Fourier restriction theorems contain estimates of the form

where σ is a measure on a smooth manifold M in ∝n. This paper is a continuation of [5], which considered this problem for certain degenerate curves in ∝n. Here estimates are obtained for all curves with degeneracies of finite order. References to previous work on this problem may be found in [5].

Barbour [l] invented an ingenious method of establishing the asymptotic distribution of the number X of specified subgraphs of a random graph. The novelty of his method relies on using the first two moments of X only, despite the traditional method of moments that involves all moments of X (compare [8, 10, 11, 14]). He also adjusted that new method for counting isolated trees of a given size in a random graph. (For further applications of Barbour's method see [4] and [10].) The main goal of this paper is to show how this method can be extended to a general setting that enables us to derive asymptotic distributions of subsets of vertices of a random graph with various properties.

The notion of a left (right, double) multiplier may be regarded as a generalization of the concept of a multiplier to a non-commutative Banach algebra. Each of these is a special case of a more general object, namely that of a quasi-multiplier. The idea of a quasi-multiplier was first introduced by Akemann and Pedersen in ([1], §4), where they consider the quasi-multipliers of a C*-algebra. One of the defects of quasi-multipliers is that, at least a priori, there does not appear to be a way of multiplying them together. The general theory of quasi-multipliers of a Banach algebra A with an approximate identity was developed by McKennon in [5], and in particular he showed that the quasi-multipliers of a considerable class of Banach algebras could be multiplied. McKennon also introduced a locally convex topology γ on the space QM(A) of quasi-multipliers of A and derived some of the elementary properties of (QM(A), γ).

Coupled stationary bifurcations in nonlinear operator equations for functions, which are defined on a real interval with non-flux boundary conditions at the ends, are analysed in the framework of imperfect bifurcation theory. The bifurcation equations resulting from a Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction possess a natural structure which can be obtained by taking real parts of a diagonal action in ℂ2 of the symmetry group 0(2). A complete unfolding theory is developed and bifurcation equations are classified up to codimension two. Structurally stable bifurcation diagrams are given and their dependence on the wave numbers of the unstable modes is clarified.

Let X1, X2, …, be a sequence of independent random variables with common distribution function F in the domain of attraction of a stable law and, for each n ≥ 1, let X1, n ≤ … ≤ Xn, n denote the order statistics based on the first n of these random variables. It is shown that sums of the middle portion of the order statistics of the form , where (kn)n ≥ 1 is a sequence of non-negative integers such that kn → ∞ and kn/n → 0 as n → ∞ at an appropriate rate, can be normalized and centred so that the law of the iterated logarithm holds. The method of proof is based on the almost sure properties of weighted uniform empirical processes.

In ‘Generalized Translation Operators…’ [3] algebras associated with a self-adjoint operator were investigated. Examples were given in the cases, inter alia, of the operators Mt and i d/dt in the space L2(ℝ, m) (m = Lebesgue measure). This paper shows that by suitably rigging the space the examples can be seen as natural generalizations of certain familiar algebras. The rigging enables us to introduce, rigorously, into L2(ℝ,m) the improper elements used by Akhiezer and Glazman [1] as cyclic vectors for Mt and i d/dt in order to identify the Fourier–Plancherel transform with a spectral representation of the space.

Kendall and Le [4] gave an exact algorithm for the computation of a polygonally generated (auxiliary) shape-density m̃(x, y) which we used to obtain ‘exact’ numerical densities for given (x, y). Here I derive an explicit formula for m̃(x, y), for an arbitrary convex plane polygon K, valid when the shape-point (x, y) lies in what will be called the ‘(upper) basic tile’ of the associated singular tessellation. In most circumstances this is all that is needed for the statistical analysis of collinearities.

In a previous paper [1] we gave examples of positive integral operators on L2( − 1, 1) and estimates of their eigenvalues. In theorem 1 we treated operators with kernels of the form Σan sn tn, where (an) is a sequence of non-negative real numbers satisfying an ≃ α2n and 0 < α < 1 (here and throughout the notation an ≃ bn shall mean that an = O(bn) and bn = O(an)). In this paper we prove the more comprehensive Theorem 1 a below; theorem 1 of [1] is just the case b = 0. The term q(2α/(1 + α2)) will be explained immediately after the statement of the result.

