic sample. In order to achieve these goals, we have extracted all the candidate variable objects from a sample of about 1800 stellar or quasi-stellar objects with limiting magnitude J = 22.50 over an area of about 0.50 deg2. We find that > 65% of all the objects selected as possibly variable are either confirmed quasars or quasar candidates, on the basis of their colours. This percentage increases even further if we exclude from our lists of variable candidates a number of objects equal to that expected on the basis of ‘contamination’ induced by our photometric errors. The percentage of variable quasars in the spectroscopic sample is also high, reaching about 50%. On the basis of these results, we can estimate that the incompleteness of the original spectroscopic sample is < 12%. We conclude that variability analysis of data with small photometric errors can be successfully used as an efficient and independent (or at least auxiliary) selection method in quasar surveys, even when the time baseline is relatively short. Finally, when corrected for the different intrinsic time lags corresponding to a fixed observed time baseline, our data do not show a statistically significant correlation between variability and either absolute luminosity or redshift.

Blazars are powered by super-massive black holes at their centers and are known for extreme variability on timescales from minutes to years. In case of a binary black hole system, this duality is traceable as periodic modulation of their MeV to GeV emission. So far, no high-significance periodicity has been found with standard approaches. We developed a method to search for periodic patterns in Fermi/LAT light curves, using information field theory (IFT). IFT is a formulation of Bayesian statistics in terms of fields. Bayesian statistics is ideal for the problem at hand since the data is incomplete, irregularly sampled and obeys non-Gaussian statistics such that common least-squares methods do not apply. We present a proof of principle of this method, analyzing a sample of promising binary black hole candidates like PG 1553 + 113 and Mrk 501.

Connection between star formation and AGN activity has been studied widely over the past years, which shown to be very important for understanding better the role of AGN in galaxy evolution. In this context, what are the stellar ages and average stellar populations of AGN host galaxies, and if there are any differences depending on AGN type, are still open questions that brought many inconsistencies, very often due to different selection criteria used. The AGN sample detected in the ultra-hard X-rays (14–195 keV) by the Swift BAT telescope is not affected by obscuration nor is it contaminated by stellar emission, and presents some of the most unbiased samples. In this talk we will present the results obtained on AGN stellar populations and ages through spectral fittings by using the Swift-BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) which gives us an unique opportunity to understand better the connection between AGN and their host galaxies.

3C 294 is a powerful FR II type radio galaxy at z = 1.786. Due to its proximity of a bright star, it has been subject to several adaptive optics supported imaging studies. The system shows a clumpy structure indicative of a merging system. There is even tentative evidence that 3C 294 hosts a dual AGN. In order to distinguish between the various scenarios for 3C 294 we performed deep high-resolution adaptive optics imaging and optical spectroscopy of 3C 294 with the Large Binocular Telescope. We resolve the 3C 294 system in three distinct components separated by a few tenths of an arcsecond. One of them is compact, the other two are extended. The nature of the latter is unclear. They could be a single galaxy with an internal dust absorption feature, a galaxy merger, or two galaxies at different redshifts. We can now uniquely associate the radio source of 3c 294 with one of the extended components. Based on our spectroscopy, we determine a slightly different redshift of z = 1.784. We find, however, in addition a single emission line at a wavelength of 6745 AA, which might be identified with Lyα at z = 4.56. It thus appears unlikely that 3C294 hosts a dual AGN; it might rather be a pair of AGNs with very small projected separation.

Bright quasars at low z have generally been found in massive, evolved host galaxies, consistent with formation at early epochs. However, deep, high resolution, multicolor imaging of some quasar hosts have found morphological evidence of tidal tails and colors indicative of active star formation. These results are consistent with theories of galaxy formation and evolution in which merger processes trigger the activation of the quasar phase, and energetic feedback is essential. Understanding the role the black hole population plays in the galaxy formation process is important, but imaging the host galaxies around bright quasars is difficult because of the contribution of the bright nuclei. Very high resolution, deep imaging is necessary to successfully remove the nuclear component. We made high-resolution near-infrared images of several bright z ˜ 0.3 BL Lacs with the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS)/GSAOI in order to study their host galaxies. We will present the results of this imaging with the 1 arcmin AO-corrected field provided by GeMS/GSAOI and compare with available HST imaging available in the archive.

We report results from a multi-frequency investigation of very nearby accreting supermassive black holes. We seek to test the hypothesis that imprints of AGN feedback are present at z ˜ 0. Our sample contains about 130 AGN which were chosen to have redshifts less than 0.02, so our optical imaging typically has several spatial resolution elements across the host galaxy. In addition to optical IFU measurements for all the 130 objects, we have GMRT and archival VLA imaging for subsets of the sample, and also ATCA, ASTROSAT and Chandra observations for select objects. We present our most recent results based on the multi-frequency data, for the systematics of the sample as a whole and on individual objects, that includes a binary black hole precursor.