In this article we investigate the meromorphic differential equation X′(z) = A(z) X(z), often abbreviated by [A], where A(z) is a matrix (all matrices we consider have dimensions 2 × 2) meromorphic at infinity, i.e. holomorphic in a punctured neighbourhood of infinity with at most a pole there. Moreover, X(z) denotes a fundamental solution matrix. Given a matrix T(z) which together with its inverse is meromorphic at infinity (a meromorphic transformation), then the function Y(z) = T−1(z) X(z) solves the differential equation [B] with B = T−1AT − T−1T [1,5]. This introduces an equivalence relation among meromorphic differential equations and leads to the question of finding a simple representative for each equivalence class, which, for example, is of importance for further function-theoretic examinations of the solutions. The first major achievement in this direction is marked by Birkhoff's reduction which shows that it is always possible to obtain an equivalent equation [B] where B(z) is holomorphic in ℂ ¬ {0} (throughout this article A ¬ B denotes the difference of these sets) with at most a singularity of the first kind at 0 [1, 2, 5, 6]. We call this the standard form. The question of how many further simplifications can be made will be answered in the framework of our reduction theory. For this purpose we introduce the notion of a normalized standard equation [A] (NSE) which is defined by the following conditions:

Much recent attention has been devoted to those nonlinear partial differential equations admitting higher-order conservation laws (e.g. [2] and references therein) or equivalently admitting higher-order symmetries. In particular the sine-Gordon equation possesses such symmetries [5, 7] where is the two-dimensional d'Alembertian operator. The question posed and solved here is whether such behaviour is possible in higher dimensions. We therefore consider the ‘Generalized Klein–Gordon’ (GKG) equation

in N dimensions where and N ≥ 3.

The stability of a rotating compressed rod is studied as a two-parameter bifurcation problem. Imperfections in shape and loading are assumed to be present. A number of solutions and their local behaviour is analysed.

The integral

involves a large real parameter N and a small real parameter ∈. Its asymptotic behaviour is non-uniform when N → ∞ and ∈ → 0. Thus, when ∈ > 0 is kept fixed and N → ∞, the integral decays exponentially at a rate depending on ∈; when ∈ → 0 the integral tends to

which decays algebraically when N → ∞. It is shown that several distinct uniformly asymptotic expansions can be obtained which each involve an infinite set of functions of the combination Certain related integrals are also treated.

Given any subset ℬ, containing the identity (1), of ℬ (ℋ) (the bounded operators on some Hilbert space ℋ), and given two states σ and ρ on ℬ(ℋ), a definition was given in [3] of entℬ (σℬ|ρ|ℬ) - ‘the entropy of σ relative to ρ given the information in ℬ’. It was shown that, for ℬ an injective von Neumann algebra, the resulting relative entropy agreed with those of Umegaki, Araki, Pusz and Woronowicz, and Uhlmann. The purpose of this paper is to explore this definition further. After some technical preliminaries in Section 2, in Section 3 a new characterization of entℬ(ℋ) (σ|ρ) for σ and ρ normal states will be given. In Section 4 it will be shown that under fairly general circumstances the relative entropy on algebras can be used for statistical inference. This is important for applications of the relative entropy. I shall given the briefest sketches of how I see these applications being made in the measurement problem in quantum theory and in a ‘many worlds’ interpretation. The vigilant reader will notice that the scheme proposed in Section 4 for modelling measurements subject to given compatibility requirements differs slightly from that proposed in the introduction to [3]. The reason for this is outlined in Section 5, where an explicit computation is made of the relative entropy for the simplest non-trivial case in which ℬ is not an algebra; when ℬ = {1, P, Q} for P and Q projections subject to certain conditions.

The Born partial wave integrals of Seaton [3] are considered. It is shown that the treatment of Whelan [5] may be further simplified and that these integrals may be expressed as a finite sum of associated Legendre polynomials of the second kind. This provides a convenient method for their numerical evaluation and allows the relationship between the Born and Bethe reactance matrices to be given in explicit analytic form.
